Staff recommendations ended up as wild goose chases three times only to find the staff was simply wrong. Would I go back? Probably if there was no private event scheduled. As I said, tough to review, but now my expectations are realistic. All said, St Croix was wonderful.

- Maribel (10/5): - We had a great stay at The Fred! The room was on the smaller side, but perfectly comfortable for a couple. The hotel has a fun, vibrant vibe with great amenities. The pool area was really nice, and the view from the terrace was beautiful—especially around sunset. The bar is spacious and conveniently located right by the pool, which made it easy to relax with a drink in hand. One of the highlights of our stay was the excellent service from Kathiria—she was friendly, helpful, and truly made us feel welcome. The location is a big plus—it’s within walking distance to several restaurants and we were able to enjoy the 4th of July celebrations without needing a car. A solid choice for a fun, social getaway in St. Croix!
- Joseph (2/5): - Avoid this hotel (and the town is not much better). My "pool view" room with a "balcony" was on the first floor with a view of the back of the office where I got to enjoy the staff's little dog barking for hours (till 10pm) and was woken up early in the morning with the loud radios, conversations and engine noise of delivery drivers on the street side of my room. Since the cruise ship was in port, the public areas had booming music in a failed attempt to attract cruise ship business - and a successful attempt to push me and other guests away. The staff was uncaring, but I write that off to them being more focused on the lack of phone service to the hotel as their phone rep was informing them that it might be weeks before the phone was reconnected. I travel extensively and, for the first time in my life, I got to experience a hotel that was bad enough that I canceled the remainder of my stay and booked a flight and hotel at another island. Yeah, it was worth $1,000 to get away from Fred... Highly disappointed. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Avoid The Fred and St Croix. There are far better options for your vacation money.

- Casey (10/5): - First time visiting St.Croix and we wanted something a little different. The Fred was perfect for our long weekend girls trip. Everyone was exceptionally nice and very helpful. The small size of the property made it feel very private during the early part of the day. In fact if you are an early morning by the pool kind of a person this is a spot for you. The pool and whirlpool were clean and the perfect temperature. As there is a bar/resturant on site, it did seem to get a little rowdy on Friday night (great people watching). However, they have "quite" time starting at 10 and things did get quite around that time. We stayed in "the James." It had its own little balcony and a fantastic ocean view. My one and only irritation was the balcony was right next to a parking area and during various times of the day people played extremely loud music from their cars. It did add the the overall "vibe" of the trip... I personally just like taking naps in the afternoon. So if you want a little more quiet, I would opt for a different room. Overall would Love to come back and stay here again!!

Their restaurant is okay, plus there are a couple of better options next door. The hot tub wasn't hot most of the time. Nice views of sunset - unbeatable.

Upon arrive to the Fred in March 2025 we were told that the pool wasn’t functioning (it was disgusting green/brown water color), the kitchen wasn’t functional and they had an extremely limited menu, the room keys were non existent for the first half of the trip, the overall cleanliness of the property left a lot to be desired. All of issues with the pool, kitchen and keys were happening days before our trip and we got no heads up from management. We obviously would have stayed somewhere else if we had known the property was in this shape.
- melissa (6/5): - The overall property was nice since it was oceanfront but the pool was drained, the kitchen was under construction so it was a limited menu, and the key access was down so we had to have someone let us in our room for over half our stay. The best thing was the ocean and our bartenders Wendy, Heather and Chelsie.
- Donna (4/5): - Horrible experience at the Fred. Upon arrival, was not given the room booked for 8 moths wit sea view a dbalcony,no explanation. Also lear ned that pool and jacuzzi were not working. Terribly disappointing. Service at bar was terrible, on first day it took 1.5 hours to get to drink. Unsettling experience with safety issues and lack of response from staff and security. Unacceptable. Food was very limited and not at all what was described and shown on website. Very deceptive. Beach was small, full of trash and very rocky. Would never return.

