- Frances (8/5): Happy with accommodation and location. - Good location and friendly staff. Breakfast toast hard.
- Lynda (8/5): -
- Guest (7/5): Countryside charm, but a little pricey for what it has to offer - The hotel has nice rustic appearance and, in a past century, must have been a staging post or something else to do with horses as its name indicates, The rooms are converted boxes from a stable adjoining to the main stead of the hotel. Overall comfy and clean; staff is friendly enough. - The rooms are a bit small with the bead taking most of the space in them.
- Breakfast is not a buffet. You just eat the plate that you are served.
- Dinner menu is not very varied.
- Deborah (9/5): We had a lovely stay & will return again in the near future. - It’s been tastefully renovated & the rooms are set across from the pub. Nothing.
- Guest (5/5): I think my stay was just ok and nothing exceptional. - I think the room could have been cleaner and less dusty.
- Johan (8/5): Great value for money - Good room, the veggie mushroom burger in the restaurant was pretty amazing. All in all a good place to stay for a night. Rooms could do with a bit of cleaning....we had a whale of a time spider hunting.
- Teresa (10/5): - Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The food was very good aswell.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (4/5): Won’t be back - The location suited us for what we needed. We didn’t have breakfast Facilities
- David (9/5): Superb - Good food, comfortable bed and friendly staff. A family run pub who are making good improvements. Nothing.
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Ellie (10/5): Amazing stay would definitely stay again - The accommodation was separate to the pub in little stable/barns by the car park. Great location. Lovely room, perfect for what we needed. Nothing bad to say!
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (8/5): Excellent value for money...The food is especially good. - Staff were excellent.
Comfortable clean room No coffee satchets in room
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Edward (7/5): Room 5 - Excellant location to Newmarket races. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The evening meal is very filling although menu limited, Bed really comfortable. General good atmosphere and prices reasonable. Our first night, we took a stroll to the village green and watched cricket. Says it all, apart from The Black Horse, there's nothing else. Parking good. We stayed two nights. The rooms are very small, but they have everything, they are very basic in both decor and fittings, with the shower being very small, no goog for a large person. The first night, best sleep ever, the second was the worst, because of the connecting room having no consideration for other guests,
- Michael (9/5): Highly recommended, everything I needed - Excellent accommodation, ideal setting , superb food and great staff N/A
- Russell (8/5): Very good -
- Alison (10/5): Warm welcome great food and ideal location for visiting the area - Breakfast was great
- Jade (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dave (8/5): Very good -
- Ernest (9/5): Superb -
- Katerina (10/5): Exceptional - Helpful staff!
- Emma (9/5): Would stay again - Great access to the rooms, nice location, very comfortable. No fridge, being such a hot few days, a fridge to keep some water/ drinks cold was needed.
- Kenneth (8/5): An enjoyable, comfortable stay. - location was good. I was cheerfully greeted and the staff were extremely helpful when I discovered a mistake with my booking. My fault. Thankfully they were still able to accomodate me. The .breakfast was extremely disappointing. No cereal or fresh fruit, the orange juice was okay and the coffee lukewarm. \on the plus side my scrambled eggs and crushed avocado was very good. Certainly not value for money. An enjpyabl
- Mary (10/5): Pleasant stay hosts were frirndly - Close to the races very clean Breakfast was extra 15 !
- John (8/5): Very good - Location, cleanliness, style
- John (9/5): Ideal location for exploring Cambridge with excellent and friendly hosts. - Lovely hosts - room was excellent and we took advantage of having breakfast for which we paid extra. It was well worth having the breakfast. We also took an evening meal which again was excellent value for money.
- Prath (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (9/5): Superb - A vast improvement from the previous years!
- Leathershorts (7/5): Good - Staff were brilliant in many respects. Great location close to towns and cities. Also on a bus route. Good pub grub. Great value, cheap & cheerful. Room was never cleaned or made up.
- Anonymous (9/5): We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would happily come again. - All the staff were friendly, helpful and brilliant. We enjoyed breakfast, and due adjustment was made for my wife's lactose intolerance at all meals. We also enjojed dinners. The wine list was rather limited and tended towards pricey. Perhaps Chilean Sauvingon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvingon and/or Carmenere, and/or South African Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and/or Syrah at the £20 - £24 level might enhance the offering.
