Guest Reviews
- Thorpe (6/5): Shame it closed - It was compact but clean with everything required Due to the place closing its doors for good, we were the last guests to stay there. This meant no breakfast, limited staffing and 1 or 2 other minor issues
- Pippa RICHARDSON (9/5): - The bed was very comfy. The room was fab. Everything we needed. Sad it is closing, as now we have found these rooms, it would be perfect for us and our dog.
- Gary (9/5): -
- Jeremy (1/5): I didn't stay here because it was just awful. - Nothing Dirty room, used towels, used sheets, dirty duvet, approach was awful it looked like a builders yard.
- Freddy (5/5): - Worst reception ever no welcome could not even bother to give us a key we had to go into bar to collect it did not feel welcome at all.
- Roger (9/5): - No breakfast
- Peter (4/5): Dissatisfied from first time - Not as good as the last time Dirty wet bedding NO Breakfast rice to. High for cost
- Emma (5/5): Not cleaned properly - Location Not clean
- Helen (6/5): Adequate for what we needed but was expensive for just a room - Comfortable bed Too hot, breakfast not available.
- neil (5/5): - friendly staff, good location and pet friendly at no extra cost. cleanliness through the place was not good, left over cigarettes in their hundreds, unkempt beer garden and furniture.
- Jed (9/5): - Location
- wendy (10/5): I loved my stay, room was lovely, comfy bed,and the lady who showed me to my room, was very friendly - didnt stay for breakfast there was nothing i didnt like
- Megan (10/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): - Comfortable without fuss; location was excellent. Steep stairs; wish the garden area were more attractive
- Pamela (10/5): Clean, comfortable and hassle free. - The location was perfect for us attending a party just 5 minutes walk away. The room was in a separate building at the back of the pub and was, therefore, very quiet. Two medium sized flights of stairs to reach our room which was one of three in the building. Not the largest room ever but well laid out and more than adequate for two people with plenty of hanging space for our clothes. The room was clean and equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, including biscuits. The coffee machine used pods which were supplied so you could have a decent cup of coffee. There was also a fridge and a hairdryer. The double bed was warm and comfortable. The shower room (no bath) was clean and tidy and supplied soft, white towels, a selection of toiletries and plenty of hot water. In the entrance to the building there was an iron and ironing board, always handy to have available. Not sure there was anything we didn’t like, we were only there for less than 24 hours and found nothing to complain about. We stayed on a Monday night, the King Alfred is closed on Mondays so we didn’t meet the landlord/landlady, all communication was done by mobile phone which was slightly odd but not a problem. Breakfast was not available but with Clark’s Village just down the road we had any number of places to choose from for breakfast so, again, this was not a problem.
- Simon (9/5): One night stay in December - Convenient location. Five minute walk from high street and Clarks Village.Friendly helpful staff and enjoyed a very nice meal in the pub.
- Steve (8/5): Very comfortable just what we wanted - Ideal Not enough milk but otherwise good

- Victoria (5/5): The room was comfortable and in good location . - Very close to Clark’s Village . Parking . Room was ok . The bed was very close to bathroom door . Bathroom needed some bleach .
- Lee (8/5): Excellent room and service. - Simple to book, comfortable room and well located with private parking. The path from the car park to the room could be paved rather than grass.
- Robert (7/5): - Clean, comfortable, good easy parking and just a short walk into town.
- Laura (7/5): Room had great amenities, smart TV, strong, hot shower, coffee machine & kettle. The room was warm and the bed was c - Cute little pub in a quiet location but within walking distance to Street. Plenty of parking.
- Nigel (9/5): -
- Caitlin (8/5): -
- Suzanne (8/5): Lovely little pub, great food. My very own Fisherman's Friends concert. - Lovely little village pub, so nice to see a community coming together Spider in my room, but sorted him out
Underwear left by the side of the bed, perhaps better checks when preparing a room, I only found them because I dropped my phone down the side of the bed
- Jenny (7/5): It was all we needed it to be - Room was ready for us when we arrived and enough towels for all of us which isn't always the case. Bed was comfy and shower hot and since we were only staying one night that was all we needed. Staff were very helpful. Some of the lights in the room didn't work and the fridge looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time with a half-eaten block of chocolate left inside.
