Guest Reviews
- Eric (8/5): -
- David (5/5): This stay did not measure up to the last one just 5 months ago. - The location was perfect. The beds were very comfortable and the room was clean. The room was cold when we got there at about 6 pm. The heater was difficult to use and took a few hours to warm up to a comfortable temperature. There was a dead fly and a live wasp like bug on the window. The coffee machine was out of coffee so we had to go across the street for our first cup. There was no breakfast. There was no one but the two of us in the hotel. We stayed here last November and it was an awesome experience, not so much this time.
- Julie (10/5): - The room was so cute and cozy, I would happily live there. They have a record player with great albums like Simon & Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park and a fireplace. The outside is a bit misleading in that you wouldn’t expect such nice rooms.
- Leonard (6/5): -
- David (10/5): One of the best hotels I have stayed in. - The Coffee was good no breakfast No. Breakfast available
- Maksim (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): - Hidden gem! Make your reservation for dinner at the restaurant…locally sourced, fresh, unique options…sooo good! Amazing specialty drinks, too! Friendly and welcoming staff. Cozy accommodations. Who needs tv when there’s a turntable and an eclectic collection of vinyl to choose from? Sit on the floor and choose your favorites to be transported to your teen years…my husband and I had so much fun talking music after an enjoyable dinner. We’ll be back!!!
- Ronen (9/5): Lovely place, great host. - The host and the staff were amazing. friendly and very wellcoming. The wooden furniture in the room felt a little bit sticky.
- John A (10/5): - no place in town to get morning coffee weekdays :-(
- Beth (10/5): Incredible hotel in the heart of Elizabethtown with records, a restaurant, and fun! - We stayed here for a special birthday celebration, and a show at the Depot Theater (our new favorite theater). The inn is stunning, retaining many elements from its 1808 origins. Quirky, creative, colorful, clean, FUN room with a super soft bed, book library (you can take books you like!) and a record player with many albums to play. Easy check in, and an amazing restaurant downstairs; this is truly a one stop destination hotel! Great location, and just a wonderful stay. I bought us each the Deer's Head Inn tee shirts-so cute to have them in the room for sale, and the owners were nice enough to mail us one in the color and size we wanted that wasn't in stock. I mentioned it was my husband's birthday celebration on the reservation, but no special efforts were made, which would have been great. I asked in advance if the restaurant did anything special for birthday and was told that he could get a free dessert. We mentioned it was his birthday several times to the server, including when we ordered dessert, and though she wished him happy birthday, it was still charged to the bill. It's a small thing but would have been really nice.
- Susan (3/5): The good, the bad, and the ugly. - Our room was not ready for us. We entered the room and there was dirty towels on the floor and the bed had not been made. It was delayed by over three hours. The owner called in her husband to come clean the room.
An hour and a 1/2 into our stay housekeeping knocked on the door and entered without our permission in to apologize for the delay.
I guess it was our fault for not looking at the amenities. There was no television. In a town where there's absolutely nothing to do, a television would have been nice.
The location was on top of a very noisy restaurant/ bar with loud live music.
Only two towels were provided, and a spare one would have been nice. There was no towel or carpet provided for the bathroom floor. The tile floor was very slippery as the shower door opened out into the floor where water dripped and someone could slip very easily. No tissue was provided in the room. We had a two night reservation and we decided not to stay for our second night. The next day we received a text from the owner's offering us a refund for one of the nights, which was a very nice unexpected offer. However, we never received it. Multiple texts went back and forth between us and the owner. I contacted booking.com booking contacted the owner. The owner blames booking and booking blames the owner for us not receiving the refund This went on for 3 weeks, and we never received the refund, very disappointing.
This is a rather old building and could use some updates, and I do not recommend this property.

- Christina (10/5): - Everyone was extremely kind and helpful. Very quaint and beautiful location. Thank you!
- Anna (10/5): - Fantastic time!
- Alexandra (9/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): - First impression is great. then no instructions on how to lock your door if you leave your room once you use the code.
