Guest Reviews
- Glynn (10/5): - No breakfast only dissapointment
- Andrew (10/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful
- Alan (8/5): - Close to my Desination but No Meals at Accomodation and Pub next Door was Expensive
- Owain (10/5): Excellent hotel - Although some of the decor maybe a little dated, this hotel is is excellent, large rooms, free parking, pub lunch next door at excellent prices. The staff are really nice and helpful.
- Paul (8/5): - Very easy to park and the staff are friendly and helpful. Facilities are comfortable but my only quibble is, despite No Smoking notices everywhere, there was a smell of stale smoke and the fire alarm was set off 4 times. Also i have stayed several times over the last 2 years and the lift is always out of order.
- Tracy (2/5): - When I got to my room there was no toilet roll or tea coffee & sugar. Thankfully took my own.
- Christopher (6/5): Budget Room - This is a basic hotel …… you get what you pay for ….. it is what is ….. bit dated ….and they need to get the lift working ….. 😄
- Barrie (10/5): - Clean basic hotel with friendly staff
- Davey (8/5): - No hot water in shower so had to be moved to another room that wasn’t as clean so a bit disappointed. Beds were comfortable and parking was easy.
- Maxine (4/5): - Staff were polite & attentive. Property was shabby lift wasn’t working. Carpets threadbare. Cigarette burn marks on carpet. Bed was squeaky & uncomfortable.Room was dingy poor lighting.
- Tracey (8/5): - Clean and good value for money
- Diane Joyce (6/5): - Firstly we would use the Hotel Again. It was adequate and priced reasonably.
Sadly during most of the night there was heavy traffic, which meant it was difficult to get to sleep.
- D.J.FINN (8/5): - Basic but very clean
- Ian (6/5): - Great hotel in terms of cleanliness and price. Location is great as a base for motorcycling around Northumberland and Durham areas. Great food next door. No breakfast facilities.
- Christopher (4/5): Is this a hotel or a half-way house? - I wish I’d read more reviews before booking this hotel, but we were limited for choice due to time constraints and having a dog with us.
Apparently the lift hasn’t worked for years - and we were given a room on the third floor. The window of our room only opened a crack, barely letting in any (badly needed) fresh air. The room was very tired and the carpet badly stained.
Whoever had painted the bathroom had glossed over the doorframe AND the tiles. It looked like a blind man had been tasked with the job and then not given enough time to complete it.
The hot water in the bathroom was just about tepid if you let it run for long enough.
Some of the hotel residents seem to be living there permanently, and we saw at least two women hanging around the lobby in their pyjamas/dressing gowns in the middle of the afternoon. We went to the pub next door for an evening meal. When we came back a woman was standing outside the hotel having a heated argument on her phone. When my husband went out 2 hours later to walk the dog she was till there, sobbing into her mobile. On the morning we left two staff were frantically knocking on someone’s door and asking if they were ok.
Is this a hotel or a half-way house?
I woke up on the middle of the night and the smell of tobacco smoke was so strong in our room that I had to check the hallways to ensure there was no fire.
On the plus side, the staff were lovely and very helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very pleasant staff very relaxed no prob at all .
- David (2/5): - Worst place we’ve ever stayed. Tatty, dated, very rough, poorly cleaned, poorly decorated, generally very low quality hotel. Rock hard bed, would have been more comfy on the floor, if the floor was hygienically safe to do so! Room on the top floor and lift permanently out of order and blocked off - difficult for wife with spinal injury. Recommend you avoid this place until they invest some money in it.
- Anne (8/5): - The lift didn't work and as I was on crutches the staff moved me from the 3rd floor to the 1st, the room had a stale smell of cigarettes but we only wanted it as a stop off for the pink concert at Sunderland so it was well worth it, also the pub/ restaurant next door is great for an evening meal
- Colin (2/5): Awful - Avoid this hotel - The room was clean l, spacious and comfy, but at 01.20am my room was entered by a foreign woman presumably wanting to steal my wallet, car keys etc. Fortunately I woke and was able to evict her. She didn't appear to speak English.
The hotel is on a busy main road and despite secondary glazing was extremely noisy from road traffic until late and again from 06.00.
Speaking to locals after checking out after 1 night of what was meant to be a 3 night stay, the hotel has a dreadful reputation and is believed to be used to house recently released prisoners and police are in regular attendance to disturbances.
- John (10/5): - Clean hotel, comfortable bed.. no complaints
- J (6/5): - The non smoking room smelled of smoke. The room was distinctly run down.
- Stephen (6/5): - Old fashioned rooms but clean . Also not cold compared to some guest houses who aren’t putting there heating on . Radiator on demand if required . Pub grub next door to it .
- andrew (8/5): Andy Lynch - Our stay was great had all we needed for one night to continue driving North the next day. It was not the Ritz it was what you would expect to pay for a two - Three star ACCOMMODATION had a good meal in the pub next door I had a good sleep my wife got sea sick on her twin bed, shower did not work room (# 007) and had to have breakfast at Morrisons up the road, fantastic so all in all it was worth £48 am returning in 6 days so we’ll see if the shower is fixed !!!
