Guest Reviews
- Keith (8/5): - Amazingly quiet hostel, in large wooded garden. Twin room we had was lovely. Hostel has washing facilities and also a small kitchen to cook your own food. It was like a little oasis of peace and quiet. Great local street food available 1o minutes away by the University. It's an hours walk out of the old town. The main issue was that some of the organised tourist trips wouldn't travel out to pick you up. Although there were lots of local street food options, none of them served beer, and no obvious local bar anywhere near the hostel. We generally grabbed a cold one from the nearest 7 Eleven.

- Stephanie (9/5): Affordable Serene Oasis near Wat Umong - The location was fantastic. It was such an oasis of peace next to the big city. It was walkable to some amazing spots to eat, all the amenities we could ask for, and especially to the fascinating Wat Umong. It was serene and quiet all the time. The rooms are simple, but clean and well kempt.
- Yevhen (9/5): - Очень приятное место для пребывания и отдыха При всех позитивных сторонах этого варианта мне показалось спальное помещение где я спал немного страдает от сырости (стены ниже уровня грунта).
- Amy Berman Ocampo (10/5): A Quiet, Peaceful Space. -
- Amy Berman Ocampo (10/5): A Peaceful Stay. I’ll return. - Insight Hostel is located near Wat Umong and is up the hill from Chiangmai University. As the place is used as a meditation center at some times during the year, it feels very peaceful and sanctuary like. Chiangmai University Agricultural Department has a fresh market everyday and a larger market on Thursdays and Fridays. There is a great health food store called ‘Aggie Hut’ on site as well as another just across from it. Also, down the big street is a delicious vegetarian restaurant called ‘Ming Kuan.’ There is also a lovely shop called ‘Smoke and Cinder’ nearby with some really nice perfume, incense and unique gifts. Be sure to visit Wat Umong. If you go to the big street and turn left you will come to Base Camp and a hiking trail that goes up the mountain. Find a better option than mosquito coils to keep those mosquitos away. Maybe there is a citrus option.
- MaryElisabeth (5/5): - It was earless to have a private room and bathroom. I arrived very early in the morning at the property two days after I was supposed to check in. I had paid for the entire booking already. The host let another guest stay in my room, and therefore my room was not ready when I arrived. There were no sheets on the beds and I had to ask for towels, which I only got one for my entire eight days stay. There were many ants throughout the entire room. The beds were extremely hard as well.

- Stephanie (7/5): Good - Good location to walk around!
- Ash (9/5): Great place - Lovely place not to far from town but far enough to feel in nature. Liked it here a lot The pillows were just blocks of memory foam which I found so uncomfortable
- Eider (10/5): It’s a georgious booden house surrounded by centennial trees and huge palms. Very special place. Highly recommended. -
- Piterskaya (10/5): Exceptional -

- Ciara (8/5): Very good - The location is peaceful and quiet, surrounded by trees. The dorm was female with 16 beds total, but layout meant it didn’t seem that many people. The people I met were lovely with a meant staying medium term.
It’s walking distance to Wat umong, nice coffee shops, restaurants and convenience stores, night market, university. I would stay again if I wanted somewhere quiet. Overall it needs a bit of repair, the light in the dorm was broken, one sink not working. There are two showers, with one shower cold water only.
It was high season so maybe needs more than one clean a day.
- Marieke (9/5): Charming hostel with a serene ambiance - The hostel is charming, featuring traditional wooden Thai houses and a serene ambiance. It’s conveniently located just a 9-minute walk from the renowned Wat Umong temple and only a 15-minute drive from the airport. As a light sleeper, I was pleasantly surprised by how peaceful it was at night, allowing me to enjoy a restful sleep. The staff doesn't speak English, so it's helpful to have Google Translate ready on your phone. They initially forgot to provide towels in the private room I booked, but this was quickly resolved.
- Jil (10/5): Calming place in the nature - This accommodation was for sure my favourite of all the places I have stayed. It is surrounded by magical nature and very calm, the perfect place to get some good rest! The staff is very friendly and the entire place just feels like home. -
- Georg (8/5): Very good - Simple & nice, very clean Please provide some lockers for the valuables. The place is completely unattended most of the time. 🙏🏼
- Ombeline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sonia (10/5): A haven of calm - Wonderful haven where you can escape the hustle and bustle of city life. I keep coming back! The place attracts such interesting guests and the calm ambiance makes for easy exchanges and happy chance meetings. I can’t recommend it enough. There isn’t an abundance of hot water but I honestly didn’t care as everything else outweighs this small inconvenience.
- Carolina (9/5): Superb -
- Sonia (10/5): Peaceful paradise. Choose it if you don’t want the hustle of the city. - Perfect for those who like tranquility. The owners create a wonderfully relaxed, calm atmosphere. I met such lovely guests. Breakfast is toast, coffee and fruit. There’s a pleasant relaxed area near to reception. Nice greenery. Nice grounds. It’s near to the university so food is cheap, abundant and great quality. I ate with Chinese students in a restaurant- food was outstanding for 80 bat.
- Suthamanan (8/5): This is my second trip to Chiangmai this year, i will reserve a room here again next time for sure. -

- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cynthia (10/5): Exceptional - This accommodation is a true gem on the outskirts of Chiang Mai! The charm of the exterior and the tranquility of being at a reasonable tuktuk distance from the city center convinced me entirely! The female dormitory was spacious and quiet!
A great find that I wouldn't hesitate to return to if another trip is planned.
- Teyyy (9/5): Quiet & Beautiful Place - I returned twice and stayed at this place for 12 nights. I love it because:
+ friendly and responsive staff & host (english speaking)
+ clean toilet, bed & common areas
+ quiet and relaxing environment surrounded by trees
+ nice outdoor kitchen and hangout area
+ a lot of cheap eateries & beverages close by
+ close to nature activities, e.g. monk's trail, wat umong, etc.
+ beautiful lightning of the trees at night
- bicycle parking point at the venue, so you can rent a bicycle via app - issues with partly dysfunctional air conditioning and construction work, thus facing temporarily not ususable women's bathroom but they have solved the issue very well and upgraded me to another room for the last 2 nights. thanks!
- you can hear some planes departing and landing, but after the last place it is quiet.
- wifi not always stable, but works most of the time
- Teyyy (9/5): Superb - + quiet, peaceful, lots of greenery
+ clean, spacious & lovely outdoor kitchen & hangout area (homey feeling)
+ close to chiang mai university eateries & nature activities
+ clean female dorm & bed
+ friendly staff (but it was not so easy to catch the service woman and ask questions since did not speak english)
+ nice relaxing catch up with fellow travelers
+ available on-site:
a) a bicycle rental station (via app) within the hostel
b) big meditation room upstairs (but only with very flat sitting pads) - toilet & shower could be cleaned more often (it has not been cleaned when i arrived but also not during my 5 days stay).
- matrice was a bit hard, but okayish for a few days.
- Teyyy (9/5): Superb - See my rating for Febr 27-29, 2024. See my rating for Febr 27-29, 2024.
- Marta (9/5): Superb - It was a nice stay, quiet and comfortable. Excellent place if you want to have a rest from a busy center of Chiang Mai.
- Xia (8/5): Very good - This place is quiet, clean and in close distance to Chiang Mai University, where you can find lots of decent and cheap restaurant choices. Also, Its neighborhood is full of greenery. Only several companions are living in the dorm, so you won't find to much disturb. The vertical space of the double-deck bed is too limited. You can't even sit straight on your bed and should always be careful to not hitting your head.
- Diederik (8/5): If I return I will definitely book again at Insight Hostel. - Great location, great staff. There is nothing to complain about, I will just suggest to have a bit more cutlery available in the kitchen.
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet, clean with water available. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely come back. A little far from main area but not hard to get too. Everything was great.
- Thuý (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elisa (9/5): Peaceful escape - it was secluded and very quiet and peaceful. Supermarkets are in walking distance. Night markets and food places are also near by.
- Hera (9/5): Superb - I like this hostel
Very quiet and good location (don’t know why some people said it’s remote
It’s close to a hiking trail and a temple.Cafes and restaurants are nearby plus only 10-min walk there is a big night market with many pharmacy shops grocery stores.
It’s also very clean and comfortable.
Recommend who wants silent at the same time needs convenience I wish more guests stay here:)

- Johannes (9/5): Superb -
- Rachelr913 (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet area, clean, comfortable. Had the whole dorm to myself. Let me check out later as I was waiting for a flight.
- Johannes (9/5): Quiet, friendly getaway - After a couple of days in central Chiang Mai, Insight Hostel offered me a quiet spot to relax and recharge. The staff is exceptionally friendly, everything is very clean and safe. The nearby university neighborhood provides cheap and creative coffee shops and restaurants. The only downside for me was the nearby airport. It was quiet during the night -- but you'll definitely hear starting planes in the morning and evening.
- Rashni (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessie (8/5): If you are not looking for anything luxurious the value is unbeatable. - The value is unbeatable. The location is very quiet and the facilities are well-lit and air conditioned. There are mosquitos and housekeeping was not on duty during the day.
- Corina (9/5): Superb - Close to wat pha lat walkable as downhill on t he way back, out of the city so peaceful Nothing to complain about regarding yhe accommodation
- Constanza (8/5): Comfortable beds and clean rooms - Quiet and peaceful place . Close to many meditation centers Bike service was not functioning
- Constanza (8/5): Beautiful , calm and clean rooms - Quiet and very clean room . Perfect to escape the sounds of the city and conectado with nature The bike service that they offered didn’t worked when I wanted to use it
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Esther (8/5): Nice affordable place - nice and clean place. There is an area for eating, so cutlery and water is provided. A little hard to find despite using Google maps. Our thai driver called the property and it turned out to be near a meditation Center. It would be useful to have a signboard near the entrance of the hostel itself. The staff also couldn’t speak English and tried to give us dorm beds despite our booking. Fortunately it was quickly resolved after she called her manager.
- Juan (8/5): Very good -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lots of green space and places for meditation. Nice staffs and excellent Futon Mattress.
- Pim (10/5): - Insight Hostel was very calm and relaxing. While its small and has less activities compared to others in Chiangmai, it was perfect for me to sit back with nature and relax. The environment was amazing with big trees and all traditional houses was great. Ultimately I ended up with fond memories of a place with staff that made me feel like family.
THIS IS NOT A HIGH ENERGY/ACTIVE but WONDERFUL SLOW LIFE accommodation.
- Atikom (10/5): Calm and nice environment. - This place is near wat umong, doi Suthep. It's situated in Pimokemuk Institutute, The Meditation Retreat Center, so calm and nice environment. If you look for a peaceful hotel, I really recommend.