No coffee cup near their new coffee machine
Matress was terrible.
But the room was great. loved the books.
- Michael (8/5): - The owner was very welcoming and accommodating when we arrived. The room was quite large and comfortable, but a bit worn. Room and bathroom were clean and functioned well. No TV in the room, but several shelves of books, so we didn't even miss it.
- Kelsey (10/5): - Perfect stay! We loved the record player, the room decor, and even the water pressure and soaps in the bathroom. Would definitely come back!
- Ivan (6/5): - V
- Michelle (7/5): - Very cute concept No staff! You need to call.
- Richard (10/5): Exceed expectations - Loved our book lined room, 5 star charm, great linens, easy check in
- Nicholas (2/5): - The Deer’s Head Inn is, as its name implies.. dead. The revitalization of this building needs serious work; the amenities are nonexistent, the air conditioning was completely out in our room during our stay, and the food was misleading. The overall saving grace could have been the food, but if you’re going to make fancy descriptions and great sounding dishes on your menu, then please ensure they do in fact taste just as phenomenal. Do better, chef!
The experience as a whole was beyond pitiful, and let’s be honest, the room was stifling and extremely uncomfortable (e.g., the bed was not great, and there was no closet). However, a lover of music will enjoy the record player in the room. The shower pressure was great, but watch out for scalding hot sections to surprise you, and obviously the historical value of visiting such a place for history buffs is appealing.
Altogether, not a great experience, and this will, of course, be a one time stay. Sad, just sad. This place is giving Urban Rustic a run for its money! Oof
- John (10/5): Great place to stay - Nice and cozy —comfortable rooms
Books and music available in each room
Good communication on access to rooms
Restaurant is great too
- Elliot (6/5): - Room was cold. Electric heater in room didn't work. No management on site so had to call about lack of heat. They sent someone over who took two electric heaters from other rooms and gave to me. They worked well
- Paul (9/5): Superb - Very quaint little place to disconnect. Wi-Fi but no tv . Books records and very relaxing. The people who came to cut down a tree right next to our room at 730 am on Mother's day.....kinda killed the whole vibe.
- Goett (10/5): Teenagers Actually Liked Something! (This Inn) - Owner was friendly and incredibly helpful. The restaurant/bar downstairs had a great menu, bartender's drinks were delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and convivial. Record player and vinyl in the room was a hit with the teens. Rooms were clean and cozy.
After choosing a dud on our last "quick overnight" during a long haul, my daughter informed me that I have officially redeemed myself. Would definitely return.
- Ray (10/5): Exceptional - Nice Room Cold
- Kate (9/5): Superb - This place is adorable! My room had a record player, vintage records, tons of books, and a comfy bed. The owner was friendly, proactive, and responsive. I like staying in this area as a winter "base camp" for day hikes -- it's not far from major trailheads and isn't as chaotic as Lake Placid. It's an old building, which is what gives the place its charm, but be ready for old building issues. The walls are thin, and modern amenities wedged amongst older fixtures means that you run into things like a radiator placed precariously close to the toilet. However, I would definitely stay here again!
- Thomas (8/5): - All good for our purposes.
- Dmitry (9/5): Great location and price. - Great location and a very reasonable price. The family room was very spacious and comfortable for the threee of us. A record player and an awesome selection of books in our room were a great added bonus. It took a bit of time for the hot water in the bathroom in the morning, which is probably expected during winter time.
- Austin (8/5): - Definitely a cozy inn. Great location next to so many trails. Wasn't able to get dinner in their restaurant and bar downstairs but the menu and space looked good! Only downside, the bed was way too soft for my liking. Overall a good experience.
- Greg (8/5): - The room was nice and suited our needs. The staff downstairs in the restaurant were wonderful and helped us gain access to the inn and our room as it is a contactless checkin. We dined in the restaurant downstairs and had a fantastic meal.
