Guest Reviews
- Fiona M Laverty (9/5): Lovely stay in a friendly place - The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. The food is absolutely wonderful. Breakfast plentiful and good menu choices. All served with a friendly smile. Booking for dinner is a must. The room was clean and very comfortable, but the bathroom, especially the sink, is small. However, it does make the best use of the space available.
- Julie (10/5): -
- STEFANO (8/5): -
- christine (10/5): Very enjoyable stay in a lovely location - Beautiful location, comfortable and great food
- Edward (6/5): Ok, food good - The food was nice Room was small tv very small mould around the window. Hotel needs some TLC
- Patrycja (10/5): -
- James (10/5): Fantastic as always - The best seafood in the restaurant ever. Been twice before and never let us down!
- Ilaria (8/5): -
- Saara (10/5): Fishing village dream - Right by the sea, delicious dinner in the pub. Lively fishing village atmosphere. Rooms were a bit small with three suitcases, but we managed fine.
- Aileen (10/5): A great hotel in a great location that punches above its weight in every way. - A lovely hotel with a great atmosphere in a picturesque coastal village. The staff are helpful and friendly and we had everything we could possibly need during our stay. The restaurant serves wonderful food, and, in particular is a paradise for those who like seafood, with a fabulous selection to choose from. Nothing.
- DAVID (9/5): Stay here! - Room was clean and comfy.
Food was excellent, both evening and breakfast.
Lovely staff.
This place is definitely at the top of my list when in the Aberdeen area. Nothing!
- Cate (10/5): -
- Claire (10/5): - Clean room, friendly staff, lovely pub & restaurant with good food and desserts. The room was quite small but comfortable. Not much else to do in the area.
- Robert (10/5): Perfect for couples, food is great and perfect location - The stay was brilliant, very clean, comfortable, and cozy, staff are helpful and friendly, location is just amazing with plenty of views and great locations to visit, food was amazing and fresh, 10/10 would recommend and will definitely stay again. Bit cold in Johnshaven, but definitely worth it
- huey (10/5): - the staff and the location rooms was really clean
- Heather (8/5): Lovely Seaside Inn - Nice upstairs room in older seaside inn. Lovely location. Great food and atmosphere in bar/ restaurant. Breakfast was exceptional with great cooked options. Made to feel welcome by all staff especially the cook at breakfast. Nothing really. Maybe handbasin in bathroom could be enlarged as quite small.
- Cocci29 (8/5): Cosy - Endroit calme, chambre confortable
- emma (6/5): - The Bar / restaurant downstairs was oviously very popular .dinner was good
The staff were accomodating and pleasant Room was okay but bathroom not enough space
Heating was a portable radiator
The room wall partition too thin that you can hear every movement next door .
- Dan Morgan (5/5): Not great - Food was good Was in the apartment and it was quite unclean with a toaster I wouldn't make toast for my worst enemy
- Brian (10/5): -
- Margaret (10/5): Excellent stay! - Excellent value for money in this pub with rooms in a friendly traditional fishing village.
- Jessica (9/5): - Great hotel and pub in a charming seaside village. Staff were super nice, room was clean and spacious. We had a great time!
- Gregory (8/5): -
- Clare (10/5): - Friendly and helpful staff and excellent food Having to leave
Cisza i spokój.
- Denise (8/5): Excellent overnight stay. Super staff, fabulous food. - Staff, ambience and food. Tiny sink in ensuite.
- Steven (10/5): -
- RONALD (10/5): Great food in a relaxed bar atmosphere beside the picturesque harbour. - Fantastic food is the reason we keep returning. Good atmosphere in the bar and lovely staff. If you like fish and seafood a visit to The Anchor is a must. Nothing.
- Mitchell (10/5): A place where the unexpected happens - The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone was playing a new Scottish song
Scotland the Free sung by a young lass Eden Power
Seemingly the writer had stayed there the night previously and it was on U Tube The food was far too good and that was the chef Gary’s fault
- Andrew (8/5): Very good value. Very hospitable . Would stop again. - Very traditional pub
- B (8/5): Close to harbour - Location is fantastic, right by the harbour The commercial level emergency exit light by the door lights up the entire bedroom green at night, making it difficult for light sleepers to ignore. Pretty sure in the actual room they could have smaller less bright one (this was the type you see in hallways). Also all the pillows are hard, be great if they had a variety of pillows from firm to soft to satisfy all needs. Other than those two issues it was great!
