Guest Reviews
- Toby (10/5): Very comfortable and smart. Delicious breakfast with lots of choice. - Comfy bed. Smart bathroom with large shower, Space to put toiletries in the bathroom
- Holger (7/5): - Lage nahe am Zentrum der Altstadt und der Kathedrale
Sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal
Gemütliche Atmosphäre in einem alten englischen Pub
- Barry (8/5): -
- Hannah_Patel (3/5): Very expensive for what it is - need to improve the cleanliness of the rooms. - The room wasn't clean
The shower and the bedsheets were clean but everything else was dusty.
I appreciate that those two elements are probably the most important but it was like they just changed the sheets and cleaned the shower and left everything else.
The room definitely hadn't been hoovered or dusted.
The remote control was so dirty we didnt even want to touch it.
The floor in the bedroom of room 5 is grim - stained, filthy and needs replacing.
One of the towels was so thin it tore when we used it.
Generally everything except the bed felt really tired and dirty - water marks on all the bathroom surfaces, and bedside tables and generally just felt a bit gross. The staff who checked us in were nice - when we checked out no one asked about our stay so we didn't mention feedback onsite.
- Jane (9/5): Great place to stay - Friendly staff good food and excellent location. Sometimes a bit pricy.
- Duncan (8/5): An excellent short stay in this small historic city - Very friendly and helpful staff who made us feel welcome and valued
the room was excellent, glad to see Fair Trade products, including decaf tea and coffee bags
cooked breakfast was very good, We would have also enjoyed some fruit available as part of our breakfast we would have liked some fruit available as part of the otherwise excellent breakfast
- Michael (8/5): - Bed and pillows really comfortable one of the best we've come across. Window blind repeatedly fell down. Tea and coffee provided very poor in quantity and choice. Good breakfast bit pricey. Good location. Would definitely stay again. Our room was a small double but perfectly OK.
- Dennis (10/5): Excellent in comfort and style. We’re back again in October - The pub decor and vibe is above what you would expect from a pub.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was ample and delicious It’s is such a shame that with the new fire regulations which came in effect at the beginning of the year has meant that the comfort zones on the first and second floors no longer have seating.
This is not a reflection on the pub. It would seem that they had to remove them to comply
- James (9/5): A good short break - Location excellent food good and plentiful Stairs no lift
- Lindsay Troubridge (6/5): -
- Sue (5/5): Poor access and interrupted sleep. - The room was lovely, as was the bathroom. The bed was comfortable. Free (council) parking. The room faced the main road and was noisy from traffic and the pub opposite. Very little noise from the pub downstairs - until 11pm. For some reason, once the pub closed the young lady on duty turned up the music very loud which woke me up. Despite asking for it to be turned down it took several attempts for her to do this This ruined my nights sleep and the overall experience. Access from the Council run car park was awkward with bags, up several steps and then through the pub to more steps. The price was expensive for a noisy room only stay.
- Gary (9/5): Great location, food and staff - Great location
Lovely quiet and clean room (junior suite)
Beautiful breakfast Nothing to not like
- Evans (8/5): We'd stay at the Royal Standard again. Lovely, helpful staff, good food and a very comfortable room - The staff were really friendly and helpful. We ate dinner and breakfast at the Royal Standard and both meals were delicious and the ingredients really well sourced. Can't think of anything
- Michelle (7/5): - It’s nice n quirky Everything was nice but breakfast was dry
- Paul (7/5): Highly recommended hotel. - Excellent location, very polite staff! The room was smaller than expected however the bathroom was lovely and big.
- Andy (8/5): -
- Rebecca Penry (10/5): -
- Rachel (8/5): Great stay in a beautiful city. Loads to do and see - Lovely staff. Clean bedroom and spotless bathroom The bed was a little uncomfortable
- Bennett (9/5): -
- Beverley (5/5): Good location. Good breakfast. Parking became an irritant. - Parking facilities not clearly explained.
- Evi (9/5): - Delicious dinner
Excellent breakfast All was good
- Theodoros (10/5): -
- Lawrence (10/5): All staff charming and room very clean and warm and full of character. - Pretty and close to the city centre. Good management and friendly staff. I stayed on a cold wet day and the room was warm and welcoming.
