Guest Reviews
- Katrice (10/5): Memorable stay in the rainforest with fantastic hosts. - Jason the owner and Ryan the guide were fabulous and really made our stay memorable. Jason was an excellent host and Ryan’s ability to spot wildlife made the river cruises and walk great experiences. We were really fortunate to see a mother and baby orangutan on the short trail walk from the accommodation along the ridge. The river cruises allowed us to see numerous proboscis monkeys, long tail and pig tailed macaques, langurs, rhinoceros hornbills, crocodiles and various other birds. Ryan tried his hardest to find elephants but they remained illusive despite his best efforts.
- Aisha (7/5): Great unique experience with friendly staff, facilities need work - Loved the staff and the food was excellent. Really nice group we were with. Enjoyed the hikes and boat rides were ok The bathroom and bedroom had a lot of flies and insects, we were not able to get good sleep on both nights. The bathroom is designed so that the shower water spreads to most of the bathroom like a flood

Echt alles was top.
- Jonathan (10/5): Amazing - It was truly an incredible experience. We would especially like to highlight the service. It was genuinely the best we have ever had.
A huge thank you to Jason and the entire team for making our stay so special. The boat tours were absolutely amazing, and on our very last day we were even lucky enough to see wild orangutans. That meant we were able to spot all of Borneo’s Big 5, some of them even up close. It was an unforgettable experience.
The rooms are beautiful, the food is outstanding, and once again the service simply could not have been better. Every little detail was thoughtfully taken care of.
Thank you for such a wonderful time. We will always remember it. Honestly, we loved absolutely everything. The only thing to be aware of is that the accommodation can only be reached by climbing around 600 steps. However, we were well prepared for this and were clearly informed about it before our arrival. There is also a luggage room at the bottom where you can easily store large suitcases without any problem.
For us, those steps actually made the stay even more special, as it is the only accommodation located on top of the hill. It truly enhances the feeling of being deep in the jungle. In addition, there are many orangutan nests in the surrounding area, which means there is a real chance of seeing these incredible animals up close.
- Josephine (10/5): - We had an incredible stay at The Last Frontier, largely thanks to the exemplary service from the entire team. Jason is an exceptionally attentive and considerate host; his local knowledge made our conversations insightful and fun.
Guide Ryan made extreme efforts on the river tours to spot even elephants, but also monkeys and other exciting wildlife! Will never forget that.
The rooms are spotless with modern bathrooms and the food is extraordinary: the banana pancakes are maybe the best you’ll ever have! A true gem in Borneo.
- Marlies (9/5): - Locatie, vriendelijke personeel. Goede gids. Niets
- Trine (10/5): - Det hele 🤩Placeringen, personalet, udflugterne. God mad. Ingen ting
- allyson (10/5): Outstanding - I very rarely give 10 out of 10.
I will only be repeating what all the other reviewers are saying… all true. So I will just say. Thank you Gert for your excellent communication. Thank you to Jason for delicious and thoughtful food. Being the perfect host and improving my knowledge of Malaysia, not just Borneo. And Jason a brilliant wildlife guide.
- Stephen (10/5): Fantastic Borneo jungle experience! - We loved being up above the canopy.
The organised trek and boat trips were great, Ryan was a fantastic guide. Gert was super friendly and very informative. The food was outstanding. Loved it being a small resort with only 4 rooms and bonding with fellow travellers! A real adventure! Highly recommended. Although the stairs were initially a challenge we soon got used to them and they became part of the experience!
- Jill (10/5): -
- Niti (8/5): Unique experience of staying on the hill accessible by 600 steps - Great experience of staying on the top of the hill. Food was excellent, staff were great. Small details that could have elevated the experience such as water/water glasses in the rooms, hand towel, top sheet to go with the single cotton blankets or a very light duvet. The nights got cold and just a lightweight cotton blanket seemed inadequate.
- Steve (10/5): -
- Lene Stenberg (9/5): - Fantastiske verter.
- Jessica (10/5): A special place - I had high expectations of the Last Frontier, and somehow it exceeded them. We were looked after from start to finish by the very impressive Jason - we learned so much from him about the area, and Malaysia in general, and he was extremely thoughtful about everybody's needs.
