Guest Reviews
- Rosalind (9/5): - Very comfortable and relaxing hotel with excellent facilities and friendly service. The walk to the beach was a bit precarious due to lack of a pavement.
- Alan (5/5): -
- Gerrit (8/5): Prima nacht gehad. - Schoon en netjes. Rustig. Niets.
- Jean (8/5): - Very clean, nicely decorated, friendly staff. Lovely lounge/conservatory area to relax in. Short time slot re breakfast (8a.m - 8.45a.m) though that does not mean you had to have finished eating by 8.45a.m. Would have liked to have been able to check in a bit earlier. These though really were minor niggles up to the overall experience.
- NICHOLAS (9/5): -
- Anne (9/5): - Lovely, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere in the hotel. Well placed for exploring Sidmouth. Food wad very good.
- Karen (8/5): -
- HELEN (4/5): Dog friendly ??? - As it was advertised as dog friendly i assumed i wouldn't need to check ( OK my mistake )
However although I fully expect to pay a fee for my dog and have no problem with that but i object that having a dog means the only rooms available are the premier rooms with costs an extra £60 as well as the £15 dog fee which resulted in an extra £75 that I'd not budgeted for

- 328ianb (10/5): An exceptional hotel stay on the South West coastal path hike. - Quintessentially family run hotel with wonderful hosts Megan and Dan who took care of us exceptionally. We really enjoyed our stay and would strongly recommend the hotel for long stays (I think you’d feel like family) as well as overnight - we were hiking the Coastal Path.
- Angie (9/5): Relaxed, switched off and watching the chickens in the gardens was great fun! - Great location and very friendly hosts.
- Guest (10/5): -
- Joan (8/5): - Convenient position and comfortable accommodation. Friendly staff.
- Debra (10/5): - Comfortable, friendly staff, convenient position for town and exploring
- jim (10/5): A paradise. - Just everything. N/a
- Claire (8/5): A very pleasant stay. - The room and gardens were beautiful . Liked the honesty box in the conservatory bar. The bed was very hot as the duvet was too thick.
- Peter (9/5): Great Hotel - Good location. Friendly and efficient service. Nothing.
- Richard (9/5): -
- nick339 (10/5): Early break - My wife and I visited Woodlands hotel for a two night break in April 2026. We loved the hotel, everything was just lovely, the room, the very comfy bed, the staff, the breakfast, the decor, the garden, the chickens, the self service bar, the conservatory, we could not fault anything. The owner Dan was soo friendly, we will be visiting again.
- Rachel (10/5): Perfectly independant. - Everything its beautiful and independant. Nothing i didnt like.
- Jef Stone (10/5): -
- Jo (8/5): Well located for accessing beach and shops - Liked the hotel’s proximity to beach .
Very quiet .
Beds were really comfy and shower was excellent . Parking was limited but we managed to find a space .
- Jeremy (9/5): Very restful, relaxing and comfortable with good food and pleasant surroundings. - Comfortable room with a lovely view of the garden - very clean and was well maintained during our stay. Excellent breakfast and staff were very helpful. Overall a delightful stay. Nothing comes to mind.
- Pam (10/5): As above the whole stay was excellent as well as the food! - The whole experience was excellent, the owners very friendly and helpful as are the staff. The evening meal and breakfast were both exceptional. Room and bathroom very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend a stay at The Woodlands Hotel!

- Helen (9/5): Great night away , comfy bed , great room - Breakfast was great , conservatory was great we sat 5here and played cards in the evening supplied by the hotel honesty bar was good as we could just get what we required, problem with heater in room , quickly sorted out , very helpful and friendly hosts will be going back Nothing
- Paul (10/5): -
- Nigel (8/5): Friendly hosts and a lovely garden. Would stay here again. - Location is good and the bed was super comfy. Breakfast was limited. One of everything and the bacon was barely cooked. A good sausage would really help rather than the skinny chipalata!!
Poached egg on toast should be 2 eggs by default.
Parking is limited so get there early.
- Grahamk55 (8/5): Lovely short break - Lovely on arrival - building is interesting and a friendly greeting. Very comfy room - small, but we were offered a larger room at only a slight extra charge. Good breakfast, with an excellent choice of fruit. Eggs - presumably from the many hens in the garden, lovely to watch. Parking. Good recommendations for evening meal. The hotel is quite large, so felt empty, but it was out of season

- Frank Mccarthy (8/5): Comfortable boutique hotel - The location was excellent. The ambience was friendly and relaxing. The bedroom was warm, well furnished and had all the facilities expected of a modern boutique hotel. Breakfast was very good with a good choice of items on the menu well cooked and served by friendly and helpful staff. There was an embarrassing confusion caused by Booking.com, with the hotel being quoted a different price from me. Thankfully the hotel were happy to honour the lower price. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel as it had a fixed price 3 course menu and we would like a main course only.