- Marion (8/5): - No frills room, but clean with comfortable beds and a hot shower
- lynne (6/5): - It was adequate only used for sleeping disappointed no shower gels/shampoo in bathrooms
- Lee (8/5): - Very comfortable bed..excellent value for money..lovely big car park
- Jeyarajah (8/5): - Friendly staff
- Peter (4/5): - Shabby, lift out of order , dubious clientele.
Insufficient hot water. Noisy bathroom fan . Dirty windows spiders web in window etc....
- Maureen (6/5): - Couldn’t shut Door plus sink didn’t empty
- Zoe (10/5): Comfortable stay - Have stayed a number of times, always had a comfortable stay.
- Rob (8/5): Spotless - Two night stay - spotlessly clean lodge, very comfy bed - cracking value for money
- Lee (10/5): - Lovely quiet hotel..very nice clean room..excellent parking facilities for my van and trailer..will definitely stay there again
- Stephen (8/5): - Basic & ragged round the edges, but functional, clean, very comfortable, excellent staff and very well priced - what's not to like...?
- Keith Campbell (6/5): Great value, clean and comfortable - A bit dated but spotlessly clean, comfortable bed and pillows, it was perfect for our 2 overnight stays while visiting the Croft motor racing circuit. Very could value for money.
- Helen (8/5): - We were visiting friends and just needed a room locally. This hotel was great. It's not new and fancy but was clean and had onsite parking.
- Lorraine (8/5): Quiet and comfortable nights sleep - Very quiet and comfortable. Clean but a bit dated . But you get get a good nights sleep . Very pleased
- eric (10/5): Good value hotel - Very helpful and friendly staff . Very basic hotel but good value for money. No shower gel or shampoo provided (just 1 small bar of soap) and no morning breakfast available (even from pub next door). Not a big problem but would have been good to know in advance.
- Zoe (10/5): Great value for money - Booked a room with a double bed for my daughter and myself for a night stay, only to find TWO double beds!! For the price we paid it was amazing value for money. Comfortable and relaxing. Would definitely use again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Rough. Cheap but rough - Broken heater jammed on full all night and loud TV all night in first room/first night. Beds rock hard. 2nd room/2nd night mattress squeaking with every movement. Breakfast menu in room but advised no breakfast due to covid only when I asked what time its served
- Christopher (8/5): Value for money and same price every night ! - Good comfortable hotel !!! Could do with an update and the lift fixing or replacing but good value for money !! I was there for two weeks waiting to get into my flat and no problems at all
- Richard (6/5): - The room was tidy, a good size and well-equipped. The en suite had a bath which was handy. I paid by American Express when I arrived, then was told the next day that they don’t take it so they had to refund me and take the payment by an alternative method. Both mornings I was there, an alarm went off quite early (I happened to be up both times but it still wasn’t ideal).
- Sharon (6/5): Excellent value, friendly and overall cannot fault - Not a bad little hotel at all. Excellent value. Free parking and very friendly and helpful staff. Good quality linens and comfortable bed.
- Sarah (10/5): 10/10 - Again a fantastic stay very friendly, we had a warm welcome from staff on our arrival will be booking again for next week
- Jason (6/5): Tired but cheap - This hotel is adequate at best, it looks dated/tired and the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. If you are expecting the same standards you get at a pre-booked Premier Inn for the same price you will be let down.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The bathroom was disgusting mould around the bath dirt everywhere soo outdated
- Vera (10/5): - Was quiet and inobtrusive staff were very kind and wellcoming
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Hotel stinks of smoke. If you are a smoker you will be fine with this hotel as it is perfectly fine for the money apart from that. I couldn't bear it and the staff helpfully let me try several rooms before giving me a refund as they all stank. It is a mixture of fresh smoke from people smoking in rooms and stale smoke emanating from the carpets and upholstery which made me feel sick.
- Dennis (8/5): - Being a pensioner, had trouble getting up to the third floor as the lift was out of order?
No breakfast due to COVID restrictions.
Otherwise, tv bed shower etc all good,
- Fld14 (8/5): - The staff were extremely helpful which was much appreciated.
- Nicole (8/5): - Lovely staff , rooms very dated but for the cost we had a lovely stay.
My little dog was well accomodated and welcomed, and the staff went out of their way to make it a good stay.
- Valerie (8/5): - We have stayed there on numerous times. This time the room they gave us smelt of smoke .
- Wynne (8/5): - Clean and comfortable 👍
- Verified traveler (8/5): 1 Nighter - The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The shower cubicle was large and the shower power very good.