- Matthew (8/5): - Very friendly welcome form the staff, quirky but very comfy and well appointed rooms, great cleanliness and good bathrooms. Breakfast was lovely nd a great selection of options to have
- Ann (3/5): -
- colin (6/5): pricey for what we got. - shower was decent. bed was uncomfortable for us. the room had lots of cobwebs and wasnt the cleanest. single pane glass to main road, so we heard and felt every car/lorry/truck go past. wardrobe door was broken so kept falling off hinges when we opened it.
- Robert (9/5): Very enjoyable one night stay - Well situated pub. Friendly staff. Convenient car parking at back of pub Low bed and shower not very powerful
- Gwaredd (8/5): - Great little hotel, super comfy bed and an enormous bathroom Pricey pints
- Michelle (8/5): Was lovely n l will book again when visiting Ely - Room was lovely decorated was nice to see couple of bottles of water. Breakfast was very tasty
- Ian (9/5): Perfect for a short stay in Ely. - The location is ideal and the room very comfortable.
- Mark (3/5): - Location near city centre Expensive food. and accommodation not valve for money.
- Rachel (8/5): A very nice place to stay right in the centre of the city - Checkin was easy, room was pretty and comfortable and it's an ideal location.
En suite was lovely and clean and everything seemed to work.
Would recommend for a night like we did.
The breakfast menu was very good and what I had (scrambled egg on sourdough with black pudding) very tasty.
Liked the water and the coffee bags in the room. It was a bit confusing as I thought breakfast was included but perhaps I missed something
Also the window in the room is clearly single-glazed - it looks pretty historic so maybe there's some restrictions but it does mean you can hear the road quite clearly.
- Louise (8/5): Overall happy that we received value for money. Would stay again. - The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Nice touches in the room with quality of tea and coffee and water provided daily. Parts of room and bathroom showing age.
- Cherilyn (10/5): -
- Wynne (9/5): - Had the kipper, was gorgeous.
- Hazel (8/5): Our stay at the Royal provided all we needed for our short three day visit to Ely - Good breakfast choice, good lunch, room good Would have liked the option of sandwiches in the evening as prefer main meal at midday.
- Fiona (10/5): - Lovely little pub. Beautiful little room.cosy and comfortable. Great location. Nothing to dislike
- Jackie (9/5): -
- Rob (8/5): We really enjoyed the stay in Ely. The staff were absolutely amazing, from start to finish. - The breakfast was fantastic on each of the three days that we stayed there. The staff were excellent, really friendly and helpful (one in particular of which unfortunately I cannot remember her name was outstanding- The tall blonde woman who the rugby player) The rooms (1 and 3) were a little tired and the windows were difficult to open. I think that the room needed a bit of a deep clean to be totally honest.
- Claire (6/5): Mediocre stay in well decorated rooms - Decor was very nice throughout the room and landing areas. Large room with separate seating area with good heating. Powerful shower water pressure Room we had was on the top floor in the eaves so one side of the bed was very difficult to get into due to the roof slope -bed could have easily been positioned better when completed to allow more space to that side.
No mirror accessible for hairdryer use and not ideal for makeup.
Breakfast was very slow- 20/25mins from ordering and only people there at the time. Disappointing there is no continental option at all only cooked options. Ingredients used were mediocre with the beans, black pudding and toast of poor quality for the price point.
Check out time of 10am is also something I have not come across before (or spotted at booking) yet Breakfast is served until 12 so seems extremely early!
Have stayed at many properties in Ely and do so frequently and we are very unlikely to return to this one.
- Nicola (9/5): -
- Stella (9/5): Perfect for our requirements- going to a concert in the Cathedral - City centre Noisy when the pub turned out at closing time
- Milwright (9/5): -
- Nigel (9/5): -
- Hayley (10/5): -
- paula (7/5): - Good size room, comfortable bed and all facilities -ie. Hospitality tray, iron , safe . Good size bathroom, with excellent shower and warm with large towel rail Lighting in bedroom quite dim, couldn't read at nighttime
- Melvin (10/5): Wonderful pub in the heart of Ely. - We visited Ely for the Christmas Market and decided to stay. The royal Standard is right in the town with the cathedral & shops just minutes away.
We arrived early and the staff said our room was ready so we could check in, the manager carried our bag to our room, which was stylish & comfortable.
The staff were very friendly, and super helpful, the food selection is large and good quality.
We highly recommend The Royal Standard and will return.
- Catherine (9/5): - Lovely period building, great bathroom. The range of freshly cooked breakfasts is amazing but not much choice if you prefer more of a continental breakfast.