- Emily (6/5): - The charm and history of the place makes up for what it lacks. It didn’t meet the standards of cleanliness and upkeep (dust bunnies on ceiling, sticky surfaces, the old style doorknob came off when I pulled on it to shut the door, the radiator was also noisy (air leak.. had to screw it shut a few times). The room needs a deep clean. BUT the sheets and linens were very clean and smelled good, and the bathroom and shower was great. We also enjoyed the records (thanks!). You have all that you need there, but you’re on your own. The place is managed remotely, meaning a minimum amount of work to keep it running—I get it. The coffee/tea station in the hallway was serviceable (I used the kettle since I brought my own aeropress)… didn’t bother trying to figure out their coffee machine. The bed with pillowtop is good for one but extremely squeaky for two, and very very soft. We were there the night the tavern was closed, but I’m sure their food is the best in the town. Thanks for the stay.
- John (9/5): Character property, memorable experience. - Loved fire in room. Friendly staff and overall ambience. Great bar and bar food. Nothing all good.
- Timothy (10/5): - A wonderful atmosphere and pleasantly attentive staff! One of the most accommodating stays in the Adirondacks! This was my 3rd time there and seems to get better each time!
- Lynelle (6/5): - Unique....shower very small and bed not comfortable..
- Colin (4/5): Look elsewhere - The room is in terrible condition. Floors, desk, tiles in bathroom, nearly every surface was sticky...bad. My wife thinks it's from what they clean with. Unknown. Sloped floors, dirty bathroom grout, no light in shower. Poor lighting in the bathroom. Old, old and needs updating. Bed was good. But the rest, blah. Oh and the doorknob fell off when we pulled it...pretty much sums it up.
- Marilou (8/5): - Stayed here one night as part of a long trip, just another stopping point. Was excited to NOT be in a chain hotel and happy to experience a 200-year-old property. It really is like an antiquated inn in some ways -- no TV or hairdryer (but there was a mini-fridge). On the other hand, totally modern contact-less check-in and out. Actually kind of weirdly impersonal for such an intimate environment. I would have loved to have had a conversation with owners or otherwise learned more history of the place. Room was cute, spacious, and fun, clearly hipster-owned, bed very comfortable. The main draw is the restaurant, which was very good. Dogs stay free, a rare treat, and are welcome at restaurant on front porch, which has heat lamps, but wear layers as mountain nights are cool. It's definitely a nice find in the Adirondacks.
- Mark (10/5): - Quiet and quaint and a relaxing atmosphere.
- Michael (8/5): - Easy check in. Room was comfortable and clean. Really liked the record player in the room. We did not have dinner this time, but the restaurant is quite popular and the food is always very nice.
- Daniel (2/5): Why Bother. - It was a nice location and ir was close to my corperate work making work travel easy. I left my jacket there that ment alot to me. My wife picked it out and my late grandfather approved of it, because it reminded him of his farming days. I have left a voicemail. Talked to a waitress while i was working a store of mine nearby. And nothing. I know it was there. So it looks like it was stolen. Which doesnt surprise me for this area. I would not recommand this area to my family, relatives, or any immediate friends. Sometimes people have to rush because they have work requirements. But to steal peoples stuff? I guess i should have expected better.
- Micaela (8/5): Funky, comfy, clean space for a short stay. - Funky fun layout with main room queen bed for my husband and me and separate space with futon for my teenage daughter. Nice bathroom with great toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc). Many books to peruse (and keep if inclined) in common areas; old school record player and collection of lps to enjoy in our room. Extra fan and extra quilts provided. Exceptionally clean! Note: Enjoyed dinner at the restaurant— outstanding food and service!! Window a/c unit was noisy and not very efficient at cooling the whole “suite” (hence the fan). Stairs to rooms are steep, walls are thin. But hey, the building has been around awhile ;-)
- Darrell (4/5): - The room was hotter than Haiti and the little window ac didn't coolit much. Not sure if there was a fire we would survive.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Clean and rustic! - There was an extra sitting room. The place was clean and the bed was comfortable. The contactless check in was very smooth. Convenient location and the food at the restaurant was excellent!
