Guest Reviews
- Irene (7/5): - Nice, quiet at night. Slept well. Quite shabby, needs refurbishment.
Accueil minimal.
- Charlie (8/5): Central location and very clean. - Good location for the parkrun. 5 minutes from centre of Girvan and the railway station. 2 minutes from ASDA. Very clean. Good breakfast. Should have paid extra for an ensuite bathroom.
- Peter (7/5): Very handy and good value - Nice place All fine
- george (8/5): -
- ALASTAIR (9/5): -
- Hans (3/5): Waardeloos - Slecht verpakt ontbijt, slechte bedden en slechte communicatie, geen mogelijkheid tot diner, eigenaar was moe Alles
- Richard (10/5): - Beds were very comfortable It wasn't ensuite as requested but it all worked good
- Albert (7/5): -
- Robert (5/5): All OK except for the comfort of the beds in our particular room. - The cold 'continental' breakfast was OK and met our needs. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was very close to the main street in Girvan and also close to a major supermarket and the railway station and bus stops. It was a short walk to the harbour. Although the first floor rooms are above a bar, it was all very quiet at night. The shower pressure was good and hot water plentiful. The two single beds we had were very uncomfortable. The mattresses, in our opinion, were much too soft and had a tendency to tilt the sleeper to one side. We woke up very stiff. Also, the room we stayed in was quite cramped and had no chair on which to sit, though one was provided on request. The plug sockets were hard to access for two older people.
- Tim (5/5): OK for a one night stopover. - Hot water.
Fridge in room
OK for a one night stopover. A bit run down
Some mold in the bathroom, bathroom door scraped on floor.
Not very big
- JOSE ANTONIO (4/5): - Location maybe Bad communication with the staff, dirty, average accommodations
- Martin (8/5): Value for Money and friendly owners - Quiet Location and Sky TV in room. No bar or hot food service
- Stephen Evans (6/5): - Was in Girvan Too much furniture for a small room & shower too small for a bigger bodied individual
- ANTONY (7/5): -
- Gareth (4/5): - The whole place is long overdue a total renovation, both structurally and cosmetically.
- Mary (1/5): We didn’t stay. We left and booked in elsewhere - We didnt like anything. The room was shabby and grubby. The beds were very small and literally on their last legs. There was a musty smell in the room. Absolute waste of money. We could never have stayed ther Everything could have been better. When we got there there were no staff anywhere. Eventually we got access to the room which was small and uncomfortable. After about 10 minutes we decided there was no way we could spend the night there. Another thing was the fact that the outside door was to be left unlocked all night, giving direct access to the rooms to anyone who chose walk in through the night
- bryan (9/5): Comfy overnight stay. - Friendly staff, comfy bed with quality pillows. Great view of Ailsa Craig from our window. Nothing to dislike as we knew exactly what to expect when we booked. If you want top notch facilities and luxuries you'll need to spend lots more money than this establishment charges.
- Robert (8/5): -
- claudine (8/5): - Staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful. Place was spotless clean. Beds were very comfy. Breakfast was continental in the room, which was fine but we were not made aware of this when booking. We paid quite a high price and we had no problem at the time as we thought we would get a cooked breakfast to start our day touring.
- Eileen (5/5): Only suitable for an overnight stay. - The room and bathroom were clean and there was a plentiful supply of continental breakfast food provided in the room. The main entrance was locked and only after telephoning was told that entry and exit was through a side fire exit door that remained open throughout the stay. The key of the room was to be found in the room door. The bathroom was adjacent to the room on the corridor. The only place to sit whilst eating the continental breakfast provided in the room, is on the bed. Perhaps a small stool/chair would be beneficial.

- Irene (7/5): My friend was woken abruptly from a deep sleep at 11am - ish to be ‘roared at’ that checkout was 11am. - This hotel was booked for a friend of mine who enjoyed himself at a party and could not drive home. He was rather inebriated and enjoyed himself a little too much. I called to book a room in the first instance and was told there were no rooms available.
I then went on to the World Wide Web to search through a site called Airbnb and a room in the hotel was available so I booked and paid for it.