We went on three boat rides and a hike. Ryan, our guide, was very knowledgeable and could identify animals from just a quick glance (he's quiet at first but if you ask him questions you'll learn a lot). We felt completely safe with him and spotted four of the "Borneo Big 5", despite the rainy season, as well as many other animals. The morning cruise costs a bit extra (95 MYR per person at the time of writing) but was totally worth it for another chance to see the animals - on ours we saw orangutans and rhinoceros hornbills, although of course nothing is guaranteed.
The lodge itself is very comfortable with big beds and hot showers - the only thing missing is mosquito nets (there are screens on the windows but a few still get in). If you're worried about other creepy crawlies entering the room, we didn't see any. The restaurant on the other hand is open at the sides so when the lights come on in the evening it's full of life - you'll see moths and bats flying through (but don't worry, they're not interested in you). The food was delicious - while breakfasts were western style, we were served classic Malaysian dishes for dinner. Meals are set - there is no menu to choose from - but they were extremely thoughtful about dietary needs, so let them know in advance (vegans and people with allergies are well catered for here). And while there is no wifi, we had data connection with both Celcom and Maxis at least some of the time.
This is a special place where you'll get a more intimate experience of nature than at the bigger lodges. We loved our stay and whole-heartedly recommend it. Nothing - but just a note about the stairs. If you're thinking of booking here, you're probably aware that you need to climb 250 stairs to reach the lodge, and you'll need to do this at least 3 times during your stay. It is a bit strenuous in the heat, but you can go up slowly and they should be manageable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness (in my opinion, it's totally worth it to stay here!) The same goes for the hike, which follows a ridge - there are some steep sections and you'll need to be careful about your footing in places, as the hill drops away on either side. But if you can manage the stairs you should be able to manage the hike too. The nice thing is that the group is small (max. 8 adults) so don't be shy about speaking to your guide if you need to slow down

- Katarina (10/5): - We loved the location, the rooms and the service. The food in the middle of the forest is amazing and the chats with the owners insightful. Highly recommended!
- xinfeng (10/5): - We were very glad to have spent three beautiful days and two nights in this cabin. What impressed me most was the food here every day. It was so delicious and very professional. Jason showed great care to every guest and remembered everyone's preferences, making us feel at home. Moreover, Jason is proficient in multiple languages, which is amazing. During our communication with him, we also gained a deeper understanding of the land we came to, and he provided us with many suggestions for our future travels in Southeast Asia. Every day we were looking forward to what animals we would encounter the next day. There were gains as well as regrets. We saw many kinds of hornbills and proboscis monkeys, and also had two close encounters with the orangutans living near the cabin. But does this mean there will be a next time and the time after that? It was a great experience and we will come again. Wish TheLast Frontier all the best.
- Alan (10/5): A unique jungle experience - The last frontier boutique resort is uniquely close to nature.
Four rooms stand over 100m above the access track facing the Kinabatangan river. The rooms are spacious, cooled by an overhead fan.
The food was generally excellent, served in a small restaurant with great views over surrounding secondary rainforest. The river tours and morning hikes very interesting and enjoyable. Ryan really knows about wildlife!
On the way up the 540 steps when we arrived we were pleased to see a wild orangutan in the undergrowth near the path. Amazing. A few mosquitoes in the afternoon - but they can sell you mosquito repellent.
- MUYU (10/5): - We spent three days and two nights at The Last Frontier Boutique Resort, and it became the highlight of our time in Kinabatangan. Before arriving, we thought the 9.7 score on Booking.com must be inflated—but after leaving we all agreed it deserves even more.
Price & Value
Our package (full board, with optional transfers at 120 MYR per person) came to 1050 MYR per person. This is mid-range compared to other riverside lodges, but the experience felt far beyond the price.
River Cruises & Jungle Walks
The heart of Kinabatangan is, of course, the wildlife viewing. We’d read online about rushed boat trips with little to see, but here it was the opposite: every cruise ran longer than scheduled, and our guides went the extra mile—literally. On one rainy afternoon they searched for pygmy elephants for over three hours, heading deep upriver while other boats turned back. Thanks to their patience and incredible eyesight, we were the only boat that day to see three pygmy elephants playing at the river’s edge. Their knowledge of every species, subspecies, and habitat made the experience even richer.
