Guest Reviews
- Liam (10/5): - Amazing place to stay. Couldn't recomend it enough. Such a cute traditional place to stay with an amazing breakfast and hosts.
- Berenike (10/5): -
- Christine (8/5): - I enjoyed staying at Gallery Nozawa, I would stay again. The owners are personable and very kind. My room was comfortable and large. The Inn only gets graded down a little for having a shared bathroom. Breakfast was excellent and it was so nice having a home cooked meal. The location is in a residential area and an easy bus ride or train to Kyoto center. The neighborhood was quiet and had a few of its own restaurants and shops. I love this about staying in a smaller residential community. There's a large and old gate entrance to the area, when I googled it I learned that the area was the original and oldest geisha district. Nothing remains but the gate.

- Sarah (10/5): A home from home in Kyoto - What a wonderful stay. It was like staying with family - homecooked meals, a cosy setting with daily snacks, tea and a washing service. Morio and Yoshiko went out of their way to help us, including giving a ride to the police box when we lost a bag (and help speaking Japanese to locate it) and to the train station when we left. The inn is a short walk from Tamabugchi station, linking up easily with many of the famous sights of Kyoto.
- Ute (10/5): -
- Katrin (10/5): - I have liked everything. Breakfast was very delicious and each day different. The owners of the apartment are very kind and helpful
- Mikael (10/5): Service was above all our expectations - Extremely nice and polite Host couple.
It was a joy to greet them,
Nice big room with a seating area overlooking the street.
- Sally (10/5): Authentic japanese stay in Kyoto - Friendly hosts

- aram nikola (10/5): - This is the 100/10 the best booking you could wish for, the room is super traditional and cozy but also very big and spacious, the hosts are the friendliest people in the world, their dog is the cutest.
When I come back to Japan I will go to Kyoto only to stay here again!
Thank you so much for the amazing experience!

- Egor (10/5): The best place we've been to! - That was the best place we've ever stayed in! With the most hospitable, kind and attentive hosts, we felt as comfortable as at home! The ryokan was extremely clean, beautiful and equipped with all necessary facilities and even more, everything to make our stay as convenient as possible.
The separate topic is the breakfast. It was cooked and kindly served by the hosts themselves and was absolutely delicious, so we got acquainted with the Japanese cuisine in the best manner possible.
In addition, we were absolutely delighted by the dog of the hosts! She is gorgeous!
All in all, that was a great experience and we wish the hosts all the best and hope very much to return to this wonderful place again! Everything was perfect
- Zaneta (10/5): -
- Natalia (10/5): - Gallery Nizawa gave us a true “wow” ryokan experience. Quiet, spotless, and full of thoughtful details. The host welcomed us so warmly, helped with our bags, served a delicious homemade breakfast, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. It felt less like a hotel and more like a caring home. We’d happily come back and highly recommend it!
- Anja (10/5): Wonderful, wonderful repeat stay - Repeat visit, and I was really looking forward to staying at Gallery Nozawa Inn for a while week. There are just two rooms, and I took the room at the back, which is smaller and has a little "verandah".
The inn is in a traditional Kyoto Townhouse in Shimabara, which is not really on tourists radar, and therefore not that busy, which I love. Very atmospheric, with quite a few older buildings, a refurbished lovely old sento and a bigger "super sento" in the neighbourhood, as well as a few restaurants. A JR train station is about 8min walk away. There are buses, too, but you'll walk about 10min to a bus stop. In theory, you can easily walk to Downtown and Kyoto Station if you have good legs.
The couple who own and run the inn are lovely and hospitable, and speak some English. Really, the rooms are equipped with everything you could think of, and there is a small communal landing with a fridge, some dinnerware and a microwave, and it is possible to eat in your room. There is also a very large shared bath - didn't use it but I went to several sento because I love sento. Toilet is private and inside the unit but not the bedroom, in the traditional Japanese style - mine was off a small anteroom where I kept my clothes, while my bedroom had plenty of room for a futon and a dining table.