- Nick (7/5): Stay was good, had everything we needed, no complaints. Will stay again. - Greeting was good, staff friendly and helpful, room nice and tidy, nice pub.
- Robert (10/5): Nice Country Pub - Good access to carpark and convenient location
- Malcolm (9/5): Superb - Well positioned , in attractive village with handy village store next door . Nice ambiance with a helpful , friendly hostess & locals. Tasteful interior design that lends to a very relaxed , enjoyable stay . Lovely menu for both dinner & breakfast that comes very well presented .
Perfect if you've got a four legged friend with you as there is a village green across from pub & various walks locally .... highly recommend Only one slight criticism .... the accommodation is lovely with handy parking outside your front door. The only reservation is the amount of daylight coming in room first thing in morning .... a door curtain/ blind would help & perhaps some blinds / blackout curtains for windows . As I say , a minor detail but would just help the sleep situation 😴
- Hugh57 (9/5): Close to Cambridge - Parking by room, bed comfort, newly installed bathroom food and drink at the pub. Friendly staff. Alex the new owner is upgrading the business very well. Nothing
- Hugh57 (9/5): Top marks - Parking outside your room, new decor and bathroom, comfortable bed. Elaine was great at welcoming us and showing us round. Alex the new owner has done a great job with refurbishment and the pub offers a very good selection of beers. Well placed for Cambridge or country villages. Perfect Nothing.
- Rodney (8/5): It was a nice country pub with good facilities - The room was excellent with car parking near the rom Nothing everything was good
- Carly (10/5): Would definitely stay again! - Easy access, parking available, very good food and friendly staff
- Claire (9/5): Superb -
- Guy (10/5): Exceptional - The location was quaint, charming, a visit to times past. Some of my ancestry can be traced back to this part of England, and the inn made me feel at home. The meals and service were excellent. Nothing in particular comes to mind.
- Neil (9/5): Superb -
- Diana (8/5): Pleasant Village Stopover on the Cambridge - Suffolk Border - Convenient village location for Cambridge or Newmarket attractions. The Black Horse is easy to find on the main road through the village. There are 7 chalet type rooms behind the main pub building which are fairly quiet. The double bed was very comfortable. The bedroom and shower room were clean and well-designed. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We can recommend the sourdough pizza on Wednesdays but beware - portions are very generous! The room had an internet TV which could not connect to any TV stations. We were able to connect to the WIFI on our mobiles - perhaps there wasn't enough bandwidth for the telly as well. The shower cubicle is quite small so might be awkward for anyone with mobility problems.
- Ingela (8/5): Very good - Enjoyable stay.
- Gordon (10/5): Fine place, friendly helpful staff - Traditional pub with a room Has a little difficulty working out the heating in the room
- Jane (5/5): The staff were lovely, the room was comfortable and it was in an ideal location for our needs. - Breakfast was lovely and a fair price. We thought the shower was a bit small and unfortunately we couldn’t get the heater to work on the last night and morning.
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Tom (8/5): Very good -
- Carol (10/5): fab, homely and welcoming - The wonderful friendly staff, it was clean warm and comfy. Food was brilliant and obviously home cooked. Carpark which is a bonus. bar area was a little sparse, but they are still refurbishing.
- Jake (7/5): Good -
- Claire (9/5): Loved it. - The rooms have been revamped and are comfortable and clean with new beds, carpets and furniture very nice. Pub is located near to the marina so is ideal location for us or if you are going to Newmarket Races. The pub has new owners and it has been upgraded in decor and the food is amazing!!! Lamb and steak was perfect and so was the full English which I forgot to take photo of. Menu changes weekly I think but it is all fresh and sustainable and the chef/owner knows his stuff. I have no complaints.
- Robin (10/5): Brilliant food, very comfortable stay - Under new ownership, rooms redecorated and refreshed. Food both for dinner and breakfast is truly excellent. Very clean, very comfortable. Nothing, was a very comfortable stay.
- Collis (6/5): I was more than happy with my stay . - I did not have breakfast. I had no complaints
- Gary (7/5): Apparently it’s due to close August 2024 - Great location No food in the evenings
- Rhydell (2/5): Awful - Location, nice looking building in an attractive village close to Newmarket Racecourse. Room dated, smelled damp, mouldy wall and peeling paint in bathroom. Furniture stained.
