Guest Reviews
- Thea (7/5): -
- Peter (9/5): - It's location is close to the West Highland Way
- Martin (4/5): Shabby hotel - Locatie is mooi. Bar redelijk. Echt shabby hotel.
- jerry (9/5): -
- Alec (1/5): Had fun, But no thanks to the hotel. Several of my group had no hot water. Only early evening. At £200 per room! - Dryer than camping in the rain. Possibly the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. But at least had good company and dried out. The 2 young staff made some effort but are clearly unsupported by non existent management. You sense they took over the place, renovated to the bare minimum, and seek to make as much profit as they can before moving on.
- Tobias (1/5): - I recommend to avoid this place. Visible and stinking mold in the bath room. No hot water in the building. We were directed to use a container in thr backyard for shower. Staff already knew about these issues but nothing they could do. Not cooperative on refunds. Not going there ever again.
- Helen (6/5): Adequate. Pleasant staff but overpriced compared with better hotels elsewhere on West Highland Way - Decent size room. No hot water in the bath/shower - previous guests had also mentioned this. Breakfast wasn't up to much considering the price of the hotel.
Kamer vervallen. Badkamer vies. Bad stuk. Wastafel liep niet door. Gordijnen hingen scheef en los
- Amanda (10/5): Seen large horned deer - Comfortable, secure, homely. Would like to have the option of a walk in shower. Not a tub and over head shower.
- Donald (4/5): not as relaxing as intended - Breakfast -- fried egg cool and hard yoke. sausage was cold, no wi-fi breakfast, only had one . bed very uncomfortable
- Paul (1/5): Terrible go somewhere else until it’s sorted - The fish and chips were pretty nice The staff were mostly rude, the room smelled, the tea making facilities in the room were not replenished for the next day, the hallway was like something from a horror attraction, the room was not very clean . I stayed one night in a cabin, it was awful ( cabin number 10) no remote for tv, plug socket broken and potentially dangerous. The cabin was pretty much a shed with a bunk in it. For the price they charge you expect better.
- John (2/5): A tired and rundown establishment. - Pleasant view from the bar terrace was the only redeeming feature Shabby and looking sadly neglected. Desperately in need of a refresh. Dreadful WiFi. Grubby bedroom carpets. Noisy plumbing - no washbasin plug. Mediocre food and very limited breakfast options.
- Mike (6/5): Location was good and we were grateful for the last minute availability. - Spacious room and en-suite. Cooked breakfast was a bit sparse- given we were on an active holiday.
- Laila (7/5): - Breakfast could be better. Dinner was poor quality.
- Scott (10/5): - Massive storm was hitting area so we couldn’t get to intended destination in isle of skye. They were our saviours letting us stay even though the was no power. Eternally grateful.
- Roxana (2/5): -

- jessica (6/5): - Rooms are to a high standard. Shower and bath are decent. It is clean. Location is out of this world! Had breakfast both days first day was okay (sausage wasnt cooked) next day was good. Not sure it was worth the £50 but not many places to eat locally. One of the staff members were rude , rest were brilliant. Could do with some maintenance in certain areas - hallway needs some attention, there was broken glass in the carpark and a shattered window. Dogs were left to bark until late but this isnt a reflection on the hotel.
- Leigh-Ann (10/5): - loved it all, the views, the room, the staff were all amazing nothing
- Armada1991 (3/5): I'd not stay here if you had the choice - Location of the hotel was great, food was ok for the price, staff were nice No hot drinks available at the bar
Room had a wall covered in questionable stains behind the bed.
Shower was held up with electrical tape.
No bath plug.
Shower screen didn't fit so the bathroom got soaked
Uncomfortable bed
Pillows were lumpy and falling apart inside the pillow case
- Douglas (5/5): The reception lobby and restaurant could do with an upgrade (and heating in winter months). If it’s too much hassle to r - The location was perfect. Scenery and views over the Loch were amazing.
Friendly enough staff.
