Guest Reviews
- 534glenysh (4/5): Poor Breakfast - Went with a group of friends for a breakfast meeting as we had done in the past. What a change! we knew that it had new owners and that the restaurant was now Indian but as it was still a hotel we expected a decent breakfast on offer as we had had before
The full cooked breakfast was served on cold plates the food was cold Chicken sausages and Turkey rashers! egg had been standing around and the toast was still white. Most sent the food back and the veggie offering was not much better. We will not be going back and as a local i have been going since it first opened. I felt sorry for the front of house team Simon and Paul.
- Lynda (8/5): No problems at all -
- Valean (10/5): - Excellent for a short stay in beautiful Chester.the communication was great and facilities very well maintained. Quiet and comfortable. .
- Giorgio Gee (9/5): eXCELLENT VALUE -
- shonagh (5/5): - The staff were pleasant, and welcoming .
Tea and coffee with kettle ,supplie šš The rooms was on the 2nd floor, which was fine, but under the eaves, therefore my husband cracked his head often on the corners, even i did a few times when I forgot to duck, and I'm only five foot one!š.
The carpet looked disgusting, horrible stains all over it, which gave the impression of being dirty.
The hotel was situated on a very busy road, which then explained the provision of earplugs on the bedside cabinet. Very noisy during the night, and lorries passing caused vibrations!
The shower area over the bath was curtained off, leaving a very small area to shower in, thought the shower was good and powerful.
- Sarah (9/5): Fantastic will Definatly reccommend and use again -
- STEVE (8/5): Be glad to use again. - Just good value for money, no frills.
- Mariano (7/5): -
- Lilly (7/5): -
- Stephen (3/5): very disappointed with the venue. and disappointed we were nit made aware of the changes!! - The venue was close for our work. The Indian meal we had was tasty. We were very disappointed with the venue ,from our original booking this venue changed ownership, which had not been updated or corresponded with us. The smell in our room from the bathroom was at times unbearable. The food we thought was gong to be available was not as with the change of ownership, so we have to find alternative places to eat,
- Paul3860 (8/5): Decent place, decent price. - Only a quick review as we used it as an overnight base for an event we were attending.
On arriving the staff that met us were polite and helpful. We only had an hour to get ready before we had to make our way to a pre booked event a short taxi ride away.
They booked the taxi for us that was there waiting to pick us up at the correct time, which as we all know sometimes more than not you are stood round waiting for it.
Anyway, we stayed in room four which was just at the top of the stairs from reception, it was spacious, well presented and clean. The only thing that stood out was the headboard had been pulled away from the wall and was loose. I'm guessing we can all use our imagination as to how that happened!
Another thing I did notice though that when walking from the bed to the bathroom the floorboards squeaked that much that they probably woke the rest of the hotel up. As a man of a certain age I did this a couple of times during the night so I apologise to the other guests if I woke you.
There was a newly refurbished Indian restaurant as part of the hotel. We can't review that as we didn't use it but looking through the door it presented itself as clean.
Looking at the website before staying over we were under the impression that it had a bar.....it does but it is alcohol free and you have to bring your own if you want to use it. I'm not sure if this is something new that ties in with the new restaurant but something to be aware of for the future.
No need to worry about parking either, there's plenty of it which is always something that is on my mind as I drive somewhere I've not stayed before.
Overall a good hotel to stay in, I just hope those floorboards can be sorted soon.
- Paul (8/5): -
- mike (4/5): Wonāt be back - Advertised as a pub with food , turned out no bar licence now ,and has changed over to an India restaurant, No Bar
- Michael (7/5): - Great for the price
- Javaid (8/5): Excellent value for money if Iām in the area Iām definitely coming back to this restaurant even if I donāt need a room. - Excellent staff. Very helpful and accommodating. Despite arriving outside of normal checking time they waited for me and even prepared a full meal ordered 10mins before the restaurant closed.
If you donāt need a place to stay go and eat the food. I know Indian cooking and I can safely say itās the best biryani I have eaten in a restaurant anywhere in the UK including all the fancy London ones. Water pressure was dismal. Really really minimal and took ages for warm water to come through. The hidden areas of the room could do with more cleaning attention - I am being very picky here, behind the tv for example.