Pub itself also tired, wasnt serving food Bar Manager said it was being taken over by new owners soon. Lets hope they give it a facelift, its got potential but is currently awfuly. Was £95 per not, should be half that!
- Mark (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was limited as the place is closing down, we wasn't told on arrival and they still offered us breakfast
- Lewis (5/5): Passable -
- Margaret (6/5): Pleasant -
- Roy (1/5): Bad -
- Helen (4/5): Disappointing - Not overly clean, toilet and bathroom unclean, cobwebs on ceiling in room.only enough milk for one drink each
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynne (4/5): Disappointing - We have had several emails from you saying our credit card has been declined, we were paying at the hotel this left us getting to the black horse not knowing if we were booked in or not. We arrived at the Black Horse and checked in & booked breakfast for Sunday. We asked about an evening meal and the lady said they are not doing food as they have let staff go and she was leaving at the end of the month. We paid in full, she showed us our room which was a bit dated, but quirky it was a converted stable. The bedding was clean and the room ok. We had a quiet night except hearing others flush the toilet through the night. We went for breakfast in the morning and were greeted by 2 young men. The breakfast was cooked freshly but for me it was too fatty, I can't eat greasy food and the fried bread wasn't for me, nor the hash brown and black pudding, I used a tissue to soak the fat up from the egg. I asked for toast which they did cook for me
- Susie121291 (8/5): Very good - It was good and food OK. It was worth the money.
- John (7/5): Great for business accommodation - Staff are friendly
Harley was especially helpful
Room clean ,bright and comfortable.
Price reasonable All was OK
But mattress too soft for me
- Jayne (8/5): Good location, helpful and friendly staff, value for money. - Location was ideal for our sightseeing.
- Paul (5/5): Good clean throughout, particularly the bedrooms. - Location is fantastic, quiet village and friendly locals. Very quiet at night resulting in a good night sleep. Room was dirty, along with the breakfast room. Breakfast chief/waiter was rude and ignorant. Limited food menu.
- Andrew (7/5): Good -
- Jan (1/5): Bad -
- Ian (8/5): Very good - Staff were very friendly and very helpful. Especially the chef.
The hotel is ideslly located for Cambridge and Newmarket and we visited both.
The room was okay , nothing special but adequate.
Great to have free onsite parking just yards from the room. Its a shame that when we stayed the hotel was about to change hands to new management and although the staff were very helful and friendly you could tell they were hampered by not being about to order stock fir the kitchen or the bar. That said we had 2 decent breakfasts and adequate refreshments from the bar.
The rooms could do with a bit of a refurb, bathroom looked very worn.
No remote for the tv and the small fan in the room not enough to keep the room cool albeit it was a very warm couple of days we were there. I think normally its probably not so much of a problem.
- Devina (5/5): Good location for the racecourse. Not very clean. - Location was good as we were going to the racecourse Room was not very clean. We found a toenail clipping on the carpet.
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional - homely and welcoming, great value! special thanks to the chefs for a lovely breakfast too
- Adrian (8/5): Very good -
- Nikki (1/5): Poor management and communication - Location was fab…but shabby room, bathroom full of black mould, beds where sunk in places, curtains hanging off the rails, very disheveled and not very inviting. Booked breakfast; chef advised that they had no food and he needed to go to shop!! The rooms
Where booked out.Waited 55 mins for breakfast! Quality of the food was shocking, couldn’t eat it!!
- Rachel (1/5): Don't bother wasting your money - Bed comfy and clean.and near Newmarket. Everything! Dirty room, spiders all over the room and bathroom, the thin spindly ones that hide in dirty places. The price at 75 for the room should be more than 50. Charged 10 per person for a brekkie, which was just disgusting and never ate plus had no cereals!! Grease that tasted like it was cooked in a dirty pan if it was cooked fresh at all... could not get out of there quick enough...one of the worst places I ever stayed on a budget. So sorry but the place could be so much more as the village is beautiful and it's right on the Newmarket door! Whatever brewery owns this, you should be ashamed of yourselves as doggy hotels are better than this place.
- Dr (1/5): na - i could not enter the property . i kept standing outside for long . there was no number to call . worst experience . i had to quickly book another lodge by paying £71 na
- Linda (6/5): We only spent the one night on our way south, which was adequate for our needs.Feel as though there is potential for a go - Good location,in a nice village Although the bed was clean and comfortable the room needed some refurbishment.
