Guest Reviews
- Pete (8/5): - Location was great
View was good Menu had a lot of fried food , limited choice and not cheap.
The hotel is a long way from anywhere so you have limited choice
- Denise (10/5): A Scottish seaside hidden gem - We were thrilled to find such a beautiful setting to stay and relax. What was a pleasent surprise was our young host. She was very professional, quietly present and informative to assist us as guests to answer questions and provide exceptional service.
The room 21 was lovely, an older english styling, with sitting chairs to read/drink and watch the beautiful day go by. Nothing. It was a perfect stay: quite, relaxed and spoilt.
- Nicolette (10/5): It’s all about the views! - The location is amazing! Views from every room are delightful and the hotel is in such a quiet and peaceful area. There are no roads running passed the hotel and only a few houses nearby so once you arrive you really feel at one with the environment. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with everything you need and the staff go above and beyond to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Breakfast is so tasty and well cooked, one of the nicest hotel breakfasts we have ever had and sitting in the bay window with views of the bay makes it even more enjoyable. We could have stayed for weeks, we love this place and will be back again soon!
- LINDSAY (10/5): EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS - THE LOCATION IS STUNNING - THE STAFF ARE AMAZING - THE FOOD IS MAGNIFICENT - OVERALL AN AMAZING STAY
- Otterson (10/5): -
- Finsbury (9/5): A wonderfully restful stay in an excellent hotel and location. - Balcary House Country Hotel is a delightful, cosy hotel in a gorgeous scenic location. It is very peaceful and restful, service by staff is excellent, menus and food provision is very good. N/A
- Joy (8/5): A relaxing and romantic stay in a super location. - The hotel is in a lovely location in the bay, and the exterior and interior of the building are colourful and cheerful. The room was spacious and had a great view. The staff were very helpful. The dinner menu was limited, and the cost of breakfast was very high.
- Lynne (10/5): Uniquely beautiful location with masses of ‘Old-Money’ charm. - Huge rooms decorated with lovely antique furniture, spectacularly quiet & beautiful location. Charming & comfortable lounge, great food. Maybe go for plain rather than scented candles, they don’t enhance the food.
- David (9/5): -
- Frances (8/5): - Location was perfect. Staff very accommodating and helpful. Room was really lovely and the view was perfect. Limited menu for evening meal.
- Cousin (10/5): Excellent -
- Derek (10/5): -
- angus (10/5): - Balcary was in a beautiful setting. I would definitely go back. When we first arrived the hotel was extremely cold, we complained and it still took 2hours to put on.
- Katie (8/5): Exactly what we needed. - Location was amazing with fabulous views. The dining experience lacked ambience with prebooked slots. We realise that we were out of season and, therefore, the hotel was slightly understaffed so I am sure it is a much better experience when the hotel is busier and fully staffed.
- Derek (10/5): -
- Andy (8/5): Very quiet - Very peaceful The food and drinks were overpriced and considering you are so isolated you have little choice to pay them
- Paula (8/5): -
- Paul (1/5): a mistake - View amazing. room freezing such poor use of an amazing venue very unimaginative
- Laura (9/5): the location is magnificent and the bay view beautiful. Very comfortable bed and lovely room and bathroom which had und - Stunning location, comfy warm room and bathroom lovely bed. We arrived in a verily cold spell and the dining room was cool although the proprietors provided a heater. Once we realised we wore an extra jersey and it was good.
- Michelle (10/5): -
- Peter (8/5): Peaceful Seclusion! - Balcary Bay is a quiet and peaceful location with little traffic and distraction. We had a family suite with a small terrace and access to the gardens ideal with a dog. Good shoreline walks. Staff very pleasant and helpful. The cooked breakfast was very nice but would benefit from some haggis and /or black pudding!
- matthew (10/5): -
- Sharon (9/5): The perfect weekend break - Breath taking location, Hotel was very homely and comfortable. Are room was very large, plenty of space. Staff so welcoming and helpful, nothing seemed too much trouble! We had a power cut on the Friday night (not their fault), so for our evening meal we ended up with sandwiches, cheese board and a nice bottle of red wine by candle light!! so romantic, we actually really enjoyed that. But thank you to the staff for doing what they could to ensure we were looked after and feed. Saturday night, we enjoyed a lovely evening meal and a couple of drinks by the wood burner.... We will be back. Parts of the hotel were a bit cold until heating put on late afternoon, please please put heating on sooner. but like I say still would come again.