- Mairi (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): Nice place, decent Staff, well worth staying as true value for money. - A little bit further from Chester than I normally pick but actually only a pleasant 20 min stroll along the canal to the centre. Value for money so much better, rooms very clean, loads of free car parking and a very good Indian Restaurant within the Hotel. Would definitely stay here again. On the top floor I could not get the WiFi to connect properly but thatās just a niggle really.
- David (2/5): Poor and Disappointing Experience - The parking Lack of a bar
No cooked breakfasts . Lack of heating in room. Lack of storage facilities in rooms. Lack of a seat in room to watch tv. No staff at night when things go wrong and help is needed.
- Wayne (4/5): Ok for £40 - Locus and price Mid refurb zero behind the bar
Piss poor shower
- Spencerccfc (10/5): The place is made more special with Paul - Me and my brother went to Chester races and managed to book this room on the day through calling reception and speaking to Paul. Paul is an absolute asset to the place he helped us with everything even gave us a phone charger and helped book our taxis. The room was extremely clean, was only a £10 taxi to and from town. There is nothing I can grumble or moan about . AMAZING
- John (6/5): Probably wonāt stay again. Would have come back from the races for a drink at the bar but⦠- Friendly staff No licenced bar
- veronique (8/5): -
- Jayne (8/5): Comfortable place to stay overnight. - Clean, comfortable. Lovely Indian restaurant. Nothing
- Kevin (8/5): Most enjoyable - The location and friendly staff Alcohol free bar although there was a 24 off-licences garage next door
- Rupert (4/5): Disappointing as nothing as booked or described, still chasing refund through Booking.Com no response from hotel! BEWARE - The location and the room Change of āpub with roomsā to Indian restaurant and no communication prior to stay. No bar available, no cooked breakfast, all the reasons that we booked for where not available
- George (8/5): -
- John (8/5): -
- Andrew (7/5): -
- May (7/5): - Good for the price. Staff very friendly. The shower water pressure was very low but everything else was good.
- Gray (7/5): Had a quick one night stay, room perfectly pleasant. Food in restaurant was very good - Nest, tidy and clean. Busy road outside
- Claire (5/5): Not as expected from website - Close to Chester and some nice country pubs in the area Not as expected - recently changed to Indian restaurant so not as described on website, no cooked breakfast - only continental breakfast available at additional cost of £15, no Sunday roasts or pizza bar. No alcohol in bar which we were not told about on check in - only when we went to bar for a nightcap and told only soft drinks available. Workmen digging up garden all weekend so constantly passing bedroom door which we had to leave open as no windows.
- Dexter (1/5): Terrible, lied to and miss sold - Location The fact we were miss sold , this was sold to us as having a bar, traditional all day pub food , breakfast , beer garden , bar
To turn up to an Indian restaurant with no warning , the booking .com listing had not been updated nor had their personal website!
If I wasn't desperate for somewhere to stay that evening I would have refused to stay .... luckily the room was clean and tidy but next door to the restaurant toilet so waking up to other hotel guests using it during the morning breakfast was fun!
I did mention this to the morning staff during check out to express my disappointment but she shrugged it off and told me to complain to booking.com
Since then the advert to this hotel has now completely changed !
We stayed 2nd May over night , I have screen shots of their website along side the booking.com advert on the 3rd of may still advertising it as the old pub
This puts me off using booking.com again and you cannot trust this hotel
- Julie (5/5): Wont be staying again - Room was clean and comfortable Room booking messed up, supposed to be a double and single but allocated a double with the hotel fully booked. No communication prior that the pub was now an Indian restaurant, strong smell of Indian food in the room. Room noisy with people outside smoking and general loudness within the hotel from other guests and loud tvs.
Did get a partial refund due to booking mess up.
