Guest Reviews
- Makiko (8/5): -
- Cate (6/5): Cosy and warm but expensive at peak time for basic accommodation far away from services. - The couple that run the accommodation are very sweet, helpful and happy to drive us around. The heating was good and it was very warm and cosy. As we were there at peak time for skiing, we paid a LOT of money for what is really VERY BASIC accommodation that is not well serviced. As there is no food apart from a basic breakfast (extra cost) available at the property, you have to go out to eat and there's very little around to walk to, you really need a car. There's no kitchen facilities for guests apart from hot water from a machine and a shared fridge, so nowhere to assemble a meal or crockery or utensils to use. There is no shower in the hostel and you have to use the onsen over the road, which some guests might not be comfortable with, although we quite liked.
- ALAN (10/5): -
- Charlie (6/5): The hosts were absolutely charming. However, getting a good night's sleep was next to impossible. - The couple running the pension were super nice and hospitable. The onsen across the street was warm and a great touch after skiing. The wi-fi worked quite well. There was a common room which was good to get out of the room. It was walking distance to restaurants. The beds were so uncomfortable. There was no shower in the actual pension. You had to go across the street to the onsen to clean up. The walls were thin enough to hear someone snoring in the room next door. Also, you can hear exactly when everyone wakes up (around 7 for breakfast) as the doors slam and the floors creak.
- Andrew (8/5): - This place is super cute and the location is great. The hosts are maybe the nicest people you'll ever meet. So helpful and gracious. I'd happily stay here again Everything is a little dated though still clean. The showers across the street in the onsen isn't ideal but it works fine. Onsen could use some love

- Jill (10/5): clean, comfortable, good location for Myoko Kogen - My sister and I went to Myoko Kogen for a ski week. We stayed at this Pension. Papa was so generous to pick us up at the train station and return us at the end of our trip. He was also really good about helping us to the 2 neighboring ski resorts. I will say if you want to ski Seki or resorts outside of town, he unfortunately doesn't have time. The bus system wasn't working either. The breakfast was standard, good for the value and prompt. The location was walking distance to places to eat and a bus stop. The hosts were extremely kind. Pension was perfect for what we were looking for. I didn't like that the bus system that was suppose to be available, was indeed not and we got stuck skiing the local resorts only. That has no reflection on Papa's experience, just general to the area. If I go back, I would definitely stay there again.
- Mackay (10/5): Feels like being home - Moom and papa. are so friendly and helpful.
the onsen bath is especially soothing after a day riding the snow.
- Addison (10/5): -

- Li (9/5): Warm , cosy and welcoming. - We loved our stay here, Papas was warm
and cosy, with comfortable rooms. We were made to feel very welcome. Everything was provided that we could need.
We also loved the traditional Onsen experience.
- Jeremy (9/5): Thank you for a lovely stay - The hosts - a lovely Japanese couple - were very kind and helpful. There are limited facilities within walking distance (a small shop, 3 restaurants) but they are very happy to collect you from the station, run you to the ski areas, take you to a cash point etc so you don't need a car.
The hotel has its own small onsen which is really lovely and a good intro to this aspect of Japanese culture. Nothing but fair to say it is not the ideal location if you want to walk to vibrant bars etc
- Jian Zhi (10/5): - Papa took care of us really really well, very cozy, well run lodge. I really enjoyed my time here, especially the onsen after ski! That was amazing. -
- Nicolas (8/5): Very good -
- Lucia (10/5): Exceptional - We loved everything about our stay! Our hosts welcomed us with exceptional hospitality and helped us solved any problems. The onsen was the perfect way to end each day.
- Georgia (10/5): Exceptional - Very homely and accommodating hosts. Onsen was great. Rooms warm. Breakfast was very good. Bit far from the main town but Papa drove us to the ski fields daily and there’s a few restaurants within a 10min walk.
- Charlie (10/5): Papa Moomin's is the best! - Papa's was wonderful! A unique and cozy place to stay in a lovely ski town. Papa was so friendly and helpful, driving us to and from the ski hill, and serving a delicious breakfast each morning!
- Rowan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jing (10/5): Exceptional -

- Nicholas (10/5): Absolutely wonderful owners and pension - Classic charming pension with the most friendly owners! The private onsen across the street is incredible, I had it to myself every night, and there is an option for breakfast. The room was perfect for two of us, and Papa was so kind to drive us to and from the Myokokogen station and the mountains, and also on some errands which was so kind. It feels like you are stepping into a place that can’t be created, a piece of personality. All good! Note: if you don’t have a vehicle, there are a few restaurants within 20 minutes walking distance. Amazing izakaya, lunch cafe, coffee shop, and a small grocer.
- Evan (10/5): Wonderful and cosy! - Cosy and sweet accomodation, good beds and rooms, very clean and comfortable. Very cultural Japanese stay with an Onsen exclusive to the guests. Papa Moomin was able to help us get to the ski resorts in the morning and back in the afternoon, and there were some delicious breakfast and dinners which could be ordered at the accomodation. Just a walk away from some lovely restaurants nearby as well. Ski resorts nearby are some of the most affordable I have ever seen and the Japow can be really excellent around Myoko. Highly recommend it was a wonderful stay with incredibly kind and wonderful owners! If you want to use the onsen you cross the road, it’s an older style onsen but it’s an experience!
