- Brad (8/5): Great place.ifyou want to visit the monkey park. One night is enough - Friendly staff. Picked us up at train station. Drove us to monkey Park. Prepared a wonderful dinner and a great breakfast. Private onsen is nice
- Leonardo pange (10/5): Japanese style and original vibes - The location was amazing, the Japanese style room also. The staff was courteous and available, speaking a good amount of English. She also gave us a ride to the snow monkey park free of charge. 10/10 recommended
- Eugen (10/5): Edo period ryokan to feel like home - One of the best experiences in Japan, great place, delicious food, loved it all!
- Marc (10/5): - Very friendly and kind owners. Traditional Japanese room, spacious. Nice breakfast!
- hannah (10/5): Beautiful onsen base to explore snow monkeys - What a wonderful place to stay during our trip- lovely from the accommodation, private onsen to the break fast and helpful staff Couldn’t be improved
- Rikke Taudal (9/5): - Amazing food! Went for breakfast all 3 days and dinner one day - was really really good og great service! The onsen is great too especially the outdoor bath. Beautiful garden. Really god for travelling with a baby. The owner drove us to the monkey park and back. Will definitely recommend for a relaxing and great stay!
- olivia (9/5): Séjour plaisant dans un cadre authentique . - Accueil chaleureux . Repas copieux , typiques et soignés . Rien
- Julianne (8/5): Memorable, restful, I learnt a lot - It was in a fabulous town. We chose this because it was an old historic Japanese building- as such we have different expectations of what such a building can provide. The owners are lovely and the garden and onsen experience were absolutely special. Na
- Janelle (9/5): The owners were lovely and drove us to the Railway station and to the Monkey Park ( no charge ) - We had a traditional dinner which was exceptional.. but breakfast was ok .. the fried egg was cooked hours before and was cold .. the rest of breakfast was ok We booked 2 rooms with friends .. they had mats on the floor and we had beds .. maybe better communication next time
- Rebecca (10/5): - I took my 16 year old to stay here and the whole experience was amazing. I can't recommend this Ryokan highly enough. The staff were welcoming and made sure we were comfortable and happy all the time. They explained the cultural expectations clearly. The room was glorious. Cozy and warm, looking out onto a gorgeous garden. Dinner was delicious and provided samples of many dishes. The onsen was relaxing. The beds were comfortable and I enjoyed the green tea in our room.
We were then dropped off at the snow monkey park for opening where we saw the monkeys early before the crowds. This whole experience is one of my favourites in all my years of travelling. My son will always remember this experience. Loved everything 💗
- whitbread-phee (10/5): Owners were so warm and inviting into their property, they even drove up to see the moneys and even to our train. Was a - Authentic feel

- Sybille (8/5): - Ein zauberhaft geführtes traditionelles 2 Sterne Riokan.

- Steven (9/5): -
- Stephanie (9/5): Lovely historical ryokan with friendly staff - Gorgeous historical property
Lovely friendly staff
Really lovely room overlooking a gorgeous garden The town was pretty dead, and getting food after 5pm was challenging. But that might have just been the time of year? But might be worth asking in advance what restaurants will be open.
- Martin (10/5): Would highly recommend for a traditional Japanese Ryokan. - Lovely traditional Ryokan Onsen hotel which is exactly what we wanted after 4 days in Tokyo. The owner made us a lovely fresh breakfast each morning (if ordered) and the onsens ( one for men and separate one for women) were excellent. We were even driven to the entrance of the snow monkey park when we wanted to visit there. We asked for a traditional Japanese room which was an experience not to be missed as a Westerner.
- Sergey (10/5): - Очень приветливый персонал. Готовый помочь с любой проблемой
- Klaus (9/5): - Family run business, owners trying to help as good as they can, good quiet location, very pleasant stay
- Jolyn (8/5): Great value onsen hotel - Very friendly authentic japanese onsen hotel. Great outdoor onsen. Lovely breakfast and service
- Katrin (8/5): -
- Natalia-Alicia (10/5): -
- Jeroen (10/5): I had a zen relaxed comfortable stay, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful! I would definitely recommend! - The room was fantastic and authentic and spacious!
The onsen was great!
The food was delicious!!!
I asked to extend my stay one more night, which was not a problem.
- Riccardo (9/5): Un bel soggiorno autentico e rilassante - Un esperienza autentica e rilassante.
- Liesbeth (8/5): - Charming and olderd accomodation, great breakfast and dinner.
- Manuel (9/5): -
- Riain (9/5): Suberb and would highly recommend to anyone that asked. - Transported us back in time. The traditional rooms and robes were the highlight of our trip to date. Staff were so friendly and owner even drove us to the Snow Monkey Park.
