• Derek (9/5): A wonderful short stay in Durham complemented by outstanding accommodation. - Excellent service and very welcoming. Added bonus of a restaurant in situ which was outstanding. Exceptional hospitality- highly recommended.
• Antony (10/5): Superb accommodation for a walking holiday and sightseeing in Durham - Plenty of storage space in room (wardrobe, drawers) to hold clothes and other belongings. A bath in the bathroom, which I prefer to a shower. A great breakfast to set me up for a day's walking. The host let me have breakfast 15 minutes early on a day when I needed an early start. Handy to have an Indian restaurant on the same site for an evening meal. The final very steep climb up from the city was exhausting. Nothing to do with the guesthouse, but a local taxi firm let me down on the last morning when I hired a taxi online to take me and my heavy luggage to the railway station. A taxi didn't turn up and I had to walk. Perhaps I could have done better as the host offers to arrange a taxi for guests, but she had gone out on the last day..

Modern bathroom but mostly unusable due to sloping roof. About 5 flights of stairs to reach rooms. TV in Avenue room is next to door with a very uncomfortable wooden bench for seating.

• Lynne (8/5): Lovely place, lovely staff. - Lovely property with lots of parking space. Staff were excellent. Breakfast lovely. Walking downhill to the town centre was a joy - walking uphill on the way back not so good. Unfortunately our room was chilly. As the public rooms were all warm we may have been unfortunate enough to use the room just when the heating was broken. We did mention it to a member of staff but we were only there for two nights so we did not ask to be relocated to a warmer room.

Staff, especially the manager (?Anna) were so friendly and the superb cooked breakfast served with speed and a smile! I don't usually eat a cooked breakfast but couldn't resist this time- great to have the vegan/vegetarian options too! The location is up quite a steep hill so just be aware of that. One thing I felt missing was a brighter bedside light for reading but that was just a very minor point.

Room very comfortable. Location is good for the city - about an 8 minute walk - down a slight hill. Nice having a small kitchenette area, spare room requirements e.g. tea/coffee/toilet rolls in trunks on the landings. This being very, very picky - we had the Cathedral View room at the top of the house, my husband is 6' 2" tall - he had to be conscious of some of the sloping ceilings.

Great views, delicious breakfast, super friendly owners, spotlessly clean. Excellent location close to the city centre. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - stayed to visit the university. Wouldn't go so far as to say "didn't like" but our room was a little warm and very light in the morning which meant I woke up very early - the good news is I got to go on a lovely early morning jog around the city so no harm done!

The staff were incredibly helpful and nice, breakfast was fantastic. Check in and out was a breeze. I don't have a single bad thing to say about Farnley Tower. Would definitely stay there again.
• Mairi (7/5): Well placed, characterful small hotel for a Durham stopover, good but not quite great - Kudos to the owners for sympathetically restoring this Victorian classic. Management were helpful and accommodating when we had to check in after reception closed from a late-arriving train. Our room was generously sized, warm (perhaps a little too warm) and clean. Breakfast the next morning was also generous, with plenty of options and cheerful, helpful staff - and a great view towards the Cathedral too. Homemade berry jam was a nice touch; more homemade jam or marmalade and bakery bread would have been lovely too. Some small upgrades would go a long way - from cotton-polyester to pure cotton sheets (call me spoiled but they really improve sleep quality). Eggs Royale for breakfast were well cooked, but catering-supply hollandaise (I think) was somewhat bland and sweet. Decaf coffee and maybe herbal tea in the bedrooms would have been nice, although I realise if we'd arrived earlier we might have been able to ask for them.

Bed a little on the small size.(but it was comfy) A bigger duvet would have been better. Also hair conditioner in bathroom, would be a nice jesture. I usually bring my own , but forgot it.
• A Eirwen (4/5): Most , most disappointing - When I say that the kitchen didn’t know how to prepare ‘ poached egg on toast ‘ you will understand our disappointment ! - the eggs were served on the plate with 4 triangles of un buttered cold toast at the side !! The face towels were more like floor cloths

• David (10/5): - This is a beautiful guesthouse, our room (15) was absolutely lovely, great view, comfy bed, armchairs and table under the huge bay window, and spotlessly clean. The staff were helpful and attentive and the breakfast, amazing. Will definitely return.

• Andrew (7/5): Very nice and would recommend and stay again. - Cleanliness was noticeable, very friendly lady on reception and serving breakfast. Breakfast could have been better, full English and acceptable, but quality could be better, for example poor quality sausages.

• Christine (9/5): Suited us for an a couple of nights whilst exploring Durham. - Location was good, and a lovely breakfast. Bit dated, but very clean and comfortable. Attached Indian restaurant was good. 15 minute walk to town centre. No fan or opening window in bathroom. No way to dry towels
