- normanbT8216RM (4/5): If only it lived up to its name! - We were seduced by the name of the hotel indicating that it was Grand and Close to the train station and the town centre. It is close to the Station and it may once have been grand but alas no more. It is a sad, faded place with no real reception. One must check in at the bar. The people were nice and friendly but our double room was on the second floor with no lift just a rickety staircase were some of the stair banister rods were missing. Our allocated room was small and shabby. with no amenities and a poor bathroom. On booking the description included 'toiletries' but all we got was one small soap sachets in a small paper cup. Breakfast was taken in the bar and was pre laid with no choice.

- Stuie (7/5): Did the job for a weary traveller! - This is a classic old French city centre hotel, opposite the railway station. Things are a little 'worn', but it was perfect for one overnight. Limited free parking is available, which is a bonus, and breakfast – typically French – was excellent, the croissants were still warm from the boulangerie! The extra bonus, of course, is the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral just down the road, a magnificent building. The surrounding area is a bit dingy, and on a Sunday evening, dining options within walking distance are pretty limited – a choice, basically of kebab shops and pizza take aways in the main. None of this, of course, is the hotel's fault.
- Mateusz (3/5): Poor -
- ed_coombs (4/5): Erm - no. - We always try to look for positives but as soon as we walked into reception we both had a feeling that it wasn't going to be a good experience.
The receptionist was very pleasant and, while it took a while for him to find the key, had us checked it fairly efficiently and took the full payment up front. We let ourself into our room and it was as we had feared. The room didn't smell very nice (from the days of smoking I suspect) the carpet was grubby, the heating was none existent and there was no hot water. The bathroom was just awful - the shower was right in front of the door so you had to shimmy sideways past it. Next to that was a huge sink which left very little room for the toilet which, unfortunately, had a seat that was barely attached. There were 2 towels, both were thin and of an indeterminate colour - just not nice.
We decided to go out and have a walk around but, being Monday, a lot of places were closed so we made our way back. I thought that I may as well have an early night but the drum and bass beat from the bar put paid to that idea.
I couldn't wait to get out of the place in the morning.
- CambridgeChris19 (4/5): Not unless you have too! - Poor - the word that sums up this hotel. It looks shabby from the outside and shabby on the inside. It states its been refurbished - I think they just added a single coat of paint. We were only there for 1 night and that was enough.
The whole hotel isn't welcoming - the lady on reception was fine but the hall and stairs looked filthy and smelt of smoke. You can't open the windows in the room as its on a main road and there is no air conditioning - so we didn't have the most comfortable nights sleep. The charge was 74euro for 1 night without breakfast - which is very poor value.
Don't stay there unless you have too.
- Shepleyman (4/5): Maybe I'm getting tolerant in my old age! - Let's get down to basics. Evreux is a small town an hour by train outside Paris, deep in Normandie. The cathedral is possibly the best in Europe. Bars and cafes are superb. The Mata Hari restaurant is worth the trip alone.
The Grand Hotel de la Gare was once a little ragged, but they have refurbished it and now it's OK. You need to understand the French and then you will be fine. This is a hotel for people arriving by train. If you have a car you have more choice. My room was clean, the bedding clean, the bathroom clean. Breakfast was meager but excellent coffee from the cafe which is frequented by locals and very pleasant. The bar downstairs is also frequented by locals and their dogs. A wonderful place if you are prepared to absorb the ambiance of a small town French bar cafe. The receptionist also serves in the cafe, but is the epitome of French charm and politeness. My conversation with her was like a free french lesson.
Of course you pay up front. There is no checkout! My room was serviced on day 1. All towels changed etc.
This is real France. Take it or leave it. Price was 125 euro for two nights; about right.
- Tasmin10 (2/5): Never again - Possibly the worst hotel we have ever stayed at! No real reception, book in at bar next door. Restaurant closed for a month. No evidence of refurbishment, shabby. We on second floor up a staircase with a filthy carpet. Room tiny, bedding clean. Bathroom scruffy only towels for one person and toilet not really clean. Good to have a car park. Town quite a walk away and we had to drive around to find somewhere to eat. No staff around that we could see. Sadly this was not a happy experience, nor was it a particularly cheap one.
- Bobcat605 (4/5): Miniscule room - This is one of the few hotels in the town centre but really could do better. The receptionist was disorganized and we had to ask her twice for towels. The room was tiny, barely big enough for a single let alone a double but it was quiet being away from the busy road. The whole place had a rather drab appearance. The location is good, a short walk from the centre and right opposite the train station. There is a private, free carpark with a limited number of spaces but tricky to get into unless you have a Mini! We scraped our car on the wall. Breakfast is taken in the pleasant cafe/cake shop attached to the hotel and is adequate.
- 901Mark901 (2/5): Terrible - This was pre booked as our first over night stop on a motorcycle tour From the UK to Spain. We arrived at 8.45pm to find the receptionist about to go home, so we were lucky??? to have got there when we did. It was insisted we pay in full at check-in, 74 Euros for room and continental breakfast. Restaurant was closed and no restaurants nearby, had to settle for a Dominoes Pizza, couldn't even buy a beer. The room had no welcome tray. tea, coffee etc. No hair drier, no facilities at all, the shower had no where to hook it up so you had to hold it above your head. The shelf above the basin was hanging off the wall. No one in reception to report to so had to put up with it. We were due to stop here again on the way back, We cancelled it and booked in else where.
- barryja (8/5): grand hotel de la gare - We visited this hotel as a group of 9 male golfers and were treated handsomely with a very good deal. The hotel is opposite the rail station and by a main road but the double glazing keeps any noise out of the front facing rooms. The food was superb and the rooms ,though basic, were immaculate and maintained each day as such. The staff at all times couldn't do enough for us.
