- Cathy (10/5): - This was a girls' trip, and since we didn’t have a car, Maritza’s location was absolutely perfect! The hotel is within walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and shopping, making everything so convenient. The daily breakfast was delicious and a great way to start the day. The property is well-kept, and the rooms have been beautifully renovated. We’ll definitely be back for another Pura Vida girls trip!
- CDNMarmalade (10/5): The perfect place in a town with the perfect vibe - Welcome to Jamaica!! Not really but it sure felt like it. The town feels like an English speaking Caribbean island. Considering Limon province's history this is not surprising.
Maritska is very central to everything in Puerto Viejo. There are restaurants, supermarkets, bars and shops all within easy walking distance.
The room was small and somewhat dated. Yet it gave us everything we needed: Bed, shower, fridge, AC. We had chairs outside the room to sit. The hostess is someone special who makes you feel at home and is quick to take care of any problems. We would stay again definitely!
- Marcela (10/5): - Todo muy bien
- Justin (10/5): - I was arriving to Limon after the check in time finished and the reception would be closed but I called and explained the situation and she stayed an extra 45 mins to make sure I wouldn’t be stranded. Thanks hotel Maritza!!
- Shannon (10/5): Exceptional -
- kiria (10/5): - The room was comfortable and clean.
- ALJ2221 (8/5): Very basic but good air con and clean - Very basic, but clean, comfy and centrally located. Rooms had a fridge and very good air con. The location was so central and it felt very safe as was gated and locked. No room service but You can ask reception for fresh towels etc. Nothing fancy at all, but clean and good air con makes it worthwhile.

- Daniëlle (10/5): Wonderful stay in Puerto Viejo - The location was very good; it was close to the beach. The room was clean and the personnel was very helpful and kind. We had a tour in the morning and would be back around check-out time. The staff told us to leave our luggage in the room and that we could freshen up before continuing our journey. The breakfast was at a different location where also locals come. It was a great restaurant and the breakfast was delicious.
- Simone (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Monica (8/5): - This property is a historical place. Anna is the best.
- Peter M (10/5): - Wonderful experience and reception were kind and accommodating. It was a lovely relaxing stay. It was also very secure.
- SouthvilleGuestHouse (10/5): Excellent budget hotel! - Stayed here with a large group and came back the night before by early bus as it's right next to the bus stop to get back to San Jose. Beautiful setting with hammocks outside the rooms, very clean, good wifi, perfectly situated in the village, close to the beach and all amenities and I paid £30 for a Saturday night. Rooms have a TV and AC unlike the £140 a night hotel I stayed in down the road!
- leroyr49 (8/5): Good, low budget hotel and good value - It’s a low budget hotel but I gave it 4 stars because AC is super cold, wifi is good. Parking is great. Location 30 seconds from beach and bars and restaurants. Community kitchen if you want to get chummy. While I’m on vacation I don’t want to work which includes cooking. The restaurant they partner with, Pan Pay has good food. What I liked the best, is when I sent a fb msg or WhatsApp msg the owner responded fast. I’m big into good communication. They have gated security too. I had to leave at two in the morning and I was told that my key would open the gate so just to be sure I checked it and sure enough the key only opened a portion of the gate that would allow you to walk through it but not drive through it which would have caused me to miss my flight as reception is not open at night. I had my car out before that but just an example to be sure you understand the details of things where you stay as there will be language barriers
- Ricardo (8/5): - Great location last minute great but it is what it is
- Miguel (8/5): Volvería a hospedarme. - Muy contento durante mi estadía. El personal es muy cortés y amable. Las instalaciones son adecuadas y están muy limpias.
- Shawna (10/5): Hotel in Paradise - Maritza hotel never disappoints. It’s my go to when my family stays in Puerto Viejo. The owner Ana is a sweetheart and is always helpful. The hotel is now offering cereal, bread coffee and tea in the mornings. It’s a great touch.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I didn't like that we couldn't control the shower water. It was either cold or hot. Also, beds were too hard. Overall, people were very nice. They maintain it clean. Air conditioner was excellent.
