Guest Reviews
- Sara (10/5): An absolute must stay & will return in the future if possible! perfect ryokan for visiting the area - Our stay at Uotoshi Ryokan was exceptional - very convenient location for visiting Jigokudani Monkey Park and exploring Yudanaka. Could not say better things about our host! As many other reviewers have mentioned, he offered to drive us to the entrance to the snow monkey park rather than using the bus system, telling us tidbits about the town - history and sights to see along the short route & even allowed us to leave our luggage to pick up, even though we had checked out. He was extremely kind and informative!
Experiencing a stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan was a highlight of our trip! Both meals - dinner and breakfast - featured delicious food. The women’s onsen was small and perfect for our needs, the inn has a small number of guests and we happened to have use of the facility privately; it was stated to be tattoo-friendly.
Uotoshi Ryokan has so much character, from the moment you walk up to the door and see your name on a sign welcoming you! Overall the accommodation is cleanly, there is a bit of dust but recognize how long established it is and the small staff that runs it does a fantastic job. Everything that is needed to be used is tidy & nothing is “dirty” per se!
Everybody has different good palettes - personally, I loved the meals, another member of my party and other guests at dinner time seemed to not be expecting the seafood provided.
- DAVID (4/5): Don't stay here i Don't know why the reviews are good - The location This is the dirtiest place we have ever stayed in ,there comes a time in life when you have to admit that you cannot do what you would like to do this place is unsafe ,unhygienic and so dirty. Take no notice of the previous reviews I was so looking forward to staying here but how wrong I was the onson is terrible and the dining room is filthy.

- Federica (10/5): Magico! - Ryokan tradizionale molto bellino, posizione molto comoda e soprattutto host gentilissimo e super disponibile!
Quan vam tornar a anar (a l'hora del check-in), ni hi havia ningú a recepció.

"Old but gold" ist hier das Motto.

- Brent (10/5): An authentic Japanese experience - The authentic homestay-style experience, the delicious meals which consisted of a spread of amazing Japanese dishes (we had dinner and breakfast). The onset was amazing, rustic but invigorating and topped off our day. We were able to leave our luggage at the accommodation while we went to the snow monkey park on the final day. The host was fantastic, a true gentleman, who made us feel right at home. The only negative I can think of is there is no lift to the second floor for those with disabilities or the elderly who might not be able to carry their luggage up the stairs. The host is a master archer and holds archery lessons twice a week which my wife and I would loved to have done but unfortunately we weren’t there on those dates so if you want to do archery contact him prior to booking your dates to confirm if archery is an option.

- Merrion (7/5): Ryokan with character, not luxury. - Location was good for Monkey Park. We arrived bit late in day and missed the bus so the lovely owner drove us up to the park and gave us advice/map about walking back. Unfortunately the ladies onsen was shallow and water pressure in shower very poor but quite warm. Bit old like rest of building which you might say was quaint.
The owner apologised but I didn’t mind - at least I had it to myself!
- Ellette (8/5): -
- Sarah (6/5): Older Traditional Style Ryokan across the bridge - Lovely traditional style tatami Japanese rooms with additional seating area and as it was winter we even got a Kotatsu on our coffee table which was lovely! It is across the bridge, not too far walk from Yudanaka station. It is near Yudanaka beer brewery and a couple of restaurants. Check out what's around on google maps. Our names were on the outside of the hotel to welcome us which was cool. I think its an old style Ryokan thing. The male owner greeted us and showed us to our room and explained everything. We got new Yukata and towels every 2 days I think it was. There was enough tea for our whole stay on the coffee table and we were greeted with local sweets to have with tea. The owner puts a new container of hot water outside your door every morning. The ryokan has lots of traditional decorations including dolls, swords, bow and arrow, samurai armour to look at. It has traditional wood onsen which was not busy and we got to ourselves most nights. There was confusion at checkin about tax. It seemed the owner was saying we had to pay more tax but it had to be in cash. We were confused so got out cash and then he said no it was already included in our booking that we had already paid for so we didn't pay any extra in the end. The heater in our room randomly would turn off so we would wake up cold occasionally. There aren't fridges in your room just a communal one near the stairs. There's no accessible microwave so if you haven't booked breakfast or dinner there you have to ask the owner to use the microwave and he goes not so willingly and heats it up for you in the kitchen, you cant use it yourself. The wifi was terrible and kept kicking us off. There was not much pump soap around to wash your hands. I kept having to go back to the womens bathroom to wash my hands. Due to all the decorations the place is a bit dusty. I mean it would be impossible to dust efficiently with all of them there but there were other signs of the place needed a bit of a spruce up cleanliness wise as well in sink areas, bathrooms, onsen etc. There was barely any water pressure in the womens onsen on any of the taps. In fact 1 out of the 4 taps didnt work. I washed myself with a tiny drizzle every night. There was also only body wash and shampoo in the onsen no conditioner (that was both mens and womens onsens). The men’s onsen was so much better and bigger then the women’s onsen. They should switch it every day so women and men can experience both. There was very little to no heating in the mens onsen area and my husband said it was absolutely freezing on 2 of the 3 nights we were there. He also commented of bad water pressure though it seemed better than the womens onsen. Almost went to Yudanaka station to use the public onsen it was that bad. We were excited to read reviews that we could try samurai armour and shoot bow and arrow there but i don't think they do it anymore.
- Cam (8/5): - Friendly' owner