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (10/5): Incredibly kind hosts and a lovely guest house - Papa was so lovely. It was a beautiful traditional guest house. I had breakfast too and it was lovely. I also really appreciated lifts too and from ski school and to the train station. It was honestly such a beautiful stay and I will be back. For any solo travellers, it was a very family vibe and I felt very welcome. Thank you Papa! Nothing!
- Biljana (10/5): Great stay - fantastic hosts - The Japanese senior couple managing the pension are genuinely the sweetest people we could have dreamed of. Moomin Papa picked us up at the station at arrival and dropped us off (super early in the morning) after checkout. He drove us and the other guests in the morning to the ski resorts nearby and was also willing to pick us up in the afternoon. He was also great at giving dinner recommendations.
The pension is simple and welcoming, breakfast is great and all we needed for a full day on the slopes. The onsen is a bit old but we didn’t mind. If you have very long hair it could take a while to dry with the available hairdryer - just to keep in mind.
Rooms are nice and warm and the beds are comfortable.
WiFi works well.
Overall I would say it was a beautiful stay, the hosts and their care in everything they did made the experience 100 times better. Highly recommend! We loved everything
- Ingrid (8/5): Very good -
- Yi (10/5): Exceptional - Papa is very helpful and send us to Sugi to ski everyday and bring us at town for dinner. Nothing.
- Ming (9/5): Superb -
- Pamela (10/5): Lovely stay with the most amazing hosts! Thank you papa and mama! - Comfy, felt like a home. Private onsen across the street. There is a lovely public onsen at the Lime Resort which is walking distance from the lodge. Location. Bit far from town but papa was so wonderful and drove me everywhere!
- Melika (6/5): Good for the price - Very closed to nearby snow resorts.
Floor heating, warm room.
good price.
The drying room is located outside and offers easy access from the car. Walls wear too thin, your conforts depends on other guests.
No shower room in the property, you have to cross the road to take a bath.
The owner was a bit weird, when i went to check out, he just took the key from me without any greeting or confirmtation that checkout was completed, but started cleaning the table...
- Mackay (9/5): Superb - Moominpapa
wi go out of their way to make your time here as comfortable as possible.
I really enjoy the natural onsen after a day snowboarding.
will always stay here when in Myoko ski areas.0
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional -
- ashleyaitken87 (10/5): Amazing free Onsen to use! - My favourite part about this pension was the onsen that was free to use. It was boiling hot and so good for the body after a big day on the mountain skiing. This hotel was 10 minute driving distance to the closest ski mountain and a 10 minute drive to the town centre where there were lots of bars and restaurants. There was also a restaurant inside the pension and some more a short walk away. The staff were so friendly and accommodating and the beds were really cosy!
- Connor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Connor (10/5): Comforting and Homely - Great location, lovely staff Nothing
- Thomas (10/5): Mama and Papa Moomin are the best! - Mama and Papa couldn't have been kinder or more gracious hosts. Their hospitality was exceptional. They cooked delicious breakfast every morning and, will also cook an incredible full course dinner upon request. Which we did. Very affordable and excellent meals. They were able to communicate to us in English better than most and even made reservations for us at some of the local restaurants. They know all the best spots! We had a rental car, but they were even shuttling guests around the area. They are kind and genuinely care about their guests experience.
Rooms were perfect size for what we needed, more importantly, beds were comfortable!
I would absolutely stay there again, and look forward to coming back soon. Thank you!
- Luke (10/5): Nice and quiet spot - Warm and friendly, onsen, great dinner.
- Kiki (10/5): We made new friends in papa’s house. I think it's a valuable memory. Thank you Moomie papa & mama💓 - Papa drove us everywhere we wanted. We appreciate this ☺️
Papa provided an onsen. No elevator and need to take shower out of the house. The onsen was not as hot as I wanted.
- Lay (9/5): Superb -
- Jon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Cute and cosy home from home in the mountains. - Pension Moomin Papa is a very cute and cosy home from home. It was very warm with lovely underfloor heating, clean and tidy. You can order home cooked breakfast and dinner. The other travellers were nice and friendly. I loved my stay here!
- Tegan (10/5): Beautiful house, great brekky, lovely spot near Sugi - Papa Moomin and his lovely wife were super lovely and accommodating The only small thing that was a little awkward was not having a shower inside the house, but the onsen over the road was wonderful!
- Ashley (10/5): Great stay and friendly staff! - The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the location is a short drive to the ski fields. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, and the onsen is great and free to use. Would recommend and definitely stay again. Thank you.
- Nicolene (10/5): Great hospitality! - Everything! What an incredible stay! Moomin Papa and Mama spared no effort in ensuring everything was absolutely perfect. Not only was there a convenient shuttle bus stopping right outside Pension Moomin Papa to transport guests to the ski resorts, but whenever the shuttle didn't reach our desired destination, Moomin Papa graciously drove us wherever we needed to be. The private onsen provided a rejuvenating experience after a full day of skiing. Additionally, a delicious Western-style breakfast was provided every morning for only 1000 yen, adding to the exceptional value of our stay Nothing.