- Philip (8/5): Nice for a budget stay - Nice quaint location in Johnshaven above a restaurant. We ate dinner downstairs and it was great. Our stay overall was pleasant. Rooms are very small. Toilet did not flush consistently.
- ANGELA (8/5): -
- Sean (8/5): - Hotel staff warm and friendly. Location is superb literally 50m from the harbour. If you like seafood the resteraunt menu is amazing. Rooms are small but comfortable and good for the price.
- Calum (10/5): Loved the food - The breakfast and evening meals were absolutely top notch, couldn’t fault it at all. All staff were very friendly. Lovey village and area to have a walk about. Nothing
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Norbert (10/5): Very nice place - Our room was small but comfortable and spotless. Anchor hotel has a pub downstairs with delicious food options and drinks. We also had a great breakfast the next morning. Overall a very positive experience, the staff is exceptionally kind.
- Barbara (9/5): Lovely little place, we only stayed one night but will definitely stay longer the next time. Thank you to all the staff - Lovely friendly pub in a beautiful seaside village.
Lovely room , the Staff were so welcoming and the food in the restaurant was amazing.
- SandraB (8/5): Lovely food in a lovely location. - Dinner was excellent. Room was comfortable. Location perfect. Service excellent. Very reasonably priced.
Nice breakfast. Personally I would liked a bit more of a 'continental breakfast' but
what I had was beautiful.
- Viktória (10/5): - close to the sea, history is breathing down your neck :-), the staff is helpful and the rooms are clean and nice, really exciting stay, the price is more than acceptable there is nothing to tell
- Duncan (9/5): -
Davvero bello
- Alistair (8/5): -
- violet (10/5): -
- Helen (7/5): Lovely pub, good food, basic accommodation - The staff were really lovely, very attentive, looked after us really well. Lovely pub and restaurant. Food was great. The room was very small and had a musty damp smell. We could also hear the person snoring next door. The rooms are just very dated but adequate for a one night stay.
- Gaynor (10/5): Delightful stop :) - Fabulous food
Warm and inviting
Comfortable sleep
Cute town Loved it!
- Elaine (8/5): - The location was lovely and the bar restaurant food was delicious. The room was very compact which was fine for an overnight. The bathroom has a tiny sink which was awkward to use.
- Merv Brookes (7/5): -
- Joe (10/5): A home from home - Friendliness Not doing food Monday > Wednesday but they are beyond helpful making sure you have other options for somewhere to eat
- Calum (7/5): - Lively pro active place , encouraging people in to enjoy the food and atmosphere. Compact but comfy room, but no table for work computer, however the staff allowed a table in the bar.
- Edward (5/5): Really loved the apartment went last year but desperate need 0f a good clean and lick of paint - Location Needed blackout for bedroom as street lights came through curtains and needs TLC especially bathroom
- Simon (8/5): Too brief yet thoroughly enjoyable! - Lovely stay in an extremely good value, characterful village pub and hostelry - with scrumptious food and drink! Perfectly positioned in the village facing the harbour with sufficient on street parking.
- Julia (3/5): Fantastic Location Marred by Unacceptable Hygiene - The location is absolutely fantastic, and I really enjoyed the morning coffee and breakfast spread. The Shower: Quite frankly, I have never seen a shower so filthy; it literally made my skin crawl.
Hygiene Standards: I have traveled widely, including to countries where water is a scarce resource, and I have never encountered this level of grime.
Maintenance vs. Cleaning: While the building is old, "character" is no excuse for a lack of basic scrubbing. An old bathroom can still be a clean bathroom.
- STEVE (1/5): Worst ever hotel and room I have stayed in and I am 70 - Nothing Everything wish I took more photos the place stunk
- Lee (9/5): -
- Donna (8/5): Great, comfortable stay in a lovely location - Friendly, helpful staff. FANTASTIC fresh seafood menu. Clean comfortable room above a pub in a beautiful location, right next to the harbour. Nothing
- James (9/5): A great stay in picturesque Johnshaven. - Fabulous sea food. Helpful, friendly staff.
- Raymond (10/5): - Breakfast excellent.food excellent.friendly staff. Nothing.
- Brett (9/5): A wonderful, character filled experience - The meals were excellent and the breakfast was fantastic. The staff and locals made our experience a highlight of our Scotland trip. Highly recommend a stay at the Anchor Pub in Johnshaven The room sizes were on the small side but had all that you needed.
