Guest Reviews
- KT (9/5): -
- Wilson (10/5): - Very clean and calm, the food was great and the staff very welcoming. Getting to the hotel without a car required some walking

- sangcheol (10/5): -
- Silvia (8/5): Sehr gutes Preis/Leistungsverhältnis - Bequeme Betten, grosses Zimmer, nettes Personal.
- Sandra (10/5): - Beautiful, peaceful, comfortable. The onsens were wonderful. The food was incredible. Nothing
- Yulia (9/5): Lovely authentic ryokan - Lovely onsen, small baths but because the ryokan is small, it doesn’t get crowded. Men and women facilities change overnight so it is possible to have different experience- either the outdoor bath overlooking the mossy boulders and the forest, or the cave. Very friendly ladies serving the food. The dinner and breakfast are perfect- very authentic, lots of food, quite unusual for a European person It’s a shame that the bamboo forest path and the old mine were closed due to construction works. You only learn this on arrival, we were slightly disappointed, but the onsen experience and the food exceeded our expectations
- Nina (8/5): Loved the onsens and staff - We absolutely loved our stay here, we were very well looked after by the staff. The rooms were really big and spacious and clean. The beds were very comfortable too.
- Alden (9/5): -
- 築山(tsukiyama) (8/5): -
- Ebba (9/5): - The staff here is lovely. We were served by two really nice ladies who were so accommodating and sweet. We were also served a really delicious dinner, and the onsen is really nice too. A bit tricky to get to
- Chi Fung (8/5): - Food is delicious.
- Eng leong (10/5): Lovely family ryokan - Family owned ryokan at a very quiet town with great Onsen water nil
- Deborah (5/5): I was disappointed with the stay. - The front desk lady was nice. The caves were neat to explore. We rode the cable car up to see Mt Fuji, which they recommended & that was great! The rental kimonos were nice. I asked about a massage & they sent a lady to our room. It was drafty & musky. You had to go outside in the cold to get to the Onsen. My futon smelled moldy which kept waking me up - this upset me a lot. There were no towels at the Onsen. The towels in the room were cheap & thin. There were tripping hazards everywhere, such as coming out of the bathroom, height differences that weren’t marked. The Onsens only had men’s hair products. They only had a couple employees which seemed overworked. Both Onsen’s were so far away from any employees it almost felt unsafe, as I was a lady in there alone, the only patron at the times I was at the Onsen. The place is under construction - they ought to enclose the walkways so you aren’t freezing outside to Onsen.
- kaori (9/5): -
- Siti Jaliah (9/5): Authentic ryokan experience everyone should go for. - Everything was amazing, from the hospitality to the facilities and food served. It has the authentic ryokan feel the moment we stepped into the lobby, and were welcomed with warm Japanese greetings. The food was prepared fresh every single time, and they were able to accommodate our dietary restrictions with no pork and alcohol. The older women running the ryokan were very, very kind. They kept the place clean and inviting, allowing us to relax and have ourselves pampered. The location is a little tucked away, but we were able to find it after circling around as we missed the narrow entrance. You will need a car to access the location. Some of the attractions were closed during our visit, but we will come again to explore the caves once it opens back up again!
- Olga (9/5): - Excellent dinner and breakfast, and overall the price quality is exceptional. Clean and spacious traditional room. Recommend!
- Jin Gee (6/5): -
- Basel (8/5): -
- Zoltán (8/5): - great traditional japanese style breakfast, onsen available onsite, good location bathroom had mold on the ceiling and had a bad smell that did not go away, the room cooled off very fast thus we had to run the heating often which made the air dry
- Vladyslav (10/5): Excellent stop to recharge and switch off - Friendliness of staff, cuisine, unique bathing It is a bit old, but it adds to the charme.
