Guest Reviews
- Kurtis (10/5): Charming rural ryokan - The hosts of the ryokan were accommodating and welcoming beyond words. They made us feel right at home despite the language barrier. The dinner and breakfast were fully vegan after we communicated our dietary preferences and genuinely some of the best food we’ve had. The amenities in the women’s room were complete with shampoo, conditioner, makeup remover, face wash, a face steamer (wow!), hair dryer, straighteners, and curling iron. The attention to detail was immaculate. The onsen was cosy and relaxing. They have yukatas for all sizes. The ryokan is located in beautiful Ohara within walking distance of many shrines and temples. Can’t recommend enough.

- Sharon (9/5): Relaxing and enjoyable way to enjoy a bit of traditional Japanese culture! - Our hosts were very accommodating and made us feel welcome. When we asked about using bikes, the Owner immediately went to the garage and prepared bikes for us to use. They also accommodated a Vegan dinner and breakfast for one member of our family, which was very much appreciated. After we checked out, the Owner realized I had left my laptop in the room, and walked to the bus stop and caught me before our bus left. I was so grateful! The hosts are amazingly kind people. nothing -- we really liked it all
- Noémi (10/5): Best experience ever 😍😍😍😍 - This is the best accomodation we have ever been. This place is a little hidden pearl. An amazing ryokan run by an elder couple. The owners were super kind and helpful. The place is very clean and beautiful, so relaxing. There is a nice little onsen for women and one for men. Also massage chair, steam face beauty machine and all kind of extras. The food was amazing. We loved our room, it was big, spacious, clean and we loved to sleep on futon. We got yukata to wear, tea and a bike that can be used free. We unfortunatly didn’t have enough time to explore the area, but we will definitely come back. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
- Michel (10/5): - Excellent accueil
Cena e colazione buonissimi!
Onsen molto gradevole.
Grazie mille per l’ospitalità!
- Fotis (10/5): Kyoto's Finest Non-City Located Guest House - The staff was very helpful, polite and accomodating. They have thought of everything. Everything was clean. The onsen was sublime. The room was spacious and the windows were made of real traditional rice-paper. They provided us with TV and most importantly old-school manga. The breakfast was on point. The surrounding nature was serrene. On behalf of me and my companions, it was the best place we've ever stayed at.

- Lynn (10/5): - Beautiful location,Ohara was a nice surprise and such a calm lovely place outside of hectic city. Nice breather from running around sightseeing.
We loved this Ryokan stay, full of flowers and cute decor, soothing music , spotless amenities and the onsen was lovely too. Something almost magical about the environment.
The hosts are a lovely couple who are kind and thoughtful and we enjoyed their warm hospitality.
The hotpot dinners were very delicious and we enjoyed the traditional breakfast as well. We loved riding their bikes around the area. Explored some beautiful shrines and countryside of Ohara. Would love to return someday. Highly recommend.

- Xiaoran (8/5): Great experience. - The breakfast and the owner was very friendly. It’s kindly far away and you have to share the washroom and shower with others.
- Oliver (10/5): - Allows you to feel an immersion in Japanese culture The only issue is that it's a little bit of a way out of Kyoto, so either a drive or public transport. The bus was frequent and easy to catch though.

- Ahmad Faisal (9/5): Family friendly traditional guesthouse - Onsen, dining experience None
- Cristiana (10/5): Esperienza in struttura tradizionale fantastica a buon prezzo e vicino Kyoto - Onsen praticamente privato e molto carino, cibo eccezionale, struttura accogliente e proprietari molto gentili Niente
- Gergana (10/5): Traditional Comfort and Warm Hospitality - Really cozy hotel with a traditional-style room. Everything was spotless and nicely prepared, and we were given robes on arrival, which was a lovely touch. The food was excellent, and the onsen was fantastic – with plenty of toiletries and extra products available for women. The host was also very kind and welcoming.
We travelled by bus from Tokyo and arrived quite late, but that didn’t spoil the experience at all. I’d definitely recommend staying here at least once. Nothing
- Kean (10/5): An unforgettable traditional Japanese onsen ryokan experience for my family. We are very appreciative of the owners who - The owners, an old couple were both extremely friendly and accommodating. They were always cheerful and helpful in making sure that we were well looked after. They see that our dietary needs are met even when we informed them very late. Our meals were served personally by the owners and they were the most sumptuous local meals (both breakfast and dinner) that we tasted in Japan. The rooms were huge and comfortable with hot green tea serving. The onsen was a beautiful and unforgettable experience and it can accommodate about 3-4 people at one time. The decoration of the whole hotel is magnificent with Christmas lights and decors brought in the Christmas charm. Bicycles are also available for rent, my family enjoyed cycling the bikes around the rural town. Facilities were always clean and hygienic for usage. Surrounding temples are also worth a visit. We really feel rejuvenated visiting those sacred sites and the surrounding nature. None
- Yong (10/5):

- Paolo (10/5): Lovely traditional stint - Traditional setting, meals etc All was ok
- Hetty (10/5): - Service, hospitality and food are exceptional ! Great location, just 10 minutes walking distance to the nearest bus stop, beautiful setting - surrounded by scenic shrines and villages.
Good onsen facility with shared bathroom (well equipped, they even provide massage chair there), hot green tea in the room.
Super nice hosts ❤️ i would not hesitate to return !