- Emily (8/5): - The rooms are funky and cool with lots of space. We especially enjoyed the record player.
- Bernd (7/5): Quirky and Quaint, with a nice restaurant for supper! - Quaint little studio, with one queen and a small couch, record player and stack of albums, and free paper backs on shelves in the room. Quirky decor, but still kind of cool. Restaurant was packed for a Monday night, with great smells, and an interesting menu. Good location next to a grocery store, and on the main street. A/C struggled to keep up, shower was small, and there was no included breakfast. Bag drag up the stairs as the building was too old for an elevator.
- Todd (2/5): - I can tell you if you stay here avoid room #3. We arrived after a very long day around 9:30pm and walked into the bathroom of our room to find the toilet was leaking onto the floor and constantly running. I texted the owner who didn’t respond right away so we used towels and dried the floor and I tried to fix the bulb in the back of the toilet so the sound would stop .
We then went to bed shortly afterwards only to be awaken by what I believe was the kitchen staff of the restaurant around midnight being really loud for the next 30 minutes or so. It sounded like their work night was over and they were just hanging out in the kitchen area which was right underneath us. We were exhausted to the point of just wishing for quietness. It was around that same time the toilet starting running again which it then did on and off every 30 seconds or so the rest of the night making all kinds of loud and interesting sounds. We closed the door to the bathroom but could still hear it.
So one would think this has to be the end to this nightmare but no I wouldn’t want to forget that we were suddenly awoken to the sounds of a large dog barking in the room next to us (where a full time tenant lives ) at 6:30 am!! We had enough at this point so we packed our bags and left around 7:15 am. This 10 hour nightmare is available for the price of $210.00 including taxes and fees. I did reach out to the owner after we left yesterday explaining everything that happened and he did not respond.
- Joe (8/5): Very good - No TV.
- Patricia (10/5): - Love The Deer’s Head Inn- stay here about four times a year/ great food, decor, and hospitality!
- Bungie (10/5): Great time and can't wait to stay here again. - We so enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Staff was very helpful.
- Laura (10/5): - Beautiful historic inn! We loved all the books and albums! Having a grocery store next door was convenient. Elizabethtown was a short drive to other towns and hiking trails. We loved the beauty of the region and hope to return!
- Jeanne (10/5): - Great!
- Cody (10/5): - I didn’t really interact with any staff or really anyone as I was out mountain climbing all day and went straight to the room and didn’t leave until I checked out. I did like the contactless check in. You can go straight to your room upon arrival. I was also happy to see a private bathroom in my room. I’m sure it was mentioned in the listing but with small inns like this sometimes that’s not the case.
- jamey (10/5): - Excellent food and hospitality!
- J (8/5): - Parking is an unknown, I never know where I am supposed to park when I stay here.
- Terri (8/5): Historic inn, good value close to Lake Placid - The Inn is an inexpensive alternative to Lake Placid resorts for folks who might want to ski the next day. Our room was clean and had what we needed. We liked staying in a historical place (built in 1808). The tavern downstairs had a tasty dinner. The record player in the room was a nice touch. Bathroom door didn't close very well, but perhaps that is a consequence of an 1808 building.
- Frank (4/5): - Price was to high for not having parking and not tv to watch
- Shiho (10/5): - Beautiful and comfortable!
- Lalit (8/5): Very good -
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Great on-property bar and restaurant. Modern rooms.
- Jennifer (10/5): Wonderful stay - The room was super cute, cozy and clean with thoughtful little touches. And the tavern had outstanding food and drinks. We would definitely stay here again!
- Shireen (10/5): - Good in tavern is superb! Charming room with vinyls and a turntable. Nothing modern about the overnight. Fun to go retro!!
- George (8/5): Very good - Restaurant very good. Room of a good size, but the condition a little disappointing. Par for the course in an old house converted to an inn, I expect.
- Pamala (10/5): - If you like it quiet and comfy and need time to yourself or with your special someone this is your place.