- Quen Fong (10/5): Overall great experience from hot spring and service and big room - Comfortable bed, great breakfast and diy, great service by two ladies at frontdesk and serving meals
Finally great price for stay A bit walk from train stay but manageable walk about 20 min
- Andrey (7/5): Good place for a one night stay. - Everything was good in general. The hotel and the facilities are relatively old, but in working conditions. A bit overpriced for the quality and location. Excellent japanese breakfast and dinner! All in all, is OK. There were no mixed onsen bath, only strictly separate men and women baths. The view from the window to the construction site was not very welcoming.
- Karolina (9/5): Relaxing and entchanting stay, would come back :) - This Ryokan was so lovely. I enjoyed the decor, and found our room very comfortable. There is a lovely bamboo forest and a shrine right next to it which was very nice to explore.
Our dinner and breakfast were amazing as were the onsen. Some parts like the outside deck and the old castle ruins were closed off which I didn't realize and was a little bit sad to see.
Also I tried to look for the mount Fuji views like in the photos and couldn't find them - but we also didn't end up asking for directions.

- Jose (9/5): Superb -
- Lawrence (10/5): A beautiful small inn with wonderful staff. - Honjin is a wonderful experience. We stayed for the L'Eroica Vintage Bicycle event. The kind gentleman at the front had our bike cases secured in minutes. The room was large with comfortable futons and huge pillows. Breakfast is outstanding, each morning a new treat. The staff ladies were kind and efficient. The lobby has a delightful lounge with cool drinks cakes, and ice cream.
The ryokan is situated a block off main road and nestled against a forested hillside. There's a pathway over the mountain into town. On top is a nice park with clean toilets and a good Panorama.
We intend to return for 2027 event and stay with Honjin again. Thank you Honjin!
- Emanuel (10/5): Lovely stay, would definitely recommend staying here to anyone interested. - 1. The staff were very kind and helpful.
2. The meals were outstanding, some of the best we've had during our two week stay in Japan
3. The room was very comfy and quiet, and the baths were natural ones and very relaxing. Totally worth the small detour on our trip from Tokyo to Osaka.
4. Just half an hour away by foot you can get a cable car to the top of a hill where you get a lovely view of Mount Fuji. It's a bit hard to get here from the train station with luggage unless you get a Taxi.
- Oka (10/5): Exceptional - Great hospitality, high quality food, authentic and clean room
- Reinaldo (4/5): Great for those who doesn’t mind remote location - Clean and friendly staff , English speaking It’s a bit too quiet and remote I found. For me it’s bit too creepy, I had to leave on the second day of my stay and went to a hotel closer to main town.
- Carlos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fabrice (6/5): Mixed feelings, but globally good points (onsen, authentic room, great local breakfast) - Pretty authentic ryokan, room exactly as you might expect a ryokan room to be (simple, clean, quiet, wooden and tatami). Very good, local and well presented breakfast in oldish yet charming canteen room. Free drinks and snacks. Simple but nice hot spring. Instructions about slippers/shoes (what you can wear and where...) a bit confusing and we might have felt a bit rude by ignorance at the beginning... Breakfast time was fixed at 8AM, not big deal for us but keep this in mind (a bit of flexibility would be nice). The bar area at the lobby would really deserved more welcoming sofas! Stains and hair on a sofa is not exactly what you expect from a Japanese ryokan...
- Leslie (9/5): It was a pleasant stay. - Located away from the main street. It is a quite accommodation enclosure. -
- Spela (9/5): Superb -
- Lam (10/5): Will come back next time - The good is yummy, more than value Nothing, I like everything
- Oxana (10/5): Exceptional - Super nice experience, friendly and helpful staff, huge rooms!
- Ida (8/5): Authentic and relaxing stay - Sweet staff
Nice and calm surroundings
Amazing food The was a surprise payment at checkout. Much higher than initially.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Hiu (9/5): Great experience, would have been perfect to have a ramp for easy access! - Very clean and tidy, nice food
Great onsen
Lift to go to the rooms No ramp at the entrance
- Amina (8/5): Great personnel and breakfast - Nice hotel with onsens and Japanese style rooms.