- Michele (10/5): Perfect - Best place to be! Thank you Papa
- Francis (10/5): Pension Moomin Papa felt like home, lovely stay with lovely hosts. - When I arrived at Moomin Papa I immediatly felt home. The place is located in a little Onsen town full of chalets and covered in snow, it’s litterally like in a fairytale. I had a dorm but since the place wasn’t busy I had a room to myself. The room was super cozy and really warm, so really confortable. Contacting the host was super easy through the app, they are quickly replying and are making sure everything is allright, all the time. The onsen was a big plus, I really enjoy relaxing in it after a long day skiing. Also, the breakfast was amazing and when I told them I was vegetarian they adjust the menu for me. I really enjoyed my stay, Moomin and Papa are lovely people. I would come back anytime. The only downside was the location, which is quite far from the main town. But there are shuttles, and walkable distance from some good restaurants (Arakin Ramen and Myoko Coffee Co.)
- Melanie (10/5): Exceptional - Great place to stay! Our host was great and very friendly! He was so kind he offered to take us to the ski field in the morning. Drying room was large and warm, onsen was a lovely bonus
- Justin (8/5): Very good -
- Stephane (9/5): Great hosts! - Moomins everywhere! Great food.
- Alexander (9/5): COSY STAY, WARM & FRIENDLY HOSTS - Fantastic hosts, lovely people, nice onsen, ski room was warm, Papa was very helpful with pickups and drop offs, along with providing or determining information I sought. Room was comfortable and warm, laundry facilities available. I would happily return. My only real gripe, is the location and proximity of the property from the "main part" of town, being Kanko/ Onsen. As the property is based in Ike, getting to town was either a 50 minute walk or a taxi/ lift around 10 mins. However, if you are wanting to Ski around Ike or Sugi, this property is well located.
- Laurence (8/5): Very good - Lovely small pension. Unique Onsen house across the road. Friendly and helpful older couple running the pension. A bit too hot in the bedroom but manageable. Toilets down the hall.
- Luca (9/5): Really enjoyed ❄️🏂🥃 - Very cozy place comfortable and always warm !!! Never suffered cold in Papa pension offering a simple Japanese services. Bus stop a cross the pension that rich one of the ski locations but Papa is always available to drop and pick you up where the busses don't reach the other ski destination you have picked for the day. Defiantly will back there. ❄️🏂🇮🇹 Nothing really was a negative point even if for the shower you have to cross the road and access the Onsen House (only for papa customer ) for hot bath and shower . After all you need to understand this old Japanese tradition 😁👍🏻
- Ty (10/5): Mountain Majesty with kindness sprinkled on top!!! - Papa was amazing! He provided transportation to and from the ski resorts (Suginohara and Akakura) was there on time each and every day and took me to town to pick up supplies and food. I felt like part of the family and and Mama is an absolutely amazing cook. There kindness and goodwill exemplifies true Japanese tradition and sincerity! Thank you for your beautiful Hearts Moma and Papa! Beds were a little firm for my taste.
- Stephane (9/5): Fun - Onsen
- Dennis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paulina (10/5): Very friendly and kind owner, great place - I had a wonderful time thanks to the hospitality and amazing support from the hotel owner.
He helped me with transfer from the station to the hotel and was incredibly welcoming. The breakfast was very good. I really enjoyed my time.
- Nicholas (9/5): Superb - Location very convenient. Nice onsen attached for exclusive use of guests. Warm and cosy. Easy parking.
- Cass-a (10/5): Great hosts & traditional experience - Very helpful & lovely hosts. The onsen is great. Papa was happy to give us a lift. He even brought our bags to the train station when we missed the bus back from the snow monkeys.
- Fujiko (8/5): Very good - The onsen. And the breakfast was great. I wish i had asked them to cook us dinner too. The thinner wall.
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional - The owner shows his warmly hospitality. He offered a pickup and drop down service for skiing and Myoko Kogen station. breakfasts and dinners are good ! The location is quite far away from the ski resorts. Not many restaurants are nearby. The nearest one, you need to take six minute's walk.
The onsen is in the other house opposite the lodge. You need to go outside the lodge and get to the onsen.
- Ralph (10/5): Exceptional - the owners are the best hosts ever nothing
- Jene (10/5): Exceptional - Host was so nice giving us a couple of lifts and the place was very tidy and cosy.
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional - super nice hosts, private onsen, heated floors, convenient location. nothing to complain for that price!
- Guillaume (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was kind and took me from and to the station
The room was nice and the onsen was a good plus
- Dylan (10/5): the owners are the nicest people in japan! i would recommend staying there just to have the experience of meeting them! - mumma and dadda moomin papa went out of their way to make my stay enjoyable! they well and truly exceeded my expectations, i would definitely stay there again! it was a bit hard to get around with the busses, i would recommend hiring a car.