- Christian (9/5): -
- Brian (8/5): -
- Deborah (10/5): -
- Julie (9/5): A beautiful pub - Full of character and ideally situated. Nothing about the property at all. The only downside to our stay were the waiting staff on our first night at dinner and breakfasts. No cutlery on both occasions and not particularly friendly. Not asked on check out how was our stay. However second dinner with different staff was exemplary.
- Ann (10/5): - Staff were amazing. Went all around the town trying to get an espresso martini only to find it where I started. Delicious, by the way. The room was comfortable. Breakfast was yummy. Nothing too much trouble. Even down to me not having my beans touching my eggs.
- Sandrine (8/5): -
- Shahnaz (7/5): Fine for a night but a bit cheerless. - Location was central. Bathroom had been recently redone and looked good. Bed was comfortable. Staff polite but not especially welcoming or enthusiastic. Breakfast very good. A bit old and tired. The bedroom window was broken and wouldn’t stay open. There were quite a few cobwebs in the room, especially around the windows. The big pub lantern outside shone through the bedroom window even with the blind down. The window is not double glazed so you can hear most things from the street. TV was a smart tv that hadn’t actually been set up to the network so it wasn’t possible to watch bbc iPlayer etc.
- Lynne (8/5): - Ideal location. Bathroom bit tired and lighting in room poor
- Susan (7/5): Average hotel in great location - Great location and very easy for parking. Bit grubby in places.
Ate in the restaurant, food average. No staff coming round to check all ok, had to keep going to find someone for more drinks, etc..
- James (9/5): - The location was great. Only able to stay one night due to illness, still a good time. Breakfast very nice. No lift but the staff helped with baggage.
- Dawn (7/5): Lovely place to stay to explore Ely but ask for a quiet room - Good location for exploring Ely.
Comfy bed.
Lovely staff.
Good food and drinks. The room we were in at the front of the property was very noisy.
The windows were beautiful, original leaded glass but didn’t shut well and every single noise from outside came into the room.
The room was also a bit on the small side with very limited wardrobe space.
However……we would definitely stay here again but ask for a quieter room.
- Patsy (7/5): -
- Carol (9/5): Value for money, great food and a place to stay in Ely - The breakfast was fabulous, one of the best vegetarian breakfasts I have ever had. The room was spacious and clean. Not allowing food in the room
- neil (10/5): Relaxing stay in a home from home environment - Lovely friendly staff
Great location with good parking facilities
Clean comfortable rooms
- Christopher (7/5): A brief overnight in a characterful pub, with friendly staff offering a quality service to guests. - The team are warm and accommodating, particularly when alerting about possibility of late arrival if flight into Stansted had been delayed. There is an apparently longstanding issue that booking.com sometimes reverts to quoting a contact telephone number (on the confirmation receipt) that is actually the number of a sister hotel in Ely. This can be disconcerting if phoning on it to talk to the Royal Standard team - just to alert you to the possibility!
- Robert (10/5): - Staff in the restaurant were very friendly
- martha (10/5): - Great central location. Easy walk to the cathedral and sites, shopping, eating. Super helpful staff. Nice recently remodeled bathroom.
- Carolyn (9/5): Lovely will stay again - Great location lovely room, pleasant staff
- Graham (9/5): - Nice comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. Good location in town centre. A few too many cobwebs around the windows!
- WILLIAM (9/5): -
- Gary (9/5): Enjoyable comfortable and friendly staff - Very good breakfast goid central location
- Emma (10/5): Really lovely stay. Would definitely recommend - Location was fab, staff were really friendly. Room was lovely, and the breakfast was amazing!
- Zachary (8/5): Pleasant for a stay in Ely - The location was about 15min away from the train station on foot and probably 10min or less away from pretty much anything in the city centre. The staff was without exceptiob friendly and helpful, the room was small but very well appointed. It's a lovely old building but despite the age has excellent ammenities. Good showe, sufficient outlets, good air-conditioning, and very good sound-proofing. I could occasionally hear noises from the street but never heard anything from the crowded pub the floor below. The breakfast was pleasant. The WiFi was a bit slow by my standards. The price was a bit high but that's something of general Britain problem.
- Jonathan (8/5): - Nice relaxed break and lovely room.
- JO-ANN (8/5): Pleasant stay in city centre accommodation. - Warm welcome, efficient quick check-in and shown to our room. Loved the old world air of the property, including the furniture in our room. Good breakfast included. Good base for exploring the town - easy walking distance to everything.
