Guest Reviews
- MesaGrandJunction (10/5): Convenient to attactions and great restaurants! - This small apartment was perfect for us. It is steps from the old Roman Bridge, Moorish Alcazaba, and Plaza de Espana. The apartment is above Rex Numitor, an amazing restaurant, and you get 20% off because of staying at Aparthotel Capitolina. We ate there twice and loved the food, wine, and service.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Bien situado.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This “hotel” had an 8pm check-in time which left us waiting in the street below with our luggage for hours. It was exhausting and inconvenient and ruined our one night stay to Merida. I wish I had been better informed so I could have chosen another hotel.
- Anonymous (10/5): - Great location. Some street noise (to be expected), but little to no interior noise.
- Sanford (10/5): Delightful stay in a pretty apartment - A wonderful place to stay. Clean and bright. Good WiFi and air conditioning. Note that there is no elevator and you will have to lug any heavy suitcases up to three floors up. We stayed in the ‘penthouse’ ‘Green’ room which comes with a wrap-around outside balcony. This apartment is just steps to the Monuments Historical area which means you can walk the entire area (we did). There is a good-sized supermarket around the corner. Fresh fruit sellers are nearby. Try taking the yellow free walking tours, we did.
- JAVIER (8/5): Muy céntrico - Apartamento amplio y bien situado. Si duermes bien no vas atener problemas.
- zazu2012 (10/5): High praise for this hotel and restaurant - Stayed one night but wish it had been longer. Lovely receptionist in bustling restaurant below. Apartment was BIG with splendid bathroom, views over the castle and great location for evening stroll over the Roman bridge.
We had the best meal, inventive cooking and at a really reasonable price in 4 weeks of travelling in Spain.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Muy buenos apartamentos.
- pdnhsw2017 (10/5): Very nice, best place to stay in Mérida. Same owner as rest. Rex Numitor - Very nice, very reasonable price. Could not be more central. Parking 5 minute walk away on street by the river. Best part? Same owner, bldg. as restaurant Rex Numitor, which is worth traveling to Mérida for.
- DebL550 (10/5): Family Holiday - We had two families traveling together over the Holidays with a total of 11 people. These apartments were absolutely perfect! Everyone was very happy with our accommodations-- and they were centrally located for walking to explore the city. They were very clean-- and the staff was wonderful. The rooms are above a restaurant with fabulous food. We would stay there again-- and in fact, we will use this as a location to compare to in the future. Thank you!
- JeffnLiz (10/5): Large room in great location! - Our room was actually three rooms! Clean and well maintained. The staff was great and the location was convenient being just off the main courtyard. Easy access to the ruins and plenty of restaurants.
- keng350 (10/5): Excellent hotel / apartment in Merida - This was a nice change of pace from the usual hotel. As the name implies, it is kind of a cross between a hotel and an apartment, with comfortable rooms and a small kitchen. You can get rooms adjoining for a family stay, or for two couples, if they're people you like to travel with. As a couple we didn't need the extra room, so they upgraded our room and closed off the other bedroom. It was nice and quiet, and near most of the main sights in Merida. One thing to be careful about - it's a little hard to find. It shares a lobby with a restaurant, Rex Nimitor, which has a better sign. The restaurant is great, too. Number 2 on TripAdvisor for Merida.
- RhondaS209 (8/5): Perfect Rental for Family - We rented a two bedroom apartment in the old city center, close to the Roman ruins. The staff was extremely nice and accommodating. I was worried about the noise from the street below, but it wasn't bad at all. The apartment was very clean and cheery.
- Purmamarca (8/5): A Different Accommodation - We loved dining at the Rex Numitor, and on returning to Merida decided to try the Capitolina upstairs. We had a suite with two bedrooms and one bath for one traveling couple and accompanying grandchild. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom, while quite small, was well-fitted out, even with an electrical outlet for a hair curler or the like. The living room and bedroom lighting was essentially all ceiling lights, and it would be nice to have a floor lamp of some kind by the sofa. WiFi was excellent.
We arrived in late afternoon and there was someone in the restaurant who checked us in, but the morning we left there was no one and we had no instructions on returning the key. And there was just one key, a bit of a nuisance if we wanted to go out separately. It was pleasant to have a small kitchen, however, and the staff had left bread, butter and jam, milk and cereal for our breakfast.
Our suite, #3, had just a tiny view of the Alcazar. If a larger view is important to you, consult carefully when you book your room. The location is very good, with the Alcazar and Roman Bridge immediately nearby and a short stroll to the Roman Theater, etc. And dinner is very close indeed!
- DiR46 (2/5): Worst hotel experience of my travels - We booked this hotel through Booking.com and based on the Trip Advisor reviews. We requested an early check in between 1000 -1100 and received a confirmation email to say this had been approved by the Aparthotel.
Firstly, it is the most difficult place to find. Signage is next to zero and we spent the greater part of an hour looking for and asking directions to this hotel (no one knew where it was, so that didn't help). What is signed is the restaurant next door which has a completely different name and we had actually walked past the Hotel twice without realising it.
