Guest Reviews
- Dalia (10/5): -
- MARIA (10/5): The perfect stay. - Perfect setting.
Very clean environment, very welcoming staff.
- Hripsime (10/5): -
- Gregory (10/5): -
- Janine (10/5): Absolutely wonderful! Too short but just what we needed. - Everything! Hands down the best accommodations I’ve ever stayed in. The staff, the property, the rooms, the gardens, the amenities, the location and the food were all 5 star. I would absolutely book again. It is on the pricier side but gives good value for your money.
- Giles (9/5): Truly memorable! - Wow - what a gorgeous ryokan! We had two rooms for our family of four and were blown away by both when entering each room. The view of the garden is amazing. The decor, the spaciousness, the calmness and the amazing bathroom. We stayed here for one night and wish we could have stayed longer. Yes, the traditional breakfast was, err, traditional and may require a degree of adventurousness for some. In the evening, we strolled down the road for 5 minutes and devoured the best (wagyu) burgers in the world at Dragon Burger (they close early at 8pm). Upon returning to the hotel, we enjoyed a peaceful walk around the ryokan's beautiful garden - not to be missed. All in all, though, an incredibly memorable stay all round and one of the best places we've stayed in! Only slight niggle is the bed and pillows were a little hard and the daylight blasted in from one of the bedroom windows (as there were no blinds/curtains on it).
- Paul (7/5): Great location and room. -

- Launi (10/5): - Beautiful rooms with a spectacular Japanese garden setting. Staff were excellent.
- Margaret (10/5): A superb stay - Beautiful garden, delicious breakfasts, lovely room overlooking the garden, the tranquility, the location - I loved everything about it! Memorable and worth the splurge. There was nothing I didn’t like.

- Bonnie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emily (10/5): - Everything was great!
- Amanda (10/5): the most perfect place for us in Kyoto - The hotel is absolutely delightful. The food is exquisite and the rooms super stylish and comfortable. The Japanese garden at the back is trolley beautiful and the staff are unbelievably helpful and welcoming. It is a gorgeous, quiet neighbourhood, next to a temple and the philosophers walk which leads to another temple as well as major museums and also very convenient for the local metro which we used to get around. nothing really we loved it - nit picking the corridor/stiars up to the room poss needs a bit of TLC.
- Jennifer (10/5): Relax - Classic transition building, beautiful garden
- Naoko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Huda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional - It's a high-end place but it was worth every penny. Everything about it was beautiful and uplifting. The breakfast was absolutely incredible. We felt cared for at all stages. All the staff took pride in the place and in making out stay comfortable and memorable. It was a delight to come home to the room at the end of a busy day sightseeing and I slept really well. Nothing! We didn't want to leave.
- Thomas (10/5): Wonderful - glad we stayed there. Made our visit to Kyoto special! -
- Matt (10/5): Perfect stay with an authentic experience - The location was perfect, the breakfast was delicious, the staff was incredibly friendly, and the room was much bigger than anticipated. Tough to think of any constructive feedback for Kikusui. We would highly recommend!
- Kristen (10/5): Incredible place near the most beautiful Zen temples of Nanzenji and Eikando, so green and vivid! - Wow, what unbelievable stay we just had at this beautiful place, I would highly recommend anyone wanting to zen out for a wee while which i must say was needed after a few busy days in Gion this is the perfect place for that. Nothing, I thought we me be a little out of the way but the Taxi into Gion was 10 minutes and only about $10 USD.
- Donald (9/5): Superb - Beautiful location and garden serenity calm nice room
- Rachael (10/5): Gorgeous Ryokan For a Relaxing Stay In Kyoto - My husband and I had a short stay for our honeymoon and the ryokan did not disappoint. The staff was fantastic and the meals were exceptional. Come hungry... both breakfast and dinner were 10 courses!
- Sydney (10/5): Overall, a relaxing experience with high-quality customer service. - Truly a 5-star experience with a beautiful facility and friendly staff. My husband and I stayed here for 1 night and it was the most romantic night on our 2 week honeymoon trip. The room was immaculate with a phenomenal view of the private garden. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast thoughtfully served. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city or chaotic vacation schedules. It was a bit pricey and there was no onsen or spa services available. This was also not located near many restaurants that were open late, so be sure to plan out your meals.