- Adrienne (7/5): -
- JOHN (6/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Patricia (9/5): Bringing you back in time, the traditional inn was overall a great place to stay and enjoy Ely. - Went to a concert in Sandringham and wanted an interesting place between London Stansted and Kings Lynn. The breakfast was sublime, many choices including classics and vegetarian (recommend pancakes and full English).
The room décor was fantastic, blending traditional and modern.
Restaurant area was very comfy and staff are amazing!
Fantastic shower and modern bathroom in general, fluffy towels and toiletries.
Fifteen minute walk from Ely train station to fore hill (up), another ten and you are at the heart of Ely and cathedral. Saturday market was a plus. From cathedral you can return to train station the other way (back hill) walking through a lovely park. The only thing was the noise at night as room faced busy road, the window did not fully close (beautiful lead glass style with iron clasp) and there was some noise and dust from the air conditioner. Given the furniture was black, the dust becomes more evident.
- chris (6/5): - Nice air conditioned room. But right at the top, with some tricky stairs to navigate. Bringing luggage down was done in stages.
No hairdryer in the room. Good breakfast with spicy black pudding. 10am checkout time seems harsh.
- Simon (8/5): -
- Lucy (8/5): -
- Dmitry (10/5): A cosy and comfortable stay at a great location. - The location is great - right in the center where all the restaurants and pubs are, close to the Ely cathedral. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The room was clean and sufficiently spacious, and there were all the expected amenities. Nothing really. The only nit is the old style keys, meaning we could only have one set.
- Julie (10/5): Little gem. - I walked into the shower door because I thought it was open, it was spotless. The room had a king size bed, quirky furnishing, like a silver monkey holding up the table top. Lots of interesting objects on the landing. We had the de luxe room with a fridge. The pub itself looked smart but we didn't eat there. The outside looks a bit shabby so inside was quite a surprise.
- Kerry (9/5): - The room was clean, comfortable and well-equipped.
- Josh (10/5): -
- Björn (8/5): -
- Anthea (8/5): A comfortable stay with helpful and understanding staff - Food was well cooked - especially the poached eggs
Good cooked range of breakfast items
Excellent helpful staff
Clean and comfortable accommodation No cereal choice at breakfast
- Doug (9/5): - Really nice greeting and an efficient check in.
Considering it was a pub the room and facilities were very good.
- julie (8/5): Very pleasant two day break. well recommended. - Breakfast was excellent, all staff were lovely. Nice comfy bed. Excellent location for town. Wrought iron bed frame , not really in keeping with the room. Room furniture a bit dated and awkward to open drawers and cupboards. Plug in bathroom basin didn't fit well and no overflow in basin. Could be a flooding issue. Lighting could be improved as room decor very dark. These are only minor observations, not criticisms.
- Mark (10/5): - Very friendly staff and great location
- Hannah (9/5): Excellent location and lovely room staff were lovely as well! - Very central
- Lynne (8/5): - On the Main Street so surrounded by shops. Some traffic noise but didn’t disturb us. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent. Generous portions, very hot and tasty. Would recommend..
Glad of the air con in our room as very hot week.
A shelf is needed in the bathroom which is spacious but nowhere to put your toiletries.
- Patricia (8/5): - Room was clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.
- Simon (9/5): -
- Marcia (10/5): A great place to stay - Really comfortable bed. Lovely bathroom Food was great and staff very helpful and accommodating The low ceiling in the front bar area made it difficult to hear so people spoke louder.
- Samantha (6/5): Great location for exploring Ely - The location of The Standard is great for visiting Ely and the local tourist attractions. There was a free car park at the back with heady access to the pub.
The rooms and decor are quite welcoming. The rooms are situated over a busy road so can be quite noisy when trying to sleep. I would not recommend based on this factor.
- Derek (10/5): A great find - The 2 day trip was a birthday present for my partner. She was delighted with the room, the modern shower facilities, the friendly, helpful staff, the excellent food (both evening meal and breakfast) and the location (just 5 minutes walk from the magnificent cathedral).
- Jeremy (7/5): It was ok for a night. - Good location friendly staff The window was fairly old and couldn’t shut it properly, so quite a bit of road noise as a consequence.
- David (9/5): Would definitely use and recommend. - Great location for the town and cathedral.
Free parking a bonus.
Breakfast was excellent and fresh cooked to order. As a listed building, obviously no lift.