When we finally arrived, the door was closed. We knocked and knocked - no answer. We telephoned - no answer. We phoned Booking.com in the UK (an expensive call) and they tried to contact them as well - no answer. Booking.com apologised and said they would try to find us alternate accommodation (as it turned out, we found our own as it was quicker). You can imagine what is would be like wandering around with cases and nowhere to go!
Later in the day around 5pm, we passed Aparthotel again and the door was open but there was no one at the desk. We ventured into the restaurant to ask if the hotel had closed down and the lady in the restaurant was the reception person for the hotel.
She spoke no English and we spoke no Spanish, so we used Google Translate to communicate.
She assumed we had turned up for our reservation. We explained what had happened and how disappointed we were. She said reception doesn't open until 12 noon. Fortunately we had kept the email which showed our early check in. However she continued to insist that reception didn't open until midday.
She led us to believe that she was sorry for the error and everything would be sorted and there would not be a charge, so you can imagine the shock next day when we received an email charging us for a 'no-show'.
After more communication with Booking.com all was sorted, fortunately.
We were only in Merida for one day and this mis-communication severely impacted on our time here.
I cannot comment on the rooms for obvious reasons, however I would not recommend this hotel because of the issues above. If you do stay here, be aware of the difficulty of finding the place, the reception hours and the language barrier.
- patrickbelgio (8/5): Great Apartment ..... with a view - We chose the Aparthotel Capitolina mainly because of its location and the positive reviews on this site, and were not disappointed.
The location is fabulous indeed , and our apartment had a great view on the Alcazaba and the Roman Bridge. We stayed only one night, so it was very convenient to just walk out of the door onto the main square and the main attractions. Moreover, it was spacious and clean, and there was a beautiful roof terrace too.
As we don't speak Spanish, we had some language difficulties, but service was friendly.
There's no car park, but we had no problem finding a spot on the avenue next to the river.
Breakfast is included, but you need to prepare it yourself in the Apartment.
All in all, a nice experience, and well worth its price.
- Robbert007 (6/5): Sympathetic with some remarks - In a almost traffic free street near the center and the Roman bridge, we find this building with on the ground floor a - what later turns more than excellent - restaurant and above some apartments with air conditioning and heating. Breakfast ingredients are metered in the room, partly supplemented. Spacious bathroom with a surprisingly shower, two sinks, plenty of towels which are changed. Living room with sitting area and kitchenette, bedroom. A wardrobe with too little hangers, safe and a small bed, 1.90 x 1.60 with blanket and sheets. Daily service for the bed and the bathroom. The dish washing up is up to you, but a dish brush and towel are missing. The rating on TripAdvisor is high for this three star accommodation. But consider: noisy: sounds of the corridor, the other rooms and lots of noise day and night from passing traffic in the nearby street. Maintenance: the coffee machine is not clean and the lid is loose, the pot of the toilet is not fixed and falters, the shaving mirror is loose and skewed. The hood of the lamp on the only bedside table hangs loose on and remote controller of the air conditioner in the bedroom is missing.
Thanks to the extremely friendly staff still value for money.
- sandiebig (10/5): A keeper - we are totally happy here. Great area. Lots to do. Great food nearby. Would definitely rebook. On you first pass stop car on side street to unload. Then park in carpark or park calle de Roma first then go back for your small things
- runner1_12 (10/5): Fantastic Apartment in great location - This aparthotel is located right in the centre of Merida, within view of the Roman walls and the bridge. It was quite busy in the town when we arrived, and found it difficult to park,no street parking available. we eventually found a public car park, but then had to drag our cases quite a way to the hotel.
When we arrived however,we were greeted warmly by the reception staff. Very chatty and helpful, even booked us in the attached restaurant(which was excellent by the way) as we were only here for one night,we didn't want to walk around looking for somewhere to eat. The apartment was huge, with two big bedrooms ,two double beds, loads of wardrobe space. Adequate little kitchen and fridge, breakfast is left in the kitchen for you. Would definitely recommend this hotel in Merida.
- TheGumnuts (8/5): Hotel-priced apartment in centre of town - The Capitolina is located pretty much right in the centre of the interesting part of Merida; steps away from the Roman bridge, and the Moorish fort, and a reasonable walk from the Roman ruins. There's an assortment of restaurants very close by, including the property's own restaurant right downstairs.
The street that the apartment is on is actually blocked to vehicular traffic during much of the day. In fact it's filled with tables and chairs of the restaurants in the street. So arriving by car means double-parking somewhere nearby and hauling your luggage to the apartment - anything from 50 metres to a couple of hundred metres, depending on where you've found a parking spot. Best to travel light. In the morning however, the street is open to traffic and residents of the apartment are allowed to drive to right outside the front door.
Car parking is available in the underground municipal carpark about 10 minutes walk away, for the cost of 15 euros/day. It's actually charged by the minute, so if you arrive in the afternoon and leave in the morning it will cost you less than 15 euros.