- Melissa (10/5): Family Friendly - We love the owner! She is very friendly and helpful! The hotel is safe, cute, clean, and quiet. It is a great location - to be able to walk everywhere, including the beach. Parking is gated at night. We have choosen to stay here for the last two summers.
- lizzle213v (10/5): Best place in the Caribbean - Hotel maritza located at only 4 hrs drive from the capital of costa rica
Is a great place to spend with your family and friends is only steps away from the beach and only minutes away from the most beatifull beaches in the Caribbean coast of costa rica
- I2333QQjordanr (10/5): Fantastic service. - Everybody at the hotel is extremely helpful. They never complain or second guess what you need. They are there to assist you 100% of the time. Whether it’s learning local places to eat, or what’s worth checking out around there. Best 7 days kf my life.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - They are not using travelocity. We didn't get a room
- IamToony (6/5): hotel or hostel? - very friendly staff. good working AC. can't say i would call it a hotel because it feels more like a hostel with private room and shower. the shower had luke warm water temperature at best. took us awhile to figure out how to get it to turn warm too. the bed had a very thin layer of sheets that just couldn't hold us through with AC on at night. the maid must've noticed that we were freezing and was kind enough to leave us a fleece blanket on our 2nd day. didn't really get to use the kitchen. the door had a 2 inch gap on the top and the bottom. the bottom was covered with a plastic protective strip but the top wasn't. there were ants all along the walls by the window into the bathroom. we also found ants on our pillows which was pretty frightening. i ended up buying a hand towel because there were non and i didn't want to use our shower towel (2 per room) to wipe my hands every time. having a fridge in room was very nice. the location was definitely convenient. noise control was .... non existent yet there's a quiet sign throughout the property. the hotel restaurant and bar blasted music until about 3am every night and so during our 4 night stay, we got very little sleep. (i had ear plugs on but even then i could still hear the bass).very poor lighting in the room making it impossible to do any reading. there isn't much to do at night unless you enjoy bar hopping. this accommodation was not cheap either considering we paid only $20 more for much nicer places in other parts of CR we visited on this trip. if we were to return, we would not choose to stay here. despite very friendly staff, the accommodation was very minimal to say the least. i almost cried one night and wanted to leave for san jose a day earlier had we not booked a tour the next day.
- 280karlab (10/5): Wonderful - My daughter and I spent 1 night. Staff was wonderful and accommodations wad also wonderful, close to everything great location, comfortable beds, beach is across the street, frozen yogurt shop near by and many resturants to chose from, bank within walking distance.
- cjwlutton (6/5): Oasis of colour - Basic room but clean, non of our group could understand how to get hot water from the shower. I am too small to reach the switches on top of the unit. However it's warm so you do not really need hot water. Lots of breakfast places within a few minutes walk same with restaurants for the evening. The hotel area is locked at night so you feel secure, also quiet as stepped back from the road. Only some of the rooms have safe boxes so if that's important to ask when you book. I spent a happy couple of hours in a hammock reading my book, it was raining but hammocks are sheltered, the garden is a riot of colour.
- MojcaD3 (8/5): Clean accomodation on great location - Good budget accomodation, caribben style, very colourful , really liked the place.
The room was quite basic with a mosquito net and A/C and private bathroom with hot water. There was also a small fridge in the room and a safety deposit box and free WiFi access. Hammock infront of the room was great.
Good value for money, recommended to all backpackers.
- ernestoqueensny (8/5): Just basic but ok - The hotel is right across the caribbean sea and it is so soothing. Walking around the area feels like a peaceful environment. Lots of restaurants and stores to shop. The room is quite basic with a mosquito net with air conditioner, TV and bath with shower. The wifi works very well plus the breakfast is not in the hotel itself. Just walk a few meters to a restaurant whereby a breakfast voucher was given. Nothing to complain about.
- rokk2017 (8/5): Nice budget accomodation next to the beach - Just spent several night at Maritza's place. We stayed in one of their private rooms and got a double bed, fan, shared bathroom & toillet, shared kitchen & access to a nice little terrace with view of the Carribean sea, for just 20$ (10$ pp) which is very cheap compared to some other places in the area that charge more for a shared dorm bedroom. Room and facilities were clean, lady at the reception very kind and welcoming. Recommended to all backpackers.