- Amanda (10/5): - From our arrival to departure we were totally spoilt by the staff. A very warm welcome was waiting for us by Molly who showed us to our room and invited us to have dinner there.
This was our third visit to Balcary.
Our welcoming room had a sea view which looked directly out the island. To see a black sky with amazing stars ✨ was worth spending time in awe, with street lamps these days a total rarety.
We love Diana's ethos of organic healthy fresh food cooked from the menu and we chose fresh fish with organic vegetables.
Our room was super warm with organic milk in the fridge perfect for the tea and coffee supplied. All bath and shower gels were in the well equipped ensuite. The king-size bed had a wonderful mattress and we both had a very comfortable night's sleep.
The cooked breakfast in the morning was lovely to our specific needs seeved at the window table overlooking the island was very relaxing.
This was the first hotel for a long time still allowing check out at 11am as it used to be. Whereas most hotels now want late check in and you out by 9.30am or 10am offering less serivice making a short stay very rushed and in the darker winter days for me to allow for a run and a relaxing breakfast and was a lovely surprise adding to our relaxation we appreciated.
Our stay was above and beyond and will definitely stay again as very welcome escape.
There are several walking routes with map available and running 🏃 for me. There was absolutely nothing not to like our stay was perfect as a last minute booking with hours to spare the staff were expecting us and ready to do everything they could to make our short stay very welcome.
- Kewell (8/5): - Wonderful location, beautiful hotel, staff a bit faulty towers, but would definitely return Heating in communal areas
- Phillip (6/5): Lovely building and location. Restaurant service great, food not so. - Location on the edge of water was great. Room was nice and comfortable. Food wasn't great and overpriced tbh in the restaurant. Got order wrong too, but they did sort it.
- Marie (10/5): -
- Robert (8/5): - Location was excellent being yards from the beach. Our room was on the ground floor, as I'd had hip surgery, so that made easy access to the dining room & sitting room.
It was clean throughout but dated in its decor, quite dark inside. We had breakfast only while there. No self serve e.g fruit juice, cereal, yoghurt, it was brought to you. A menu had to be filled in the evening before & given to reception if you required a cooked breakfast. Pleasant enough stay, expensive for what it is. The shower took an age to heat up but while waiting the water was starting to collect & not drain away in the base so eventually it would have overflowed onto the bathroom floor, didn't use shower for that reason. The outside area to our room was muddy and full of weeds, obviously you're not going to sit outside when it's wet & damp but maybe think about wood decking instead of concrete slabs & give either side a bit more privacy.
- Sharon (10/5): - Loved The location. Rooms were really cosy and bed was very comfortable. The staff/owners were very welcoming and friendly. We had an evening meal and breakfast which was delicious. And hot. Would definitely stay again.
- Tracy (10/5): Really nice stay. Thankyou for everything - Everything Nothing
- Janice (5/5): -
- Barbara (10/5): An unforgettable experience. A truly magical place overlooking the bay. - The view from the bedroom, and all public areas downstairs were spectacular.
Breakfast was lovely.
I wasn't keen on my evening meal, but my sister enjoyed hers very much.
I felt the meal was pricey. Evening meal not special enough to warrant the cost, in my opinion.
Stairs everywhere. A bit difficult for me with arthritic hip, and particularly tricky with a suitcase.
- Evelyn (9/5): Charming, relaxing gem - The setting is wonderful, right on the beach, beautiful, traditional country house hotel with such a charming and relaxed atmosphere. I was delighted with a free upgrade to a beautifully furnished room with amazing views from the bay window. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, the food was excellent, very comfortable bed and the towels were an excellent quality. My 12 year old dog was made very welcome and he could accompany me at meal times in the conservatory which was filled with lovely plants and lightning. Very happy to have found this characterful gem and will definitely return! Only thing I wasn't keen on was the single use plastic toiletries.