The apartment itself consists of two double bedrooms and a single bathroom off the living / kitchen / dining room. It's large enough for four people and in general is well-equipped for those wanting to self-cater. Given the availability and cost of the restaurants in the area, I'm not sure you'd actually spend much time catering for yourself though.
The breakfast included in the room rate consists of fairly basic materials left in the apartment for you to make your own breakfast with (loaf of bread, milk, juice, coffee, jam, butter). A bit minimalist, but adequate if not particularly exciting.
The rooms are decorated in a fairly loud colour scheme which won't be to everyone's taste, but that's hardly a reason to choose (or not) the property. The beds were comfortable, the couch somewhat less so. The small dining table is (just) big enough for four people.
The reception is actually inside the restaurant downstairs from the apartments. The staff is friendly and to some extent multi-lingual. We were asked to pay the full price on arrival and to leave the key in the letter box on departure the next morning (there is no staff in the morning); this is a little unusual, but wasn't a problem. The only potential issue could be if you forgot something in the apartment after locking the door and dropping your key in the box! You'd be waiting until the staff arrived later in the day I suppose.
Late at night the streets around the apartment are (still) a bit noisy, so that may be an issue if you're a light sleeper. We were there during a particularly hot day (38 degrees) and the air-conditioners in the apartment were struggling a little, but still coping. At least it was air-conditioned!
If we were to visit Merida again, we'd have no hesitation in staying at the Capitolina again.
- Seat28B (8/5): Great Location and Really Helpful Staff - Arriving in Merida on a sweltering day, we were not looking forward to having to drag our bags from one of the public car parks. However, on checking in at the restaurant (as the hotel desk was closed), we were given a pass that allowed us to park our car within 50 metres of the hotel as it was a Saturday afternoon. This was just one of the many examples of great customer service that the staff at the Aparthotel Capitolina hotel exhibited during our stay. We stayed in a 3 room suite which was very comfortable and had great air conditioning. The location is really good and we had none of the experiences with noise that some other people mentioned in their reviews. Merida is a lovely town and after dinner in the restaurant downstairs, we sat out with hundreds of other people on the main square with a glass of wine. If you are travelling through Merida, the Aparthotel Capitolina is a great choice.
- 837louisek (10/5): Nice Place but Difficult to Find - We were driving round & round through narrow streets before we finally spotted it. The hotel reception lady was very nice & helped us with parking close to the hotel instead of in remote parking. The one room apartment is lovely with kitchenette. The bathroom has 2 sinks & a very modern shower. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was just superb! İt's a good location where we could easily walk to the historical sites. Too bad we only stayed for one day. There are only 2 things İ recommend for improvement: more prominent road signs directing to hotel, & more individual pillows.
- alitheite (8/5): Great family accommodation - Enjoyable stay, very comfortable. Views of the bridge, close to town square, and walking distance to the ruins. Great family accommodation. We had a three bedroom apartment that comfortably accommodated the five of us. It was difficult to find parking nearby. The kids loved the long pillows.
- Indi-Indianna (10/5): Perfect spot to stop!! - Being a fussy hotel user I really look for places that stand out to me for one reason or another. The most important is that I need to feel comfortable in it. After all traveling can be stressful and you need a haven to go back to at the end of the day.
The Aparthotel Capitolina was a little place with a lovely boutique feel with people running the place that made you feel at home instantly. So much so that we extended our stay here. We had a one bedroom apartment that was very clean, cosy and comfortable. The rooms are all of a good size with room to move. There is a little kitchenette for those who want to eat in the apartment. I really loved the double balconette doors that opened up to the cobblestoned street below.
My one little thing is the pillows. I needed more of them as they are quite thin, but that's a personal thing and I'm sure if I asked for them they would have been only too happy to get me more!
There is no parking but the public car park is just around the corner.
The restaurant is fantastic and provides a great menu where everything we had was of very good quality. It was one of our best meals so far! The team who were working there that night where friendly, helpful and genuinely nice people to us non Spanish speaking Aussies!
- catherineY (8/5): A good base with a fantastic restaurant below - We were very happy with our apartment and it was perfectly located overlooking the roman bridge and the alcazar and just next to the Plaza de Espana. It was very clean and the beds were really comfortable plus it was great to have kitchen facilities and be able to make drinks or snacks as a change from having to eat out for every meal. We loved the restaurant below and would recommend it highly for deilcious, quality food at incredibly reasonable prices for the set meals.
I did find there was some road noise but this did not disturb our sleep. It is only because the cobbles of the old town make the traffic noise a bit worse and the streets are narrow. It was certainly a brilliant location in all other respects and we could watch the sunset over the bridge from our window then stroll downstairs for dinner!
- Jimswayze (10/5): Amazing place to stay! - So clean comfortable and convenient.we traveled all through Spain and this was our favorite spot. There were 4 of us traveling. It is also above the # 1 rated restaurant on Merida Rex Numitor that can't be missed either.we will come back here for sure! The host and hostess are so accommodating.
