• michaelbA9493TX (8/5): Pleasant stay but beware of parking issues - Parking at this hotel is an absolute nightmare and makes no sense whatsoever. We spent 40 minutes at reception trying to get some parking app to work. One member of staff said there was no entry time limit and then another said there was a 20 minute limit which we had already exceeded trying to get the useless app to work. The staff then did their best to get any potential parking ticket cancelled. I am left hoping that no ticket will come through. As we were leaving even a tradesman working at the hotel was having to get parking tickets cancelled. In fairness the staff were super helpful in trying to sort the situation out. Why bother with the parking cameras and app? There is nothing else around that non-hotel residents would park here for in any case. If you really need the parking income just get rid of the cameras and app and add a parking charge on to the overall bill; much easier. This one load of hassle would put me off staying here again. This is a shame as the hotel is fine and we had a very pleasant weekend away here with friends. The bonus is the staff who were all really helpful and friendly. They did their best to sort out the parking situation as well as advising on travel by local bus and places to visit. On the Saturday evening we were warned that the hotel would be very busy as there was a Sunderland match on and there might be some noise. As it turned out we didn't really notice any difference and it wasn't a problem at all.

I am not sure why it was no longer part of that chain but it hadn't really changed. It was the same as it used to be. It was clean and tidy and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. One word of warning: On their website they say they are in walking distance of the city centre amenities such as the Emporium Theatre (which is why we were there). We used Google maps to plan our walk and when it suggested it would take 50 mins we decided that was a little too much of a stroll to the theatre and back. Other than that this is a very good, value for money, hotel with lovely staff.

Rooms clean and comfortable enough, staff good at check in, very rude at breakfast, we didn’t bother staying for breakfast in the end we walked to the retail park and ate there. Sign on reception said 20 minute walk to Stadium of Light but it’s definitely 30-40 minutes. Would I return, no not really.

The rooms were clean and adequate. What really made our stay memorable was the staff! All the ones we met were so helpful, pleasant and personable.

• 900linw (8/5): Hotel is a great find. - Initially I was disappointed as the outside of the hotel was tired. There were a lot of weeds & rubbish. However the welcome was great. The room was large & clean. The bed was comfortable & clean. Breakfast for me, was a delicious bacon cob & coffee although lots to choose from. Staff were chatty & friendly & nothing was a problem. Parking was plentiful although you do have to pay. Someone please tidy outside.

Our initial impressions weren't great as there was lots of litter outside however we were greeted warmly, our room was large, clean and was just what we needed. Breakfast was simple but filling, cereal, yoghurt, fruit juice and a hot sausage sandwich was a good start to the day. We've been visiting Sunderland for eight years and normally stay in the Hilton, but this is a bargain and excellent value for money. Please find someone to litter pick out the front though, it will make initial impressions so different!
• Rachel (4/5): Hotel stay 1 night - Room was dirty and very hot . I had pre booked a cot no cot in room so had to got to reception. No milk sugar one cup and spoon for a hot drink when there should be two. Paid for cooked breakfast to find out it's only continent breakfast reception staff was helpful. Would i stay again no not for me over priced and not what i was looking for in my stay
• kerisr2025 (2/5): Worst nights sleep ever. I was promised a refund and I’m now being ignored by the company. - Worst nights sleep I’ve ever had. I came here with my 2 toddlers and they were kept up all night due to the thumping noise upstairs. We reported this to reception and nothing was done about this matter. We decided to leave the hotel at 6am due to this matter , we were promised our breakfast we had paid for would be refunded and it never has been. All my messages to the property have been ignored. Would NOT recommend this hotel for a family.

They went all out to cater for my gluten intolerance, providing one of the best and biggest continental and cooked breakfast I've ever had. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean, affordable with lots of amenities nearby. This was our first trip to Sunderland to visit family, it certainly won't be our last. The Magnum felt like a second home. Well done to all the staff.