Lodge on the Hill
The lodge sits up on a forested hilltop, reached by about 550 wooden steps (roughly a ten-minute climb for fit guests—worth knowing for those with limited mobility). The rooms are clean, airy, and surrounded by wildlife. We saw a mother-and-baby orangutan less than 50 meters from the lodge and hornbills flying past while we sat at the restaurant. Staying here truly feels immersed in the jungle.
Food
The meals were superb—the best we had in our eight days around Borneo. They catered carefully for my vegetarian diet, preparing delicious curries and fresh dishes each day. We joked that we regretted the climb on the way up but were thrilled about our choice at every mealtime.
Service
The owner speaks excellent English and Mandarin and took care of us like family.
- Kate (10/5): Perfect getaway to see wildlife, good food and the sounds and smells of the jungle - Location was high up so great for looking out towards the river and jungle. It felt away from everything which is what I personally wanted.
It is up a lot of steps! I like that as my exercise for the day! But won’t be for everyone but if you don’t want steps just don’t go as you are warned in advance.
Gert and staff are all really friendly knowledgeable and happy to assist and food was very tasty indeed too!
Property is nicely done with beautiful wood throughout.
Room comfortable and dining area very pleasant. Nothing to fault really. :-)
Maybe extra chill out space to lounge or hammock but that’s a very small thing.
- Janec (10/5): The highlight of my 6 months traveling!! - Absolutely amazing experience which I would highly recommend!! Gorgeous room, delicious food, superb staff and the most awesome views. Gert is super friendly and passionate about Borneo and we loved all the interesting chats with him. Ryan was a fantastic tour guide, very knowledgeable and we were so lucky to see lots of wildlife. All the staff were friendly and the whole resort was clean and beautiful. We loved the mix of boat tours, hikes and relaxation. Can't wait to return some day! Nothing
- Alvin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nic (8/5): Very good -
- Aurora (9/5): Loved it! - The place is stunning. The lodge itself is simple, yet beautifully nestled in the forest. The staff are excellent—knowledgeable, kind, and incredibly helpful. It’s true that the schedule is quite rigid, as others have mentioned, but we didn’t find it too bothersome. -
- Stephan (10/5): Completely in the Rainforest - Very nice Host Gert, thank you for this wonderful experience. Nothing
- Anton (10/5): Just fantastic - even for a pregnant woman - This was a fantastic experience and stay - altogether. The attentiveness of Jason and the staff makes it feel like a 5 star hotel, whilst the location and rustic feel makes it feel like you are truly in the heart of the jungle. You fall asleep to a light breeze and the sounds of the jungle. My wife is pregnant and we were a bit worried about mosquito diseases - but Jason explained that the ridge at which the hotel is at has barely any mosquitoes because of the altitude. He also suggested a non deet mosquito spray that really works. We had 0 mosquito bites during our stay. I can’t get all the things into a review. But such a gem of a place. Thank all of you ❤️
- Donna (10/5): Perfect jungle experience. - Everything! Our time at the last frontier was the highlight of our trip. Jason is an amazing host, we felt like we were staying with family. There are only four rooms so it’s very private and the only property that is in the jungle and not by the river. The food was some of the best I’ve had whilst visiting Asia, I need gluten free and couldn’t believe how tasty it could be. I highly recommend this property to anyone who wants an authentic jungle experience with some home comforts and 5 star dinning. Thank you to lovely Jason for looking after us and the amazing food and Ryan for being such a wonderful guide, we saw the big 5 even lots of elephants. Nothing it was perfect!
- Dorthe (10/5): - Love this place, emagine bukisinf a resort on top of
- Michelle (10/5): For a real boutique jungle experience - worth the climb! - Jason and his team were excellent, knowledgable and went above and beyond for service and assistance. Transfers were easy, river trips and exploring the ridge line were great for wildlife. Food was amazing.. pack a light bag and leave heavy bags at the bottom for the stay, as walking up the stairs was strenuous. Saw wild orangutan’s and macaques around the property. If you don’t like stairs, possibly not for you, but worth it for the hospitality, fitness and experience
- Stuart (10/5): Faultless...a place run by people who love what they do. - I cannot rate this place highly enough. Firstly the staff were the nicest bunch of people, who genuinely care that the guests have a great trip, and are passionate about the environment and the wildlife. Secondly, this is the only place in the area actually inside the jungle, rather than on the river. And that matters because you're much more likely to see an Orang utan in the wild staying here. We were lucky enough to see one, and the guys running the place were overjoyed for us. It was a truly breathtaking moment. And we saw monitor lizards and Hornbills causally wandering/ flying around.