The look is outdated but everything is very comfortable. The personnel are outstanding and deserve a 10.
Good onsen and extraordinary Japanese breakfast.
- Markus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phil (9/5): Superb -
- Kristen (9/5): Comfortable and relaxing stay not far from Tokyo combining traditional aesthetics and modern comfort - The man at the front desk spoke English and was so friendly. My room was extremely comfortable and perfect to relax and work from. There were some good restaurants in walking distance and the hot spring was nice. It was perfect for a weekend getaway from Tokyo. I would go back again. They had a nice little area for snacks and confectionaries as well in the lobby. Out back is the remnants of an old quarry which are definitely worth exploring! The water in outdoor rock portion of the onsen was so hot I got burned and couldn't use it. I would prefer non flueresent lights as it killed the mood of the beautiful traditional space and made it less cozy. Without using the lights it was hard to read and write in the evening. These are minor details and all in all I loved my experience.
- Shichiji (6/5): Pleasant -
- Emily (10/5): Spa environment. Japanese elegance - Spa atmosphere on every level.
- Emily (10/5): Elegant. - Attention to detail; quiet and elegant environment.
- Patrick (10/5): - Staff were friendly and very helpful. Joji was the best! Amazing food and onsen facilities - very authentic Japanese experience end to end!
- Eric (9/5): Nice and simple place to experience Japanese Ryokan story and onsen. - They got a lounge with free drinks (juice and coffee) to enjoy. Staffs are very friendly. TV got no English Channel options.
- Kathy (10/5): Amazing stay with breakfast and dinner included - The breakfast and dinner meals were amazing! Always on time! The amount of thought that goes behind the presentation and delivery of dishes was unbelievable. We felt like royalty. The level of service was excellent. I always left the dining room feeling full and happy with the meals. Also really liked the complimentary drinks in the main lobby area. Location is in a somewhat inconvenient area that is a little dangerous to get by foot from bus stop Kona Onsen Minamiguchi (one road shared by two ways of traffic going at 30km/hr)
- Agnès (10/5): Great ryokan - We really liked this ryokan! The onsens were very nice, dinner was abundant and varied, and all the staff was very welcoming and helpful (and special thanks to Joji, who helped us a lot during our stay!).
- Bernhard (9/5): Wonderful experience - Asian, All good
- Julia (10/5): Wonderful kind staff, beautiful city, peaceful and rejuvenated - Incredibly kind staff, beautiful facility and onsen, wonderful food. The surrounding town is also very peaceful and great to walk around! I will recommend to all my friends and family. There were also special treats and drinks in the lobby! There is also a cool shrine nearby, just 1-min walk away. Everything was perfect. Thank you for your hospitality!
- Jason_hou (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vashekcz (10/5): Exceptional - This was only our second ryokan experience, so we don't really have a reference for comparison. However, we could barely find any fault with this one. The room was beautiful, spacious and well equipped, as were both onsens. Dinner was delicious, staff was professional and spoke enough English. I definitely recommend taking the dinner option, and coming on time (before 6pm). If I have to find a fault: our 13yo child was served a different dinner than us (perhaps that's normal), and frankly the adult version was probably better.
- Carl (9/5): Superb - The Honjin is a very nice, traditional style hotel in Izunokuni. The property is in a very quiet location and very well maintained. The two Onsen facilities were most welcoming and the cave onsen quite unique. The Japanese breakfast was superb. I will be recommending this property to others.
- Eliana (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Superb - Friendly Staff. Free amenities in the lobby available at opening times.
The bath cave it's a unique experience.
The traditional Japanese breakfast (Miso soup, tofu, sashimi, grill fish, pickles, egg, rice,...) was delicious! The distance to the train station can be challenging if done walking and carrying heavy luggage, but taxis are available and at affordable prices.
Some may find parts of the hotel a bit dated.
- Ross (10/5): Exceptional -