- L (8/5): Very good - Always enjoy having dinner in the Tavern. Great meal and great staff. Theresa was an attentive waitress. Very pleasant. You are so conveniently located for the work I do with the museum. Other patrons were found past 10. I could not figure out the new coffee machine but I needed to go out early anyway.
- Earl (10/5): - Excellent restaurant at Inn.
- Steve (9/5): Superb - Was disappointed the restaurant was not open
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - Nice idividual rooms. Great restaurant
- Annmarie (8/5): Fair stay for the price. - Arrived on a Saturday night and there was a very lively crowd, live music, and food. I was really just looking for a place to rest when booking here and it was good for that. Everything quited down by around 10:30-11. You can hear everything outside of the room so much as a cough down stairs. There was no secondary lock on the door. The furniture and bedding was slightly stained. The hot water takes about 5 minutes to get to the room. There is no breakfast here and it was difficult to find a breakfast spot in the area. All of that said this is a good place to stay for someone whos looking to dance, drink and crash. Not ideal for a great nights rest.
- Comer (10/5): - A historic property in a rural community. Thankfully, the restaurant is excellent, not only for the food, but as there is literally NO other option in town, less a tiny deli/pizzeria and prepackaged food from a nearby grocery and a gas station. The room was spacious, and the bath had been updated. Overall, very satisfactory.
- Deborah (9/5): Superb -
- Hinako (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (4/5): - As advertised, this is a unique, quirky inn. However, it was more “rustic” than pictured - small, almost unfinished bathroom, and very thin walls. Biggest complaint is that listing advertised that it had bar/cafe/restaurant. None of these were open and neither was any of the two or three options in this tiny town. We contacted the owner and he suggested we drive 10 miles down the road to a small pub. It was fortunately open, however out of several items as they were nearing the end of the season. We had driven all day and had looked forward to a nice dinner. Inn is decent if you are not expecting much. Did not earn the rating you gave it.
- Amanda (8/5): Great place! - I would definitely stay here again. Check in was seamless and amenities offered were great. Really enjoyed the high quality toiletries in the bathroom.
- Connie (10/5): - Beautiful rooms in a great location. The restaurant has amazing food. Owner Rob is super helpful and attentive. Highly recommend
- Maria (10/5): - Charming building. Room was very spacious and clean.while the building was one of the oldest in the town, the bathroom was completely modern and I loved it!
- Sabria (2/5): - You can hear everything through the walls. Hair stuck in the towels and shower. Let owners know. The towels appeared clean but still.. hair. No other linens available in room. No clean towels offered.
- Cheryl (10/5): - Nice place, dinner was awesome, very good server (Helena) was great and knew her menu! Room was good, older place but well equipped with everything you may need!
- David (8/5): Stay - No tv, no clock, winow AC considerably noisy
Easy check in, excellent restaurant
- Christian (10/5): Amazing value for the location, unique/local charm, and great restaurant downstairs - Great location- we got in pretty late and Aaron and the team downstairs kindly seated us at the restaurant near the end of their night. Room was spacious- great décor. Had fun looking through the records. Was on a hiking trip with a friend, will definitely be back with my wife.
- Katherine (5/5): Disappointing - Neat, funky atmosphere with the record player downstairs and in your room. Great location right next to Tops and Stewart's and not far from some key trail heads. Apparently the bar is open Wednesday - Saturday or Sunday but we were there on a Tuesday and did not experience this. Not clean - the bed sheet had a pink makeup stain (we didn't have any makeup) but we were so tired that we didn't realize until the morning. Also there was a dead bug on the floor which makes you question when it was cleaned last.
Not comfortable - the mattress was horrible. It was so warped out of shape, who knows how old it was. There was basically a dent where your shoulders and back should be, and if you try to sleep with your head the other way, you are so slanted so downhill it's uncomfortable. Also, since it's an old house the walls are thin and you can hear other people who are staying there doing... things. The lights were kinda weird because they took a few seconds to fully turn on, but also despite there being a dimmer slider, they don't dim. Our room (double bed with a couch) was also right on the road so if you are sensitive to cars driving by, be aware you will hear some. It's a small town though, so it's pretty quiet.
