Guest Reviews
- Aykokul (10/5): Beautiful and comfortable - The old couple I believe who ran this place were extremely friendly and made us feel so welcome here. During April, the onsen was empty (only 150yen additional to use it) and the futon beds were surprisingly extremely comfortable. The view from the room was nice, the room really has an authentic Japanese feel to it. The breakfast was delicious!! Everything was great but make sure to plan your route here well, some trains and buses can be infrequent
- Rico (3/5): -
- Barbara (9/5): Mooi echt Japans verblijf, extra leuk met eten erbij - Wat een mooi ouderwets plekje. We hadden eten erbij.
- Fiona (9/5): - Genuine friendly Japanese ryokan. Rooms are generous- traditional tatami of course. Bathrooms are shared - there is a lovely outdoor onsen to enjoy and it was very quiet.
Minimal English is not a problem- the hosts are very welcoming and the Japanese breakfast delicious. Very close to the monkey park. You are a little outside of town, and your return walk is uphill, so you need to plan for meals /transfers.
The hosts ordered our return taxi, so still very manageable.
- Iván Misael (10/5): - Traditional Ryokan managed by a lovely family, with a magnificent breakfast, dinner and onsen. Going to the onsen in the evening was amazing since I had it almost for myself.
A few minutes walking to the entrance of the snow Monkey Park (therefore a bit far from Yudanaka station if you're not using the express transport)
- Kimberly (9/5): Great Japanese experience, wonderful staff. - Close to the monkey park, within a reasonable walking distance. Quiet location, wonderful staff and experience. Community facilities.
- Jo (10/5): Great stay, location within walking distance to Monkey Park, 10 mins. Room with a view, cosy. Lovely Onsen and home cook - Room was lovely and home cooked food. Nothing
I bagni in comune erano pulitissimi.

- Darja (10/5): 5* onsen! And spotless house! - Loved the onsen, very generous breakfast, spacious rooms and soooo quite. Loved it! Also the hosts were very sweet family.
- Karla (9/5): Rigtig dejligt ophold, ville helt klart anbefale et par overnatninger her.
- Kate (8/5): - Walk to snow monkeys and Shibu Onsen. The onsen was great. The hostage was lovely and it was very quiet
- Søren (9/5): - Really nice onsen

- John (10/5): An unexpected surprise - We booked this place on a whim just to see the snow monkeys. I didn't do much research about the town but we ended up falling in love. Shibu Onsen is amazing! Also, we were in Hakuba prior to our stay here and the day we left it was dumping. I was bummed to be leaving but we ended up bringing our boards with instead of sending them back to the airport with Yamato. We ended up riding Shiga Kogen, which was insanely large for Japan and had a lot more snow than Hakuba. We are already planning our trip for next year and will stay here. They offer a great dinner and the shuttle bus is right outside the place. And their onsen is free to those who stay. We had it to ourselves two of the three times we used it. On top of all this, the owners are so welcoming, helpful, and always smiling. There is nothing we didn't like.
- Pramita (10/5): - The outdoor onsen was wonderful. It's not a private onsen but I went super early and I got the whole place to myself. Soaking in winter when you can see the steam/fog rises from the water in the early light of dawn was surreal. The food was delicious as well This is really just nitpicking. The room is lovely but on the older side. It also got a bit too warm under the blanket with the heater on. Great if you love the heat!
- Carmen (8/5): - An old school ryokan, good value for money and the host was super nice. Although they don’t speak English, they have signs up everywhere and are very nice and kind. The dinner provided was also very tasty (we recommend you get the dinner as it is about a 10-15 min walk to Shibu Onsen area and there are limited food options nearby) The property was quite good - it was slightly dated / old but still clean enough. There is only one onsen bath outside and the rooms do not have a private bathroom/shower. You shower at the onsen and use a shared sink on your room level to brush your teeth / go toilet etc
- Robert (10/5): - Staff is friendly and speaks enough English to facilitate interaction with guests. They are very welcoming and kind. Ryokan is very quiet and peaceful with onsen included. Dinner was very good! Onsen is open to the public so may be very busy at times. Would be nice to have open 24/7 to ryokan guests, but only from 6 am to 10 pm.