- Lindsay (8/5): - Good location, good value for money, plenty of off street parking. Rooms were to warm and one room the window was unable to be opened.
- Joanne (9/5): Very satisfactory. Would stay again - Location. Close to amenities, attractions, shops, restaurants. A short walk into town
Comfort
Ease of accessibility
Warm
Excellent shower
Very friendly and helpful hosts
Easy free parking Slight mould on inside of shower
No breakfast available
- Paul (6/5): Value for money. Evening meal was very good. Location was great and very quiet. - Unfortunately the breakfast was not available. We booked on the basis that breakfast was available as we had to leave by 9.
- Jenny (6/5): A comfortable and clean room in a good location - Location good as only 5 minute walk into Street. Room was comfortable and clean with tea and coffee facilities. Staff initially didn’t appear to know we were booked in. Pub was closing early as staff were working elsewhere. Property seemed a little rundown.
- Adam (7/5): - Nice and clean, decent size. Wasn't told about check out and felt a bit unorganised when I arrived, almost like I shouldn't have been there.
- Scarlett (5/5): Not great wouldn’t stay again - Location The smallest towels ever could not fit small towels around head to dry hair. Very small. Uncomfy bed, hot needed fan on all night, couldn’t sleep till pub shut as people right outside room window. Food was not great either. Too expensive for what room was worth
- Martina (9/5): -
- Jennie (10/5): Brilliant value, dog friendly and great food - A great place to stay. Room was surprisingly spacious, very clean and had a very comfortable bed. The rooms are in a separate building to the pub so it’s nice and quiet. Very peaceful at night, you don’t get any road noise and you’re away from the high street in a nice quiet street. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was really good, we only ate dinner there but it was really good home cooked food, and very good value for money. Nice to have a coffee machine in the room too which we didn’t expect. Overall excellent value and would stay again. We stayed with our little dog and it’s a very dog friendly pub, and the beer garden is just outside of the rooms so it’s not far to take them out for a wee. Nothing
- Shelly jane (10/5): Amazing - It was very nice; I loved the stay. The staff was so friendly, and it was not busy, just how we like it. Listening to sea shanties on Tuesday was also nice.we would deffiently be back again. There was not anything
- Roger (10/5): -
- Alan (7/5): Did what it said on the can. - room only. ...
- Cunningham (7/5): Good -
- Travis (10/5): Exceptional - A really well equipped room,
comfortable and quiet.
- Marcia (3/5): Not great, accommodation in serious need of a deep clean and update. Customer service poor. - The fan in the room……. We were greeted by a very unhappy member of staff whose opening statement was”we are not offering breakfast as people say they want it, the chef comes in and the guest changes their mind”, but you can get food at Wetherspoon. Rooms need a good clean and updating. Carpet on stairs a trip hazard.Had a fridge in the room but had a half eaten carton of coleslaw left in it. Had food in the pub first evening but told they were short staffed so had to wait almost an hours “ because we are busy with other people. Group of youngsters left drinking under a gazebo until very late playing music and singing, member of staff told them she was locking up and to leave their glasses by the back door when they finished!!
- Louise (7/5): Property was as I expected, great stay - Really helpful staff, great location. The room was very stuffy but it was a heat wave
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Nice food, quiet location, great shower, coffee machine in room ... easy parking...
- Antony (8/5): Overall…excellent value and service. And a wonderful meal. - *Location
*Value for money
*Cleanliness
*Loxley…the owner & chef
*Food
*Kitchen and serving staff
*The shower *The drinkers sitting immediately outside our ground floor bedroom…perhaps move those picnic tables.
*The unfriendly, unhelpful female bar staff member who seemed only interested in talking to the locals. This was in stark contrast to all other members of staff, who were just great.
- Jenny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nikolas (8/5): overall a comfortable stay and helpful staff - pleasant staff and clean room we had some problem with the lock on our door
- Neil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Turner (6/5): Pleasant - The bedroom and ensuite was clean and comfortable, the staff were lovely, didn't have a breakfast so unable to comment. Having the car park close was nice. The room was behind the beer garden and was quite noisy until late.
- Brendan (7/5): Good - The location was ok, just a small walk to the main village. The room was part of some flats at the rear of the property which could do with a bit of a tidy up. Weeds and such. Comfy room a little tired round the edges but over all good value for money. The staff were great, very friendly Just a little bit scruffy round the back by the rooms. Could be really nice.