When I called the hotel to inform them of this I was told ‘I didn’t want to let that room’! - Bizarre comment from a business, I thought!
- Kathryn (6/5): Nice pleasant stay in warm, comfortable twin room. Pleasant stay overall. - Good location. Warm, Comfortable twin room. Lovely warm separate private bathroom.. The lady who cleaned and stocked rooms was so friendly and helpful to us. She looked after us well! Very Pleasant stay. Only continental breakfast. Ok for us but not if you like cooked breakfast… no dining room. Rooms a little tired but overall still comfortable.
- JOHN (6/5): -
- Matthew (9/5): - Breakfast was good continental with a good range of options,
Room was clean and spacious
- Zahor (2/5): Extremely poor service - Location of the place was ok just off main road There is no reception,I had to ask other guests on how can I get help to get to my room.
The furniture was poor and I was not sure about how clean the bedsheets.
I don't recommend this Hotel to anyone.
- Joe (8/5): New Year in Girvan - The housekeeper was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for Elaine. She went the extra mile to ensure we had everything we needed. Also having Sky in the bedrooms was a massive plus as we love watching the darts. Everything was fine and there was nothing to complain about.
- Maureen (8/5): Value for money in this clean, comfortable hotel. - The hotel is in a good location. It is clean and comfortable. The owner/staff are very pleasant and can't do enough for you. It's a continental breakfast which I'm not keen on but understand it's a small hotel with not a lot of staff. Not all rooms are en suite. The facilities were adjacent to my room so it was only a minor inconvenience.
- Leonie (9/5): -
- Angela (7/5): Okay for overnight stay - The lack of reception and breakfast in your room is a bit odd. That said, my room was as per the photos, clean and comfortable. The breakfast in the room was perfectly fine. It was all ok for me for one night but not what I would call a leisure hotel. Very tired looking
- Wendy (8/5): - Very friendly staff Not much going on
- Jane (7/5): - The hosts are lovely couldn't do enough for you. Needs a little tlc the beds a little uncomfortable.
- Mark (7/5): -
- Fergus (1/5): It’s a sh**hole - Nothing it’s a Sh**hole Everything it’s a sh**hole
- Richard (8/5): -
- JiaRi (9/5): -
- Les (7/5): Good value friendly stopover - Helpful staff.
Good central location with easy parking Double room on small size.
Pub downstairs closed early so unsure how close staff were if needed
- Charlotte (9/5): - We took our three dogs and they kindly upgraded our room to provide more space. Staff were very friendly, especially Elaine who made sure we had everything we needed. There was ample food provided for breakfast, certainly something for everyone.
- ted (5/5): - Nothing Not a nice place to stay
- Andy D (8/5): -
- Poortman (6/5): -
- Andrew (1/5): - Sadly the hotel was like a building site with work going on in most of the rooms.
- Christopher (4/5): Fairly run down hotel in run down location. Breakfast very poor, although warned about being in room -
- THOMAS (10/5): -
- david (7/5): -
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Arlene (1/5): Would not recommend - Sky TV in room No cooked breakfast. Continental breakfast in room
No food available in the evening
No bar open only for a football match
No staff available,only cleaning lady
Booked for 2 nights but only stayed one night
- jane (7/5): Just needed a room for the night whilst travelling - Clean new bathroom and comfortable room although one of the two twin beds was in need of replacement due to lumpy mattress! The bed - as above and rather basic Continental breakfast.
- Morgan (6/5): Meet our needs - Location was good contanental breakfast was nice Would have liked to have a cooked Scotch breakfast
- Elisabet (5/5): - Skönaste sängen på resan
Vänlig och underhållande värd Sorgligt att se byn som nästan helt stängt ner. Puben i hotellet var stängd och massor av lokaler nedlagda, till salu eller för uthyrning.
- Margaret (4/5): - Location. Hotel is very old no one there to greet you. Bar and restaurant shut. No cooked breakfast cold coisants. Would not stay again. Not value for money. Beds very uncomfortable smell in bathroom. Unpleasant stay. Very disappointed. Bit like Falwty towers.