Also the Onsen inside and outside with the Japanese garden…just breathtaking and calming. They swap the onsens around based on sex which is understandable as the norm is to have no clothing on. Everything was superb, just new bedlinen/covers needed.
- Marion (10/5): The best stay ever! - Everything is amazing: location, the house, the welcoming, the area. Loved it! Nothing
- Desirae (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ward.d.khatib (10/5): Exceptional - If you ever do visit, I highly recommend Yudanaka Yumoto Ryokan in Yamanouchi. The hospitality, the atmosphere, the beautiful rooms – everything about it felt like a warm embrace. The okami-san was the kindest person, perfectly embodying the spirit of the place. It’s the kind of experience that makes you want to return again and again – a place that showed me peace, that showed me beauty. For as long as I live, I won’t forget my time here.
The setting takes me to a past where samurai once sat here, sipping green tea, listening to the water as it trickled through the garden – a soft, serene sound that whispers of peace. Even the smallest stream in the tiniest garden can bring calm to a traveller's heart.
- Juha (10/5): Amazing guest house, especially the meals - One of the best hotels I have been to. Located in a cosy village close to the snow monkey park, friendly staff who gave us a ride to the monkey park, spacious rooms with a nice tatami area. If you go, book a dinner. It was just amazing, lots of varieties and everything was delicious! The best meal out of many splendid ones we had during our trip to Japan. Maybe it's just me, but the onsen was way too hot. None of us could use it, which was a bit of a shame.
- Jeekin (8/5): Value for money - Spacious room. Comfortable futon. Friendly staff. Was driven to entrance of Snow Monkey Park. Minimum amenities.
- Julian (9/5): For a genuinely relaxing and traditional style Japanese stay it is a keeper for our next trip to the area. - Very clean albeit older style ryokan. Minimalistic and non intrusive, spacious rooms with a nice view to an inner garden almost zen-like.
Staff very helpful and amiable, offered to drive us to the monkey park entrance up the mountain which we gladly accepted. There’s not too much to do in the area but relax and enjoy the clean air and the hot onsen baths. A trip to Nagano is 35 minutes away for a bit of spicing it up.
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Casey (10/5): Yudanaka Yumoto is the only place I will ever stay visiting Shiga Kogen. Yasuyo was the most hospitable host on planet e - Everything Nothing
- Tanguy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Haddon (9/5): Superb -
- Eliana (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay at Yudanaka Yumoto! The hosts were so friendly, spoke good English, and had helpful recommendations. They kindly drove us to the monkey park (otherwise we wouldn't have had time to go) and to the train station early in the morning. The rooms were lovely and spacious, the grounds were pretty, and the onsen was excellent. It's a great location as well close to the train station, the main bus line, the post office, an ATM, restaurants, and more (including a great onigiri shop). We highly recommend staying here and hope to come back!
- Pellet (9/5): An amazing experience - The traditional place and the friendly staff
- Jamieson (7/5): Great location with lovely and very helpful staff, perfect for a weekend trip. - Great location, very kind and attentive staff Both male and women areas of onsen area had trouble with lack of hot running water in the showers
- Wenjing (9/5): Superb - The landlord is friendly and patient. It's a great room, very retro Japanese. The hot springs are super relaxing. The hot water in the sink is slightly smaller and less stable
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Great Ryokan in Yudanaka that has apparently been there since the Edo period and run by the Yamoto family. Lovely old style Japanese rooms with toilet and communal showers / onsen. Yasuyo-san was kind enough to drive us to the monkey park and back and even took my wife shopping for Ichida-gaki !
On top of that breakfast was cooked each morning specifically for each guest.
Nothing was too much trouble.
Lovely relaxing stay - would certainly recommend
- Jasren (10/5): Exceptional - We only spent one night there to visit Snow Monkey Park - we wished we had stayed longer. Great location, just a 5 min walk from the station. We had clean good sized room, and the outdoor onsen was great with snow falling as we relaxed. Dinner was also at the onsen and we weren’t disappointed by the kaiseki style meal. To top it off one of the owners will drop you off at the entrance to monkey park and pick you up as well. We had a great stay.
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Jeff (8/5): A great value onsen stay without all the bells and whistles of a more expensive location. - Very comfortable, basic, clean onsen stay. Onsen was very nice, we had a room which looked out on a lovely pond and garden. No meals were booked so we walked down to some options at the train station. Very close to the snow monkey park which was excellent. The facilities were neither new nor newly refurbished so it had an authenticity as an old school onsen. Met our expectations.
- Saurabh (8/5): Very good - The staff was very helpful. Yasue-san made a delicious breakfast, which was appreciated. She also helped us get to the monkey park. The ryokan room was super spacious. In-house onsen was good but could be maintained better. It was a good value for money. The place seemed a bit old and could use some maintainance. But the property itself was traditional, calm and relaxing.