- christopher (8/5): Very good - Food and pub excellent. Apartment was fantastic only slight grip was two single beds very very hard other than that brilliant. Johnshaven is quiet but cafe, lobster shop, village shop and pub was lovely Beds in smaller room
- Jennifer (8/5): -
- Max (4/5): We did enjoy our visit but the bedroom let it down a bit - Good food and friendly staff The bathroom was very small & dated
- Charlie (10/5): - Staff are lovely, very welcoming and friendly.
- Ronald (8/5): Good experience - Good breakfast - extra cost. Friendly staff No evening meal available Monday or Tuesday.
- Rebecca (9/5): -
- Wojciech (10/5): Wszystko extra - Wszystko extra!
- Ann (10/5): My stay was absolutely fabulous and I regret I was unable to stay longer. - Everything was just perfect and the food was fantastic. I was also allowed to have my dog with me. There was plenty of free parking. Clients and staff were all very friendly. Nothing to dislike.
- Beth (8/5): A home from home- we will be back! - We stayed in the apartment and it was lovely. Very clean, homely and had everything you needed! We only stayed one night but you could see yourself settling in for longer due to the fully kitted out kitchen and living areas.
We chose to stay because we’ve been at the Anchor for dinner a few times but we wanted to have the full experience of having a couple of drinks with our dinner too. And it was lovely! The food and drink was amazing. Staff were so charming and friendly, really welcoming! I felt like I was on a proper little holiday! Unfortunately there is only one thing that could do with just a tiny improvement just to completely make this a 10 out of 10 stay. I slept really well but my fiancé didn’t because there was a dip in the mattress in the main bedroom.
- Agnes (10/5): Great stay on boxing day - Lovely accommodation. Staff were
Amazing. And the breakfast was excellent Everything was perfect
- Lorraine (9/5): Loved our stay , and would not hesitate to recommend to friends, and we will look forward to a return visit. - We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment which is part of the hotel, but situated across the road from the hotel.
Lots of space, very cosy, and very clean.
Lovely bedding, and a good size kitchen.
Ideal location, with Hotel, cafe, shop, and THE Lobster shop, all on the doorstep. Overall we loved the property, it had everything we required, one or two small things could do with a little tlc.
- Beverley (10/5): - We stayed two nights in the Apartment with two dogs, excellent facilities, very cosy well stocked 2 bed flat. Opposite hotel so very close for food and drinks. Food excellent, very varied menu, local produce and an excellent Breakfast.
- Jacklynn (8/5): Except for visiting family - Good location good good Nothing
- Chris Malton (9/5): A great stay. - I had a great stay, the staff where very friendly, I had an evening meal in the bar. It was great to have a few drinks and chat with the locals.
- Mitchell (8/5): - Staff were amazing and a fantastic little pub
- Kyle (9/5): Great stay for a nights solo travelling for work. Staff were great and accommodating. - Excellent breakfast, good value The shower wasn’t very warm or powerful. Heating was also not very powerful.
Alles in allem sehr toll !!!
- Stephen (9/5): Perfect base for travels in the area - Perfect location
Apartment felt like home, great base for our short trip and had everything we needed.
Pub and restaurant across the road and village shop next door Only staying for one night
- SIU MEI (8/5): A cosy room to stay - The room even though a bit small is cosy and tidy with everything you need for your stay. Tea ,coffee and biscuits are provided.
The bathroom has got basic amenities like shower gel and hand wash gel but It is a bit difficult to adjust the temperature of the shower and the water could get quite hot.
Don’t miss the chance to visit the lobster shop nearby, their lobster rolls are not to be missed.
- Gertrud (8/5): -
- leslie (4/5): Worth it for the food. - good breakfast ,excellent dinner. No extract fan in toilet and no window.. When I asked for another drink the barmaid said NO. I thought she was joking but she was not. busy eating her dinner, Only 9 o clock. Very bad. Normally great staff. Owner was on holiday.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Paula (9/5): - Excellent breakfast.
Comfortable bed. What’s not to like? All good.
- Lou_Tay (10/5): Fantastic stay - I just needed a quick stopover and was my happy with my decision! The staff were very friendly and helpful & the room was great. Bed really comfortable & shower in bathroom was fab. Really quiet even though above a pub & lovely to wake up so near the sea.

so near the sea. It was clean and comfortable and served a good breakfast We took our dog and the room was dog friendly however there was some confusion where we could eat breakfast with her. Also when asked if we wanted breakfast at check in they were unsure if there was a vegetarian option and had to find out. However we were grateful to the staff for finding the answers.