The guys running the place could not do enough for us. Also the food was great, and included. Travel is quite a hobby for me, I have been travelling the world regularly for over 30 years now and I have stayed in a lot of places, from luxury hotels to eco-resorts etc. This rates as high as any experience I have had anywhere. I wish there were more places run this well and with this much passion in the world. Nothing
- Peter (9/5): Immerse yourself in the rainforest and it’s natural beauty - The property is situated atop a 100m high ridge and so stands in mighty isolation amongst the surrounding rainforest and has tremendous views down to the Kinabatangan river.
The food is all inclusive and was of extremely high quality and you just pay for your drinks.
The two cruises we did were fantastic and the hike along the ridge has spectacular views on clear days ( you can see as far as Sandakan). The 600 or so steps up to the property are a challenge so a basic level of fitness is a good idea and pack lightly but you can leave heavy items or stuff you don’t need at the bottom in a secure building.
Climbing up and down a couple of times a day isn’t so hard and it’s definitely worth it.
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional - An incredible and affordable package experience for 2 days, which includes all meals, 2x boat cruises and 1x jungle trek. The lodge is located on top of a hill with beautiful views of the river. The staff are brilliant and do everything they can do ensure your stay is perfect. Rooms are large and clean. Food is some of the best we’ve eaten in Malaysia - it is absolutely delicious! Huge thanks to Ryan, the chef, Gert and the team for making our stay incredible!
- Kwan (10/5): Excellent jungle stay and exploration - The resort is very well managed. Host is super friendly and we felt well taken care of, including delicious meals, great experiences on outdoor activities and the cozy room. Although the resort located in the middle of the mountain, everything is in good condition and very clean.
- Karla (10/5): The best day of our travels so far- exceeded our expectations!! - - The food was fantastic- good variety of meals throughout our stay with large portions.
- Gert was a fabulous host- very informative and friendly.
- The organised tours / activities exceeded our expectations and we really enjoyed the boat cruise. Many thanks to Ryan for being a great tour guide.
- The Accomodation was clean and perfect for what we needed. Nothing
- Belinda (10/5): Exceptional - We loved staying here. Everything was amazing, I would highly recommend.
Jason was so generous with his knowledge and we really enjoyed our stay.
- Anna (10/5): Highlight of our Borneo trip - Gert and Jason have clearly perfected the stay for their guests over 18 years running the place. The itinerary was perfect, and so unique compared to other resorts in the area. The view is spectacular and food was great, and we saw the big 5 on our boat tours!
- Wai (10/5): Amazing stay with great adventure, good food and friendly people. - A boutique resort on top of the hill with good views. This resort is well maintained and clean. The team is helpful and friendly, and the food was delicious with good mix of local and western. We had an amazing stay and river cruises with them. -
- Maggie (10/5): Absolutely fantastic stay! Can’t recommend enough - Everything was great. Very clear communication about pick up and they were right on time. The room was very comfortable and seemed very new. No bugs got inside and being up on top of a hill gave great views and there weren’t many mosquitos at all. Food was excellent and plentiful. Our guide Ryan was incredible and we saw all of the Borneo Five animals including young orangutans building their nests at the base of the property. Jason the host went about and beyond to explain everything and accommodate us. I left my medication there and he figured out how to get it sent to my hotel on Mabul Island (5-6 hours away by bus and boat) while keeping it refrigerated. Incredible service!! I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Highlight of my trip. Nothing - everything was excellent
- Slothlikecat (10/5): Perfect, amazing wildlife and good food. - Absolutely perfect stay for myself and my daughter. Picked up in English Tea room in Sandakan and they arranged with there to keep our luggage whilst we waited for transfer, looked round Agnes Keith House and had fruit juice and fruit platter in the beautiful garden. Exactly on time Gert turned up to transfer us wearing a top stating The Last Frontier Boutique Resort so easy to spot. Then he said he could put us in a more suitable room which was great so had the twin rather than double. 8 staying including us and picked up another couple on way. Then a family staying as well. Then had lunch there, spaghetti bolognese, excellent and went on first boat trip at c4pm for 2 hours, saw elephants, hornbill, monkeys incl probiscus, crocodile, river was busy with boats in key sites but amazing nature and Ryan the guide was excellent at spotting wildlife and going fast. 2 more boat trip, saw same plus orangutan. Lovely food. Also a walk up hill, no wildlife on that but nice view. There are 600 steps.