- Tanya (10/5): Beautiful 1625 building beds super super comfy - Location location location
Views amazing Nothing not to like
- Russell (7/5): - The Hotel is in a fabulous spot on the estuary, we had amazing views from the room The evening meal was very poor
- Skimming (10/5): Brilliant night away, cant wait to come back! - Absolutely beautiful hotel, we had the bay view , massive comfy bed, huge tv, no problems with wifi or channel services considering the location is so remote, the food was amazing, everything was catered as healthy clean eating, anti imflammatory foods , we choose to have room service for our meal and were pleasantly surprised when a little dinning table was brought into our room so we could enjoy the gorgeous view while having dinner, our room was spotless, the bathroom was huge and beautifully decorated with a walk in shower and a stand alone bath, toiletries were supplied, we had a terrace with outdoor table and chairs looking onto the most stunning shore views, which also gave us access straight into the gardens and onto the beach , after our dinner we decided to go for a walk along the beach to star gaze, once again spectacular views, no light pollution, clear skies and so many stars, absolutely loved it! Staff were so friendly and welcoming, honestly they couldnt do enough to help, definatley no complains, we will be back, first time having a night away from our kids in 15 yrs and this hotel did not disappoint, we got exactly what we needed, comfort relaxation and delicous food! Perfect for a couples getaway ❤️
- Marie (10/5): Balcary Bay Hotel. - Exceptional location, situated right on the Bay, beautiful scenery.
All the staff are a credit, very obliging, very polite & very friendly.
This is our second stay here, definitely more to come.
Also the car park is free.
A hidden gem.
- Christine (10/5): Perfect - Beautiful, historic place with a fantastic location, but it’s the staff who really make it. They are all so kind and friendly, and the whole place has a lovely atmosphere.
- chris (10/5): Would highly recommend a stay here and we would definitely return - Location, comfort relaxation stunning views fantastic food and great service N/A
- Lorraine (8/5): - The view was lovely
- Austin (9/5): -
- Graham (7/5): Very warm and welcoming - Beautiful location Looking a little dated
- Douglas (8/5): Very enjoyable and a great location - Pleasingly old fashioned, great location and very good staff Decoration in our room was tired, some wallpaper pealing. The room electrical sockets were poorly placed. The food was good but expensive.
- John (8/5): I greatly enjoyed my time there and look forward to going back. - A delightful hotel in a glorious location. No musack in the dining room, please, especially when the piano was played by a computer!
- Stephen (7/5): It seemed they were operating with a skeleton staff, although there weren’t many guests to be served. - Location was fabulous. Room was spacious, comfortable and had a great view. Evening food was excellent, though rather pricey. Breakfast was pretty slow and coffee arrived only lukewarm (on one occasion).
- Ronald (10/5): Relaxing two days & nights - Good freshly cooked.
Location superb outlook to the sea Service rather slow as food cooked to order.
- felicity (5/5): Stunning location but need to up the anti with the menus - Location Friendly staff. Comfortable large bedroom. Breakfast was poor. Evening menu was limited and disappointing.
- Norman (10/5): - Absolutely amazing location Very comfortable hotel with great staff Would certainly return No complaints at all
- Monica (7/5): Beautiful location but feeling a little tired … - Absolutely fabulous location and our bedroom ( no 3) had the most fabulous view Unfortunately we were there on a Sunday evening and they were incredibly short staffed . The lady on duty was run ragged trying to hold it all together and did a stirling job. The food was very good but such confusion about whether some items on the menu were on or off !
Dining was in three separate locations and the ambience was lacking.
- Tom (5/5): Beautiful hotel ruined by very poor food - Location The food in general was very disappointing particularly the breakfast that was pathetic
- Andrea Bradley (10/5): A totally unspoilt gem of a hotel - The location was stunning, so peaceful and the hotel has a grand charm in every room. Our bedroom was one of the best ive ever stayed in. With 3 huge windows giving amazing views over the bay (room 3). The food was delicious and obviously prepared with love and care. The couple of staff we spoke to were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Definitely a place to relax and unwind. The only negative i can think of is the route to hotel needs better signposting as we nearly ended up in a huge hole on a dirt track on someones private property
- Stephen (7/5): Very nice - The hotel is in a wonderful location with outstanding views. Staff were very helpful and friendly, food was very nice, and hotel was clean and tasteful. We were not allowed to sit in any part of the lounge area because we had our dog with us so had no comfortable space to relax. However, the hotel have now said they are creating a separate lounge for people with dogs which will be nice.