- Silja6CC (8/5): Good value for money - This place turned out to be better than we expected
pros:
the location is great, you just need to cross the street and you can go swimming
great air conditioning
wifi worked fine
shower was good
cons:
you can hear noises from outside but luckily people were quiet at night
the beach across the street isn't awesome white sand beach - it's just a place to take a swim and take some pictures for example
- jsandoval562 (6/5): Fit the need - Needed a place for a one night stay that would allow us to leave our rental car there while we visited Panama for a few days. The room was clean, towels not worn, and the AC worked just fine. It has a secure parking lot that is locked at night.
Across the street from the beach.
- veronica420 (10/5): Best spot in town! - I came to Hotel Maritza by accident. But what a great accident it was. I needed an inexpensive room for a few days and they have not only hotel rooms, but a hostel as well. So this review is for the hostel. The room i stayed in was totally private and had an ocean view and free wifi! I ended up spending 4 nights here and it was exactly what i needed. It was clean private, and right across the street from a fantastic public beach. The week i stayed was the 2nd week of November and the bar downstairs ended up being closed when i was there so i didnt have to deal with that but i had ear plugs just in case. I was traveling alone and felt very safe here. They have it gated and locked after dark. The cafe next door was great and anything you could need or want is within walking distance. The staff is very friendly and all in all a great experience. I will for sure stay there again when i go back to Puerto Viejo!
- Reefrunner506 (10/5): Thank you Mami! - Mrs Anna is just a beautiful nice Caribbean soul, her and her son Christian run this unique hotel right in front of the water and in the middle of Puerto Viejo, nice affordable rates and very convenient hostel section too.
Mami as everyone calls her has a great taste for color and gardening, rates are super resonable and they even have a nice little bar with life music every now and then.
Over all loved your place,. thank you Mami!
- byronh910 (10/5): A nice clean well kept motor hotel with secure parking, a bar, and a hostel. - Ana is a very pleasant hostess. Her place is well maintained and directly across the street from a good swimming beach. The rates are very competitive and we found it to be a great bargain as well.
If you stay in the hostel rooms don't expect a quiet night as you're right above the club. It's perfect for making friends though.
- 761dmitryb (10/5): Work hard, play even harder - This hotel maintains the spirit of Puerto Viejo while staying up with solid standards of security and cleanliness. Rooms are simple and clean, parking safe, shared kitchen, AC, hot water and it's right across from the beach. Beach was not really swimmable thou, lots of big, rough waves.
We had an issue with a reservation and in the end they were able to accommodate us, the staff is very personable.
One issue is that it's right next to a club that blasts music until about 4am. So it works better if you are ready to party and stay up late.
- MissLibelula_83 (6/5): A safe and clean place in Puerto Viejo. - It is a very good option for travellers if you look for a clean place to sleep and have a shower. It is very close to all the main spots in town, including the bus stop (10 metres away). You can walk for 2 minutes and you are in the beach. The owner is very kind and informative. There is air conditioning, hot water and a small fridge. At night it was very quiet. Pity breakfast was not included!
- Diverdan28 (10/5): Great cabins near waterfront - The Hotel Maritza is really a motel and is located on Avenida 73, which is right on the waterfront in Puerto Viejo. Its located next door to the Maritza bar which was closed for renovations during my stay.
Its only about 100 metres to the Mepe bus terminal and a two minute walk to the centre of town. However, it was surprizingly quiet most nights. Though there are far better beaches in the area, there is one just across the road if you want a quick dip or to get some sun.
They have about fifteen units on a compound secured with a locked gate during the evening. Ample parking for those with cars.
The rooms are equipped with excellent A/C, cable TV, a small refrigerator, an in-room safe, and hot water. Towels and sheets are good quality and changed frequently. The owner lives on premise and will quickly address any issues or requests.
I wanted a reasonably quiet, secure , comfortable environment for my stay and couldn't have asked for a better spot. Rooms start at $36 for a single.
I have stayed at another location during several previous visits, with far fewer amenities for the price, but the Maritza is now my chosen spot.