- Kyle (8/5): - I like that this was a family run business and that they aren’t a big conglomerate. It’s a warm family welcome. I suppose a bigger Onsen? But it forced those of us in the Onsen to have a nice chat.
- Tokino (10/5): - Perfect location. Everything was within comfortable walking distance. The hosts went above and beyond and made us feel like we were family visiting home. The food was some of the best I’ve ever had provided at a lodging. It truly felt nourishing and healing to stay here. I stayed two nights and I would definitely recommend staying more than one night like most reviews say. If you want a taste of what it’s like to live in a Japanese home with Japanese relatives and genuine Japanese cuisine, this is it. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back again!
- Lorenzo (10/5): Autentico - Tutto, forse l'esperienza migliore che abbiamo fatto in Giappone.
Lo staff è molto simpatico e disponibile.
La cena e la colazione molto abbondante. Niente
- Kerstin (8/5): Well worth making the trip from Kyoto - The property is located in a beautiful little village with good restaurants and amazing temples around. The owners take great care of the property and their guests. The dinner was simple but tasty. Some of the facilities, especially the bathroom are dated. I missed filter coffee, milk and something sweet at breakfast. Finding the right bus stop from Kyoto Station was quite a hustle.
- Bonnie (10/5): - Everything. Gave you the traditional Japanese experience that we were looking for. Bathroom is shared but was amazing. Has a onsen in bathrooms that was very relaxing. Food was exceptional!
- Ci Ting (10/5): -
- Miguel (10/5): would recommend and return - Very good food
Very good shower and bath
Very good service and

- AISI (10/5): we would love to come back again - This was an absolutely wonderful traditional Japanese inn that fulfilled all of my husband’s and my dreams of experiencing Japanese culture. The owners, a lovely couple, were incredibly kind, and every detail of the meals was prepared with care. The inn was very comfortable and spotlessly clean! The hot spring was so relaxing, and the food was truly outstanding. Ohara is such a charming place, with the sound of flowing streams, rice fields, birdsong, flowers, and beautiful temples. We also enjoyed cycling around, which was so much fun! Overall, we had an unforgettable and heartwarming stay. Thank you so much to the owners—we would love to come back again if we have the chance! Everything is good. We really appreciate the time there.
Excelente lugar!
- Paola (10/5): Un petit nid tranquille - La nourriture y était délicieuse et l’accueil très chaleureux
- Roger (9/5): Traditional homestay - Excellent breakfast & dinner. Extremely attentive live-in couple. This traditional Inn is closed to a few popular attractions so could stay longer.
- Tomasz (10/5): Smak prawdziwej starej Japonii.