Dog friendly. Hotel lobby, reception, bar and restaurant were cold and lifeless.
Big log burner in bar not lit. Not very inviting.
Food from menu was limited and some choices weren’t available.
- Amy (10/5): - Absolutely stunning room, will stay again!!!!
- West (3/5): Disappointing - Location No hot water in The evening, only came back the morning we were leaving, no staff after 21:00 to help with the water situation. Not a very Scottish feel either.
- Joan (9/5): -
- Roy (1/5): Very little sleep and extremely unhelpful staff who seemed disinterested - No staff on duty during fire alarm at 0145 and no way of contacting member of staff
Stadig intet personale at se.
- Paul (1/5): Failing to refund. - The staff were friendly. The storm had taken out the power 24hrs before our arrival but the company made no effort to warn us. We had no alternative but to stay with no power, heating or breakfast. Asked for a refund which was supposedly approved but three weeks later haven't received a penny.
- Janet (8/5): -
- Matt (4/5): Overpriced and wouldn’t recommend - It was a convenient location with friendly staff. Was overpriced for the low quality of the hotel and rooms. Hotel in general needs major updates.
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Patricia (2/5): -
- sylvie (10/5): - Le cadre, l accueil, la chambre
- Susan (10/5): Gorgeous lake view ! - Cosy & comfortable room with an oscillating fan. Good shower. Good food. Excellent staff. Gorgeous lake view! All good
- David (1/5): Never again!!! - Not much I’m afraid Shower didn’t work at all. Poor service from staff. Asked for another room. Didn’t get any response. Very expensive plus breakfast £12.50 each extra. Gave it a miss
- Antonio (7/5): -
- Evan (8/5): Clean rooms. Good service. Dated decor. Good food. - Staff was very nice. Beautiful view of the loch. Rooms were clean. A bit pricey but... that's what you pay in the highlands / on the WHW. The whole place feels dated.
- Sally (5/5): Over priced and needed some TLC - The view from the Bothy Bar. The hotel needed some TLC especially in the corridors and reception. The rooms were ok the bathrooms needed updating. The price of £198 per night was very expensive for the standard of hotel and breakfast was extra.
- Patrick (1/5): Don't stay here, there are better places in the area with better customer service. - Nothing DON'T STAY HERE. BETTER OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN THE AREA.
Storm Floris impacted all travel (planes, trains, cars, roads) the day before we were supposed to arrive and made it so that we were unable to make our booking. Even though I gave notice to cancel (citing government shutdowns and travel recommendations), they did not approve any refund or partial refund. Other places we booked for the week (via Expedia and Airbnb), one booking with less notice still gave us refunds after the cancellation period (as a goodwill gesture) due to the storm's impact. There were power outages in the area for some time after the storm and travel was extremely unsafe.
The inflexibility of this hotel and Booking.com is very disappointing. I would not recommend staying here. There are other options in the area that provide better customer service, because based on my experience with talking to them, they are not helpful and desperate for business (since they feel the need to take 100% value from a booking during a severe storm). Always go with a place that offers great customer service, because you know they apply that to the rest of the experience. Sadly, that was not reflected in my dealings with MacDonald Hotel.
- Laura (3/5): Overpriced - It was on the WHW Tired facilities, bad food and terrible service. Rooms far too hot
- Kathryn (5/5): Rooms need screens on windows. - Beautiful and well located on west highland way The rooms were an inferno without means to open the windows and let the cool air in without also inviting the midges in. Even the hostels I’ve stayed in on the route have screens. It was over 28c/82f in the room. And the bar restaurant was even warmer. The front desk said management were considering air conditioners in the rooms. They have no excuse not to have already installed window screens though. Global warming is real and heat waves should be expected as the new normal.
I built a makeshift screen by cutting a head net and using athletic tape.
- Michael (5/5): The accommodations served our purpose, nothing more nothing less. - Views were beautiful. Very quiet. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Bar tender was fantastic. Rooms were very very hot. Layout of the bathroom was less than ideal resulting in water all over the floor from the shower.