I found the hotel very comfortable and the staff very friendly, I would like to give a special mention to Chris on reception for helping me with instructions on bus timetables to Durham to attend the miners gala, nothing was too much trouble for him. • Bahram (6/5): - Hottle Review – Stayed with Family (2 Adults, 2 Children) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 out of 5) We stayed here as a family (2 adults and 2 children). The room was simple but neat and spacious enough for our needs. Cleanliness was good, and the location is convenient. Parking was reasonably priced at £5 per night, with occasional discounts available. The overall price was fair compared to similar accommodations — we paid around £90 for one night. Most of the staff were friendly, especially one lovely lady working the Sunday morning shift on June 22nd. I regret not getting her name, but I want to thank her and hope the hotel management appreciates her excellent service. Breakfast wasn't a buffet and had limited options, but given the price, it was acceptable and we were satisfied. There are a few downsides to be aware of: No lift No gym No air conditioning. This could be an issue in warm weather — the room only had a fan, which didn’t work well when temperatures rose. In summary: Room: Simple, clean, and spacious Cleanliness: Good Location: Convenient Price: Fair Staff: Mixed — some average, one exceptional Breakfast: Limited, but acceptable Facilities: Lacking A/C, lift, and gym Overall, a decent stay. • Paul (4/5): - The hotel has recently been changed over from a migrant hotel back to a functional hotel. However very little has been done to bring it back to a functional accommodation. I would not take a UV light to either carpets or beds. It is clear the place needs a full refurb. When you arrive the first thing you notice is the derelict pub next to the entrance. The receptionist who would prefer to be somewhere else and has an attitude akin to the tired and unwelcoming property. The rooms are dirty, we did not take our shoes off in the room, as the carpet was covered in stains. The saving grace was the cold ridden receptionist in the morning who went out of her way to make breakfast pleasant. Will never stay again!
• N887LWchristiner (10/5): Amazing staff, spotlessly clean, dated decor - This hotel is dated but it is spotlessly clean. The staff are the real stars and are the nicest of any hotel in the area. I travel to Sunderland regularly to see family and the magnum is my hotel of choice. The rooms are comfortable and have everything you need. The recently renovated reception area provides a comfortable place to have breakfast. It can be a bit chaotic when busy but the staff do everything they can to serve you quickly.
• tonit520 (10/5): Cracking little hotel! - Booked via Booking.com months ago, when I bought tickets to see Sam Fender in Newcastle. I paid £38.50 on booking and was non-refundable. I'll be honest, I didn't have the highest of hopes given the price I paid - or on first impressions of the area when we arrived. That being said, my daughter and I only needed a bed for the night and a shower, so we weren't particularly concerned that is was basic. How surprised were we? Staff were so friendly and helpful, and our room was ready at 12noon, as we requested an early check in, so that we could freshen up after a 3 hour drive from Cheshire. There was a £5 charge for 24 hour parking which was super easy to pay via the device at reception. The room was excellent, very clean and tidy with a comfy bed and pillows. The bathroom was fully equipped with toiletries etc. When we arrived back at 12.30am, we were chuffed to bit we could get a freshly cooked pizza from reception. Please ignore the negative reviews, if a cheap and cheerful base is what you require, then this is the place for you. I worked in the hotel industry for many years and I believe you get what you pay for. This hotel exceeded all my expectations, and for that gets a 5 from me!

• GEORGIOS (8/5): - A good budget hotel to stay. Staff are friendly and helpfull. The only thing is that the breakfast is just reheated and not cooked fresh there. Omelete was served cold as it was not cooked properly from frozen but in general not a bad place to stay. Short distance to Newcastle as well.
• 332bernadettes (10/5): Great stop over - Just had a one night stop over in this hotel. From outside the surrounding area doesn’t look great. However, from check in to check out fantastic, polite, friendly staff. Room warm and clean, yes does need a little TLC, only there to sleep so all good. Plenty tea coffee. Bottle water, crisps, chocolate and can of coke all left in room a lovely touch. Plenty of hot water and lovely clean towels. Great for parking on site and just a short taxi ride into town. Breakfast continental or hot sandwiches again great staff. If I need to stay over in the area again this will be my go to hotel. Thanks

• danaL9121FG (2/5): Never staying again. - Stay Away. Upon arrival and checking into the hotel the receptionist informed me it wasn't the Hotel's car park and that it was £5 per day. I have absolutely no problem with this and have stayed in many hotels that I have paid for parking. The receptionist then said I could pay there and then, so paid £15.00 via card. A week later, I received 2 parking charges through the post. Unfortunately, as it was a hire car I have also had to pay £35.00 per ticket as admin charges. So I am now £85.00 out of pocket and nearly 4 weeks later after several emails still no closer to receiving a refund for this and just keep being pushed around. Rooms are 'ok' but very tired. No good food and must travel to get anything.
• Charlotte (10/5): - Upon arrival at the hotel we were greeted with a warm attitude, the member of staff on desk on arrival was very friendly with my 4 year old daughter whom is very talkative and loves meeting new people. Our room was to a good standard - clean, spacious and had everything we needed including an en-suite bathroom, a TV, toiletries and a fan which kept us cool during the night. We had breakfast in the morning which was up to a good standard and the member of staff on the desk at breakfast time was incredibly friendly. Overall I’d give the property a 9 out of 10. There was only one issue which was the location, it wasn’t the most ideal for our plans for the next day but the overall experience was excellent and I would return again providing that the location is convenient for our plans.

