Guest Reviews
- Dan (4/5): Poor hotel, very old everything and furniture damaged, dirty carpets, poor breakfast. - Close to port Furniture damaged, hotel very old and not update for ages, breakfast serve to table so every day same small breakfast. No value for money we pay.
- Katrina (8/5): -
- Mohammed (2/5): -
- Lisa (5/5): Basic hotel geared towards Bus Trip holidays - The hotel was dated and mainly devoted to bus trip guests. We were not given any information relating to meals such as breakfast or evening meal and as these were not offered, we didn’t feel welcome as booking.com guests.
We were misinformed of pool opening times and this led to our sons missing out on the pool. The room was basic with zero internet access- not great when travelling with teens.
Poorly positioned soap dispenser in bathroom which led to an uncomfortable showering experience, due to obstruction and irritating shower curtain.
We wouldn’t stay here again due to the above as it was not suitable for our requirements.
- Jayne (9/5): We had a lovely large clean room. Comfortable bed and quiet room. - Breakfast was adequate for us. It was nice that tea and coffee pots were already on the table. The times were short and would prefer a bit longer. Breakfast times were short.
- Berry (8/5): -
- Lucian (9/5): Very comfortable and pleasant - The staff were just lovely and up for a chat and made me feel very comfortable. They provided such excellent hospitality. The room itself was also excellent and was the perfect comfy place to crash after night of raving. Trying to fill up the kettle and water bottles with a cup on account of such a short sink, but that's infrastructure and you can't do anything about that.
- Tessa (5/5): - You pay for what you get. Staff were nice. Rooms were average Fire drill at 2:30am with a young child who was petrified. No explanation was given. Not a great first visit
- Raymond (8/5): -
- Nelson & lonel (5/5): -
- Marc (10/5): Great stay at Devonshire Hotel. - Had a great stay at this hotel. Parking was easy and I was greeted by a friendly member of staff at reception. My room was clean and tidy and contained everything I required. I'd definitely stay here again when I'm back in the area.

- Helen (10/5): Excellent stay and we will be returning next summer! - The hotel was spacious, with very large bedrooms, which was excellent for a family travelling together. The outside pool was also a huge bonus.
- Tash (10/5): -
- John (9/5): Nice hotel with own pool - All what you need for a break in Torquay. Spacious room just some minutes walk away from downtown. However, keep in mind that it's uphill when coming back. Very good breakfast. Outdoor pool and on-site private parking. Very helpful staff. Just 5min on foot from sailing club.
- Jochen (8/5): - Large & comfortable family room with newly renovated bathroom. Well maintained outdoor pool including sun beds. Hotel is well located to explore Torquay and the surrounding. Nice building.
- Rupert (10/5): -
- inamul (5/5): - Parking Too many old people giving you dirty looks. I suppose they don't see many Asians where they live. Those facial expressions were either out of curiosity or just being instrincly racist. To be honest I felt telling a few of them to go back to where they come from. Just kidding.
- Keith (10/5): -
- Mark (9/5): - Staff greeted us with a smile and good humour.
Very clean room.
Excellent areas to relax.
Nice sized bar area cheerful staff.
Entertainment provided in the evening. Not anything that we didn't like but some areas looked slight worn such as carpets in heavily used area's but still clean.

- Anita (9/5): - The staff was nice, kids loved the swimming pool, the water there was warm.
The gaming room is ok, but it can be better renewed, then it will be better for families,we enjoyed it.
- David (10/5): A very enjoyable stay -
- Ahmed (9/5): - Exxcellant location, very niece staff and good size room
- Krystian (10/5): -
- Gaby (6/5): - To get to the property by foot the incline is steep. Buses are only one an hour to and from the hotel to take you into the town however once in the town plenty of buses in the town to take you to Paignton, cockington village, Brixham etc.
We had a family room, spacious but very outdated. Some facilities need replacing i.e single bed, rocking and squeeking. Gets very warm in the room but reception had plenty of fans. Pool was lovely, our youngest loved it.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Obliging to keep our luggage too for checking in and out.
There is entertainment on an evening but we didnt use it.
- Muhammad (4/5): - Its said on the website Devonshire hotel but we stayed at Devonshire Lodge which is behind the hotel and it's quite inconvenient to go past the dining area. No lift is difficult to carry the luggage
- Verified traveler (4/5): Very run down - While the person who checked us in was very nice, the hotel was awful. It is so run down that furniture was fraying and stained. The carpets were old and stained. Marks on the wall, damaged corners, peeling paint and the room smelled of mildew. Everything was run down. The dining area looked like a cafeteria in a run down nursing home with bad cruise ship entertainment every night. While the pool was spotless, nothing else was. Not a nice place to stay.