- Pavel (8/5): -
- Mattie (9/5): -
- Alasdair (9/5): Staff were excellent - Good choice Nothing
- Emma (4/5): OK if your lost in Scotland and desperately need a last minute place to stay. Overpriced and staff probably aren’t taken - Friendly and efficient staff during check in, meals were OK but delivered quickly. Decent sized room, bath salts in bathroom. Amenities all worked. Midge screens were all in working order. Stayed in the hotel not cabins. Accepts dogs. Ok so I think when you stay here you have to recognise that this is an ex aluminium town, which closed in 2000. The town is trying to encourage tourism. It’s in a great location but I think they operate on the basis that poor reviews don’t really matter as most of their clientele are once and done, as they’re either climbing Ben Nevis or walking the West Highland Way. When I looked up the owner to see if this was a small business and were struggling financially- they do actually own many hotels throughout Scotland so there really is no excuse for not injecting a bit of cash into this place.
There seemed to be a lack of staff, they were all helpful. But seemed to be rushing around. Every time I asked for something the contactless machine was in my face asking for payment. Not really the experience expected for the cost.
We just needed a quick stop over as we were coming down from the north, we had a hotel room which was big, everything worked but was a bit grubby. The floor was a bit grimey and there was dirt in things like light switches that if I’m honest made me feel a bit like I was crawling. For £218 +£10 for a dog £37.50 for breakfast and £53 for dinner I did feel robbed. Over £300! This was almost 1/3 of the cost of my previous weeks holiday at an amazing place.
I haven’t stayed in the cabins but we saw people queuing outside for showers getting eaten alive by midges in the morning. I am very glad we didn’t choose to stay in those.
There are some stairs up to the room, something must have happened to the electrics because it was pitch black, the lights weren’t working and the emergency lighting wasn’t even on. I must admit of all the issues this was the worst, I didn’t notice this until the morning of departure but the safety implications of this are quite serious.
Breakfast was ok but very small portions. You had to book an exact slot between 7-9 which isn’t always great on holiday, and choose your breakfast the night before.
- Catherine (4/5): Smelly, damp, dreary but mostly nice staff and good position. - Staff in bar and restaurant were lovely. Man in Reception very brusque and unwelcoming.
View from bar and restaurant is great. Food was quite good and breakfast cooked to order. Reception area very drab and man on Reception desk unwelcoming. Stairs up to bedrooms and corridor between bedrooms very smelly.
Bedrooms themselves clean but smelly and damp.
Room extremely hot at night despite fan.
Whole hotel felt like a Youth Hostel rather than a hotel.
Very poor value as not particularly cheap.
Worstplace we stayed on West Highland Way.
- Neil (8/5): Very good - Room was clean, very peaceful and in a stunning location. Not the hotels fault but it was so hot in the room even with the window open and small fan running.
- Karademir (6/5): Pleasant -
- Francis (5/5): Passable - Location Most expensive hotel of my trip and tbh not much better than a bog standard premier inn type of place. Expensive for what it is.
- Victoria (5/5): Comfy bed. But pricey for what it was - Location is great. Bed was comfy and breakfast was good. It was expensive for the quality - bathroom was a bit plasticky, and the room smelled Smokey. If it had been a more fair price you wouldn’t be bothered, but I feel I overpaid
- Jill (10/5): Steps from the West Highland Way! - The room was newly updated and very clean and comfortable. I had a view of the waterfall from my room and the staff were extremely friendly. Food was good and there’s a nice deck out back on the restaurant that looks over the loch. It was steps from the W. Highland Way making it the perfect location for me. I was check-in was a little bit earlier, but I showed up very early and the manager was able to accommodate me with an early check-in, which was nice
- Stephen (5/5): Comfortable enough with decent food but the place is a bit run down. - Food was good. Service was good. Staff were good. Hotel is in need of maintenance and refit. The taps leaked and the vent in the toilet kept dripping water on the floor.