It felt like a cheap AirBnb, not an inn - We didn't meet the hosts, there was a key pad on the Inn door and on our room door so we just got the codes.
For the price, we'd expect better all around.
- Wendy (10/5): - This place is so cool! Listening to Jethro Tull’s greatest hits on the record player and reading brings me back to child hood cottage days! Super easy to find and very cool decor! Love it!
- Salviu (8/5): Good place to stay - Old house - tried (and did succeed) to make it as comfortable as possible.
Good choices if dining there.
Not much noise after evening Spicy prices but relevant given location/area nearby
- William (10/5): Deer Head - Older property, very basic accommodations.
Quiet, clean, easy access to Route 87.
- Jennifer (8/5): A good place for an overnight in the ADKS, with easy drive to Lake Placid and beyond. - Wonderful bed/mattress (in deluxe double room). Nice room but both sides overlooking parking lots, and some traffic noise until about 10. Bar drinks good but food a bit mixed (but wait staff excellent).
- Lynne (8/5): Pleasant and comfortable stay in a renovated inn. We enjoyed the 'quirkiness' of the inn. - We liked that Room 3 had 2 rooms so our 13 yr old son could have his 'own' room with the futon bed. Loved the record player! Bathroom was larger than we had expected. Wished breakfast was available as well as a ceiling fan in the main bedroom as the a/c was just adequate enough to cool off the 2 rooms.
- Richard (10/5): Great value - It was a great place to stay. We had a huge room. Our dogs were comfortable. The food in the restaurant below was exceptional. This is no Holiday Inn but staying a quaint historical old fashion Inn it is.
- Kristen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aaron (8/5): Comfortable for a few nights! - Really lovely spot to stay if you're looking for a more affordable Lake Placid option! Nice mattress and pillows, big spacious bathroom, only a window unit for AC though so be prepared, it was very hot when we stayed. Responsive staff too.
- Patrick (7/5): Good -
- Charlotte (10/5): Excellent stay in the Adirondacks with great hospitality and food - We loved the property - great rooms, comfortable bed, cool decor - having the record player and loads of records was also really fun. Good shower and toiletries. Coffee machine in the corridor made a great cup. Rob the owner was so friendly and helpful with information about local places for breakfast and hiking - thoroughly enjoyed his recommendations. The bar and restaurant are top notch - good array of beers on fraught, excellent cocktails, great wait staff and really tasty food. We just wish we stayed longer ! Thanks again - we will be back ! Nothing really - only tiny thing was no where to hang towels.
- Ginger (10/5): - Record players and records in the room!
- Artem (10/5): - Lovely quiet hotel with history and interesting hidden perks
- Catherine (10/5): - The owners have done a nice job of renovation this unique inn. It is funky, clean, and comfortable. I loved the extra sitting room/porch. The restaurant and bar downstairs were convenient but not noisy.
- GAIL (10/5): - Quaint place!
- Thomas (7/5): Good -
- Rivera (10/5): Exceptional -
- Doug (8/5): - I stayed at the Deer's Head Inn during a weekend of enjoying the World University Winter Games in Lake Placid. The price was good for an inn near Lake Placid. The room was very clean, the bed was reasonably comfortable, and the shower worked well, but it was more spartan than the room shown in the picture. The extra touches like the herbal soaps and coffeemakers were nice. The Inn has an interesting atmosphere, like a mix of Germany and Woodstock. The lack of places to get breakfast in Elizabethtown is a bit of a problem, but the diners in Keene Valley and wide variety of restaurants in Lake Placid are only 15-20 minutes away. The dinner menu at the Inn looked good, but I had dinner in Lake Placid that night. I would consider staying at the Deer's Head Inn again when I travel to the Lake Placid area on my own, and maybe enjoy the books and LP records next time.
- Lisa (7/5): Good - The room was clean and well decorated. The walls were thin. We could hear the folks in the adjacent room snoring. Also, the heater situation was not the best.