- Zheng (9/5): Superb -
- Nelson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rachael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Scudiere (10/5): Excellent stay. Experience to last a lifetime. - Gorgeous grounds and gardens. The staff were attentive and friendly. The meals were very good and filling. Clean beautiful room with an extra large bathtub. So many amenities, it was a joy to stay here.
- Jacqueline (10/5): Perfect for a romantic splurge while exploring Kyoto. - Incredibly beautiful gardens and rooms. We also enjoyed a wonderful kaiseki meal and breakfast. Nothing!
- Kat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kanika (10/5): Exceptional - A quiet luxury in Kyoto. Gorgeous rooms and even more beautiful garden. Recommend the lunch so you can enjoy the garden views. Highly recommend. The location is different and would recommend mapping out your Kyoto activities accordingly. We split our Kyoto stay between here and Gion so it was perfect.
- Nouf (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lutfi (10/5): Amazing spot, wonderful staff. Would definitely recommend! - Beautiful and tranquil property with a wonderful garden
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - Undeniably the best location in Kyoto, which is one of the most serene and beautiful places in the world. Simply put, this is literally one of the most beautiful places you can stay on the planet.
The staff is absolutely lovely, and a special thank you to Okita-san, who kindly helped me book reservations at nearby restaurants. I wish I never had to leave.
- Denise (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic location, extremely helpful staff, large and well appointed room, beautiful tranquil garden
- Tove (10/5): Tranquility and luxury - The staff was exceptionally nice. The room very comfortable with a view over the beautiful Japanese garden. It has a private bathroom and the room is very well equipped. The Japanese breakfast and dinner were both lovely and it was very interesting to try the different traditional foods. If you are not a big fan of fish eggs or sea urchin, please tell them that you would like to skip the first course. The restaurant is facing the garden and it is a treat eating here. Some ryokans can be quite cold in the winter. This was not the case here - we visited in January and it was comfortable and warm.
- Dale (10/5): The place to stay when you need tranquility and appreciate luxury. - Our rooms were overlooking the beautiful and tranquil gardens. The whole property exuded serenity and luxury. The staff were absolutely superb. We were able to enjoy our room with the wide range of beverages. The dinner was absolutely delectable. Even my teenage kids tasted everything. Not only were the dishes well presented, the food was heavenly. It was also a very short pleasant walk to nearby temples. I wished I could have stayed longer and booked the spa suite.
- Katrinehanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luna (10/5): Exceptional - perfect hotel
- Sa (10/5): High recommend to my friends! - Very much like it. Highly recommend
The location is good, right by temple. The hotel has a very beautiful garden. They also serve breakfast, which was the best that I had in Japan; and diner, which was also very nice.
Their facility, bathroom, all the services were excellent!
- Marissa (10/5): Exceptional - Room and service were exceptional. Everyone was so nice and helpful Nothing
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nachiket (10/5): - Amazing hospitality and attention to detail on all fronts. Catered a spectacular vegetarian breakfast feast.
- James (7/5): Great, quiet location. - Quiet. Nice garden. Would be great to have western breakfast option. And more easy access to help with restaurant reservations, taxis etc.
- Izhan (10/5): Amazing Ryokan with large beautiful rooms, wonderful food and extremely friendly & helpful staff. - Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, despite the language barrier. They always tried their best to make every aspect of our stay as pleasant as possible. The Luxury Spa Suite was amazing! Very spacious and the huge onsen was out of this world. We were traveling as a party of six and we got to dine in different private dining rooms in the property and each of them face a large and beautiful garden. The food served at breakfast and dinner was also superbly crafted and provided an amazing culinary experience for my family and I. I would HIGHLY recommend this Ryokan for anyone visiting Kyoto. The location is a little detached from the main attractions in Kyoto, apart from Nanzen-ji and Heian-jingu that are close by. We traveled to the city by taxi most times but there is an underground train station nearby (5 mins walk).
- Raquel (10/5): Tranquil and calming. - The room was spacious and beautiful. The bathtubs was very relaxing. The property was amazing and tranquil l.
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yiling (10/5): Exceptional -
- Harry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - While the price was up there, the stay was absolutely worth it. The room was huge, with so many exceptional amenities that made it certainly the best place we stayed in Japan. Everything was luxurious, from the bathroom, to the garden, the amazing food. The staff were able to help us with everything we needed even before we got there, such an amazing experience.