- Matt (10/5): Birthday Borneo Adventures - Everything about our stay at the Last Frontier was absolutely unforgettable. Gert and Jason, what perfect hosting! I have travelled a fair amount in my life yet cannot recall better. Communication was always clear and concise regarding requirements etc.and the information extremely helpful. Jason, the knowledge and advice you imparted during pick up and drop off was excellent. Thank you, and thank you all of the team for all of the delicious food and especially for Baljit's birthday surprise and cake. Of course, she had the added surprise of seeing a herd of pygmy elephants swim across the Kinabatangan river on our early morning river cruise that day - fabulous! Thanks for organising that as well - ha! We so enjoyed the river cruises and wildlife spotting. We saw more than we could have expected - Ryan has developed an incredible eye for spotting things that we could not have spotted ourselves. Aside from the magnificent spectacle of the pygmy elephants we also saw Proboscis monkeys, Crested Serpent Eagles, Rhinoceros Hornbills, Oriental Pied Hornbill, various Kingfishers and other birds, Long and Pig Tailed Macaques, Crocodiles, butterflies and moths of such colouring. It really is a jungle experience at the Last Frontier. All in all, a truly amazing time. We didn't want to leave. As per above in closing, leaving. .
- Agnes (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was great, we loved our stay and didn’t want to leave at all! We were picked up by our gracious host who told us a lot about Borneo. After ascending the 600 step stairs, the view from the restaurant was amazing. Furthermore we saw a lot of wildlife on the boat trips!
- Georgie (5/5): Passable -
- Catriona (10/5): Exceptional - Such a wonderful experience with host Jason who went above and beyond for all the guests. He helped us with loads of our plans and travel logistics, and is super knowledgable and passionate about the jungle and river itself. The meals were absolutely delicious, and the location is very special nestled all the way up in the jungle - worth the stair hike! We saw an Orangutan from the balcony over lunch - a real trip highlight.
- Joan (10/5): Incredible - Food excellent - best we had in malaysia
View - awesome
Wildlife - interaction with nature - unique and could not be replicated for costs
Ethics of the lodge - applaud owners Noise insulation - but in real terms not 'doable' - the rooms are attached, they are on stilts so you will be able to hear movement and noise.
Think that most guests will be of similar mindset so will be courteous and thoughtful to other travellers.
- Louise (10/5): Exceptional - Jason is a lovely guy and the perfect host. He went above and beyond to cater for his guests. I am a coeliac and Jason really pulled out all the stops to present beautiful meals for me. The location is great and you are right in the heart of the jungle...we had a visit from 2 orangatangs! The visit to kinabatangan river and the last resort boutique hotel was a highlight of my trip to Borneo....very special
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional! - What an amazing place! Yes, you need a level of fitness that will get you up and down 600 stairs multiple times but it's worth it. Only 4 rooms, so it's private. Rooms are functional, thoughful and clean. Food was fantastic (the reviews about the amazing banana pancakes are correct). Opt to do the additional morning boat ride if you can, it's totally worth it and beautiful on the river in the mornings. Since there are a maximum of 8 guests, the boat is a lot roomier than the other boats you see from larger lodges. Each trip is 2 hours (walk from the lodge to the boat about 12 mins each way).
If you can't live without the internet, get a local eSIM before you come. You get signal in the dining area.
Ryan was a great guide. We saw an orangutan as we arrived at the lodge, lots of proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, macaques (pigtail and long tail) along the river. Heaps of birdlife.
I can't say enough about Jason. He started the lodge from nothing over 20 years ago. His passion for the area is inspiring. We had some great conversations during the transfer and at the lodge. I required urgent medical attention at the end of our stay and Jason was outsanding in his care for me. He is one of a kind and enough of a reason to stay here. Not a thing
- Julie (10/5): - The most amazing stay. The kitchen excelled with all our food allergies and nothing was too much trouble for them. We saw wild Orangutans near the lodge. Only 4 rooms, so quiet and less mosquitoes than those places on the river. I loved my stay and highly recommend to others.