- Howes (9/5): Great get away - Good size room
Staff very friendly and helpful
The location was great
Evening entertainment was good
Price to add dinner breakfast was good
Prices in bar was good This isn't a dislike, but what we thought would make it better- extra plug socket for the room
- Saleem (4/5): nice location - nice location friendly staff nice room not much choice on breakfast basic. couldn't sleep from 9pm to 11pm playing live music and disco very load i had been work all day wanting peace and quiet not on holiday the staff at reception didn't inform me of this live music and disco played at the hotel 7 days a week no ear plugs in the room supplied sent email and message to hotel no response very poor commuincation. if i had knowen would have not booked this hotel yes play live load music on friday and weekeds only not on a weekday not everyone is on holiday i had to work at Torbay Hospital next day was tired due to lack of sleep from the noise from the hotel!!!
- Paul (7/5): -
- Kris (10/5): - Staff all super friendly and kind.
- Bryn (10/5): - Great property, location and staff. Customer service exceeded expectations
- Marguerite E Baldwin (8/5): - Very nice hotel. Enjoyed our stay here.
- Dawn (5/5): Room was comfortable and clean but too many stairs - Clean plenty of paint Too many stairs x advertising a pool doesn’t have one x no hairdryer in room
- Nuthiangpuii (4/5): - READ THIS FULLY FIRST! before you book the hotel through any agency ( hotels.com/ expedia etc) please confirm with the hotels of your booking specially any extras like breakfast! We had a very disappointing experiences sadly!
I booked through hotels.com . On the booking site THERE'S NOTHING MENTION ABOUT DINNER NEEDS TO BOOK IN ADVANCED! me n 2 daughters sat down for dinner ( like other normal restaurants) thinking that we will order food and pay the bills as normal.Approached by waiter that all meals need to order prior he asked me to talk to the reception which i did n she says the same that they cant provide any meals ( which i understand) ( receptionist could be bit nicer)we left the table n find other restaurants (my girls were very embarrassed)
I wasn't because its not our fault!
In the morning . Because of this incident i double check with reception for breakfast (included n paid in my booking) to my horror . He says that my booking was 'room only' fortunately i have the prove of my booking thats says . " breakfasts included " so he rushly arranged our breakfasts ( thank you to this reception) .
All these issue clearly stated NO COMMUNICATION in between this two and make the guest very confused!
Also on agencysite it says ' indoor pool' main reasons i booked and again found out only outdoor pool
Because this hotel is a chain their other hotel has got indoor pool ( looks like hotels.com wrapped all in one) !
Very disappointed yet again with hotels.com!
- Maryna (10/5): A great hotel with impeccable service - The very first positive impression was the receptionist at the front desk, because she was smiling and pleasing. The rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, which creates a feeling of comfort. And the most important thing for me was the cleanliness of the room, which was felt immediately after opening the door to the room. The smell of clean bed linen and towels was very pleasant. And also the comfortable beds, which were a lifesaver after our long journey. I was a little disappointed with the toast at the morning traditional English breakfast because there was only one piece of bread and it was too small. Also, the coffee could have been a little better. But the service was great and they even brought us soya milk at our request
- Arkadiusz (8/5): Overall good. - Big room, comfy bed, kettle with tea and coffee. Liitle bit old
- Hannah (1/5): Poor - Not alot The whole place needs refurbishment. Not clean at all . We ended up not staying and going somewhere else.
- Charmaine (7/5): -
- Hekuran (8/5): - Staff was very helpful Walking up to my room
No lifts
- Magic (8/5): - We booked our stay last minute after getting washed out of our tent in a storm! Nelson let us check in as soon as we had booked which was a huge blessing. The staff are all really really friendly and welcoming. We had a great few days stay and enjoyed the fab singer on the Sunday night in the bar Only suggestion would be putting a bell in the reception area for when guests arrive to retrieve their room keys.
Also the loo roll holder on the back of the bathroom door made the room hard to access.
- Popovici (3/5): -
- Julie (6/5): Location. - Less than 10 minutes walk to the harbour etc. suitable for overnight as booked in the last minute. My room was 65, family room outdated room but as long as it’s clean (except for the inside sided mirror wardrobe). Good size room for 4 people. Bathroom needs updating as the bath tub was too narrow, dangerous when stand up for shower, especially for elder people!
There is a black mould on the wall inside the sides mirror wardrobe that’s needed attention.
- Chantelle (6/5): Would never book again, just not worth the money, £30 per room it should have been. - I liked the entertainment rooms. I didn’t like the rooms, they were dirty, the bathrooms were disgustingly dirty.. my son found a dead moth in his bed he was supposed to sleep in. The rooms were just not clean and for that amount of money I expected the rooms to be very clean and inviting but I just couldn’t wait to leave and have a shower elsewhere.