- jackieruperthewson (2/5): Disappointing Stay ā Not as Advertised - We booked this property when it was operating as the Rowton Poplars Hotel, expecting a traditional stay with a pub-style restaurant, licensed bar, and a proper cooked breakfast. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the business had changed ownership and is now operating as āThe Indian at Rowton Poplars,ā with a completely different offering.
While the room itself was broadly as expected, the facilities and services had changed significantly. The restaurant now serves Indian cuisine only, there is no bar service or alcohol licence, and breakfast was limited to cold items. These were key factors in our original booking, as we had planned a family meal and birthday celebration at the hotel.
What made matters worse was that we received no prior communication about these changes. This left us having to find an alternative place to eat at short notice on a Saturday during a Bank Holiday weekend, which was extremely difficult and stressful.
This stay did not reflect what was advertised or what we had booked. While the new concept may suit some guests, it was not what we chose, and the lack of communication was particularly disappointing.
- Thompson (7/5): - Great location, friendly staff, clean. I think its just been taken over by new people as its now an Indian Restaurant which was a bonus for us. Walls very thin so could hear next door a lot, we were in the attic room so headroom next to the bed and in the bathroom was tight. Couldn't hear the main road though with us being at the back and slept well.
- claire (8/5): One night get away - Staff were welcoming.
Bed was super comfy
Evening meal was nice Unfortunately partner is over 6foot and we were on top floor with sloping walls, shower was unable due to his height lol
Couldn't get tv to work but that was a minor issue
- Louise (10/5): Lovely - The room was lovely had access to the garden due to us having the dog and it was so easy to let her out even though itās off the main road we couldnāt hear a thing from our room the gentlemen that booked us in went though everything and was lovely. We also had dinner in their recently renovated Indian restaurant and I cannot praise it enough the food was beautiful and our waitress was lovely and so attentive.
- jonez (7/5): - Lovely place beautiful location definitely go back No food available,,small room for 2 adults and 2 dogs but very lovely
- diane (8/5): It totally suited our needs - The staff were all very nice and the room was spotless All suited our needs so nothing to dislike
- Oluwamayowa (9/5): It was lovely, comfortable and definitely worth the money. - I love almost everything about the property. 1. The room was very nice, we had one of the downstairs rooms with the glass exit door. The sunset view was amazing. 2. The room was clean and well presented, they made this nice shape with the toilet tissue and towel 3. The staff were friendly and they listened to us because we wanted 1.5 days for my interview instead of having to pay for 2 nights 4. It was quiet and comfortable throughout the night 5. We didnāt have to pay for parking unlike some other places 6. It is beside a fuelling station for those who might want to break a long journey.
It is highly recommended. Unfortunately, we didnāt take pictures of the room - it is lovely. We didnāt have a chair in the room, although they brought one after we requested.
- Richard (6/5): Ok for one night - The room was spacious and check in was easy It was a bit tired. The bathroom and room had mould and it was quite noisy due to the very busy A41. The breakfast was very expensive ( I did not choose this option)
- kato (8/5): -
- Kevin (5/5): -
- Amanda (10/5): -
- Aleksandra (5/5): - Good location, friendly staff Horrible water pressure. Tiny uncomfortable sink, small beds, no hairdryer
- Martyn (5/5): had to eat out as no restaurant at hotel. - Room was ok, bathroom good, breakfast continental, no cook food as kitchen having referb: new owners. outside lot of work being done, bar like builders yard day time, cobwebs on ceiling in bedroom, no kitchen or restaurant as advertised, bar not fully stocked,
- Caroline (7/5): Generally good if you get the nicer rooms - *friendly staff
*some rooms have been upgraded, comfortable and clean
*parking and security
*clean and pristine bedding *very noisy as lots of lorries driving past
*shower temperature does change from scolding hot to freezing cold ( PS this is in one particular room)
*carpet very dirty (two particular rooms)
- Ginny (10/5): Excellent value for money - Very clean and excellent value for money. The owners have put a lot of effort .
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Linda (10/5): Top pub great price - Helpful, informative and friendly staff. Immaculately clean and great atmosphere
- Morgan (7/5): - Staff very friendly nice location short taxi to town centre.