- Sharon (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hamish (6/5): Okay for one night - Okay place to stay Limited menu in evening and breakfast disappointing
- David (5/5): Passable -
- Guy (4/5): Disappointing - the location for sure we have got fleas on the bed (most likely the cover, we saw the bites the day after), and it was not mosquitos!
very slow service at the dinner
- Jacqueline (9/5): Simple food options of good quality. An ideal location and friendly staff - Great location and friendly staff Baggage store area a bit GRU by
- James (2/5): Disappointing - Location, just off the WHW Considering it was the most expensive stay during the trip I was expecting a half decent hotel. After receiving the keys I went up a run down corridor to my room. Room didn't seem that it had been thoroughly cleaned, dated and poorly maintained. Walls that thin you could hear the people in the next room going the toilet. Looks like the staff are staying in run down caravans in the carpark. Seems that hotel are charging very high price due to limited other options in the area.
- Cal (6/5): Pleasant - Bothy Bar was good, staff were friendly. Couldn’t use bathroom fan or open my room window, so room became very warm and stuffy.
- Sacha (8/5): Excellent place to stay in Kinlochleven - Nice sized room with comfortable bed. Had a bath with shower above which is unusual but good for those who want a soak. Bathroom a bit dated but bedroom had been upgraded. Excellent service in the bar which has fantastic views, breakfast very nice. Located a few meters from the start of the last day of the West highland way. Externally looks a bit dated but don't let this put you off.
- Harrison (9/5): Superb - Great location for the west Highland way
- Christina (5/5): It was a bed for the night after a long day hiking but it had a neglected vibe. - Breakfast was pleasant and had everything we wanted The hotel appeared to be short staffed as we only saw 2 members of staff and no one in reception, although there were some people wandering in and out of the kitchen area but were very unsuitably dressed for work in a kitchen. The outside of the hotel is very scruffy and untidy, the reception area is distinctly unwelcoming and the whole place looks like it needs some money spending on smartening it up.
- Elspeth (5/5): Passable - Shabby. Could do with an upgrade. No ambience. Very expensive for what you get.
No hot water at 10pm
- Megan (3/5): Poor - The boiler was broken so there was ok hot water in the rooms. This can’t be helped - things happen. The campsite showers were working but not in the best conditions. The rooms have been finished nicely and are comfortable but the heaters did not work. The breakfast was poor.
The two staff that seemed to be doing everything from front of house and cooking were run off of their feet. Working hard but with far far too much for them to be doing.
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (3/5): I hate to say it but if you can avoid it do so. Afternoon or Evening drink absolutely yes. - It’s in the location I needed to stop at hiking on the West Highland Way. The view down the Loch is stunning. For the price which is close to Bridge of Orchy hotel price this a pretty scandalous. The quality of food is very poor, very very obviously frozen and reheated. Breakfast was awful dry. The furnishings are 30 years old. The staff are lovely but the team is very very thin.
- Kirsty (8/5): Very good - Good place to stop over on WHW. Very quiet location on the edge of the village. Bathtub a bonus. Room was adequate for our needs for a couple of nights.
- Faye (9/5): Stunning views and location, amazing value for money! - My best friend and I took a girly road trip and we picked this hotel for the location… it was amazing. I had my dog, Rupert, with me you would never know we were in a pet friendly room it was spotless! We had our meal in the restaurant and our breakfast and honestly, couldn’t fault it! Highly recommend! The only thing was the bed was alittle uncomfortable but for a one night stay it’s perfect!
- Jackie (8/5): great value for money, would stay here again - ideal location, just beside the loch. Our room was clean and comfortable with a bath and a shower. We were there out of season so the hotel was very quiet but I can imagine it would be very busy later in the year as Kinlochleven is well known for walking and hill climbing. We didnt have a meal there but the menu looked good
- Yente (7/5): Beautiful location! Close to the lake. Very friendly staff. Cold showers if the hot water runs out. - Beautiful location! Close to the lake. Very friendly staff. Cold showers if the hot water runs out.
