Guest Reviews
- Alastair (8/5): Bute break - Our room was clean and had tea/ coffee making facilities. Toiletries were also provided.
The view out our window was of the castle. Good location. Hotel requires some updating and there are a few stairs to the rooms.
- Elizabeth (6/5): - Hotel could be done with upgrading toilets and shower facilities
- Anthony (4/5): - Idea place to stay when playing golf at the rothesay course.. hotel is very close to the ferry terminal
- Andrew (2/5): - I actually couldn’t check in as I was attending a wedding but couldn’t check in as the wedding was at 3pm and so was the check in time so I paid £90 for nothing. Pure raging
- THOMAS (2/5): - Never stayed in the property.
- Steven (10/5): - Clean honest room with all the amenities you would need
- Elizabeth (6/5): - Hotel staff lovely. Hotel very run down could do with an upgrade.
- Anna (6/5): - There was no staff available when we arrived at 5.30pm. Phoned the number given but it went to voicemail and no one returned the call
The shower did not work and there were no staff available to ask for help
- Marlyn (4/5): Poor service - The hotel was locked when we arrived. No one was there!! There was a mobile number which we called to be told staff were on their break!!
Apart from this chap who arrived to give us our key. Didnt see anyone. Left our key in room when we were leaving as didnt know what to do with it.Very very poor service.
- Edward (2/5): - Dirty no staff go to another place for breakfast
Wouldn't recommend
- Allyson (8/5): - Angela was wonderful. The man?? not so much. Complained about my having a double booking and canceling twice. I don't know what he was referring to.
- John (8/5): John coyle - Good friendly staff clean. Nice meals recommend to any one
- Margaret (2/5): - The description for this hotel is very misleading. it says: The front desk is open daily from 8am - 7:30pm. Front desk will greet guests on arrival.
I arrived at about 3pm to find the hotel locked up. On phoning the hotel, I was told to go to a different hotel. Someone took me back to the Esplanade and checked me in. I also had to go to the other hotel for breakfast and to check out. This was just inconvenient for me, but for someone with mobility issues would have been completely unacceptable and the hotel should not misrepresent the position in the listing.
Other issues relating to the listing:
No bottled water in the room
Very limited toiletries in the room (soap only)
As well as the issues with the listing I had the following issues:
The bathroom light wasn’t working
Only one time was offered for breakfast
The room was very, very noisy.
On the noise issue, I expected some noise as the hotel is located on the front. My room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the castle. It overlooked a small square which was extremely noisy until around 10pm. In addition, a drunk fellow guest kept me up from 1:30am despite my earplugs.
The staff at this hotel were lovely, but I definitely don’t recommend it.
- Anthony (2/5): - Shockingly poor for the money
- Craig (10/5): Great service and good breakfast - Staff were very helpful and received a free upgrade as they were overbooked. Room was very comfortable and the breakfast was good.
- Lucy (10/5): lovely hotel - We got moved to the sister hotel the Victoria as the esplanade was closed . The hotel was great . Staff are all lovely . Food was amazing. Definitely will go back . Thanks
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A standard overnight, cold room with window not able to shut , was hanging down slightly from the top, thin curtains with no heater turned on for arrival, cold through the night, early loud delivery noises
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice and central. Good price. Clean and tidy. Excellent breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cosy enough, Friendly staff, nice food, big enough rooms
- Jeff (10/5): - Plessent staff, well positioned for all amenities
- Verified traveler (2/5): - They roof had a leak and wasn’t fixed before we arrived so the room was smelling a bit. Shared bathroom wasn’t ideal and there were no shampoo or shower gel provided. The kitchen staff got our breakfast order wrong which wasn’t ideal either as we had plans early to check into another hotel that morning. The lady who checked us in couldn’t be nicer which was the best part of the hotel. We also had to check in at a bar which is unusual and it took a while to get someone and then to show us to the room. There is also no iron or hairdryer provided in the room and we were not advised at check in if any were avaliable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Being right by the ferry terminal was extremely convenient and views from the hotel window were fantastic. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, helping me to secure my push bike overnight
- James (10/5): - Food really good as was location, big comfy rooms although a little old and dated but would stay again.
- Paul (2/5): Could be so much better - The Bad - The Windows did not close correctly so the room was unbelievably cold. the radiator in the room took 4 hours to bring the room from artic to warm. the quilt on the bed was 5 tog and totally unsuitable for winter use. I required to depart at 0700 and was told breakfast was served at 0900 and there would be no one available. Evening meal - unless you were there before 1945 meals would not be served - as I had an evening meeting to attend which finished at 2030 no meal was available. The TV required a digital to analogue converted which was frustrating to use and unnecessarily complicated.
The Good - This hotel was spotlessly clean, as was the room, the welcome was warm and friendly, The Wifi was excellent.
It has obviously been a good hotel in the past but now requires some serious renovation.