- Thomas (10/5): Great! - Location is just perfect. We saw orang oetans at breakfast and while walking down the staircase. I think this place is more unique compared to the other lodges alongside the river.
Room is cosy and basic. You do have hot water and at nights the temperature is quite comfortable for sleeping.
The guys at the lodge spent lot of effort to make your stay as best as possible. Food is also good. I would definitely recommend this place!
- Pawel (10/5): Amazing place - Service provided by Jason and Gert is outstanding. We loved the room, the location, activities and the food. Could not be any better.
- Douglas (8/5): Very good -
- Ang1985 (10/5): Marvellous - LOVED this place! Jason, one of the owners, was so knowledgeable and friendly and we really enjoyed chatting to him. The room was lovely, clean and comfortable. The food was great! The boat cruises on the river were fab and our guide Ryan could spot things from a mile away! We booked the extra early morning cruise which I think is well worth it, we saw a lot of variety of birds that we didn't see at other times. And we were treated to a wild male orangutan going about his business within 15 minutes of arriving - holiday made! The 600 metres of steps were challenging but we knew this when we booked and if you can handle the steps I wouldn't hesitate in booking this place. Writing this review is making me sad to not still be there.
- Amanda (9/5): Great staff and a little haven after 600 steps! - Amazing place at the end of a 600 step climb. The staff were fantastic - couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly esp Jason and Ryan. Even managed an evening in the local badminton club!! Nothing - only preference would have been for Malaysian food for every meal
- Bethany (10/5): A really memorable stay, our trip to Borneo wouldn’t have been the same without it! - What a find! Our stay was just brilliant. A really personalised experience, the food was incredible and all activities were in small groups. We had several different dietary requirements within our group and they catered to this extremely well - lots of variety but each meal was equally delicious! Jason provided the best hospitality we’ve had in 5 months in Asia. He went above and beyond to help us organise the next parts of our trip, booking onward travel for us and giving us some great tips for our upcoming Mt Kinabalu climb! Thank you so much 😊 Nothing!
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional - A lot of nature and much more warmth expected us in this resort when we reached it after climbing up about 600 stairs. A small paradise was built here with a lot of sweat from the owners and their staff. The rooms are clean and offer everything you need. Food is really excellent there. Thank you Jason!! Jason is also very helpful if you have questions according your further travel planning. Thanks to Ryan,, we had two boat trips and a jungle walk with him.Very impressive experiences,
- Marta (10/5): a once in a lifetime experience - This place is really amazing. We searched a lot to choose the right package for Kinabatangan River and this was really the best choice. Such friendly and helpful staff, we felt so welcome.
There are only a few rooms, no big tourism and that's why you feel so comfortable here.
(Don't be put off by the stairs, they are easy to climb).
Every dish was delicious (even vegetarian at my special request) and the banana pancakes with caramel sauce? OMG the best pancakes we've ever had!
The river cruises were very relaxing and we saw all the animals (monkeys, crocodiles, hornbills, elephants). We even had an orangutan outside our room visible from our window!
We had an unforgettable experience here.
Thank you very much Gert and the team, you are doing an excellent job.
- Sophie (10/5): Exceptional - The location was absolutely stunning, certainly fully immersed in the jungle habitat. Every meal was home cooked, beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Gert, Jason and all the staff were welcoming, friendly and really helpful. We managed to see a wide variety of wildlife on both river boat cruises and the jungle trek including crocodiles, many varieties of monkey, hornbills, herons, snakes, an orangutan and the Borneo pygmy elephants! Can't fault the place at all - would thoroughly recommend for anyone who wants a true experience of the wonderful kinabatangan river and surrounding area. N/A
- Purves (9/5): Superb - Gert, Jason and the team were all friendly , excellent hosts. Really looked after Kerry when she felt unwell. Great location and food. Highly recommend. Andrew and Kerry
- Nnmm (10/5): fantastic !! - one word: amazing! if you had the chance I would recommend to book this place! Jason Grent and the staff are very friendly, they have just 4 rooms so they take care of all their people! this is a true experience into Borneo wild life…we had a lucky meeting with an orangutan nearby the rooms! the eco resort is located up to a hill but is not difficult to go upstairs since you are incredibly absorbed in the nature! they organised everything perfectly: 2 boat trips and one trekking up to a hill (about 2,5h). You have enough time to rest.