I took multiple pictures including dangerous extension cords, rusted abandoned furniture and discarded wood pieces on a back patio, algae in the pool, etc. I want my refunded proceeded. It’s been over a week.

Room really wasn’t prepared very well for guest. Air conditioning was poor. Finally fixed day before leaving. But the bar tenders and cleaning staff made the stay worthwhile. No so much for management.

The restaurant was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was great. Would definitely recommend to others.

Grounds were well maintained. Rooms were clean and maintained daily. Front desk attendant, Delia, was very accommodating with requests. Dining is in the courtyard. Limited meal choices. Meals were a bit pricy.
- Henry (4/5): Don't stay at the Fred - The Fred is not Adults only, they allow day guest of any age. Our shower drain was stopped up. We used towels to stop the water from flooding the room. Even after 3 requests we did not get fresh towels. This is a beach front hotel. There is nowhere on site to wash the sand off before entering your room. Because of this there was sand on the floor in the room. On a four night stay, the room was cleaned only once. No place to shower before getting in the Pool or Hot Tub, they were both full of sand. They were repairing the deck outside our room. Work started before 7 am 3 of the 4 nights we were there. Service is the worst we have ever experienced at a hotel. At times, the music played at the bar was too loud to even have a conversation or hear the ocean. The gift shop had boxes stacked up in the room where you are supposed to be able to get coffee and water bottles making it hard to navigate. They ran out of coffee pods and water bottles two days into our stay. Prices for food at the hotel restaurant were much higher than other restaurants close by and not as good.

Took us a while to understand the slow paced culture of St Croix … a nice change from the fast paced craziness of our home in Washington DC. While there were a few hiccups during our stay - such as no towels; being ignored by staff at bar; etc - the Fred after we complained made things right. Thanks, Fred, for an incredible stay on St Croix. We will stay there again.

- Heath David (4/5): - It seemed at one point in the resorts history it was a very nice chic place to stay, and in many ways it does still have that charm. The problem that i could tell was that the majority of the staff seem more interested in talking to each other than acknowledging the customers and servicing them in a timely manner, (this was not “island time” it went beyond that). Also i found that i heard at least one person say that is not my job and refused to do the most menial task to correct the situation that needed addressing. The facilities needed to be better up-kept, curtains around the bar were starting to mold and tear and the pool grew a greener bottom everyday never once did i see it cleaned. The staff seemed to like to blast very loud music in the middle of the day and the only people seeming to enjoy it was the group of them sitting in the bar area.( it could have been turned down a bit for more enjoyment by all. I am not saying the place is horrible but it is not living up to its potential for sure. The chef made us a delicious dinner, the rooms are interesting and individual in decor, the staff are nice (just not managed well?), the hot tub is top notch (the hottest hot tub ever)! A major plus is that it is located directly on the beach! Would stay there again ? Truthfully if they dropped the price by a hundred dollars a night maybe, but for $300 a night I could find a more accommodating location to stay.