- Shi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Boris (2/5): never come back - a great old house the people who run the place are possibly nice, however it is a group of amateurs with no attempt to accommodate a westerner. I was 3 times in Japan, staying in various upscale places. This is a very different.
you have to play by their rules with a privilege paying almost $1000 USD per day. Even a dinner cancelled in am ( $300 USD extra charge), you will be charged for late pm booking anyway! nobody speaks English, except for a limited in command lady. So, the place is nice, but for 50% less you may find a much better deal.
I highly not recommend the place.
- Orta (10/5): a true Kyoto experience with the highest class service. - a true Kyoto experience. But, what stood out the most was the staff and their excellent service towards me. One of the best hotel experiences of my life. absolutely nothing. a must go!
- Min (10/5): Exceptional - we loved the location and the beautiful garden outlook and the relaxed spacious room with a lovely bath
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - everything: scenery, room, kind service , splendid garden construction noise was very unfortunate. drilling in the wall awful, if we knew it in advance we wouldn’t come because we chose this hotel for the reason to be in a quiet and peaceful area but it didn’t happen..
- Harry (10/5): A enchanting experience within history and design. - The building, garden, location and experience was magical. Everything was perfect.
- Enrique (10/5): Unforgettable. - Our stay was outstanding. The service and attention to detail on behalf of the staff was superb. The morning kaiseki style breakfast was a treat each day. Most of all the garden was immaculate and really reflected the quiet, peaceful atmosphere that the whole property exudes.
Our stay will not be forgotten and we truly wish we could have stayed longer.
- Arnaud (9/5): It is like going back in time for a moment. Amazing stay - The Ryokan is located at walking distance from the city center. It is a boutique hotel where customers are valued and taken care of. The staff can speak English well and is responsive to any demand.
it feels you are in the countryside in the middle of Kyoto… a rare gem ! Very difficult (and expensive) to book a taxi during the busy season. The property should strike a deal with a local taxi company as a service to clients.
- Haiying (8/5): Very good -
- Majella (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aksel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mahvish (10/5): Exceptional -
- Salim (10/5): Exceptional - Best place for an absolutely beautiful stay, I would highly recommend this place for a romantic trip!
- Michael (10/5): Luxury, traditional experience surrounded by peaceful mountains. - Picturesque from the first day we arrived, with snow falling in the courtyard garden outside our room. Traditional style quarters brought to the modern day with newly renovated bathroom and facilities made for a very comfortable stay. Memorable dining experience at the ryokan for breakfast and dinner in front of the traditional garden. Really enjoyed walking around the neighbourhood as well. Exceptional service even by Japanese standards. Slightly out of the way of the metro and public transportation to the central shopping and food areas. Lack of food around the area.
- Abobakr (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elaine (10/5): Exceptional - Every staff member with whom we came in contact was attentive. I and my husband really had a wonderful stay.
- Jonathan (10/5): Soul-reviving. - The room is spacious, the bath is magnificent, and the garden is wonderful -- one couldn't ask for a better view while enjoying a superb breakfast.
- Poh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (10/5): the best ryokan in Kyoto - the best ryokan in Kyoto
- CKP02 (6/5): Japanese dinner very delicious! - Visited this hotel in November 2019 and stayed 2 nights there.
The room was spacious but the blanket provided was heavy and the blanket cover made my skin felt very itchy. I was unable to sleep well for 1st night until I requested for changing of blanket cover on 2nd day morning then able to sleep on 2nd night.
The 1st night Japanese dinner was very impressive and super tasty. The dinner was served in a private room. The atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant.
For 2nd night, the hotel staff offered us to change to eat French food and ended quite disappointed. The place for dinner is their restaurant “Dinning” which is the same place for breakfast. The male staff who served us was poor in English. We asked for menu list for our dinner details and he could not understand at all. The French food taste was far below our expectation and the service was very slow. We should not accept the change from Japanese dinner to French dinner.
However, the hotel garden was beautiful during Autumn time.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cadre incroyable idéalement situé dans kyoto.
Chambres et jardin magnifiques.
Un des plus beaux endroits dans lequel nous soyons restés
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very quiet. Great location a short walk from Nanzenj and numerous other attractions in eastern Kyoto.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- CFW56 (10/5): Excellent Ryokan - The location is very close to the Nanzen-ji temple and a 5 minute walk from Keage station, which gives direct access to Gion. The setting is very tranquil. The garden is beautiful and the Ryokan itself is quiet. The staff were all very helpful and extremely nice. The food is absolutely great!!