- Alexander S (10/5): - Location , peaceful quiet
- Christobel (8/5): -
- David (10/5): Fantastic place will return 🙂 - Sea front views from the bedroom, absolutely amazing. We had room 10 which was great. Staff were really friendly and the food was great. Nothing really it was a great place.
- David (10/5): Myself and my wife would like to thank the entire team for an amazing stay and making our 30 anniversary a one to rememb - Hidden gem beautiful hotel very welcoming . Staff couldn’t do enough for you,and the view sun out and cove with island and ex coastguard tower now air bnb. A pleasure to wake up in morning and not full and able to allow the dog a bit of freedom to roam the country garden and beach without being on lead Meals were very good and well priced. Full English great and at a time of your choosing same with evening meals no times and restrictions to interfere with the planning of your day
- Paul (7/5): - Lovely setting, right on the estuary, views of Balcary island. The staff were excellent and the food was very good. The whole place needs an update, mismatched furnishings, the terrace to our room needed weeding and had an ashtray full of dimps.
- Janice (9/5): -
- Chris (10/5): An absolute gem right on the coast - Absolutely stunning views. Amazing location. All staff were so friendly and helpful even though they were super busy! Room was gorgeous too. Food was amazing too! Definitely dine here if you're visiting or staying at the hotel. Na
- George (10/5): - Peaceful and pleasant
- Alison (8/5): Lovely dog wanders on the beach, good sized family room, fantastic view from our room. Peaceful - The interesting building and amazing location Nothing
- Helen (1/5): Awful - Views Very outdated, mismatched and full of old tat. Dead flies on window cills in hallway and room full of dust, creatures and cobwebs. Breakfast awful. Not what is expected of a £200 a night room.
- Barr (10/5): We had a two night stay, everything was great. The location, the hotel, the staff and the food. We would definitely stay - We ate in the restaurant for the two nights of our stay and the food was exceptional. Nothing - everything was lovely.
- Patricia (10/5): Tranquil, amazing, attentive and considerate staff who make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. 100% would reco - An absolutely stunning location, beautiful scenery and tranquil atmosphere :) Room was comfortable, clean and had a terrace facing the sea :) Nothing!
- Elizabeth (9/5): - Location is fabulous. The weather was perfect which helped.
- Vicky (10/5): - I booked this for my partner's birthday. Beautiful place, right on the beach, opening the curtains in the morning was fantastic with the sea coming in. Highly recommended.
- Lindsey (9/5): - All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was lovely, lots of choice. The evening meal was amazing, all freshly cooked.
- Andrew (10/5): Uniquely beautiful stay at the tip of smugglers' bay - The location is extraordinarily beautiful, isolated and atmospheric. Picturebook scenery in every direction. The sea trout at dinner was truly exceptional. Very good breakfast too looking out over the beach and smuggler's bay. And we made excellent friends in the bar, chatting till midnight. What is more, I left my jacket behind and they very kindly phoned to say so and posted it back promptly. How charming is that! Nothing
- Trevor (5/5): Lovely location, nice hotel but poor attention to detail. - Position and location Chaotic service, limited yet expensive menu.
- Maria (8/5): -
- Steve (9/5): - Amazing hotel in a fabulous location.. Quality food , as ll locally sourced. Great friendly ervice, and the biggest most comfortable bed ever! Nothing really.
- Jane (4/5): Disappointed Whole place seems to rely on good staff - We’ve been before it’s a great location
Good outside access
Comfy bed Decor confusing and tired Reception a mess Kitchen cupboards in a bedroom ?
