Guest Reviews
Completamente recomendado si quieres vivir unos baños tradicionales japoneses.
- Luisa (10/5): Super! - Super onsen! Sehr sauber und super nettes Personal.
- Frances (10/5): -
- HITOMI (4/5): -
- Bram (8/5): Attentive staff, comfortable baths and larger than expected rooms. - Friendly front house staff and took time to explain a lot of details.
Rotenburo and the hinoki soaking tub were really nice Needs better room explanations in the listing. It was very large and I understood better why the cost was high.
Would also like to see the booking.com include the chance to include dinner

- Hannah (9/5): Perfect rural ryokan stay. - Very traditional ryokan. The staff was amazing and kind. The location was rural but there was still food. In retrospect, I would've booked the room that comes with a meal delivered to our room. But we went out and got a very great feel for the town and ate at a place that was very authentic. I liked everything about it. There were some cobwebs in the bathroom and some old features but they didn't take away from my love of this stay.
- morio (6/5): ?
- Laura (10/5): One of my best stays in Japan - It’s a dreamy place. The staff were really nice, everything was spotless, the room was spacious and comfortable, and the onsen was stunning. I would highly recommend staying here. They also offer dinner, but you have to book it at least 3 days in advance.
- Etienne (9/5): Great landscapes in a quiet town, great experience - Large room, good meal, great view, clean, well decorated outdoor bath. Friendly staff too. Overall very good experience. I wish there would have been a private bath.
- Amelia (10/5): Can't miss, unbeatable mountain hotsprings inn - The indoor/outdoor onsen (hot springs) was unbeatable--a truly can't miss experience during our trip to Japan. We each visited the onsen multiple times a day during our stay. The location and view of the mountains was amazing. We even stayed up to watch the sunrise from our room. The room facilities were very spacious--the most space we had during our trip to Japan. The futon beds were surprisingly comfortable--In my opinion they were actually more comfortable than other western-style hotel beds we experienced. The staff was helpful, kind, accommodating and available to us at any hour during our stay.
Optional add-on: The kaiseki (fine dining) experience was once in a lifetime --definitely only do it once. There are some adventurous foods on the menu which even slightly picky eaters will not enjoy, so it is best taken as a out-of-your-comfort-zone challenge, especially because of the cost approx 24,000 yen for 2 people. My husband says "this is a culinary experience you must try in Japan."
About Yugawara - This location is easy to access from Japan Rail + Bus and simple to nagivate on foot (prepare for hills and bring your walking shoes).
Highly recommend the pottery class at do-tougeikan, which is walking distance from this property.
Highly recommend checking out Fudo Falls waterfall which is a short hike and has a municipal museum cafe nearby. Great for a shrine visit, nature walk, and lunch.
Trying to find food that was open and available at various times was a challenge in this small town. (Also bring cash for cash only locations). For breakfasts, we tried a diner with robot waitstaff and used the hot water in the room to heat oatmeal we brought ourselves. Note that you will have to walk uphill to get to the property and around the town. If you don't speak Japanese or are unfamiliar with the rituals and instructions for using the onsen, I would recommend researching on your own. The staff gave an overview, but we also appreciated reinforcing that with some of the info we looked up on our own.
- Charles (9/5): Lovely local experience - Super friendly staff. Spacious room. Amazing view both from the room and onsen. Food is tasty.
Highly recommended.
- Kristina (8/5): - Cozy, carefully prepared room with small details and attention. Staff was very strict for sharp 10 am check out, seemed they did not liked foreigners, having extra person joining the room later charged "as new room price", after checking out staff was not friendly to advice on places to see, we were asked to search information on the internet.
Although facility and the house itself is very authentic and comfortable we did not felt to be very welcome.

- Maximilian (8/5): - Ein wirklich tolles Ryokan.
- KENICHI (5/5): -
- Dora (9/5): Relaxing day - Hospitalty of everyone The food was great, but the cooked fish had too many bones.
- Ariel (10/5): Wonderful service and beautiful property! Highly recommend! -
- Marie (9/5): Superb - An amazing experience! The public bath was great, the staff could not be friendlier and they were so helpful! The rooms and facilities was excellent! Food was also such a nice Japanese experience!
- Vidit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (7/5): Good - onsen
- Shiraishi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diogo (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect to relax, location might not be the best as it is a little bit remote Need to book meals 3 days in advance
- Erica (10/5): A dreamy getaway - It felt like a dream. We didn't know we could be this well taken care of until we stayed at Wakamatsu. From the moment we walked in, the staff made sure we were comfortable. They are hard-working, gentle and caring. The onsen was beautiful and the facilities are super well equipped, you won't be short of amenities. The properry itself transmits calm and relaxation, there is gentle music playing outside the onsen and our room was beautifully decorated and spacious.