- Mike (5/5): - Location was OK, but facilities very basic. Appearance of hotel is not very attractive - no obvious reception area, downstairs entrance somewhat grubby,
- Les (7/5): - Facilities were all there. No option for evening meal or even a drink!
- Sarah (7/5): Girvan, a quiet, clean - Polite friendly cleaner, only saw owner on arrival with brief but comprehensive instruction. Clean if a little dated. Quite location, lots of free parking. Very comfortable beds and good shower. The carpet lifting and tiles rattling in the wind! Bit spooky! 40 steps up to our room! Continental breakfast in your room.
- William (5/5): Nor the best - Girvan is friendly but seemed run down, I felt sorry for the town. An amazing location - sea views, sunsets, but at the edge of the world somehow as well. The arrival was weird, it was not clear where to go so I had to ring up. That was then fine. The room was not really big enough with a double bed and little other space, especially as breakfast was provided to eat in. The place seemed run down but was safe and OK and being managed, but I wouldn't fancy it again.
- Dave (4/5): Not recommended! - Breakfast was ok in room. Hotel very in need of refurbishment, bathroom and shower below standard and dirty.
Double bed was 2 single beds and not very comfortable!
- Phillip (4/5): Disappointed - Good location Breakfast was only continental which wasn't stated when booking and also the bathroom was in a separate room in the corridor which is described as private bathroom which is also a rather misleading
- Heleen (6/5): - When we came the smell of food was not attractive and ik took some time before we got the key.
The breakfast was in the room and that was very good and plenty
- Gian (9/5): A little gem found in Scotland - Lovely clean room, staff really helpful and a really good value for money continental breakfast
- Jim (1/5): Very disappointing - Location OK No reception. Room not clean. Bathroom not on-suite. Whole place completely run down. Parking area full of rubbish.
- Patrick (10/5): - Lovely rooms
- Alister (5/5): -
- Paul (2/5): The Not so Royal Hotel, Girvan. - Bar staff unhelpful.
Breakfast was fruit and cereal in room.
No evening meals served as stated in booking brochure.
Room was dismal.
Bed uncomfortable.
Sky TV was intermittent.
Bathroom was not in the room, had to walk on shared landing.
Carpets dirty.
Worse place I've stayed. Not worth £80 per night.
Downstairs door left open all night unattended, didn't feel safe.
I would rather have slept in my car.
- Thomas (9/5): -
- zulqarnain (4/5): Made mistake by saving maybe £10 to £20 from other hotels in the area and turned out to be horrible place.room too tight - Nothing much apartment from palce to kip overnight Nothing really its very old and certainly not moneys worth
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Thomas (6/5): Nice and friendly staff, we stayed for one night on our way up north. - Nice and friendly staff. It is and older hotel, so expect an older hotel. The room and bathroom were nice and a small breakfast is in the room.
- karen (8/5): Love a wee visit to girvan , and will be back . - First of all the lady who gave us our key was lovely & very helpful too .
The hotel was clean , beds were so comfortable so no complaints there , needs a wee bit of TLC other than that it was a perfect wee stay .
The location is great . Nothing really we were only there for one night .
- michela (1/5): -
- Jerinovska (2/5): Complaint about Royal Hotel - Convenient location We were very disappointed with our stay at The Royal Hotel in Girvan. On Booking.com it was clearly stated that the room has a private bathroom, but in reality, the toilet and shower were outside in the corridor. Every time we needed to use them, we had to get dressed and go out, which was very inconvenient. The bathroom itself had no hooks for towels or clothes.
In addition, the room was only cleaned superficially. There were greasy marks on the furniture handles and dust in several places, which gave an overall impression of poor hygiene.
This experience did not match the description or our expectations.
- Peter (6/5): - Very basic and in need of update. Fire alarm system was defective (fault showing on panel), which when coupled with no reception or staff onsite was a bit concerning, this was reported to staff by phone.
- John (8/5): Great wee hotel for a stay in wonderful Girvan. - Great simple hotel. Very comfortable bed and nice room. Checking in was a bit of a hassle. There had been a confusion over room bookings but it got resolved fairly swiftly.
- Understands (5/5): Passable - the room's internet and tv were appalling and the shower was weird and barely effective.