- Sofie (10/5): -
- Jane (8/5): -
- Josh (10/5): -
- Gino (7/5): As it was an emergency, it was okay for 1 night. - The bed was very comfortable Part of the ceiling was very low, heating in the bathroom didn't work, the tables and a mirror on the wall was far too low, the breakfast menu was a bit too expensive and didn't provide a full English.
- Jones (10/5): -
- Keith (9/5): No regrets at all. Will stay again. - Never had breakfast but the price for continental breakfast at £14 seems excessive.
Location for us was ideal to discover Christleton and use Cheshire Cat canal side walks and drinks/food.
Bar at the Rowton Poplar was a welcoming place at end of night but closes at 10pm. Very pleased with this hotel and staff. Exceptionally clean. Nothing really. Close to Road so early hours traffic can be above normal but my room was on near side so within 10m. Rooms further away would be better but no complaints at all because of actual value and good standard of the room and friendly staff. Will definitely come back.
- Tinasampson (4/5): Poor - Positive first. Good location for me. Seemed perfect on speaking to them and booking.
They booked me an accessible room, as I'm in a wheelchair. They said they served breakfast, lunch and dinner. Requested extra single duvet and pillows. Menu sent. Extras logged and ok.
They told me my room was off a courtyard and had a small lip in the doorway. Not a problem.
On getting there. Step into room. No courtyard, just a path with beer garden opposite. Door didn't open fully because bed was in the way. Wheelchair wouldn't go in without being folded and me lifted in. Shower had a step and no seat, although big enough. So I wasn't able to shower. Then told the kitchen was being renovated. So no hot food. They could have emailed me this before. Bed and pillows so solid that I woke up in pain many times. Cooler from pub going off and on all night. At 7.30 doors start banging then the sound of furniture being moved. Such a pity, because it looked so nice. They advertise as a hotel, but it's a pub with rooms. That's exactly what it says on the sign when you get there. They even had the sign outside saying breakfast, lunch and dinner!
On telling them, they just said sorry, have a nice day.
Could have got better down the road at the Premier Inn for the same price.
- kilpatrick (10/5): - Good people worth going to stay
- Samantha (10/5): Would recommend over any five star hotel! - So incredibly friendly and home like! Simon is an absolute angel, I travelled alone and felt very looked after Nothing
- Tracey (9/5): - Room with doors out to the garden No food
- - (8/5): -
- Moyo (10/5): -
- Hilary (6/5): A disappointing stay. We didn't expect to have to worry about injury when getting up out of bed. - Room was clean The sloping ceiling on one side of the room had the potential to be dangerous with the risk of banging your head when getting out of bed. There was no bedside light on one side and no bedside table on the other side . Only really room for a single bed. No wardrobe or cupboard space.
The shower was difficult to control the flow and the temperature and the flimsy curtain was difficult pull round and when you did made the showering area very small.
- ruthhC6364LC (10/5): Hope it keeps going. - Room ideal, and handy to let dogs out. Good view of the garden and fields beyond. Bed comfortable. Room mostly clean. Ample storage for clothes. Breakfast, though unfortunately no cooked breakfast available, was mire than sufficient. No evening meals, but they offered to heat up any food we bought, or said we could get food delivered. Ideal location. Close to city, but also v v v close to the beautiful Christleton.
Thank you.
- Liz (8/5): -
- Isobel (7/5): Pleasant stay - Clean and comfortable Kitchen closed no restaurant
- Umamaheswaran (8/5): -
- Natasha (10/5): -
- Phil (9/5): A little gem with great potential - Great location, warm and friendly welcome and clean, comfortable accommodation. Limited facilities due to building works (no evening meal) but we will be going back!
- Bridget (10/5): -
- Ruby (5/5): -
- James (9/5): - Comfy, warm, welcoming.
- Nicola (6/5): Ok as a cheap stay, wouldnāt rush back - Staff were friendly and helpful, bed comfortable. Nice view from the window Was informed a couple of hours before check in that the kitchen was closed during my stay- not ideal with a toddler having to find places to go out to eat- more driving which he hates. The only reason I was staying was to break up a long drive so annoying. The road outside is very busy. Fixtures and fittings pretty dated and scruffy (carpets wrinkled, holes in tiles, shower pole fell off on my head, Lino in bathroom not fitted to toilet) but clean and comfortable.