- I9506RCmiket (10/5): Great experience - My wife and I stayed here for one night in early March 2017 -- just ahead of the cherry blossom season. This was our first stay in a ryokan and Kikusui made it a memorable experience.
As this was tourist low season, we were literally the only guests in the ryokan. We had a delicious kaiseki meal and the whole bath to ourselves.
Employees were wonderful. They held our bags the next day while we explored Kyoto on foot.
The garden and environs were beautiful. I loved walking through the garden at night, listening to the carp in the little pond. They make a weird barking noise that I've never noticed before from fish.
Sitting in front of the open window with the breeze coming in, drinking tea, after a hot soaking bath is a heavenly feeling. I hadn't felt that relaxed in ages.
We would definitely come back here.
- Sal_JH_NY (10/5): Unique luxury experience of a life time! - In April 2016, a two-night pricey splurge in Kikusui proved that ryokan experience is indeed an absolute must on a trip to Japan. Luxury you expect in a high end boutique hotel, but personalized in a very special way. In Kikusui, attention was given to every minute detail of presentation and service. After a pleasant 10-minute walk from Keage subway station (not precisely shown on Google Maps' walking path... the ryokan is on a side street), we were warmly greeted at the entrance, our shoes taken and were escorted thru a maze of corridors to our room on the second floor. Our luggage had astonishingly arrived in the room by then. Timings for dinner and breakfast were agreed on (they tend to be early). This was followed by a welcome matcha service with sweets.
Room was actually a suite that had a niche separated by sliding doors and with a set of chairs and table. The niche had beautiful garden view with some peeks of distant buildings and occasional traffic noise from a back alley. This is a lovely space to relax, read and have drinks. The room itself had a big table in the center with traditional floor seating on carpet. The table would be moved to the side and replaced by futons when you come back after dinner. The room would go back to "daytime setup" when you come back after breakfast. The en-suite toilet and bathroom were small and basic. WiFi worked very well in the room, even better than in some hotel rooms we stayed in. We also spent some time in the traditionally landscaped garden (outdoor slippers are provided). We also took bath in the onsen. Located on the first floor, it is a large and clean facility. The source of water is not natural hot spring.
You have to be punctual with meal times. We would find an escort waiting outside the suite to take us to the dinning room (a different room for every meal!). We never shared dinning room with other guests. Also, they arranged meals in such a way that we never ran into other guests. We heard their murmurs though. Dinning rooms were big and elegant with traditional floor seating and garden views. The menu could be defined as "Kaiseki Ryori," i.e. traditional Japanese multi-course haute cuisine. Dinners had 8 courses (we counted), excluding rice, miso soup, pickles and fruits for dessert. Food was delicious but one has to appreciate Japanese food. Nothing wacky. We couldn't get more info about the dishes as our server spoke almost no English. Perhaps they sensed our keen interest in food and server of the next dinner spoke more English and we were able to get a few details. Every single plate was as beautiful as the food. Note that drinks are not included in the prepaid plan and have to be paid at check-out. Breakfast was traditional Japanese and very elaborate. I had the most perfectly poached egg of my life. A cup of coffee was provided when requested.
Another gesture of finest hospitality: Staff didn't just say good bye at the check-out, they took us to the street entrance to send us off and one of them stood there until we had walked away for some distance.
Try to to check-in at the earliest possible time and spend a good amount of time in the ryokan. Unlike for a routine hotel stay, you pay big money and should enjoy it to the fullest. We liked its slightly out of the way location as it compelled us to go only for local sightseeing and spend more time inside. While there, we visited major sights in north eastern Kyoto. Nanzen-ji Temple, right after breakfast -- when the temple complex was devoid of crowds and its gardens were serene, followed by a walk on the Philosopher's Path, ending up at the Ginkaku-ji Temple. In one of the afternoons, we visited the Kyoto Handicraft Center, which is 20 minutes walk away.
- JamesK5329 (10/5): Luxury Ryokan, a delight in Kyoto - traditional Ryokan... where very little english is spoken but go.. and be enchanted! Stayed in the main building, the only let-down was the onsen -traditional bath was very very modern. You are segregated in the bath although we went as a family. The kaiseki meal is a must.. why else will you come here. The breakfast is traditional Japanese and gi-normous! The service is impeccable and finally the environment within the ryokan -the gardens and nearby the shrine and other areas... just go and stay (one night at least)!