- Alan (8/5): -
- Marilyn (10/5): Devonshire Hotel. Just what we needed. - Loved the location. Loved that it was close to sea and local attractions. It was easy to find when exploring due to the landmarks such as the Ferris wheel and conservation area on beach which could be seen from a distance. Lovely coastal walks nearby. The room we had was very good and beds organised perfectly so everyone had a good night sleep. The mattress was comfy. There were 4 beds so we all had a bed each. There was a small beer garden round the back which the kids could play but no equiptment. A hill they could roll down and a tree they could climb. The swimming pool looked nice but everytime we couldn't use it in the morn or afternoon when we were ready to as it was covered till a time. Not sure if this is everyday or just incidental when we walked past or to do with weather. All in all and extremely pleasant stay. Would not fault the place as the staff and facilities were very good and clean. The staff knocked on the door to see if we needed anything. I asked for more towels and some milk and if I could use the vacuum cleaner. He was very polite and kind and left the vac for me outside the door after he had fin with the stairs and brought me towels and milk. There was a little theatre next to the side of the back of the building which we went to watch a play which kids loved too. Would stay again. Breakfast was between 8.30 and 9 am. When we came down at 8.20 there was only 2 tiny tables which we were told to put together but was no room to do so as they were by the door entrance causing an obstruction. They didn't have kids price breakfast and was nearly charged same as adult for 2 kids. He then charged me for one adult and split the breakfast between 2 small kids after I told him I wasn't eating. There were mainly older people there and the entertainment was aimed for them which was fine because we went out and did our own thing. The extractor fan was not working in the toilet and there was no way to get netflix on dispite having wifi ir connecting your phone. There was no code to put in the telly but there was freeview. The window didn't close properly but we liked the room and I am a light sleeper so if anyone came in I'd hear it. Would not hear it if I was out though but we took all our valuables when out. I was told that the TVs were not smart but they were as had utube and netflix apps. Could have had a code for guests. Would of been handy on the evening to wind down or useful when washing up or taking a shower so kids would be entertained for a bit as parents got things done and ready and nagged at to put a cartoon on. Luckily we brought some toys and drawing books. There needs to be a sign to where the black bags go. These were minor things.
- Jason (4/5): -
- Darren (7/5): -
- Adam (8/5): -
- Brendan (4/5): It was just a stopover and we were only there for 12 hours. I am always reluctant to criticise but it is difficult to th - Not very much. It was probably quite nice back in the day but it is what it is today. We were despatched to “the lodge” by the receptionist, which was a short drive down the road. The lodge bore no resemblance to the images we had seen. It wasn’t very pleasant. Extremely dated.
- Snooker431 (8/5): Did not realise it was used for coach trips - It was what I expected for the price.
Basic clean room. When I book an hotel I like three things.
Free parking, good wi-fi and a swimming pool. The wi-fi did not work in my room.
When I went to leave in the morning my car was blocked in by coaches and there was no driver available to move one a fraction so I could get my car out.
- Sarah (2/5): - I booked this hotel because they were the only property in the area with a triple room for 3 adults (or so Expedia claimed). I was traveling with my elderly grandparents, so we needed to be together in a room because I was their caretaker for the trip. There was no communication from Devonshire Hotel prior to our arrival, so I assumed everything was fine. When we arrived, the reception told us that there was a mysterious “problem with our booking” and that we could not have a triple room - they could only do 2 rooms on 2 separate floors, one double room and one with two single beds. There was nowhere else in the area that we could book so last minute, so we had to agree, but it was EXTREMELY inconvenient and frankly DANGEROUS for my grandparents. The double room on the ground floor is poorly kept and has 3 stairs down to the bed, so I was up all night worrying that they would trip down the stairs during the night on the way to/from the bathroom. Super weird bedroom setup. The hotel rooms were also not in the main building, they were in the lodge out back which involved a 5 minute walk with many stairs to get from the car and dining to the room. Also, the reception would not honor the breakfast we had paid for with Expedia until I spent an hour communicating with Expedia - Expedia had to phone the reception to argue with them. And after all of this inconvenience, nobody had the grace to offer us a refund or any kind of apology. Disappointed.
- Peter (10/5): - Liked everything, only problem was with expedia. Paid for breakfast, but hotel didn't have record of it. Luckily I envisaged something like this, so had printed the very difficult to find in the emails confirmation of having paid for it..
- Habib (9/5): Very pleasant - Beautiful location and very spacious rooms Nothing
- Mariette Hambly (8/5): -
- Louise (5/5): It was a good location and served us as place to stay - It was in a good location. Staff appeared friendly
They had evening entertainment which is nice.
I guess out of season so extras like games room being used as a store cupboard which was disappointing for us.
Good parking facilities
Room large
Unfortunately this was not the holiday we had planned and booked last minute so not sure we would of booked here in normal circumstances so feedback hard as sadly we were not particularly impressed if being honest but again not our typical choice of hotel. Booked that evening after a holiday cottage had been double booked so it was a desperately attempt to salvage a holiday.