I intended to rent a bicycle and was told that I can keep it in the house overnight, and when I set off in the morning, I was given a thermos of hot tea for my bicycle ride. My clothes were washed (they offered to wash clothes for me every day), and the room was thoroughly cleaned and replenished with fresh tea and lovely sweets every day. I think I know my way through Kyoto fairly well as a tourist, but was given great advice on places to visit, and lots of practical tips, too.
Oh, and there is a cute dog, too.
I really loved my week here. Nothing, really. If the other guests are noisy fellows you will hear it. Don't think this place will draw the party tourists, though.
I stayed in winter so these bed rooms can get cold, and the airconditioners are not that suitable to heat up a place well. Bring an extra warm layer. This, however, is something I encountered everywhere in Japan in Winter.
- Luke (10/5): A beautiful taste of Japan in Kyoto - Amazingly friendly couple who ran the establishment who spared nothing in helping us enjoy our stay. Even drove us to the station for our next destination. Breakfast each morning was fresh and fantastic too Nothing
- Elena (10/5): A fairytale in Kyoto - The ryokan was like a dream come true for me. It is very spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was yummy and authentic, and we are extremely grateful for our host’s care and hospitality during our stay. We also really love Ku and we already miss her fluffy head!
- Eric (10/5): L’esprit authentique d’un Ryokan - L’esprit authentique.
L’extrême gentillesse de nos hôtes. Rien
- Duan (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Flare Lynn (9/5): Excellent. We’re impressed with the breakfast. It’s so healthy and delicious. - Peace and quiet location, a bit walking to nearby attractions. You can ride bus or there’s a nearby JR local train station 10 minutes walk. The owner is a kind man and also the wife. He even offered to drive us to Kyoto Station on the day we checked out. We’re grateful for that. I don’t think there’s any.
- Perseus (10/5): Would rate 11/10 if possible - The room was pretty and very spacious, and the location was walking distance to a JR station. The hosts are the kindest people in the world, they left out treats and tea in the room every day, recommended places for us to go, and made the most delicious breakfast. They also did our laundry and drove us to the station when we left. I cannot recommend this place enough, it's the best travel accommodation I've ever stayed at.
- Kate (10/5): - Nice traditional house with very welcoming owners. Tasty and very nutritious brekfast.
Comfortable traditional beds and pillows.

- Sayoko (10/5): -
- Armin (10/5): - The host couple was very courteous and so friendly. Everything was really cozy and we had the best stay. The breakfast was also really delicious. Real Experience!
- Yanin (10/5): Pleasant stay - Well, what others said about the place is true.
It might seem far from the popular attractions but the transportation in Kyoto is very well covered. Nothing to complain.
- Alicja (10/5): - hosts were very nice. they did everything to feel truw japanse culture starting from accomendation, excellent breakfast to really kindness. they made our laundry for us and they give us a lift to train station. we receiced small gift to train and every day we reciced oranges for the way and in the evening there was alwaya a cake waiting for us with tea
- Sá (10/5): - An absolute must stay in Kyoto! It is a traditional house, with very kind hosts that keep iced tea and sweets for you when you return from the long days of walking.
The accomodation had all what was required. The shower was shared but each bedroom had toilet and hand washing sink qith all commodities, so it was very comfortable.
The breakfast was also perfect (both japanese and more western options) Nothing to comment really.
- Charlotte (10/5): WOW! - What a fantastic experience we had! It felt truly authentic and we had the best sleep ever here. What really elevated the experience was the lovely couple that run Gallery Nozawa- they went above and beyond - inviting us to have dinner with them and their friends, kindly offering to do our laundry, cooking an amazing breakfast, having iced tea / snacks waiting daily and driving us to the station afterwards! It is the best place we have stayed in Japan and we would recommend to everyone Nothing!