Once I had worked out how to lock the room door using the door knob(no credit card to open) everything was fine
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Cheap and cheerful - needs a bit more attention to detail. No spoon for tea as an example.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Staff service was excellent unfortunately condition of rooms and bathroom is absolutely appalling, this hotel needs gutted from top to bottom, it needs a complete fefit as it is time warped in the mid twentieth century.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Decor very dated and although room clean windows mouldy. Can hear busy road outside.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Convenient location for the event we were going to on the Saturday evening and a great breakfast in the White Horse on the Sunday morning.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Avoid this hotel - bathroom was too dirty to use
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean and tidy, basic but good value. Didn't work out how to get a TV remote but wasn't too bothered.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - If you’re just ok with a simple room to shower and sleep it’s fine.
The room was clean but there was a lot of mould in the bathroom. I had a twin room as I was on my own and for the amount I paid it was perfectly fine but I imagine some others would not find this an adequate stay.
There is a pub next door which was great so I spent most of my evening in there.
- Janet (6/5): - We chose this hotel because it was really inexpensive and we were just needed a place to sleep then moving on. I'm giving it a 3 star rating because it was such a good price. The bathroom was clean, but the bed was not comfortable, very old carpet and the hotel in general is very old. But, it was safe, quiet, and the front clerk was very friendly and brought us up shampoo that he happened to have at the desk since that isn't provided at this hotel. Overall, just an inexpensive place to sleep.
- Colin (8/5): - Good hotel & service
- Joanne (2/5): Wouldn't let my dog stay here! - This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in.
On arrival the receptionist was more interested on the Star Wars film that he was watching on the reception TV. I had requested a ground floor room but was up two flights, lift not working and absolutely no offer to help me with bags etc. When I got to the room, it stank even though the window was open. The drawers had good rubbish in them from previous occupants. The bathroom was disgusting with blackened grout, side panel of bath broken, disgusting shower curtain. Later in the evening when I had bee next door to the pub to eat, I had taken my dog out for a walk and went to go through the reception back to my room to be confronted with a man and a woman in their underwear kicking 9 bells out of each other, obviously under the influence of something. The guy at reception was still watching TV while half heartedly ringing the police. He didn't come out to warn me whether or not I should come through the reception or not. I eventually got back to my room, slept on top of the bed covers, given how dirty the rest of the room was, I wasn't chancing it.
I was told the hotel was cheap, OK and dog friendly. It was a dirty hovel that isn't good enough for my dogs to stay in. I was booked in for this coming week. That booking is well and truly cancelled. Beggars belief how they get away with having guests and haven't been shutdown.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Upgrade needed - The hotel is in need of an upgrade. There was an unpleasant smell in the room & the bathroom needed a deep clean. We didn't have a bath or shower for this reason. On the plus side the bedding was clean & it was quiet.
- Graham (8/5): - Not a four star hotel but a very good value place to stay in a good area. The staff are very friendly and professional. Whilst there is no official restaurant next door to the hotel is a large public house which serves good, reasonably priced meals and drinks throughout the day from breakfast till late evening.
- Simon (8/5): Ok for a nights rest. - Having worked here once upon a time, I knew what to expect. The Lodge is good for a cheap place to rest your head for the night, and with a pub next door it’s good for lunch or dinner. That the Lodge no longer serves even cheap continental breakfasts was disappointing, and the lift is still out of order. The rooms were clean and comfortable (receptionist made a mistake on my first night and put me in the wrong room, so I had to change the next day), and the bathrooms were ok. Slight peeling of wallpaper borders in the rooms, and there were black mouldy marks on the tiles around the bath. There was something wrong with the TV in my second room too. Had to retune it every time I turned it on, as it kept deleting the TV channels and unless I retuned it, it only had radio channels. Once retuning had done after a few minutes, it was ok. Just a bit of a pain I had to do this every time I wanted to watch telly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location. Pub next door amazing veggies &vegan menu
- Verified traveler (8/5): - overall was nice place for the price we paid
bed was comfy
- James (10/5): - Large spacious double bed room, bed very comfatable, room needs updating a little, but i enjoyed the stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Regular visitor - My third stay at Harrowgate Hill, central destination works well for me. Weather was very hot so I was pleased when a fan was automatically put in my room. Very thoughtful.
- Diane (8/5): A quick overnight stop - We only stayed one night, I mainly chose this hotel for the cheap price because we only needed a place to sleep before travelling on. It was easy to find, had plenty of free parking, the room was comfortable and the staff were helpful. We had breakfast at the White Horse pub next door which was good, I would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Only stayed for one night so was fine for what we wanted. Overall the building and rooms are very tired.
- David (2/5): You get what you pay for - Poor location and smelled
- Wayne (10/5): - Rooms need updating
- Verified traveler (8/5): Dated rooms but very comfy and friendly staff - Friendly staff and very comfy beds. Dated rooms but for the price you can’t go wrong.
Cheap room and the pub next door is cheap for a drink and breakfast.
- Mick (4/5): - Very tired hotel.
The room we were in had holes in the bathroom wall and stains in the grouting.
The room looked out onto the smoking area of the adjoining hotel - highly enjoyable.
The noise from both inside and outside tbe room wasn't ideal.
It just looks like it's waiting for travelodge or premier inn to buy it and give it a much much much needed makeover.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff. Clean. Great Location. Good Value for money for a basic hotel.