- Madeleine (8/5): Excellent value for money in Street - Great value for money - fairly basic but very clean and with a really comfy bed and great shower. That's all you need for an overnight stay. Nothing.
- Linda (8/5): Very good - friendly and helpful staff. Evening food very nice.
- Marian (8/5): Friendly staff and helpful. Was good to be able to bring our dogs - Really nice Bedroom very close to skittle alley which was very noisy until after 11p.m. I was in bed wanting to sleep
- Jezza94 (8/5): Very good -
- Zaza (9/5): Superb -
- Anna (7/5): This was a one night stay and the location was perfect. - The location is very good as it is close to the centre of Street.
- Lee (7/5): Ok.. - Showers was hot. Bed was comfortable.Food in pub was surprisingly good.Beer was cold. Was able to park motorcycle around back and out of sight.Breakfast was a full English or a choice of sandwich or cereal. Room wasn’t made up during the day and was minimal amount of toiletries/drinks tea/coffee stuff.
Had to ask for any replacement items.
Just felt that everything was done to a minimal.
- Andre (1/5): Quite simple avoid at all costs. - Didn’t have breakfast The whole place was dirty, room wasn’t cleaned, door to room didn’t fit properly
Room lead into beer garden no privacy.
Noisy.
- Sandra (1/5): We did not stay, we could not sleep there, the whole place felt and looked very dirty. - Nothing The room and the whole place was not clean.
- Peter (7/5): Good -
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional - Great food and friendly staff Everything
- Teresa (7/5): Good -
- Pamela (8/5): Very good -
- Raymond (7/5): Good -
- Barry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jo (5/5): Passable -
- Michelle (5/5): Ok for a cheap short stay, need to work on customer relationships - Nice looking pub externally, internally could do with a spruce up, accommodation was also in need of updating but acceptable for the price and short stay.
Food was nice, especially the tempura prawns.
Waitress who brought out our food, was very polite.
Ideal location for the main shops. The pub had a ‘locals drinking’ feel to it and not a family feel.
The main issue, from the moment we arrived, was the barmaid who said the right things but in a tone that was just not welcoming at all, it was as if she just didn’t like us but had to speak to us! I noticed that she was more cheerful towards some others in the bar. We would have eaten there more often if we’d felt more welcome.
- Michael (7/5): Good - Ideal location, walking distance to Clarks Village and able to leave car in car park. Tidy and clean with everything needed but room door banged overnight possibly due to backdraft.
- Neal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chigwell (7/5): Pleasant one night stay - breakfast was good but not included and no WIFI - Staff friendly, food good only negative - no WIFI No wifi
- Peter (9/5): Ideal stay - Staff very friendly. Landlord and landlady were great. Very social pub loved it the room was good. Everything you could except. One prob was the green light showing the door in emergency it was too bright but otherwise everything was spot on. I will def use this place again if I'm that way. Also only short walk to the shops restaurants and pubs Emergency light in room. Too bright. But that's it
- John (5/5): Friendly staff and a good cooked breakfast. Accommodation ok. - The staff were friendly and the vegetarian cooked breakfast was good. We liked the location, the bed was comfortable and the room was perfectly adequate and had a coffee machine (a nice touch though it would have been useful to have instructions on how to use it as I've never used one before and needed to Google how to use the machine). The shower was good. When sharing criticisms that we had (as noted below) with staff they were receptive and indicated that they would address these issues. There was a stain on the duvet cover that had the look of a few small spots of dried blood. I need to be fair here and say that I think this could quite easily be overlooked when making the bed but it does show that perhaps a little more attention to detail is needed. A notice in the room politely requested visitors not to adjust the thermostat as it would affect the temperature of the whole building. This did mean though that we felt uncomfortably hot at times and had to resort to opening the window. The small green light in the emergency lighting casing near the door was sufficient to illuminate the room too much during the night; not so bright that you could read by it but sufficiently bright to easily make out the shape of the furniture in the room and this meant that the room was not dark enough for my liking. The pale stair carpet outside our room was very dirty and badly worn and whilst our room was ok it wasn't a good advertisement for the accommodation as a whole.