They also care a lot about our transfer at the check out to Semporna, we could not ask for more!!
The food was also good, even if for me a little bit too “western”, banana pancakes and nasi goreng were special!! rooms are big essential and comfy.
this experience is worth to do, just remind the Jungle itself is a little bit noisy special during the night, we slept well anyways.
thanks again! I would come again!
- Bryn (9/5): Superb -
- Kimandrobintravel (10/5): Bird’s Eye View - This is not just a ‘business’, it is a passion! Jason and Gert are sharing a piece of the rainforest to help travelers experience wildlife, insects and plants in their natural habitat. Jason and Gert have created a safe and relaxing environment for all guests to experience true nature.
The cabin has wood walls and floors - simple design and furnishings, and so comfortable. There are 2 chairs on the balcony, outside of each room, to enjoy the local flora and fauna. The daily schedule is designed for 2 nights, but we wanted some additional quiet time in the jungle so stayed for 4 nights. Jason made sure that we received different meals for lunch and dinner - he really works to make all meals special! The banana pancakes with homemade caramel sauce is phenomenal! The dining room (with ceiling fans) is also a place that you can hang out - have a coffee, read, play cards, visit and/or observe your surroundings. There is always a pitcher of cold and refreshing water waiting for you. There is a terrace off the dining room (no fans) with benches and small tables - great to look out over the landscape.
We went on an amazing evening boat cruise every evening (included in the package). The optional sunrise river cruise starts at 5:30 am - beautiful and quiet (additional small fee). During our cruises, our guide/captain Rodel helped us find Pygmy elephants, crocodiles, hornbills, kingfishers, Silver Leaf monkeys, Proboscis monkeys and macaque monkeys. We absolutely loved our time on the Kinabatangan River!
Jason, Gert and staff are so calm, friendly and informative. A once in a lifetime experience/place to enjoy nature and learn about/observe amazing Borneo animals in the wild!
- Sue (9/5): fantastic experience with great staff - great to be so close the nature and the rooms were of a great size with very comfortable beds. the staff are excellent as is the food. the trips provided are incredibly well organised and the guided really know how to help you experience wonderful wildlife in their natural habitat. the stairs are not a problem in terms of the number of steps and it’s worth the effort for the great views. the hand rails could benefit from being repaired to make going down easier
- Yuki (10/5): Priceless experience. - Every people are so friendly and nice! Hospitality is great. Due to this hospitality, you feel safe and you can enjoy jangle without fear. Sound of insects, birds and nature things are so great in and around guest house. You use all your seances and you find your own new ability. I went with 74 years old grandfather and 70 years old grandmother. They did not expect such a jangle adventure, but they are so happy about this stay and they enjoyed a lot, but you need to take about 500 steps to the guest house though. Now they have more confidence to try everything. We saw many other European tourist on the river cruse boat. Many of them had grey hair. How old you are, you can enjoy this place and experience if you are open to new things. I went with 4, 8, 11 years old kids too. They enjoyed too. They loved pancake so much. Thank you for meeting allergy request too. Communication before trip was also very nice and quick. Thank you again for the great experience!
- Kimberley (10/5): amazing location with incredible hosts :) - location was amazing we even had orangutans behind our room visible from our window!
the staff are exceptional. Jason picked us up from sandakan and immediately built up a great repore with us especially my 1 year old son who he did everything from start to finish to ensure his safety and comfort from picking him up some drinks and snacks for the transfer to preparing him his own meals and providing a car seat! we also got to see wild Pygmy elephants all thanks to our hosts getting some intel and alerting us all and offering an immediate transfer to the boat and 45min journey to see them!!!! this wasn’t at any additional cost to us and wasn’t something we were expecting or promised so just incredibly great hosting :) no comments to add here
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional - This place was absolutely great - authentic and great for spotting wildlife. The river cruises were very relaxed and we saw lots of animals, including crocodile, monkeys, kingfishers and even elephants! The rooms are comfortable and the food is high quality, particularly the beef curry and fried rice. Don't be put off by the staircase as the payoff is very worth it - we saw 3 wild orangutans whilst walking up them! Jason and his team are brilliant hosts, told us a lot about the local wildlife and couldn't do more for us! Strongly recommend!!