Clean, tidy, and warm, with little extra touches (red bean cakes and tea on arrival, lots of local information, a traditional onsen bathroom).
Semplice e perfetta.

- Stephanie (7/5): - The property was well organised and clean. It allowed us to experience the traditional ryokan experience, which we enjoyed. The host was accomodating to changes in time when we needed them. The breakfasts were amazing, so many delicious little dishes each morning, the dinner was also great too. Our room was a little cold, but under the duvets it was fine.
- Filanti (7/5): -
- Rodolfo (10/5): We loved the Ryokan, it was our only traditional stay while in Japan. - We loved the breakfast, very different from what we usually have at home.
- DANIELA ELIZABETH (9/5): -
- Zaiga (10/5): Japanese hospitality at it's best - At this Ryokan guests can experience Japanese hospitality at it's best. The host was very warm and friendly person who went above and beyond to make the stay comfortable and memorable. The dinner and breakfast was amazing, the onsen bath was really cosy. All amenities are outside the room, but the atmosphere is 100% worth it. It's perfect as it is.
- Luna (10/5): This was a nice, traditional ryokan! We enjoyed our stay, and the owner was incredibly kind. -
- Piret (9/5): - Väga ehe majutuskoht. Mõnus onsen. Bussipeatus lähedal, samuti raudteejaam. Ümber nurga suurepärane väike söögikoht.
Magamine mattidel jahedas toas paksu teki all on eraldi kogemus.
- Joel (10/5): - The man running the Ryokan is incredibly kind, caring, welcoming, and friendly. I genuinely felt like I was at home. The Ryokan has a lovely homey atmosphere, and the bathhouse was really nice! The breakfast was delicious! He also offered to drive us to the snow monkeys, which was very kind of him and greatly appreciated. I loved my stay and would 100% stay here again!!
- Tétreault (7/5): - Très chaleureux, personnel gentil et courtois. Très bon petit déjeuner !
- ferran (8/5): - The man running the place is a jewel, but the place itself is a little... Underwelming, nevertheless everything was good.
- Bruno (10/5): Nice staying with friendly host - Pretty comfortable traditional japanese house Everything was fine
- Luca Marciano (10/5): - The place is super authentic - it feels like stepping someone's home rather than a touristic establishment. If you are looking for such a feeling, then this one is the right place. It is technically a bit messy and full of staff, in general it looks a bit dated, but it all adds to the charm and - since everything works perfectly anyway - it is all positive to me
The owner is such a great guy - he was very nice to us, even offering us a ride to the Snow Monkey Park, and in general explaining us a lot about the food or some cultural aspects. He speaks great English by the way
The location is good, an easy walk to the train station and the public onsen, as well as a 15-minute walk to Shibu Onsen
The food was so delicious - generous portions, good quality, great focus on fish For us, nothing. The only negative one could be that this place, not being located in Shibu Onsen, does not grant you access to the 9 onsen in that village. Just be aware of it so that you will not be disappointed.
- Janice (8/5): Fantastic food. Authentic rooms.
Authentic - The food was the best we have had in 17 days. The actual place was slightly old fashioned but we really don't mind that as it was completely authentic.
- gaya (10/5): - A traditional and authentic place, conveniently located near the station, easy to get to the Monkey Park.
The owners are wonderful, extremely helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area, with good English.
The stay itself was very comfortable — highly recommended!
- Kai (7/5): Very good for people who are seeking a friendly atmosphere with great food and don’t mind the simple rustic building. - The owner is super friendly and the dinners and breakfasts were very beautifully prepared and really tasty. The house is pretty old but everything functioned.
- Dan Nitrox (8/5): Nice traditional ryokan located close to snow monkey park - This is a family-run traditional old Japanese ryokan (guest house). The room was clean, the tatami beds were very comfartable to sleep on. The onsen was
clean but the baths need some renovation. The location is very convenient to visit snow monkey park,
which is accessable by both bus or walk. The helpful owner speaks good English. The traditional Japanese breakfast was very tasty. The common spaces are a bit clattered. The wooden planks in onsen baths were slippery and a bit moldy.
- Loïc (10/5): -
- Rossana (10/5): - A historic and traditional building, an indoor onsen accessible 24 hours a day, and a lovely, kind and interesting host: definitely book here if you are visiting this area of Japan! absolutely nothing: this place is a gem!