- marysN5329YI (10/5): Cosy, Friendly Pub with fantastic homemade food. Great place to go for Sunday lunch. - Visited with 16 friends whilst staying in the area. The pub had been recommended by people who lived and worked in the local area. What a good recommendation this turned out to be to be. We were welcomed in by warm and friendly staff who couldn’t do enough to make our experience very pleasurable. The bar staff were fabulous. We had made a booking for lunch for the 16 of us and were seated in a lovely cosy room. The chef talked us through the menu and allowed us to tailor our choices to our individual tastes and appetites. We were blown away by the hospitality that all the staff showed us. The food was delicious and the presentation just fabulous. We would definitely go back if in the area and recommend it as a warm and friendly pub with tasty homemade food at a very reasonable price. Good choice of beers and wine and even had a cocktail list. One of our party had a Pina Colada.
- Page (8/5): Very good -
- Jacek (10/5): Exceptional - staff n/a
- White (7/5): Shopping weekend. - Staff were friendly and welcoming. Can oracle stay overall. The door was loose and kept banging each time the front door opened. This went on through the stay each time someone came in or went out.
This went on through the night, leading to a sleepless night.
- Katherine (9/5): Superb - Lovely local pub very close to the high street, perfect for shopping! The bathroom was quite small but it was perfect for one night!
- Catherine (3/5): Shocking service poorly run tired looking establishment - The location to Street was the only good aspect of this hotel/pub Upon arrival by the side door we were greeted by a pile of dumped wellington boots and overflowing ash trays.
Girl checking us in informed us breakfast was at 8.30
Staircase up to room was covered in a dirty threadbare carpet.
The room itself was spacious but very basic.
Facilities to make a drink but no milk.
Woken through night by door rattling while other guests coming and going.
Breakfast was literally served at 8.30 and as we turned up at 9.00 we didn’t get any.
Second night discovered no electric to plug sockets, rang several numbers to try to resolve eventually got hold of a lady who said she would get the manager to sort, after waiting 20 minutes no return call or sign of manager so we left.
- Bernabe (10/5): Our stay was superb even for a day. - Accessible , clean the staff very approachable. Nothing really. Everything is acceptable .
- Martin (7/5): Good value stay on our Travels to Area - Warm welcome. Dog friendly. Bar Menu. Good Wi Fi and Smart TV Nothing really
- Paul (7/5): Good -
- Susan (6/5): Pleasant - Location was good, Heating and light in the room ok. The room was a bit squashed. Room too small
- Janette (10/5): Exceptional - Location was ideal for visiting family and street retail park
- Roger (8/5): Perfect for our needs on this occasion. I look forward to a future visit. - Excellent evening meal and 'homely' bar atmosphere. Clearly a very popular local pub as well as a hotel. Breakfast was ample and tasty, but rather 'casually' presented. Good to have free, safe, off-road parking. Super bed! The breakfast tables (with menu) should really have been laid properly, ready for our arrival at 8am - this would have made a more 'professional' impression? The food itself was fine.
- Fay (8/5): Very good -
- Anthony (8/5): A cheap clean place to stay for a night - Good location for visiting street. God breakfast and good home made food. Room is pretty basic but value for money
- Gina (10/5): Fabulous - Super pub, friendly and accommodating staff. Good food, clean rooms, well run.
- Robson (8/5): Very good -
- Bruce (8/5): Very good -
- Lee (8/5): Very good -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Tony (3/5): Poor - Location.
Clean bedroom. The pub area and letting rooms stairs needs cleaning/TLC.
Disappointing, greasy breakfast, usual cook wasn't available.
Surly woman behind bar.
- Geoff (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (10/5): Perfectly located near Glastonbury. Quiet and convenient. - Perfectly located under 10 minutes from Glastonbury. A gem with just the right size room for a one night stay (or more!). Lovely staff ensuring all was good. A good full English breakfast included in the morning.
- Susan (6/5): A nice break away - Staff friendly Needed a face lift , toilet seat dodgy but staff were very accommodating
- Andrew (7/5): stop over to visit Clark's on the way home from holiday - Easy walking distance from the Town centre and the Shower was Hot and Steady. It is a very busy Popular small Pub for locals to drop into and on the Friday night we stayed it was not the place for a quiet meal together. Not their fault it's just very busy.