- Alipath (10/5): Outstanding Hotel - Excellent hotel . One of the best . Owners and staff were extremely friendly and helpful . Room was great clean spacious and the bed was so comfortable . Breakfast was extensive and super tasty ...full English for me of outstanding quality . Took my dog and it is extremely dog friendly . Would not hesitate to recommend .
- John (8/5): Welcoming and comfortable - Very good shower.
Excelent full breakfast, quickly served.
Very comfortable bed. No bath.
Internet programs breaking up on TV
- ANTHONY (8/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): All the staff were fab - really enjoyed having a good natter with them & seemed a happy team - All good
- Elizabeth (10/5): Relaxing and stress free with excellent hosts. - Exceptionally clean, well cared for and tastefully decorated.
- George (9/5): - Car parking
- PETER (9/5): -
- PHILIP (10/5): If we needto visit Sidmouth again - it was a stop to Dartmouth - we'd go to the Woodlands. - Our allocated room was spacious with a very large shower in the en-suite. It was in a quite part of town with very easy access to the centre, restaurants and other visitor attractions.
It was superbly clean and consumables like milk & tea etc were replenished during breakfast.
The breakfast was full and hearty. With free range chickens in the rear gardens these looked to be indicators of the quality and freshness of the breakfasts we tried.
The staff were highly professional and attentive at all times. I believe we got the last on-site parking slot on arrival with Megan & Dan providing grateful assistance.
- Derek (9/5): - Everything was very good
- Ian (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Excellent evening meal, friendly staff and convenient to town and sea front. Nice to see the chickens in the garden. No complimentary biscuits.
- Sarah (10/5): - The owners and staff were most welcoming and helpful. There was nothing i didnt like.
- Jenny (10/5): Very peaceful, great location. - Breakfast was lovely with good choices of cereals, fruit was fresh and delicious and cooked breakfast was of an high standard. All good
- Barrie (7/5): - Very nice property, room was ok but bathroom too small, breakfast was ok but times were restrictive and it was too regimented.
- Paul (9/5): Very friendly staff and a lovely stay. - Welcome to the hotel was warm and room was great. Breakfast was excellent. Nothing
- Wendy (9/5): - Breakfast was very good quality ingredients, good choice, lovely staff and piping hot.
- Georgina (10/5): Interesting building, beautiful stay. - Lovely breakfast, room and building.
- Lydia (8/5): If you're looking for tranquility, quiet and privacy, in a mature atmosphere, this is a great hotel. - It has loads of comfortable relaxing lounging areas for sitting, reading or just relaxing. The decor is cozy and warm. It has a quiet ambience, with sort of 'at home' feel to it. The breakfast was very good.
Amy, the owner's daughter was very kind and generous in occupying my small very active grandchildren who were visiting with me at the hotel for the afternoon. The hotel has a large very pretty garden area , where they keep a few chicken at the back of it. She let the kids play with her chickens, feeding them etc. She even gave them a few eggs to take home.. she kept the kids quite busy, whilst the parent and I had an afternoon tea. That was exceptionally kind of her. My room was a it noisy in the mornings. But that was because the maid's supply closet happen to be just across from my room. Every morning there was a bit rustling about outside my room. But this was avery minor issue. Next time I would not have that particular room.
- Matthew (9/5): Very good location and lovely room, with a good breakfast. - The room was lovely. A good size, and clean. the breakfast was also very nice. We would have liked more flexibility around the check-in time. We arrived around noon and requested a check in as early as possible but was told they could only do around 30 minutes earlier than the normal 4pm.
- Catherine (10/5): -
- Robert (8/5): comfortable and satisfactory - It was all as I expected plus a very nice garden. attitude
- Susan (10/5): Perfectly relaxing - Location was perfect, quite central to the sea front , easy access , staff were amazing , nothing too much trouble . Lovely spacious rooms , stunning facilities Nothing.
- milner (10/5): - Accommodation was fine breakfast lacked a certain finesse (tinned mushrooms and under cooked tomatoes)
- Tonicha (8/5): Great hotel, lovely staff, would reccomend! - Very good location, short walk to seafront, nice to be away from the busier area, great to have parking available too as not all hotels in sidmouth have parking.