- Audra Paul (8/5): Lovely - The onsen was clean and refreshing. The rooms were cute and were spacious. Staff were lovely Paper thin walls. Could hear normal conversation in the next room.
- Gaëtan (10/5): -
- Conor O'Leary (9/5): Best value Ryokan in Nagano - Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Facilities are all clean and very comfortable. The natural onsen was the best I've ever experienced. Food was delicious and very good value, I recommend it for at least one night of your stay. Bathrooms (toilets) are shared
- Pasquale (10/5): -
- Joseph (9/5): Comfortable inn with lovely owners. - The couple who own it are absolutely lovely and rush to accommodate your every need. The rooms are very spacious, especially for accomodation in Japan. Very traditional with large comfortable futon beds, a TV, fridge and a robust heater (which was really nice in Nagano’s cold winter).
The location is excellent, particularly if you plan on a visit to the Snow Monkey Park, being only about a 15 minute walk away. There are several cosy restaurants and izakayas also a short walk away. We didn’t get the opportunity to try the dinner but the breakfast was great and very reasonably priced at only 1,100¥.
The shared onsen is immaculate and very relaxing.
Overall it’s great value for money. It might be nice to have a private showering option, you obviously know what you’re getting into with a shared onsen showering space (no privacy), however a private showering room might be nice for those not planning on using the onsen as not all people are comfortable being nude in front of others.
- Elisabeth (10/5): -
- Ksenia Sazonova (10/5): Sweet and warm experience - What a charming, amazing and beautiful place. It looks like a traditional house with tatamis and futons, very pretty. The dinner and breakfast also were very good, and the lady that runs the place is so sweet. Thank you so much for a warm welcome
- Maaria (10/5): -
- Tereza (9/5): -
- Sashiko (9/5): -
- Norbert (8/5): Basic Japanese guesthouse run by friendly couple - Nice hosts
Good basic breakfast and dinner
Onzen Rooms are very basic
Carpets stained
- Yoshihiko (8/5): -
- Elena (8/5): -
- Bobby (10/5): A wonderful onsen stay - Wonderful hospitality, comfortable and great hot pool and amenities. The meals were delicious and well thought out. It was quite a walk to our room to the dining room and hot pools with lots of steps going up and down, which was fine for us but maybe not for someone with mobility issues.

Rien.
- David (9/5): Great place to stay, but NOT part of onsen association! (No key!!) - Very kind hosts, great and spacious room, onsen is nice and kaiseki dinner. It is NOT part of the ryokan onsen association! Therefor you will NOT be able to use the public baths in the city!! this should be stated more clearly imo, as there is no way of surpassing this very strict rule even for money.
- Friso (10/5): -
- Kevin (7/5): Definitely worth the money amd great location - Location was amazing. Very basic but clean with friendly staff.
- Takashi (10/5): -
No cobran toalla. Nada
- Svjetlana (10/5): - Room was spacious and clean, dinner delicious. Onsen was great and staff very helpful and friendly. The location is a bit further off the traffic infrastructure then I realized during the booking but this didn't make our stay in this lovely accommodation and town any less magic. -
- Marina (10/5): Authentic Japanese experience with warm hospitality - This is a traditional Japanese accommodation run by a lovely host. The owner was incredibly kind, attentive, and made sure every guest felt taken care of. The onsen was beautiful and relaxing, and the dinner was absolutely delicious — a true Japanese experience.
Highly recommended!

Nothing at all. Everything was perfect.