Most of them had bad attitudes As if they didn't want to be there. One Morning , I waited over an hour for breakfast that I never got. It was a simple pancakes and sausage breakfast. While I was waiting two gentlemen Walked up to get some drinks.Waited more than 5 minutes.Nobody was around and they took off. And said they were glad they decided not to stay there at the fred. The TV's at the bar were not working. The t v's in the room were not working. Rome service was good. The rooms were nice. The room had a moisture problem. With a dehumidifier that stopped working. The hot tub was. Nice.
- Heather (8/5): - A bit of an older crowd than I anticipated based on the advertising. The staff was beyond amazing and friendly--they truly made our stay. The views are phenomenal. The hotel is a quick walk to the pier/restaurants/shops. A few cons--not a quiet area. Lots of barking dogs, chickens/roosters, etc. The area seems a bit sketch after dark but we were never confronted or asked for money. The hotel is adult-only, but it is open to the public so there can/will be kids, especially on cruise ship days. The restaurant/bar does run on island time, which is typical in the Caribbean, but there were several people that got frustrated/annoyed. Our tv didnt work the whole week--the staff (multiple) attempted to fix it but it was an issue with the dish/internet. They did try, though. Overall, an enjoyable stay; relaxing with beautiful views and awesome staff that will make your stay.
- Bethany (6/5): - We paid Grand Hyatt prices for Hotel 8 service. There was a Kerig in the room but no coffee, tea or even cups. The batteries for the ac remote and the room safe were dead. We didn't have satellite service after the first day... The room seemed 1/2 finished: no place to shelve clothes, only a closet, so we lived out of our suitcase. There were a couple of wonderful staff, but most were inattentive. At $311-$368/night one expects better. A LOT better.
- Paul (4/5): Skip this one, unless you want to waste money. - Rough checking in. Apparently no staff showed up to work in the hotel except for two people. We had a store our luggage in a liquor storage closet. When we did get into our room, we had no towels, discovered after taking a shower. We stayed two nights, with no housekeeping during our stay. We had two coffee pods for the first morning and a Keurig coffee maker that barely worked. Lamps on both side of the beds didn’t work. TV didn’t work. Room service was offered, but not available due to staff shortage. Such a shame, because the hotel was beautiful. Staff had a bad attitude, not friendly. Tolerated us at best. Obviously will not be returning to a Fred hotel

- Sharon (4/5): - This property has potential but they are letting it go. Lots of small issues like lack of cleaning, non-functioning ice machines, bathroom door (in our unit) wouldn't close, lack of chairs in the unit, & outdoor furniture in disrepair. Then the hot water was out for the 3 days we were there, and a neighbor said it had been out for several days prior. No communication from the office unless we stopped in. They said it was getting fixed, but it never did. What really put the place in the negative was the staff. While several were really pleasant, there were at least 5 who were more rude than at any public establishment we've ever been in. From the way they spoke to us, to completely ignoring us, (and others around us). They would walk right past us to serve or just chat with what appeared to be local friends. While I'm not judging the activity, we watched one young woman spend about a third of her working time smoking weed & hanging out with locals just over the property line next door. Smoke all you want but maybe drop off a beer on your way past the table.

Staff sat around eating and drinking amongst themselves. Trash was laying around each morning....they don't bother picking it up at night. Room was just OK. Safe did not work, remotes did not work.

It was really nice staying somewhere that was adults only. The food was yummy and amenities were very nice. The only issue we had was upon arrival being placed in a room decorated in The Grateful Dead theme. We were not comfortable with it and felt like the guests should have the option to choose that room or not from the beginning. We let the staff know and they were gracious to switch out our room. Other than that it was lovely, and we would definitely stay there again.

My only negative comment is the cleanliness. Although the room was clean, some aspects were missed. The beach and bathrooms by the pool were not completely cleaned each night. That being said, I would still recommend staying at The Fred!!

- Berthold (8/5): - Maintaining property seems to not be a focus. Electrical Switch plate in bathroom missing, shower lever is stripped. Under the bed was a layer of dust. Housekeeping was sporadic. Deck tables were not wiped down daily, garbage not emptied. Make up removal dark towels no longer offered. Beach towels are cheap and not absorbent. Shower gel bottles did not pump. The Fred’s location is a 5 , it is beautiful. The help is a 4 but there is not enough help anymore. You get the impression that instead of replacing deck chair pillows- they remove the pillows. Pool floats were in need of replacing and that was done the day we left. Overall- the condition of The Fred is slipping and that is frustrating because it is a favorite yearly destination. New music was introduced- live Jazz band and that was wonderful. No idle and dancing weekly. Fred has begun to cut to much IMO. And that is a disappointment. The food continues to be good yet the silverware is terrible. Maintaining the little things are no longer a focus. Cleanliness, returning the decks to original furniture configuration is not done consistently. The staff- most friendly and helpful if asked.