- Dean (10/5): really pleasant staff a bit unfriendly - good location nothing
- Laura (10/5): - The atmosphere and the people It was good
- paul (10/5): - Yes definitely stay again even had double x2 glazing to numb Road noises very cheap stay
- Richard (7/5): -
- Z6109BNmattheww (10/5): The best welcome at the Rowtons Poplar Hotel - We booked this hotel for one night to stay before visiting Cheshire Oaks , Paul who welcomed me my partner and baby , Paul couldn't do enough to help and be the kindest gentleman I have ever met in a hotel environment we will be coming back in the future as we like to take our little one on adventures very clean respectful real pleasure to meet him
Thanks Paul real great man
- Karon (1/5): False advertising of food services - The room was clean and comfortable. I have just spent the weekend at Rowton poplars hotel in Chester. We chose this pub/hotel as we were attending an event at another local place over the weekend. We also chose this hotel as it advertised food options.Due to both of us having disabilities we needed on site facilities with easy access.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner etc for the Friday Saturday and Sunday morning.
Being a pub we chose this as we needed access to hot meals for the whole time we were there.Upon arrival we were told there would be no food whatsoever only continental breakfast as the kitchens were being refurbished. As we didn't drive here this was a massive inconvenience and a lot of added expense and we wouldn't have chosen this hotel knowing this beforehand. The room cost was £223.20. I feel this place is knowingly false advertising and not notifying customers beforehand. This ruined our whole weekend and experience due to having to order takeaways and taxis to go find places to get food ,adding extra inconvenience and expense. We won't be using this establishment again for our future booking.
- Cheryl (5/5): - Good location and close to the venue we were attending. I am allergic to perfumes and advised this and there was a fragrance in the room which was making me wheeze.
Not clean.
Quite noisy.
- Jaz (10/5): - Big rooms
Wifi
Parking
- Friederike (10/5): -
- Ann (9/5): - Staff were very accommodating to my late arrival
- Kerry (8/5): -
- Ifan (8/5): -
- Jordan (5/5): Good value for a night - The bedroom and bathroom was very good The traffic from the lorrys shake the room at night, you can hear the other residents clearly. The hallway smells off damp because they keep the cleaning stuff there.
- Boby (1/5): I booked this hotel with my friend to attend a meeting in Wirral area. - Car park I booked triple room and payed £134 for one night for 2 adults, checked in at 10:00 pm and checked out at 8:30 am. On booking.com website the rooms picture shows two decent size beds but the reality is only one bed and other was a sofa cum bed. There is no cupboard to keep your cloths. The bathroom and shower curtains are dirty and moldy. I am really disappointed and will not suggest this hotel because of my bad experience. When I
asked the gentleman at the counted what happened to my booking he was saying some sort of explanations and to compensate he offer us free breakfast and we happly refused. Please check the pictures I attached to this review. This place looks like a decent loking hotel on booking.com site but reality is not. The area and car park is good. I really disappointed to book this hotel and wasted my valuble money. Please don't be cheated.
- Jojo (8/5): - Location of our room. Perfect with 2 dogs Kitchen had closed shortly notice for renovations.
- wiktoria (10/5): - Cheap price but nice kind staff and good location
- Michael (1/5): - The room was comfortable and the location was convenient for our purposes
- Maria (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Room was perfect , staff were lovely, would definitely recommend š
- Paula (9/5): Welcoming atmosphere. - Friendly staff made our stay. The breakfast was huge. Dinner was very good - not a massive choice but was of a high standard. It was a little out of Chester, however, I would stay again.
- Joanna (8/5): - Very lovely room, clean and comfortable.
- Michael (10/5): Cosy, Friendly, went too quickly š¢ - Breakfast, good value,
Requested some extras in room since it was our honeymoon, and everything was laid out perfectly. Wife was very happy.
Clean room Going home