👌🏽
- alexander (10/5): - So far best location during 2weeks Japan. Very nice host and perfect breakfast.
- Claudia (10/5): Traditionelle Unterkunft mit allem, was man braucht.
- Natali (10/5): -

On reviendra. La climatisation manque un peu de puissance.

- Heidi (10/5): It's a home away from home. - We love the friendliness of the hosts, the yummy feast every morning, the laundry service, and the living space. The bed was a bit soft for me.
- Rz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marjorie (10/5): Wonderful hosts, delicious food, and a cute dog in an authentic Japanese home. - The room was large and comfortable for me. It was so nice to see the garden every day from my window. I really felt relaxed and at home. The homemade breakfast was delicious and I found myself looking forward to have my meal each morning. Yoshiko and Moriya (and their cute dog!) are such wonderful hosts. They are so thoughtful and kind. They gave suggestions on places to visit. There was cold tea and snack waiting for me each night and Yoshiko prepared iced water and cup for me to take while out in the summer heat. I was even given a ride to Kyoto station when I checked out. All without being asked. I’m so happy I got to stay here and got to experience their warm hospitality.
- Sheng (10/5): We had a unique experience hosted by some of the kindest people we met in Japan. - Our experience at Gallery Nozawa exceeded our expectations. The house was unique and held cultural significance. Our room was clean and cozy, and the breakfast was definitely the highlight of our stay. The hosts took care of us like grandparents would, which made our visit even more special. We couldn't thank them enough and left with warm feelings. looking forward to our next trip! Nothing
- Lia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elisa (10/5): Exceptional - I had a business trip in Kyoto and this Ryokan was the perfect stay. Both hosts were really nice and helpful. I got home cooked breakfast every morning which was super tasty! I really enjoyed the stay :)
- Anurak (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vivien (10/5): Exceptional - The location and the hosts! You need to bring sleeping masks if need a dark environment to sleep.
- Mary (10/5): A pleasant 3-day stay. - Great hosts, filling Japanese breakfast, coming back to find snacks and ice tea in the fridge at the end of the day. I have food allergies and they accommodated my needs. Would highly recommend if you want a non-western hotel experience. Nothing.
- Gianfranco (10/5): Experiencing the past in the present - Morio-san and his wife welcomed us and treated us like family. The traditional room, ambiance and breakfast were phenomenal. Morio-san even drove us to the train station. An experience I would truly recommend to anyone.
- Jill (10/5): Great comfy welcoming ryokan with awesome hosts in quiet area of Kyoto! - The hosts were lovely and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and there was cold tea and cake waiting every evening. The neighborhood was quiet. The bathroom had a great tub and shower. It felt like you were staying with old friends or relatives. They were extremely helpful and even did our laundry! I highly recommend a stay here if you want to escape the crowded areas of Kyoto.
- Jan (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect stay in tradional Japanese guest house - amazing hospitality and awesome breakfast.
- Gala (10/5): We stayed in Kyoto for about 4 days and stayed all the time at the Nozawa inn. This was without doubt one of our best ex - The coziness of the house, the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Nozawa, the breakfast which is the best in Japan! Everything was an absolute lovely experience Nothing, I would tell everyone to stay there
- Aniza (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matteo (10/5): Authentic experience - This is a traditional guest house with two rooms furnished in a classic Japanese style − comfortable and charming. Each room has a private toilet and sink, and the shared shower is lovely and kept very clean. The hosts are truly kind and go out of their way to help. The owner speaks English, which makes communication relatively easy. They also serve a generous, freshly prepared Japanese breakfast every morning − a real experience in itself. It’s a perfect place for those who are looking for a simple yet authentic stay that gives a real taste of Japanese culture. Honestly, nothing negative to mention given the context. Of course, it’s not a luxury hotel, but the overall experience more than makes up for that. During my stay, the weather was pleasant and the temperature was warm. I am therefore not in a position to comment on the issue of the house being “too cold,” as mentioned in other reviews.