I think if you did the coach holiday packages I'm sure you would have a better experience than us all the other guest appeared very happy. I think just not suited to us is all. We got separated in to two rooms
Room not very clean possibly as last minute booking
But just looked like beds had new linen and the rest of the rest of the room and bathroom had been forgotten
General smell of hotel not great either unfortunately and far to hot.
- Aaron (8/5): Top marks all round. - Beautiful period property.
The staff were excellent at their jobs and very friendly. A little rough around the edges but no real complaints.
- Tracy (8/5): Had a good time, staff helpful and friendly, was clean and tidy...got what I paid for... - Food was good, enjoyed the evening entertainment... very clean, beds were comfy Was a bit of a trek to town, also was a bit complicated to get to our room.... not much to do in the daytime. .
- Richard (7/5): -
- Trevor (9/5): - Comfortable beds. Friendly staff. Location Close to town. Little bit dated, but in a quirky nice way
- Tomasz (6/5): -
- Papworth (4/5): - When I book this appointment. It said that the place had a lift to floors.
The One we had you had to go down some stairs then more stairs then after all that we were faced with even more staircase to the door where we were staying. It ruined my compleat holiday for the rest of the week.
Never again Stopping there.
My muscles (calf's) were killing me all week after that experience All above
- James (6/5): -
- Richard (8/5): It was worth the money - Location One socket in the family room
- Anna (8/5): - Great price and location. Spacious room and comfy beds. Swimming pool was a nice addition
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Sam (2/5): Awful, never again would we return!! - Location The room had black mould over the bathroom ceiling, the small table in the room had a broken leg, the towels were stained and ripped, the ‘wardrobe’ was 2 doors screwed to wooden batons on the wall, the staff were not welcoming, rude and unprofessional. A waiter told 2 ladies to stick out their elbows as we passed them to knock us out the way, apparently that’s what the waiters do to get people out their way, one of us is 72 years of age.
What I can presume was the maintenance man tried to enter our room with a key one morning to fix a broken tv, while we were in bed, we hadn’t reported a broken TV as our TV was working, trying to explain this he walked away muttering under his breath. The staff only seemed bothered about guests that had arrived on a coach and other guests didn’t matter. This trip was booked for a special occasion and it tarnished what should have been a special time.
- Stacey (10/5): -
- Price (9/5): - Have stayed here several times good value for money and friendly staff Stayed 6 nights in total and changed bedding on last day which did
not seem to make sense
- gaynor (10/5): Devonshire hotel - Rooms spacious, very comfortable bed and staff friendly
- Scott (10/5): -
- neil (10/5): fantastic - accepted our booking at 10.45pm after the Trecarn hotel refused us entry as we didn’t have photo I.D! staff on duty were polite, friendly & just fantastic. we are so grateful to them!
- teekaygee (7/5): Good facilities. - Close to centre. Off street parking. Friendly checkin staff. No information given by waiter as to procedure for ordering breakfast. He did not explain that everything had to be ordered at once.
- Samantha (7/5): -
- margaret (9/5): - The staff were excellent and the grounds were lovely The hotel was a bit dated but clean
- Paul (10/5): - Welcome
- Jayne (10/5): Lovely stay - Very friendly welcome and staff are very thoughtful,, eg remember preferences for breakfast etc
- Vivien (10/5): Lovely! - Could not fault anything and would recommend.
- Pabs (10/5): - Such lovely and helpful staff! 10/10!!
- Alan (8/5): Very clean and customer friendly - Our 2 night stay at the Devonshire Hotel was very satisfactory and we found the facilities really clean and comfortable
- Yvonne (8/5): Breo - The staff very friendly and helpful but the bed was very uncomfortable
- Caroline (10/5): - The Devonshire is a lovey s
- Steven (10/5): nice clean hotel - the location was the only negative for me.a walk up a hill from the bay area.but all the plusses made up for it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - No hairdryer in room
- Susan (10/5): Lovely hotel - Very comfortable hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Could do with updating
- A (8/5): Nice few days away - Nice few days at the Devonshire, decent location, 10 to 15 mins walk downhill to the harbour and good location to base yourself for visiting the wider Torquay region. Its a coaching inn with predominantly older generation staying on an organised coach holiday. Entertainment in the evening catering mainly for the coach guests. Stayed in the lodge at the back which was clean and comfortable beds with newish decor and fresh coat of paint. Staff were friendly and helpful, cant complain really... (although curtain in room could have been slightly longer so not as bright in the morning)
- Dean (6/5): - It was mainly for the older generation and the hotel needed maintenance and upgraded.
- Gary (6/5): Weekend stay. - No hot food available on arrival. Had to carry our case up to our room myself. Hotel was very dated but was all clean. Breakfast was disappointing. Staff were friendly.