- Nicola (7/5): Old fashioned ryokan that should need some more care - Kindness and helpfulness of the owner that kindly bring us with his car to monkey park, gifted us some sweets and apple from local growers.
Position is good, near the station.
The atmosphere of the location that is similar to the one of the whole city, where it seems to travel back in the ‘80s The main problem with this location is the cleaning and generally the messiness.
We found a couple of dead cockroaches on the stairs and in the bathroom. Also the onsen is not well cared, the carpets looked very old and not so clean, the bathtub also need some cleaning.
Common space also looked messy and with dust everywhere.
It’s a pity because with just some more care it could be a very good experience of rural japan
- Sam (10/5): This traditional hotel was a glimpse into rural Japan that was absolutely wonderful. The one site onsen was great for a - If you are looking for traditional Japanese accommodation in an incredible location this is the one. The owner is so kind and helpful and did everything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The local wildlife were present in our stay with some mosquitos in the room but that was our fault leaving the screen window open and leaving lights on in the evening.
- Yoshihara (8/5): -
- Hagen (10/5): -
- Hiroki (8/5): -
- Alfred (10/5): Authentic - Very authentic and very nice man who collected us from the station, showed us to our room and prepared an excellent traditional meal for us as well as breakfast and then drove us to the snow money park in the money
- Adela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erla (6/5): Pleasant - The breakfast was great and very tradishional, I reccomend it. I was expecting a homestay-vibe, warmth and hopefully interactions with the owner to learn about the area. However the owner was quite rude, was not interested in talking to us and honestly we felt awkward and like were not very welcome. It was not really a language barrier problem because the owner speaks good english (which is of course a plus!). I am very open and easy going, and am almost never dissatified with new places, so I was suprised how I felt after this stay.
The building was however cosy and it was a unique experience, but I can't say the owner was as hospitable as other reviewers have said. I still recommend going however.
- Haley (9/5): Very traditional ryokan (be prepared!) - The host was very nice and wanted to make sure everything was good. Let them know if you have dietary restrictions and are eating dinner with them, they tried to be flexible. Use the onsen! The rats in the walls did wake me up a couple times.
- Aureliane (8/5): Wonderful experience at a ryokan - Super cozy, traditional Japanese ryokan. Lovely host, extremely friendly and helpful with suggestions and spoke very good English. Spacious room. Mats on the floor to sleep actually quite comfortable. My partner has the dinner one night which was delicious (no catering for vegetarians / vegans sadly so I could not have). Hot water provided every day with coffee, tea. Communal fridge available. Lovely onsen (though female one a bit small). The only showers were in the onsen which was on a different floor to the bedrooms.
- Lucas (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is a super lovely old Japanese man he speaks very good English he loves to tell you about his hotel and his archery. The onsen is very lovely we were here end of April and there was nobody else staying there we had the onsen to ourselves had we have known it was such a lovely place we would have stayed more than one night. Awesome place to stay if you're going to see the snow monkeys. Cannot give this more than a 10 but I would. There is nothing about this place that I did not like.
- Nadeem (4/5): Disappointing - Overall the price of the ryokan is quite good, it's worth it to experience one in a cheap way. We had a Japanese breakfast included as well which was very nice and quite tasty. The staff was helpful, and we were given a ride to the snow monkey park by the owner, and he informed us about the local areas nearby and where we can go. There is a private hot spring in the building and you can go anytime you want. Often it's empty, meaning it's a hot spring all to yourself. It was nice to bathe in the hot spring various times in the day and we quite enjoyed that aspect. The town itself is pretty, with various nice spots such as the Thai place nearby , which was cozy and a nice place to go when you want something other then Japanese food. The staff is a sister and brother, the sister was kind and helpful to us and the brother often told us about the various spots. The building is old which could be seen as good to experience a traditional house but it was not in a well shape. The front of the house is quite messy, with papers and other things all over. One big issue was how we were unable to go to other hot springs in the town. We were told we could visit shibu onsen as well as others. We were told however there is no public baths and this one does not count as a part of the shibu onsen, which isn't clear online but you are unable to go to unless you stay in one of the inns there. The hot spring in the inn itself was quite dirty with debris in the bath. Moreover, there were roaches and other bugs in the bath area. We also had issues with the passive aggressiveness of the owner at points. We had asked for a can opener at some point and he said not to expect getting one; when we said okay we won't need one then he then said no you can take it but not expect to always be able to use one... It says laundry is on the site but you need your own detergent, moreover there is no dryer and the coin landary is quite far. It was incredibly disappointing overall, and we felt a tension there making us want to go early, since we couldn't really go to the onsens we wanted to either.