Plenty of staff working, but nobody checking on guests and their needs just standing around. Reported the TV not working the first day and never got it fixed through the entire stay. Woman working the front desk over the weekend evenings was rude and not happy to help in anyway. Staff was more concerned about serving the locals that were hanging out at the pool and bar area. Juveniles were also in the pool area for an adult only resort. Would have spent a lot more money for drinks and food. If service had been better because of the poor service, we had to look elsewhere for drinks and food.

- GARY (4/5): - The Fred is a 22 room boutique hotel located on the beach at the edge of a very rundown city harbor front. The restaurant has potential, but it disappointed us on our first evening. We were informed the restaurant was out of pasta and half the menu was pasta dishes. Chewy chicken made up our dinner. The next evening, we ventured downtown to find a better restaurant and a convenience store. We started our walk on a nice promenade along the water but the other side of the street and all side street sidewalks were cluttered with parked vehicles and tripping hazards. Among the derelict buildings there were two full-service restaurants to choose from, but they have irregular hours and were not a good option for a late dinner requiring a walk back in the dark. There are two adequate convenience stores downtown. There is a sandwich shop beside the hotel which became our "go to" place. The hotel music was too loud, thumping along with profane lyrics until the 9:00 pm closing. Also a pack of dogs were loose during the 1st night and were loudly and slowly killing some poor animal. Housekeeping was irregular. No towels for 24 hours and the cleaners seemed to play games with the "please clean" and "do not disturb" signs. However we left the sign, we would return to find it reversed and tips gone but the room unmade. Beach sand is nice but there are large, sharp boulders in the surf and wading is not safe. Staff is unkempt. Can't recommend The Fred.

- Verified traveler (6/5): Didn’t meet expectations - Service is key when I stay at a property; however, some things just overshadow the service. As much as I want to give a great review because of the communication before and during the stay, I just can’t. For the price point the conditions of the property were not adequate. The older lady that oversaw the bar, had a negative attitude towards the staff that was visible to guest, a lot of the food options were not available for breakfast, lunch or dinner, the WiFi in the room was not reliable, there were tree roaches on the floor, the shower head was soiled, there was a placard in the bathroom that indicated if we wanted fresh towels to place them in the floor. We placed the towels in the floor and never received any fresh towels. We were given beach towels hours after our initial ask. The beach towel actually looked like a towel they mopped the floor with since it was stained with a rust color and black spots. The only thing that seemed cleaned or well maintained was the ocean, the sand in front of the beach chairs, shout out to the young man that racked the sand, our sweet waiter from St. Kitts with gorgeous faux locs, Delia, the pool + hot tub and the service provided by VI Exotic Watersports. Whoever has primary responsibility of this property, something has to be done. The staff is great, but it just seemed as if they aren’t valued. Also, to management, for the Holidays to happen every year, why were you not prepared?

- Teleange (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay at the Fred. I stayed for 7days / 6 nights. Its less than a 20 min drive from the airport. It is a boutique beachfront property. Intimate, great staff and conveniently located near the Fredericksted Pier (less than 5 min walk). The pool and hot tub are excellent. There is occasional live entertainment at the hotel ( DJs, Band, Fire Dancers) check website for schedule. The food at the restaurant is very good, although at times they were out of popular items on the menu. There are additional food items next door and at the pier. There is also a corner/grocery store to pick up small items like drinks, snacks, etc. You can walk the beach for almost a mile, leading towards the next beachfront property. Lots of shells. It is a rockier beach so water shoes are suggested. Water is beautiful and clear. I even saw sea turtles when walking the beach. Delia the front desk manager is amazing. Kind, courteous and responsive. I love the text feature which allows you to stay in contact and address any of yoyr needs like transportation, spa services, etc. Super cute boutique gift shop. Lots of options for clothing, jewelry etc. Danny is the best Bar Tender. Friendly, knowledgeable about the island and great service. The facility overall is nice. Rooms are as pictured. Bathroom very spacious. Sometimes an issue with water(yellow) due to pipes but that happens throughout the island at times. Overall I would recommend a stay at the Fred and will be back soon.