- Fabalowso (8/5): You, me and Yudanaka - The staff were lovely. Drove us to Monkey Park and to train station on leaving. The spaciousness of the accom and outlook onto the garden was wonderful. Air conditioning kept the room nice and warm. I found it tricky trying to fit in with all the slipper rules and knowing where to put the luggage and towels in the room. Futons were a little uncomfortable. You may need to put down some additional futons that are provided if required.
- Lim (10/5): Perfect, cozy stay! We love the place so much! The staff always greeted us warmly when we leave / come back. - Family-run, cosy, traditional vibes. Feels really authentic! The garden view was amazing! Outdoor spring is great! Hmm. I have no complaints! My stay was really great! I cried a little when i left :( My only complaint is that the western guests staying there at that time were a little noisy. Other than that, everything was perfect!!
- Kathleen (10/5): Traditional caring stay at Yudanaka Yumoto - The authenticity of the property, the gardens, and the staff were very attentive and helpful! The owner speaks very good English and drove us from and to the train, the monkey park, and restaurants. She was so god to ensure we were making good decisions. The staff are all very gentle and sweet. The onsen bath was very good for the body aches.
- Andreas (9/5): Value for money, great home cooked food and lovely family atmosphere - Family run, super friendly Felt like sent back into 1980’s
- Alessandro (8/5): Very good -
- Lim (7/5): Good -
- Clewett (10/5): Exceptional - The room was excellent, authentic, very clean and comfortable. Cotton kimono were provided for after Onsen, one of the onsen was outdoors in the garden. The gardens were amazing, beautifully curated with mature trees, shrubs and Koi Carp. Our host was very kind and helpful, she gave us a lift from the station with our bags and also gave us a lift to the monkey park. She also very kindly lend us some suitable footwear as the monkey park was icy and a little muddy. This has been my favourite place to visit in japan so far. We also had the breakfast and dinner provided both were exceptional and a beautiful experience.
- R (3/5): Poor - Nothing really Cold smelling of damp and paraffin (kerosene) heaters. No staff overnight. Had there been an emergency there would have been no help. The paraffin heater in the lobby was turned off until 7am in the morning (freezing). There was no shower in my room. The whole place was a disaster.
- Aleksi (10/5): Exceptional - Ryokan staff were very friendly and helpful. Private Onsen was great. Rooms were very clean and spacious. The traditional futon beds are really good to sleep on. Really worth it! No complaints really.
- Matthias (10/5): Exceptional -
- Navarro (9/5): Relaxing, worth while - The staff was friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to help us with laundry services and drive us to snow monkey park and to the train station We knew prior to booking, but no private bathroom
- Tram (9/5): Cozy and traditional stay. - Staff were very kind and accomodating. Location was not too far of a walk from the places we wanted to go
- Budget (10/5): Exceptional - Hosts are extremely friendly, drove us to the monkey park and also to the airport after our stay. Room and entire experience was amazing! The home cooked dinner and breakfast were also outstanding. There are two onsens which switch genders at 9pm each night so you can try both, they are extremely nice after a long day out.
- Brian (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyed, hotel owner went above and beyond to see to our needs were full satisfied thank you. - Yasuyo the owner was incredible, took us to see the monkeys, picked us up after we saw the monkeys, took me to the ATM to withdraw some money and then at the end dropped us off at the train station for our journey back, thank you. Breakfast not westernised, this didn’t particularly bother me as it’s not about the food, all the Japanese people are very friendly and welcoming.
- Filippo (9/5): Great Ryokan to go and visit the Snow Monkey Park - Really authentic traditional Japanese experience in great location.
Loved the Onsen of the place Nothing
- Kellie (10/5): Exceptional - staff were so helpful with everything including collecting us from train and taking us to snow monkeys. entirely authentic experience
- Arden (8/5): A unique and intimate experience that makes you feel like part of the family - Spacious and sprawling, family-run and homey. Massive meals personally prepared and presented by the proprietress. Very attentive! The room had a toilet and sink only. I didn’t pick up on that when reserving. Bathing or showering required going across the property to the onsen, which had gender-specific hours.
Scheduling meals was a little tricky for tourists like us who weren’t exactly sure where we’d be at what time. Respect to our fantastic chef, no one’s fault, but this is where a buffet-style setup has its advantages.
- Chang (8/5): nice family-run ryokan - spacious room
Very good Japanese dinner.
Staff very courteous Parking lot is 200M away, and covered by snow.
No lift to upper floors.
They did not tell me that there was a smoking area inside the hotel though they saw me going outside to smoke
- Rui (10/5): Magical experience and amazing hosts - Absolutely loved the romantic vibes and snowy weather in our onsen town. Magical place to experience the ryokan culture. Our hosts were so gracious and caring Nothing! Loved every moment.
- Wuyan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kai (9/5): Superb -