Breakfast was lovely, staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much for them. Bed was comfortable, room and hotel was clean, fans were available at desk as room was warm. Parking can be a little tight of a squeeze if you’re not a confident driver, but we managed fine and past reviews state that staff are happy to help if you are struggling.
Bathrooms were rather small, but had everything you needed in them
- Ian (9/5): A very enjoyable visit. We will certainly stay again. (Peter & Ann - guests of Ian) - We were made to feel most welcome and even received an upgrade. Thank you so much.
- Tash (10/5): -
- stulew (10/5): Excellent in every way! - Excellent in every way! Met up with friends and this will now be a regular meet up place. Warm & friendly welcome by the owners. Spotlessly clean and staff very nice too. Beautiful hotel, quality furnishings and stylish decor. Rooms were spacious & cosy, excellent facilities, amazingly comfortable bed - absolutely everything thought of and catered for. Fabulous breakfast in lovely dining room - continental choices plus cooked food which was perfect, and good quality coffee too. Would wholeheartedly recommend. We intend to re-visit in the summer and enjoy the gardens and bright conservatory. We live fairly locally in Torquay, so ideal for us for a quick break. Thank you to the family and staff!
- Alison (9/5): -
- 847cathyh (10/5): Brilliant place and meal - Brilliant place a large group of us had our Christmas lunch here. The venue is clean warm homely and comfortable. I really enjoyed the food. The flavours were delicious and home cooked. It didn’t taste as though and processed food was used. Highly recommend the restaurant. They also do a curry night last Thursday in the month. Can’t wait to try it.
Thank you to Dan and meghan.
- VIVIEN (9/5): -
- fiona (10/5): Fantasic hotel - The staff were friendly and welcoming and the communcal space was very comfortable, Our room opened out onto the garden, which was lovely. We had a very comfy bed and room in general, decorated to a high standard. The breakfast in the morning was excellent, I would come again 100%! It was all great!
- Explore28504898342 (10/5): Lovely hotel - Nice location but still close to seafront. Owner very friendly and welcoming. Room comfy and other parts of hotel well laid out with good seating for relaxation. Would recommend and would visit again
- Amanda (8/5): Beautiful and historic hotel in a great location. - Beautiful hotel in a perfect location. Exceptionally clean and well maintained. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Brilliant to have free parking in a location like Sidmouth. Our only niggle was the early hour of breakfast (8am - 8.45am). However, this was clearly stated in the hotel information and so we were aware of this before booking.
- Lorraine (10/5): A fabulous home from home hotel with great service. - Great location.Super clean and homely and we enjoyed the pool table and honesty bar. Breakfast was great too!
- michael (8/5): Highly recommend - Extremely clean
Delicious evening meal and breakfast
Perfect location
- Harlan (10/5): Nice stay in a very nice hotel - Dan the owner was very welcoming and helpful
- Proffit (9/5): - Most comfortable bed and pillows I have found staying in hotels. Very homely and spacious No lift but this is an historic building
- Christine (8/5): -
- Barbara (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- Roland (10/5): - The meals were excellent, nice hotel, really good location, I really enjoyed my stay.
I also thought the hosts were great .
- jeremy (9/5): Ideal location, comfortable and homely. - Location and uniqueness N/A
- BeanandBird (8/5): Could be fab but a bit budget here and there - The good stuff: large room. Exceptionally clean everywhere. Breakfast cooked well and served very quickly and accurately. Nice to be able to open bedroom doors directly to garden and watch the chickens. Breakfast serving staff very pleasant. Amazing eggs from chickens roaming feee range in the garden. Short walk into town. Netflix/Prime etc on TV. Nice sofa area to sit near bar. Very interesting building and history. Quite relaxed feel overall. Car park ok and we have a large car so not sure why people have issues with it.
Less impressive: Breakfast choice limited to full English (and variations thereof)or kippers. Tinned fruit, apples, granola, yoghurt, cereal. Not much variation if you are staying for more than a night or two. Ingredients and jams etc are on the cheaper side.
Breakfast slot between 8-8.45 is early when on holiday. Not really a hotel, more like a large B&B. ‘Honesty bar’ has a price list and is help yourself. Not once asked if we had a nice day or a nice stay, even when paying bill. General interaction with guests by owner minimal. The owner grumbled about her husband and there was no smile, not once. Pillows hard or lumpy (we bring our own wherever we go anyway). Bed hard for us. Toiletries very basic. No body lotion or conditioner.