We loved the bath and the hot pot dinner. The hosts were incredible helpful and kind. The rooms were spacious and cozy. Nothing! We loved everything about this place.
- Jae (8/5): Very good - good breakfast
- Seng (8/5): Chance to dress up in traditional Japanese yakuta for photo op during dinner. - Short walk to Sanzen Temple. Shorter travel time to Kibune and Arashimaya Bamboo forest by car. Onsite free parking. Lovely sumptuous dinner and breakfast by host Not used to shared bath and toilet facilities. Noise insulation between rooms were not good
- Jenna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexander (9/5): Great - Great hosts, amazing bath, nice breakfast, good room and a cozy location Futon was a bit hard, but it builds character so its not bad
- Yu-chun (10/5): Exceptional - I felt super welcome from the moment that I arrived. This place is owned by an elderly couple. Although they don’t speak English, we were able to communicate because they are very kind and open hearted. I had breakfast and dinner. They are well-made and super delicious. I will come back again! Nothing
- Bisato (10/5): Really relaxing - The location is lovely, really close to the bus stop. The staff is amazing and I loved the breakfast! They provide also bicycle
- Nikolaos (10/5): Unique experience! Traditional Ryokan, amazing hospitality, a true Japanese village so organized and clean and with amaz - Wow! Such a beautiful room, amazing food and hospitality, unique nature, cool Onsen hot spring - the village of Ohara where Ryoso Chatani is located was a real dream, especially in Sakura (spring with cherry blossoms) We liked everything!
- Diane (10/5): Most refreshing and relaxing part of a wonderful trip - Perfect quintessential ryokan stay in the hills outside of Kyoto. Road bikes through the fields to the Lawson for snacks. The waters of the onsen felt very healing and much needed after long flights and jet lag. Favorite part of a wonderful 9 day trip in Japan. Highly recommend the stay and def add dinner. The food and the couple that runs the place are wonderful. Make sure to read up on etiquette at ryokan so you know how to handle the shoe policy etc.
- Kenny (10/5): Great location for getting into Kyoto, bus station was a five minute walk. - This is a traditional Japanese guest house in a beautiful setting, everything was first class. Five minute walk for number 17 bus into Kyoto perfect, also nice to return to the peace and quiet after a day in Kyoto. Everything about this Guest house was perfect,
- Nicole (10/5): Like visiting family - Very comfortable and welcoming. Staying here was like staying with family. We are vegan, so did not order dinner, the host was very concerned, and made us elaborate meals each night! I have never eaten so much on a trip! The hotel is also beautiful, centrally located for visiting temples and shrines, clean, quiet, and comfortable.
- Vivian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yann (8/5): Very good - A lovely place to take a break from the city. It features charming traditional rooms with comfortable futons, a nice and quiet onsen, delicious meals, and a warm and welcoming staff.
- Álvaro (10/5): Gran experiencia - The owner is very helpful and attentive. The food is traditional, we had Miso and Chicken Hot-pot for dinner and it was very tasty.
- Rcdrops (9/5): Superb -
- Hj (10/5): Cozy place🤍 - It was really peaceful and quiet, cozy place. The host was very kind and the meals were delicious. Onsen was well-maintained and clean.
They also offered bicycle rentals, so you can explore the village by bike. It’s a lovely spot to recharge.
- Imogen (10/5): Exceptional - Had a fantastic stay here! It was magical. No bad words to say. Hope to return one day. It would be useful if exact bus instructions from Kyoto centre to the property were automatically sent upon booking.
- Daniella (10/5): Enjoyed it - We loved it and would go again. It is a very unique experience and the family was so lovely. Sleeping on the floor is not my thing and not having a bathroom nearby.
- Nijansh (9/5): Superb -
- Jackson (9/5): Superb - Great experience, and a wonderful escape from the big city. Hosts were extremely kind, immediately making us feel welcome, and were also happy to communicate with us in English. Dinner was excellent and prepared tableside for us. Lack of soundproofing and a lot of light that comes through the windows can make sleep pretty difficult at times.
- Abbey (8/5): Very good - Ladies' bathroom is very special. Small, but they provide everything you need. Lovely hot spring onsen bath.
Also, the food was excellent quality and quantity. Great value. Air-con heater in the room made sleeping uncomfortable, so we turned it off the second night and wrapped up warm. Otherwise, no complaints.
- Lara (10/5): Would go back! - Loved it. So lovely and a great experience
- Janis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ravello (10/5): Highly recommended - friendly host, good location, hearty dinners and breakfasts, hot spring bath nothing
- Sigifredo (10/5): Exceptional - everything about this place it's exceptional
the stuff was excellent
the room as well

the free rental bikes
the food was exquisite
the bathroom it's fully stock even has a foot massage
the music inside the hotel was an excellent touch
- Katarina (10/5): Exceptional - wonderful place and absolutely gorgeous meals!
I really enjoyed my stay! I have a weird electric noise in my room, I don't sure what it was but once in 2 minutes it's make a squeak sound, maybe it's Air conditioner, but I didn't turn it on... I take a earphones for sleep 😴
but it's doesn't a big problem.
- Tayla (10/5): Exceptional - Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Using the Onsen was a great experience. Ohara is a beautiful little town.
- Christine (9/5): Had a lovely stay . Staff were friendly and helpful and it was traditional - It was rustic and in the country. A wee bit far out of Kyoto
- Mehul (10/5): Fabulous experience, highly recommended! - Oh wow! where do i begin? Amazing property, exceptionally clean and the most amazing hosts. It is run by an elderly couple who are very helpful even with their limited English. The food was great and also flexible as per your dietary needs. We notified them about us being vegetarians and the meal was prepared accordingly. There is also cycle available for free, we used it in the morning to explore Ohara a little. The bus stop is 5-10 mins walk from the hotel. There are buses directly to Kyoto station. They also give you free magnets before you leave which was very nice gesture. The onsen was good as well. everything was great, except that there should have been body massage chair for men as well just like for women.