The hot b'fst on offer was more of a sausage, egg and/or bacon sandwich with some hash browns option at a few well appointed tables set off the main reception area. Really tasty sausages and bacon as it happens. I was more than happy. Continental style bfst items also available inc. some lovely muffins. The staff were so friendly too. Did have to pay for parking but then again the good room rate I paid compensated for that. Would definitely stay again.

• Nick (10/5): 5 star touches. - The staff were outstanding. It could of been a 5 star hotel. The gent on recreation offered to carry bags. Advised on the local area. Asked how we were and about our day. There was even an Easter delivery to the room. Unexpected but very lovely. All the staff went above and beyond here. Thank you for the most pleasant and happy stay at a hotel in a very long time.
• Chinchilla64 (8/5): Super staff, Great value and goid location - Me and my two daughters aged 21 and 11 had a last minute booking. Our booking was easy to do online and I used my Blue light card to get a discount, I'm a registered nurse. We stayed for two nights with breakfast. The price was great value. We were greeted by Adam who was so friendly on arrival and made checking in smooth; helping to sort out the parking and even carried our cases to our room without question. Our room was very clean, comfortable and a good size. The only negative is noise; the floors creak and I could hear people upstairs and in the corridor. (I did request a quiet room as Im a very light sleeper). This was such a shame because we loved everything about the hotel, especially the staff! Breakfast was a bonus and the quality was good! I especially liked the cooked offerings although not essential. I must say the staff went above and beyond what we were expecting and we could feel that they genuinely cared about our experience. Both Sarah and Emma were lovely; especially Emma at checkout.  The staff really make this hotel special. If the room noise and creaky flooring could be sorted it would be just perfect. We would stay again and maybe an upstairs room may have been a better option. However, we  congratulate the staff on a super pleasant stay.

• Verified traveler (8/5): Basic But Lovely - It's a simple, no -frills establishment, which doesn't have a lift just so people are aware, which if you don't have a lot of luggage is okay. Very comfortable bed, and it was quiet where we were, so we couldn't ask for more. It does have easy access to an extensive retail park and a large Sainsbury's if you need supplies, so not a terrible location (Don't let the derelict building next door put you off). Cheap and cheerful, with immensely lovely and accommodating staff. The breakfast is a little limited, but does offer the basics, so isn't that bad. Recommended as a place to stay that isn't extortionate.

There is actually a 5 pound parking charge which they failed to tell booking.com. It took over an hour to pay for parking as the app didn't work and the phone line was terrible. Although the staff were lovely it was clear that there staff didn't know what they were doing, I suspect that this was due to the hotel only being open a couple of months. The hotel fell way below the standards we would expect of a best western. When we checked in we asked the member of staff on reception if food was being served. His response was that he had never cooked any food however he told us he would try. We went to KFC. There is no restaurant at this hotel. When we went up to our room it was freezing the window was wide open and rain was coming in. There was only an electric radiator to heat the room with. Also the bed sheets were damp on both beds. We paid for breakfast as part of our booking however we then noticed that food was being prepared on the reception counter. They told us that they had only started doing food the week before. There is no way that this would pass standards for food hygiene and I am certain once inspected that they will no longer be able to keep preparing and cooking food as there is not even a kitchen. To be fair to the staff members who cooked the breakfast did use gloves The only positive points I could say about the hotel is that the staff are lovely and the rooms were spotless but this is one hotel we won't be using again. There is no way this is best western standards
• Global315230 (4/5): Cheap - Pros - cheap, clean, comfortable bed, lots of pillows. Cons - small bar heater which didn’t work so no heating, lukewarm water in shower. If you have anyone above you be prepared for no sleep as every movement means the floor creaks and footsteps are heard loudly. Also parking is not free.