- Ian (5/5): Fair breakfast but hotel inc decor a bit rough - Breakfast was ok decor incl carpets etc
- Gillian (8/5): Very good -
- Steven (10/5): - Staff were really helpful & nice.
- Allan (7/5): Good -
- James (4/5): Not as advertised - After working all day, and a 3 hour drive to the hotel, we were looking forward to a meal and few drinks in the restaurant downstairs. I had to ask while checking in where to go for food and was pointed in the direction of local take aways. The bar & restaurant on site were closed! This also meant no cooked breakfast the next morning - although it was paid for and mentioned on the confirmation.
They had kindly left plates and cutlery in the room but it was obviously too small for a table or any other place to sit so one of us was on the bed & the other on a stool at the vanity desk. Drinks were fizzy juice from a can!
The room we got was certainly not one used on the website! Clean enough but very small and one of the lights at the bedside had been pulled out the wall. The floor was uneven & not level.
Bathroom was a bit dated but adequate & there were toiletries if needed.
- Deeoz07 (3/5): Disappointing - The location is convenient for Girvan
The room was clean, though very dated
On site car parking is beneficial
The "continental breakfast" was plentiful, but not what we had expected, having stayed before We have stayed at The Royal Hotel previously, and received a warm welcome, and value for money
We arrived to an empty hotel, and had to wait for someone to come to us, and book us in
The whole of the downstairs pub and hotel lounge were closed and not open at all during our stay, which wasnt really pleasant, having to stay in the hotel room all evening due to bad weather, and not being able to access an evening meal
Our twin ensuite room was unavailable, so we were given a family room with one double bed, and two very small childrens beds, which were not very comfortable
We have previously had a full English breakfast, which is one of the reasons we returned. This has been replaced by a "continental breakfast" or mainly prepacked items, plus fresh fruit. Though plentiful, its not what was expected
All in all, very disappointing, compared to previous visits, and I doubt we will return
- Donna (8/5): Very good - Owners friendly and helpful but unobtrusive
Room very nicely decorated and clean and comfy No staff available when we first arrived no obvious reception area
- Andrew (10/5): - Lovely staff great food relaxed atmosphere
- William (9/5): Great stopover - It had everything we needed, very practical, simple, straightforward place
Park on road outside
Arrived late - no problem, called number, given key and full instructions
Continental breakfast was very well supplied already in our room - no hassle in the morning, checkout 11am - no rush, no checkout, leave key in door.
In Girvan up side road Not a scenic location but perfect for a stop over
- Eoin (8/5): Very good -
- Grant (10/5): Waiting for the ferry - Great value for money. Close to the port. And the gentleman working was from local to our home Slightly dated
- Davie (8/5): Very good -
- Hazel (5/5): Glad it was only 1 night - Location No toilet in room. Was very small and needs updating
- Dykes (9/5): Superb - Cleaner was really nice n helpful good location
- Mcginley (9/5): Superb -
- William (1/5): Nobody home - Nothing. Went to another hotel Got there about 5.30pm to find the front door locked. Eventually found someone at the back of the hotel who told me they had double booked my room even though the place looked totally empty.
- Kiki (10/5): Exceptional - Good reception and comfortable No colgate, was missing
- Deirdre (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (6/5): Girvan struggles. - It was reasonable. And breakfast was ok as it ended up being continental in our room as the breakfast area and hot food was closed. Breakfast area and hot breakfast closed so continental in your room. They tried hard but not what we expected. No reception when we got there. Had to phone to get into room.
- Danny (7/5): Good -
- Jane (10/5): - VERY PLEASANT STAY, CLOSE TO MANY LOVELY AREAS BY THE SEA. VERY PLEASANT STAFF AND OWNERS
- George (2/5): Very poor - Terrible room full of dampness with wallpaper falling off at top corner not what we booked didn’t stay had to seek other accommodation lost our money according to Hotels .com agent owner refused refund. RIP off stay away from this hotel.
- Jane (8/5): Very good -
- Colin (1/5): Bad -
- Betty (1/5): It was dreadful.not comfortable, sour milk, not what we expected. The outside of the building looks lovely, not the in -