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Rich (10/5): Fabulous value - Easy check in, Ean comfy room. Hownshower after a VERY cold day in the hills! Nothing
- Paula (7/5): Comfortable stay - Clean and comfortable stay. The rooms were not cleaned daily, bins were not emptied etc. I think with a few small tweaks this hotel could get some great reviews. Also, the curtains needed fixing. A bit of maintenance would go a long way.
- Sharon (8/5): Very good -
- Vasileva (5/5): Does the job for one night - A place to spend one night if you have no other option The smell, Nothing to eat after 5pm in a radius of 30 miles
- Charles (3/5): Poor - Comfortable Bed & Friendly Staff Absolutely unsuitable for winter accomodation, the full hotel was freezing cold, the bedroom was like walking into a chiller when I arrived & the inadequate tiny panel wall heater made little to no difference to overall room temperature. Would not recommend anyone to stay here over winter months, the lounge area wasnt even heated but did have a wood burning stove that wasn't able to be used for whatever reason. Such a shame as the hotel did look as if it would be ok during warmer months.
- Angela (4/5): The hotel bar was nice, the view was good from the parking lot, but overall spend a little more money and go somewhere e - The bar was pretty nice and well priced, and in a good location since it’s close to the waterfall The room smelled like cooking food the minute we walked in, and the shower had hair from the last guests in it. The shower also didn’t have a curtain, just a glass cutout and it spilled water all over the floor. The staff was ok, but reception was closed and we had a very confused looking staff member check us in, almost acting surprised at us being there. We had to pay for the breakfast the night before and what we got was terrible. The eggs were completely rubbery and disgusting, the sausage was tasteless, and there was only a tiny coffee pot which had lukewarm coffee at the bar.
- Gareth (8/5): Very good -
- Marc (3/5): Very poor - Price was cheap, location was excellent for accessing the West Highland Way, bed was comfortable and Bedding appeared clean and there was a large tv, seems the budget went in the tv not the rest of the room No hotnwatee, bathrooms were grubby, Tables were not clean, glasses were dirty
- Lisa (9/5): stunning location - very comfortable bed. spotless room and location was stunning hope to be back. room was huge. good facilities. stunning scenery surrounding the hotel couldn't fault anything
- Tom (9/5): Superb -
- Stephaniie (4/5): Bathroom was disgusting -
- Deb (9/5): A Great Stay - Great location, comfortable beds, hot shower and great meals in the Bothy Bar. Breakfast was delicious. Staff were courteous and professional
- Brenda (8/5): Very good - Was comfortable! Short stay. Rooms were clean and fulfilled our needs. Took forever to get checked in. Lobby area could use a face lift.
- Shane (10/5): Exceptional - Great place for walking the Highland Way. Appreciate the stay!
- Simeon (5/5): Passable -
- Abhinav (8/5): Very good - Clean and well maintained. Food was not good.
- Annette (8/5): Comfy stay - Hotel was easy to find, walked right into it from the West Highland Walk. The codes on the drying room and baggage location were tricky, they opened different ways and there was no shelter from the rain while trying to open them, could be done better.
- Alvin (1/5): Bad -
- Raymond (7/5): Could do so much better - Manager, lady who we didn’t get her name was outstanding and kept the place running. Views were outstanding Breakfast was chaos
- Daisy (1/5): Don’t stay here. - I booked a room on booking.com and when I arrived the receptionist made me wait for 10 minutes before acknowledging me. He then said Booking.com had made a mistake and they didn’t have a room for me. The atmosphere was awful, it wasn’t clean. The staff were rude and unhelpful and the coffee was cold.
- Daisy (1/5): Don’t stay here - This is one of two hotels in Kinlochlevan. The staff were rude, the coffee was cold and the hotel was not clean. Don’t stay here.