The whole building is very tired as are the rooms, but the room was clean and needs updating. The bed was really uncomfortable and dipped in the middle. This hotel appears to be used as an over spill for families who are homeless etc for what ever reason. We had the pleasure of being stood behind them while they were checking in, with their list of demands as to which rooms they wanted and what free drinks they wanted. The young girl on the desk seemed intimidated by them. As we left to go out for a meal last night, 2 young females were sat in the entrance to the lobby smoking weed in front of the reception staff. The hotel was noisy. The people above us seemed to spend their entire night stomping backwards and forwards across the floor of their room and then we caught the live show as they had sex very noisily! The security door to the corridor to the rooms, is open 24/7 so it didn't feel safe. Our car didn't feel secure in the car park, and there was groups of young lads on bikes, just hanging around. The derelict building next door is a complete eyesore and this is advertised as a restaurant and bar on site. It's been closed for a very long time. All in all it was a horrendous experience.

• TimandLisafromStoke (10/5): Excellent Hotel Highly Recommended - Adam, Lisa and Summit are running a fabulous hotel. No matter what you need, they will provide everything for you. Rooms are immaculate and cleaned to a high standard . All the staff were friendly and would recommend anyone staying in the area to stay at the Magnum Hotel you wont be disappointed
• GraemeK16 (6/5): OWNE 2024 - I visited Sunderland to attend the Offshore Wind North East event and selected the Magnum as a reasonably priced hotel as the other hotels in town were charging ridiculous rates. The hotel is easy to find next to a derelict bar restaurant with plenty of onsite parking which was free for residents. The hotel looks like it was once a Premier Inn and at first glance looks jaded. Reception is a bit of a strange set up but the room was clean with a nice comfortable bed, tv, kettle etc and a tidy en suite with towels soap, shampoo etc. I never bothered with breakfast as it was nothing appealing. McDonalds is a short drive away. All in all, good value for money on an overnight stay but don’t expect the finer things.

There was a lovely restaurant next door which was fine to take the kids in upstairs. There was a bar downstairs (beneath the restaurant) with a live DJ set (Saturday night) but we heard nothing from our room at front of the hotel, right next to the bar. Breakfast in a bag - as expected, porridge, water, fruit, croissant Family room £65 - happy with that

• LYNNEW604 (6/5): Nice but tired hotel - We stayed for one night at this comfort inn hotel ..its close to the city around about a five minute drive ..good car parking which is free ( a bonus these days ) on our arrival we were met by a lovely friendly receptionist who was very helpful, the interior fittings Are of an old premier inn and although comfortable are in need of an upgrade refurbishment...very nice soft bed ..and a good nights sleep although it can be very noisy as its close to a Main road leading into the city..so don't sleep with your window open.. one slight disappointment is it advertises breakfast included? This isn't the case! Breakfast comes in a bag.. so very misleading be aware ! But overall a very nice tired hotel which does the job for a short break.

• davidwilliambarnes (8/5): Cosy Comfort - Although this Inn is very tired looking and the bedrooms need updating I gave it a 4* because the bed was fantastic and we had a great nights sleep - very important to us. Also, the lady on the desk was so nice and welcoming. Parking was easy and it was en route to the Stadium of Light where we witnessed a 5-0 win for the Black Cats. Breakfast needs improving upon with the ‘grab bags’ contents.

Rooms were a bit dated but comfortable, breakfast bags a bit naff but lots of ahops locally and cafes for cooked breakfast.

The staff are really friendly, helpful and efficient. It is very clean and comfortable. I intend going back as soon and as often as I can.
• markbQ4518NT (8/5): Cheap and cheerful - Spent a night at this hotel due to work. It’s clearly an old premiere inn and as such the fittings etc are a little tired. The staff were friendly and helpful and the bed very comfortable, I was provided with a breakfast bag too. For the price I paid I really can’t fault it. Would stay again without hesitation.

• Verified traveler (4/5): - I stayed for two nights with my young daughter. The Wednesday all night until around 2am was talking really loud, banging and banging of doors until then. Me and my daughter didn’t get much sleep at all. Then Thursday night someone set the smoke alarm off in the room next to me at 10.30pm. Then all they was doing was talking loud and banging again. This is not my best stay at this hotel at all. My daughter is only 1 so as you can imagine wasn’t the best stay at all. I certainly don’t know if I will be coming back to this hotel