- Thomas (10/5): Excellent in every aspect - Lodging, meals, guiding... all was superb (including the sightings of pygmy elephants and orangutans). The people at the Last Frontier Resort are very passionate about their jobs and they excel at it. Rodel was a great guide and Jason went out of his way to make sure our onward journey by bus would work smoothly. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Would be 11 out of 10 (if that was a possibility).
So if you get the chance - book it :)
- Julia (10/5): Highly recommend! - If you are up for a unique experience in the Borneo jungle, look no further. This boutique hotel was very Borneo, nestled on top of the hill, accessible only by tackling 600 wooden steps. The place was peaceful, misty in the mornings (as mornings in Borneo rainforest should be), sounds of jungle singing you a lullaby each night. Truely beautiful experience. Our host, Jason is a fascinating person, telling stories of the area and also helping us with itineraries for our remaining trip; on top of that ensuring everyone was looked after and well fed (thank you Jason for accommodating our request for mee goreng breakfast). Our guide for a trek and boat cruise was full of passion for and knowledge of the rainforest and the animals. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and surprisingly, there weren't that many mozzies up that high. The food was delicious, however, designed primarily for a western customer. Please note that Jason was kind enough to accommodate our request for a more local breakfast.
- Lema (10/5): EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND PACKAGE - Im so glad I found this place because it was absolutely amazing in every way. I did the 3 days 2 nights package which included two river cruises and a hike along with the absolutely exceptional culinary delights that Jason cooked up. Jason is the best host I’ve ever come across. He taught us so much about Malaysia and it’s wildlife and cooked beautiful meals. He and his staff work so hard to make your stay is amazing. The rooms are so clean and comfortable. I loved the cruises, where you can spot the animals in the wild and the hike was great too. The property is on top of a hill and you have to climb quite a few stairs to get there but that is all part of the adventure. If your luggage is too big then there’s lockers at the bottom of the stair where you can leave your big luggage and you carry up a smaller bag. This was the highlight of my trip and I would recommend this place anyone. If I were to stay again I would book directly with them. everything was perfect !!
- Donna (10/5): Fantastic job to Jason Gertz and Rodell thanks so much - Everything was exceptional, a very unique jungle resort that we will be visiting again for sure.
- Jade (10/5): wonderful environment so close to the wildlife - The food was a particular highlight steps! but I knew about them when I signed up.
- Richard (10/5): A naturalist's dream in the rainforest - We spent 6 nights at the Last Frontier Boutique Resort and enjoyed every second. The opportunities to view wildlife are truly amazing, both at the hotel and nearby (at one point we even had a visit from an orangutan with her baby and juvenile). The hotel is very comfortable; the staff are all exceptionally accommodating; and Jason's cooking is reason to visit in itself! Very close to the Kinabatangan river, right in the heart of Sabah, the Last Frontier Boutique Resort should be on everyone's list. We will definitely be back. We actually liked the path leading up to the hotel, it adds to the whole amazing experience, but the 600 steps that need to be walked may be difficult for some people (and there is no other way of accessing the place). That said, if you are fit and able-bodied, "Jacob's Ladder" through the rainforest to the top of the hill is all part of the magic; and, as a bonus, you can encounter wildlife along the way.
- Tobias (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay at The Last Frontier was definitely one of the highlights of our whole trip to Malaysia! The accommodation and the hosts are simply amazing!
- Thefirstddodo (10/5): Amazing stay, thank you very much! - The personal, the food, everything The pilows in our room were not very good and a bit hard to sleep on.
- Toni (10/5): Awesome experience - I would definately recommend this place over the larger lodges. Only four guestrooms, so you will get a more personal experience than in a crowded river boat.
Gert and his team will make you feel welcome from the first minute. The rooms were clean and comfortable and food was great. Thanks to our knowledgeable guide Rodel, we saw orangutans, pygmy elephants and many other animals.
Easily worth the 600 step climb to see the view from the top of the hill.