- Angelena (10/5): - This quaint gem was tucked away from the city's noise and provided an excellent getaway for me and my husband. Their private open-air onsen was downstairs, and they allowed tattoos, which were challenging to find in Japan. I would definitely recommend the breakfast provided in the morning by the family that runs the business, then hiking right up to Monkey Snow Park for a memorable memory. Thank you for closing our trip with this relaxing getaway!
- Cathryn (8/5): - I loved the on site onsen and the view of the mountains
Rien
- Diane (10/5): Great location, friendly staff and delicious food. - Great location for the bus and Snow Monkey Park
- Bertrand (9/5): -
- albi (10/5): -
- Laura (10/5): What an amazing experience. - Ok first of all if you are looking for a traditional place to stay and feel super comfortable in a cozy futon bed -> here you‘ll have it all.
The food is a hommage to japanese gods, it was so delicious and our host was the most amazing cute friendly granny you could have ever ask for!
The private Onsen - Wow! To be fair if you only want to see the snow monkey park, relax a little bit and have a chill time, here is where you have to go. But if you‘re an outdoor girl und want to live a little, it is a bit too far outside the city.
- Khan (7/5): -
- Marcin (7/5): Good for budget travelers but minimal comfort - Very low price and very hard working staff Very crowded onsen when accepting outsiders, short time (8-10 p.m.) when available only to staying guests.
Futoni so bili zelo udobni.
- Kelly (8/5): Home away from home with ultimate relaxation Onsen - - The owner was so sweet and made us feel at home
- On-site Onsen was amazing and authentic. A bath for each gender, but it was super relaxing and a great reset, yukata’s provided for the full experience, away from the busy Shibu Onsen
- Breakfast and dinner were really good, enjoyed it a lot
- Very comfortable futons & room, very clean
- 10 min walk to the start of snow monkey trail, 10 min to Shibu onsen, bus stop in front of the door - It is a slightly older house
- Jennifer (10/5): - La chambre japonaise traditionnelle était spacieuse, confortable et propre.
- Katarina (10/5): - Onsen was spectacular (go late at night and you may have it to yourself!). The futon beds are very comfortable relative to other futons on tatami’s we have slept on. The kaiseki dinner is excellent and made with love. The owners genuinely care and you can tell they love hosting international people! The town of Yamanouchi is also very lovely with great food options if you decide to walk down. Just be sure to get to the ryokan during the day during spring/summer, as the last train to town from Nagano station leaves at 5pm!! It’s a 13,000 yen taxi ride to the hotel otherwise (learned from experience)
- Sam (9/5): What an amazing place, the owner/host was so wonderful, the dinner and breakfast amazing. - Loved everything, dinner, breakfast, onsen, rooms, owners. Nothing
- carmen (9/5): A genuine and traditional small onsen stay - Good value, traditional, with onsen and japanese styke meals Nothing all good
- Tea (10/5): - Very clean and authentic.
The rooms were very nice, the owners provides
yukatas as well.
The location is superb - a short walk to the Snow Monkey Park - you can also arrange a transport with the owners without extra charge.
The outside onsen is beautiful.
Even though some things are older I do not mind that as everything was very well taken care of and clean.
- Laxman (10/5): - Cozy inn, located in a picturesque place, checked all boxes for me
- Christian (8/5): Simple and autentic - Very nice small authentic ryokan with an outdoor public onsen. It's located 15 min walk from Shibu Onsen town, but close to the entrance to Monkey Park. There's a busstop right in front of the ryokan. The bus goes to the station and monkey park entrance and ski area. Very kind and serviceminded couple, who speak enough English to explain how it works. Good Japanese breakfast and dinner. Only coffee is in the vending machine outside. Only futons in the room. No chairs. No private bath or toilet in the rooms. The onsen is nice but simple. Credit cards are accepted. Good info about bus and train ate given.
- Chi (10/5): - The proximity to Monkey Park. Dinner and breakfast enjoyed by parents, picky kids did not enjoy as much. We had to store luggage after check out at another nearby hotel but it cost 500 yen per bag.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Denis (10/5): - просто восторг!
- Jakub (10/5): Minshuku Miyama is definitely one of the best places I've ever stayed. The staff were unbelievably nice and helpful, - Minshuku Miyama is definitely one of the best places I've ever stayed. The staff were unbelievably nice and helpful, always ready to help with a smile. The food was absolutely amazing, especially the homemade dinner with local ingredients. And the location in the middle of beautiful nature was fantastic. Minshuku Miyama is a real hidden gem, perfect for anyone looking for peace and an authentic experience. I highly recommend it!