Looks more like a care home than a country house hotel
Food - cost is more important than experience it appears Never had a more disappointing main course or more confused service Breakfast - minimal choice, controlled quantity and terrible coffee
This experience did not justify a £60 charge for ‘deep cleaning’ after our dogs stayed with us
- Scott (10/5): We had a wonderful time and our wee dog loved his time there, they are very dog friendly and the area you can sit with y - Beautiful view, great room, staff were fantastic and the food was outstanding Nothing
- Frank (10/5): -
- Dougal (7/5): -
- Nena (10/5): I will be back definitely - We were welcomed instantly, the staff were amazing, the hotel was spotless, the location was amazing Slightly dated but that’s my only dislike the comfort and welcome and cleanliness was perfect
- Rosie (8/5): Cosy hotel in beautiful location with great cliff top walk nearby - Fantastic location, large room with amazing views, tasty food Eclectic decor
- Kirsteen (9/5): A wonderful experience in beautiful surroundings. - The location was truly beautiful and the view from our room was magnificent. My friend and I wanted to meet up midway between where each of us lives. We also wanted to bring a dog and I found the hotel through an online search, so we were not entirely sure what to expect. The room was large and comfortable and very clean. We enjoyed the food, friendly, extremely helpful staff and getting to know other guests. The whole stay was so relaxing and enjoyable, therefore we would definitely recommend this hotel to others. The location on Google maps caused was not accurate and caused both of us to get quite lost once we reached the postcode of the hotel. Independently each of us ended up on rough farm tracks and having to stop and get help from local people. The farmer I asked for help said that people often end up at his house asking for help. it would be helpful if there was information on the website or at booking to explain how to get to the hotel once you come off the main road because, once you know, it is actually fairly easy to find.
- Alice (9/5): - Great location, good food, friendly staff
- Ian (9/5): -
- Paul (10/5): Excellent - Location, impossible not to relax at this hotel. They made us go home
- Mary (10/5): - Beautiful setting, amazing views, professional welcoming staff, excellent food No air conditioning
- Ibboge (8/5): Cozy rooms and great location. - Great atmosphere, fantastic location. Very cozy and spacious room. Ask not to be placed in room 8 cause while the kitchen is working (5pm-8pm) this room suffers from noise due to a aspiratore placed just outside the window.
- Edward (9/5): -
- Jane (9/5): We really enjoyed the location, the staff attentiveness, the decor was slightly dated but very comfo - Cooked breakfast was disappointing. Location was stunning. The only disappointment we had was the standard of the cooked breakfast. It was sparse, poorly cooked and far below the standard of the excellent evening meal, which we had really enjoyed.
- Gail (7/5): Not as good as hoped it would be - Stunning view, lovely friendly staff Probably the food was not as expected not particularly good, unfortunately. The outside space was lovely and had amazing views but let down by a mismatch of scruffy outside furniture. The inside was dated and very old fashioned it gave care home vibes.
- Ian (10/5): Lovely, relaxed and comfortable. Beautiful location with extremely helpful, friendly and obliging staff. - Beautiful situation at the end of a country lane with a sea-frontage and secluded Nothing
- Anglea (9/5): Idyllic seaside escape - Brilliant seaside hotel - you literally touch the water from your room. Really helpful and engaged team working there and lots to in the area. Better baby bedding
- Kirsten Mclean (10/5): - Stunning location, Stunning room, what more can I say. Loved the relaxing atmosphere.
- Elliot (9/5): - location was fabulous
- George (7/5): Overall a nice stay , food was lovely , but overpriced if you have dogs with you imo - Location is amazing , fabulous beach location probably hard to beat Sells itself as dog friendly !! It’s most definitely not. It’s dog tolerant and at a hefty price . If you have a dog you are seriously limited to conservatory or small bar area
- Ross (7/5): -
- David (8/5): Great location ,friendly staff, comfortable bed, delicious food . - Lovely location right on the waters edge . Friendly and welcoming staff, couldn’t do enough for guests. Very comfortable bed ,great views and a spacious en-suite. Not a case of not liking ,more the property is a bit quirky. With unusual decor and the different styles and colours, these factors added a difference angle . We liked it but didn’t love it .
- Arnoud (8/5): Very enjoyable - Breakfast was good but tables very close together despite free tables a little apart Seating with a little more space between tables
- Philip (9/5): Relaxing and comfortable - Excellent location It was all good
- Alan (10/5): - Everything, a super traditional hotel beautifully furnished.
A great room with balcony and perfect sea view.
Hosts were lovely people and both breakfast and dinner were excellent
Situated in a beautiful bay surrounded by very nice gardens Nothing
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Charles (9/5): Fantastic location, comfortable accommodation, great food - The owner, Dianne, is passionate about her food; which is excellent.