- Irene (10/5): A place we called Home in Kyoto 🌸 - Staying in the Gallery Nozawa Inn has become the highlight of our trip to Kyoto! Our host Moria-san and Yoshiko-san had us just like their family members staying at their home -- Warm greetings and welcome to their beautiful 100+ years old Ryokan, every morning waking up to elaborate home cooked breakfast, local advice of the day to avoid crowds in Kyoto, we came home with delicious and well-chosen sweets 🍡, warm hojitcha tea and clean rooms ready for us. 😍 Unexpectedly, they even washed our laundry and offered to drop us off at the Kyoto station. (We hope these details don't burden them as these are beyond the services). 🥹 The location is perfect, as it's peaceful and serene, with conveniently close amenities such as restaurants, bus-stops and a great onsen nearby it almost feels surreal!
We had the entire upstairs 2 rooms for our family of 4. It is very spacious yet cosy, the futons are very comfortable, bathroom and toilets are clean and modern. We love the view of the zen garden from our windows 🪟. 🌳
We really enjoyed our stay and we'll miss it a lot. 🌸🤍 Nothing! But we just wish we had some more time to sit down and chat with Moria-san and Yoshiko-san. 🍓
- Julia (10/5): Excellent hosts and a traditional stay in Kyoto - Morio and Yoshika were amazing hosts recommending a great restaurant, shrine to visit and teaching us some Japanese. The traditional breakfast was excellent and they went out of their way to make sure our stay in Kyoto was exceptional. They are lovely people and we enjoyed talking to them about our day.
The location is in a quieter part of the city but easily accessible by train from Kyoto main station.
- Elena (10/5): Excellent stay - Excellent stay, the owners were warm and kind and went above and beyond. Just lovely. Accommodations were clean and comfortable.
- Natasha (10/5): We loved our stay and hope to visit again! ;) - We loved our stay at Gallery Nozawa in Kyoto. Easy walks to bus stop and local JR station. Taxi from Kyoto station and to most places were reasonable for our family of 4 - comparable to price per person on bus.
The room we stayed in was spacious for us, traditionally decorated and clean. Futon beds were comfortable. Handy having the Toto toilet and sink in the room as the bathroom with shower was shared use with guests in one other room. We didn’t have a problem of clashing usage with the other guests at all. Every evening after returning, there would be delicious sweet treats and flask of tea waiting for us. They had a laundry basket in the room and would do our laundry for us! Breakfast was Japanese style - homemade with care! Just a warning if you have your breakfast late, it will be tasty but cold, though miso soup and rice is always piping hot! :)
Morio-san and his wife were gracious and generous hosts and go out of their way to make sure you have the best experience in Kyoto. He even offered to take us to Kyoto station on our last morning to catch our train to next destination.
For an authentic stay to experience living in Japan as a local, this is the place is it!
- Elisa (10/5): Absolutely wonderful place to stay! - We had such a wonderful stay here, it was the perfect place for us to explore Kyoto from. The rooms are huge and incredibly comfortable, we absolutely loved the kotatsu table and the warm tea and snacks every day! The owners are the loveliest people, they genuinely make you feel so welcome and like you’re at a home away from home. They also prepare really delicious breakfasts which set us up for the day! Couldn’t recommend staying here more.
- Natalia (10/5): Exceptional - It’s a great authentic inn with wonderful host and delicious breakfast. Walking distance from train station as well
- Wanderer (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect place to stay. Thank you so much for your hospitality.
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Great owner and a nice atmosphere in this traditional old house
- Aaron (10/5): Exceptional - I slept better here than I do at my own home; it's just that cozy. As others have stated more eloquently, Morio and his wife are incredibly hospitable and cognizant of the most minor of details. This ryokan has the sort of charm that I thought could only be found in rural Japan these days.