Felt a bit ‘budget’ in terms of provisions and furniture in conservatory not nice. This could be a fantastic area.
Owner pleasant upon arrival but showed us around in his trainers socks and no shoes?
Room one can have a little bit of conversation disturbance outside as it opens next to bar and seating area. It didn’t bother us but might be an issue for some.
Overall a nice stay as lots and lots to do in the region but I don’t think we would return to the Woodlands.
- Fiona (10/5): Perfection - Everything Nothing
- James (7/5): Excellent host and hostess! Great for a short break! - Clean, welcoming, comfortable bed, nice staff , good breakfast and convenient location. Traffic noise in the morning as room was at the front . Limited parking.
- Williams (10/5): Very pleasant stay short break - Felt at home warm reception lovely room Rates good value thank u woodland James Tv poor sound ! Lovely woodland week end !
- meoncroft (10/5): THE CLEANEST HOTEL EVER! WORTH A LOT! - Booked here at last minute. Had nice bedroom with balcony overlooking the garden. Enjoyed watching the chickens. Some noise from bedroom next door. A warm welcome from Dan. How good to be shown where you will be sitting for meals instead of standing before the meal waiting to be seated. Breakfast good - cooked breakfast not the most extensive but the best ever - top quality & well cooked. Fab staff. Dinner 3 courses £35 - good home cooked food. Plenty of seating in conservatory etc.Walk to town easy. Parking OK. BUT the most amazing thing at the Hotel is the cleanliness - everywhere looked just decorated & SO CLEAN. I have been to Specsavers recently!
- F539FPdianam (10/5): A very pleasant experience - Couldn't fault the cleanliness and ambience of the whole hotel. The food was excellent and well presented, and the staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was very pleasant and the bed was very comfortable.
Thank you, Dan and Megan, for making our stay such a pleasant experience.
- Graham (10/5): - Very well maintained and my room was very spacious. A good breakfast too! All good the place wasn't full but I imagine parking might be tight.
- Marian (8/5): Highly recommend this lovely hotel in the heart of Sidmouth with welcoming staff and big modern room. - Clean and modern room recently renovated. Comfortable bed in big room. Very central part of town. Good breakfast which comes with price of the room No dinner on the night I was there.
- Karl Peter (3/5): Overpriced and overrated, avoid. - The breakfast. The hotel is not in any woodland. The room we got was a small room on the ground floor next to the reception and the mens toilet. The door did not effectively shut out the noise from the busy main hallway and reception area and toilet. It was an awkward stay. The room had direct access to the bakside via a glassed door and people could look straight into you on the bed. There were no effective curtains to shut. Very strange and awkward
- John (8/5): I was impressed by the hotel. It is unusual and I would definitely stay there again. - Everyone was welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable, Both meals were delicious - the best mushroom soup I've had for a long time! Had I been staying for longer the stairs could have become a slight problem. I am elderly and my room was on the first floor, as far from reception as possible!
- Kelly (10/5): Lovely place very comfortable - Quaint cute great location All good
- Carol (9/5): Definitely worth a visit! - Everything! I didn’t like the tea, (being a fussy tea drinker), everything else was fabulous. Spotlessly clean throughout, the breakfast and service was excellent, lovely hosts, we will certainly return!
- Roy (10/5): - Lovely hotel, friendly and also had kvernight EV chargers which was a plus
- Arthur (8/5): Comfortable - Very slow on checking in but just one of those things - I didn't get the impression that was always the case. Comfortable clean but small room. Excellent breakfast. The parking here is limited and tight. Easy walk into Sidmouth.
- Andrew (10/5): We enjoyed our stay very much If staying in the area again we would use again , we had dinner one night and it was the b - Very Friendly welcome . Our room was nice a bit small but ok for us The Parking can be a bit tight
- Kathryn (8/5): In all, good value and a great location. - Good location, immaculately clean.
Lovely breakfasts. A lot of precautionary signage about checking in and preferring debit cards to credit cards in reception. Seemed a bit school rules!
The bar area was a bit soulless and the honesty bar rather pricey for the quality of the drinks.
- Maureen (9/5): An overall enjoyable treat.staff lovely, food good, hotel extremely clean - An old property with quirky parts! Immaculately clean. The owners were very nice and helpful. The owners have chickens who roam the garden during the day. They are so comical to sit watch with a glass of wine or coffee, in the garden. Parking wasn’t always easy.