We had an evening meal which was O K but nothing special. The breakfast was pretty much the same,no one around and not very sociable.
- Rowena (7/5): The young chef cooked the meals we had from fresh and all cooked perfectly. - Convenient for Wicken Fen and Anglesey Abbey, both National Trust and excellent. Pity they’re not listed in the hotel’s suggested local attractions. The room was unclean. Bedside table sticky, carpet not vacuumed and the bathroom wooden areas covered in dust. That’s other people’s skin.
- Keith (1/5): Every where was dirty, bed was uncomfortable - Location It wasn’t clean
- Bill (10/5): very friendly and helpful staff had nothing to complain about - everything
- Pedder (3/5): Poor - Not much Never no staff available. Failed to return call despite leaving several messages. Room was cold. Could not operate heating. Shower enclosure was broken & door would not close. The Shower rail came off falling on me. Room felt damp.
Could not find anybody when checking out. Then bumped into what I assume was the Cook. He took the keys but was not very pleasant.
- Gavin (8/5): Very Good - Lovely stay. Quite a wait for breakfast so not ideal for a business trip.
- Shuvo (3/5): Do not stay in this over priced place!!!! - From the outside it looks fine but on further inspection room 5 was awful ! The smell of damp in the bathroom, mould and generally in dirty condition with a thick layer of dust on most surfaces. Curtains that are broken and a mattress that is well beyond it's best and needs chucking out.....I ate in the pub and the food was poor , with sticky tables to match. I can see why I was the only person eating at the time. The whole place and wouldn't return.
- Deborah (3/5): Never going back - Husbands fry up was exceptional. They had no cereals, no fruit or yoghurt but chef did offer porridge. That they had no cereals or yoghurt or fresh fruit for me. I’m diabetic and the chef did me porridge but it was so thick I couldn’t eat it.
The room was tired with marks on wall and the bathroom was the same. Could only get 2 channels on tv. Also kept awake until 1 am with noisy water system when people flushed toilet.
- Travel-ey (7/5): Traditional Country Pub with Real Ale and Pleasant Accommodation - I stayed here by chance and found it on Booking.com last minute. It was the type of place I was looking for in a reasonably close proximity to my workplace. The beer garden was bustling with people, the hanging baskets of flowers were a lovely touch, and the pub was traditional (in a way pubs should be) and sold real ale. Its the sort of pub that has managed to survive post covid so it must be a popular place with locals and tourists. The rooms are in the old stable block and are traditional and nicely done. I would stay here or visit again. I could hear the fan noise from the room next door when the bathroom light went on (which happened late at night unfortunately) and there seemed to be some other humming noise like a generator or machinery coming from behind the wall. It was a stifling hot evening and the small fan was welcome but didn't quite match up to the heat in the room (it was a quite rare heatwave though). At £95 it was a bit pricey for what I got but I did book last minute so that could be why.
- Claire (7/5): Cheap stay don’t recommend the breakfast - Rooms are old stables beautiful property. Nice and quiet and close to amenities Could do with a good clean. Spiders web inside of bathroom and strange black splatters on the wall. No remote control for the tv as they keep being stolen.
Had to wait for someone to serve us at breakfast. Gentleman proceeded to shout from the bar asking for our order. No brown sauce and bacon was rock hard. Wasn’t asked which type of egg we would like.
- Mark (5/5): Too expensive for dated room - Good location clean towels and bedding Room needs makeover no milk for tea expensive
- Gregg (7/5): Good -
- Sam (3/5): Poor - The breakfast was a big let down to be greeted by : there is no juice and no cereal. Then having to ask separately if we were allowed tea and/or coffee. There simply wasn't and service that would be normal in terms of expectations.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Linda (5/5): Pleasant staff but time needed to improve - Comfortable bed Very tired
- Michael (6/5): The bar staff were a little bit chatty, - The shed did not come to my table. He spoke to me from the bar there’s no orange juice. Two sausages, one egg fried bread, two pieces of fried black pudding two pieces of bacon
It wasn’t too bad I asked for toast The way never comes to our table doublecheck everything is okay staff
- Teresa (10/5): Exceptional - Great stopover place to stay, clean and quiet to sleep Nothing
- Christopher (4/5): Friendly staff but room lacking in charm and facilities. - Good parking and spacious bar and eating areas Basic rooms, inoperable tv, bit noisy