I don't have enough words to describe the dinner - it's not just that the food was fantastic and well-presented, but the service was so, so thorough and the pace of the dinner was perfect; it was refreshing to be able to take your time with each course.
To top it all off, the staff saw us off as we checked out with such care. If we return to Yugawara, we know where to stay again. -
- Regula (10/5): Perfect stay to relax, enjoy the calm and the food. - Absolutely everything! Authentic, spacious room, incredibly friendly staff. We had dinner there and the chef is a magician!
- Maitri (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kazuko (9/5): Superb -
- Audrey (10/5): Exceptional - The ryokan was clean and really nice, everyone working there was super helpful and friendly. The food was the best we had in Japan. We would totally stay here again if we were to come back to Hakone.
- Dana (9/5): Excellent! - The food was outstanding, the onsen is beautiful, the staff is extremely kind and helpful. We loved our stay here! A highlight of our trip to Japan.
- Nicole (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elisa (10/5): We had a great stay in one of the Japanese style rooms. There was everything we needed and more! The staff was always fr - Great rooms and wonderful staff.
- Susan (10/5): An experience not to miss - This was a fantastic, traditional ryokan experience. The building and rooms were beautiful. Robes were provided and we enjoyed the large family area in our room for relaxing with our whole family. The public bath was amazing & though we were hesitant to use it bc of our Western culture of privacy, I am so glad we didn’t miss the opportunity. The staff were welcoming and serving. It was humbling to be in such a beautiful, careful environment Not a lot of food choices without a hike. But not a deal breaker
- Brittany (10/5): A very special experience - The dinner was very special and the staff were very nice For foreigners, putting Hakone in the title made it seem closer to that region
- Sophie (10/5): Great experience of the Japanese fine hospitality - - super hosts, very helpful, whatever is your request, doing their best to translate in English and make it easy for you
- large bedroom with very comfortable futons
- great house full of tatamis
- onsen : inside and outside opened still late at night
- opportunity to get a kaiseki dinner - path to get there may be complex for some, but we managed easily : from Tokyo with Shinkansen to Atami and change for an other train to Yagawara. Then get the bus for few stops. And a little walk (5-10 min) to the hotel.
- we don’t really know if there is much to do in the town, … that was fine for us : we just relax there with tea and a book, and went to the onsen before and after dinner at night.
-first I found dinner a little pricey and finally I am really happy that we got our first Kaiseki full experience
- Luca (10/5): Exceptional - Efficient proactive professional kind
- Emily (10/5): So relaxing - Very hospitable and welcoming ryokan. It was my first experience, but I loved it. In a bit of a sleepy town, not much to do, but for my purposes, it was exactly what I wanted
- Chifen (8/5): Very good -
- Mathias (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olli (9/5): Very relaxing stay - The service and food are fantastic. The food was a very good variety of different things and served beautifully The staff is very friendly and will take care of your luggage. The hotel is very old style japanese ryokan with character. In some places the ryokan is showing it’s age.
- Guzman-keller (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karim (10/5): Relxing, friendly staff, quiet and aurrounded by wooded hills. - Very friendly and helpful staff dressed in traditional kimonos adding to the already great atmosphere. Quiet relaxed location. Beautiful rooms and scenery. We were the only westerners there.
- Alan (8/5): Very good -
- Joan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jean-denis (7/5): Good - Staff / good futons Food
- Paweł (10/5): Being there helped me to put my mind at peace. - I liked the location and the comfort that the property provided. The hot springs were amazing, the staff was nice and helpful and the room was cozy and comfortable.
- Wai (9/5): Superb -
- Adriana (9/5): Staying at Wakamatsu was so relaxing and such a great reset and escape from the busy city - I liked the accessibility of the public onsen. It was nice being able to go at any time in the evening. It was great how quiet and safe the hotel was. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a getaway from the city. I did not like how I could not opt for dinner/breakfast if we didn't select it prior to staying there. I would definately recommend opting for the breakfast and dinner because there are few izakayas around the area and one of them wouldn't let me and my father dine even though there were plenty of seats available.
- Mizuki (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (10/5): Well worth another trip back just to stay at this Ryokan again!! - The accommodations were fabulous! The room was spacious and beautiful. The onsen had indoor and outdoor baths and was serine. The meals (breakfast and dinner) were delicious. The Staff was exceptional.
- Verified traveler (2/5): -