- E518WVpaulh (10/5): Stay at kikusui may 2014 - We stayed at the kikusui which is a traditional Ryokan.
To say something about ourselves, we speak little to no Japanese but have traveled a good bit.
We had a very good stay in kikusui. We think this was as close to the real Japanese old ways as you can get, we also think this way is fast vanishing/changing. Few Japanese now eat meals while sitting on the floor. Also the bed is on the floor, but the room has the modern toilet and wash basin and bath ensuite. Just to add, please try the communal traditional baths in the basement as well. Wash before you get in the bath.
Food, this Ryokan has the highest reputation for this, which we think is deserved.
The room comes with breakfast and dinner both of which are expensive in japan.
But do not expect west food, there is no choice the day before the cook/management tried to discuss food in general terms but our poor Japanese did not help.
There are a lot of courses to the meal, what we did was try it all, if we did not like it we just left it 95% we managed. A lot of fish and rice. No western food so if you go to Kikusui be prepared, this is not for everyone. We would not have missed this for the world.
Just a point this is like a Japanese house, take your shoes off at the door.
Also, service was impeccable.
- JChua (8/5): Our detached house in Kyoto! - Trying to find a ryokan in Kyoto that has a detached house (hanare in Japanese) with reasonable pricing and good location, finally found this ryokan near Nanjenji. Though there wasn't any review for it, I took the plunge and faxed them my enquiry five/six months ahead.
Was offered their biggest detached house, Sakura, for about 70,000 yen a night, with 2 meals for 2 persons. The second night, we chose to have only breakfast, and the room rate was merely 55,000 yen. Compared to higher end ryokans like Kinmata, Yoshida Sanso (see my other reviews) and Yoshikawa Inn - this is much better value for your money.
Our secluded detached house was huge in size (about 14-16 tatami mats excluding balcony), with its separated bath and WC. It also has a big balcony, facing the ryokan's medium sized garden. On first impression, the house looks a little worn here and there, garden not too well tendered to, but we soon realised it was really comfy here to have a two good night's sleep.
In peak autumn season, the ryokan (situated on a side road from the main road leading to the famed Nanjenji) can be a little noisy during the day with some traffic noises. But once night falls, when the temple closes, it was blissfully quiet and we slept well especially with its two large, ceiling mounted air-conditioner/warmer.
Every morning, we were treated to an exceptionally good breakfast, at a nearby Unagi tea house - small but really cute looking with its own pond and stone lantern. We then hopped over to Nanjenji well before the tour buses of students and tourists arrived - so much so that we almost had the whole place to ourselves!
From Nanjenji, we also strolled to nearby Eikando Temple, a must visit, as well as the renowed, Philosopher's Walk. The ryokan is also close to a Kyoto International Community House, where you could relax and watch English TV, have western/French food at its cafe/restaurant, surf the internet (200 yen for 30 minutes), read the papers or simply to gather more tour info about Japan. Walk 5 minutes, and you will come across the Keage JR station, for easy access to whole of Kyoto.
Dinner was also great, but not overly so. The ryokan has its own separated male and female baths, which we didn't use since there is no hotspring mineral water in downtown Kyoto. We use our private baths instead. There is a large flat screen LCD TV in our hanare, however, there is no English channel as the ryokan caters mainly to local Japanese customers.
Now, the not so good about this ryokan. Staff could hardly speak English, fortunately, I could manage simple phrases. But each and every one of them is friendly and helpful. Surprisingly, there was no kettle or tea/coffee making facilities in the room. I though most Japanese hotels or ryokans would have it, but not here? And lastly, there is no room key for the hanare ...!
Overall, this discreet and not overly exposed ryokan is a good place to stay if you want to be close to sights in the Higashiyama area. You will be glad to learn that this ryokan, unlike the better known Yachiyo ryokan, which is just next to it and located on the main street leading to Nanjenji and is often jammed with cars and tourists/students walking around it, is so much more private and secluded.
The ryokan also has a main three storey building, with rooms that come with better views and probably a tad cheaper, if you are not looking at having a detached house to call your own. For us, nothing beats having a private bungalow to call home.
