Guest Reviews
- Gino (10/5): All was good - Pretty much everything
- Anna (10/5): - Sehr schönes Appartement, tolles Bad
- 佳音 (9/5): -
- jennifer (8/5): A lovely place to stay with all the amenities we needed for our four day trip to Kyoto. - The apartment was stylish and had everything we needed. I loved the bath and the bathroom was great looking into a small garden which was private. It was in a good location close to the main temple in Gion but also walkable into the main shopping precinct and food market. It was set back from a main road and we could hear the traffic at night.
- Shermaine (8/5): -
- michaela (10/5): Vackert, rent, bekvämt. - Underbart litet traditionellt hus.
- Chia Yee (8/5): Happy and satisfied. Good stay in Kyoto . - The location is very good and the Machiya House is very clean , facilities is wonderful , futon bed is nice to sleep too. The check in staff was very nice and friendly . Request to separate the rubbish but didn’t provide different type of rubbish bin with label.

- Kennettooo (7/5): Really quaint space and vibe - Good location, about 7 minute walk from the bus stop and about 10 from the nearest station. We came in prepared that this was a Machiya and not a hotel so we’re aware about the amenities and room services being a bit different.
Being able to send our luggage from the reception to our home was great! The support for luggage forwarding was also fantastic. Reception was very responsive throughout.
The vibe and experience in the room was lovely and the interiors were good. Kitchen amenities were great!
Lots of cute independent shops around the street and we were only 15 minutes by foot from Kiyomizu-dera. Gion was 4 stops away by bus. We saw the layout before booking so were aware, but our room is on the 2nd floor and had a narrow set of stairs to go up. I can imagine that some guests might struggle if they are not prepared. This also means that bringing luggage up will be difficult (which is why the luggage delivery was worth it).
We had a raised bed platform and raised dining area, which was interesting. This just meant we had to keep going up and down between the bed, kitchen/bathroom, and dining. Again, just something to be aware of. Room felt a tiny bit smaller than expected.
The entrance to our room was hidden, which made looking for it a bit difficult on our first night checking in but we got by fine. It is a bit far from convenience stores, and we didn’t realise we were quite close to a large road.
The TV remote worked half the time. Mini heaters provided in winter were great but quite weak.

- Lucia (8/5): - Local was great, walking distance to some major spots. Loved the soaking tub was well. Staff was also super accommodating with late checkout. It was a little difficult to find - the directions said "alleyway" but that makes me think of a street, entrance as more of a hallway in between two buildings. I also wish there was an ensuite bathroom so I didn't have to go down the stairs in the middle of the night.
- Rachel (10/5): - We loved everything about our stay here. The hosts were warm and welcoming. The home itself was cozy and beautifully maintained. We had dinner and breakfast during our stay, both were exceptional. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! A truly special place, in an historical area.
- Dylan (10/5): -
- katarzyna (9/5): Beautiful machina closed to Gion - Design Close to main road
- Ertl (10/5): -
- Anne-Laure (8/5): Belle maison spacieuse, bien équipée et bien située - Belle maison spacieuse, très bien placée et bien équipée. Un peu bruyant.
- Karol (10/5): Perfect stay in Kyoto in a Japanese way :) - We decided to stay at this place cause it was a traditional Japanese home. And that was spot on. It was a cosy little place with two bedrooms - one in Japanese style, the other in Western style. Both were super cool and comfortable. The localisation also met our expectations. The staff at the reception were super friendly and helpful. The house was quiet and comfortable. It had a big bathroom as well. Overall, I can only recommend the place; it is a perfect alternative to a regular hotel for sure. Nothing I can think of.

- Katie (9/5): Superb - Amazing accommodations with beautiful design Was very loud at night, cars racing in the middle of the night
- Jessinae (9/5): Superb - Location and space
- Grace (10/5): Exceptional -
- Le (8/5): Very good - Equipment and geographical localization were fine The appartment is next to a main road with a lot of traffic, the phonic isolation is not sufficient to prevent noise issue
- Dmclaughlin (10/5): Exceptional - Location was great for hitting local attractions, food. Check-in process was smooth
- Jordan (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, clean and comfortable. Nice to stay in a local style accommodation
- Raf (10/5): Great location and beautiful properly! - All the facilities are automated (heated floors, hot water etc) and the interiors were so beautiful Enjoyed everything
- Darian (9/5): A really great place to spend a week in Kyoto - We stayed at Hinaya Gojo Ichi for a week in Kyoto during our Honeymoon for our first time in Japan. This was the accommodation we stayed at the longest, and the one that felt the most like our home away from home during our trip.
To check in, there's a separate office which is near Kyoto station. It can be hard to find and is easy to miss, as it's on a "corner" but there's an adjacent building right next to it, separated by the smallest of alleys. There, you'll receive your instructions for accessing the Machiya, how to use certain appliances (like the in-room washer/dryer and the bath heater), and how to check out.
The access to the Machiya is very private, as you'll pass through a hall besides a shop which will take you to the clearing/yard where you can access your door.
Inside, it's very spacious and comfortable. On one side, there's the Japanese style tatami mat flooring. If you asked for Japanese style sleeping accommodations, here is where you'll set up your futons. Otherwise, it's a little living area with a low table and floor seating, and a TV.
On the other side are 'Western-style' beds (these also seemed to be futons, but on an elevated platform), which are comfortable enough, if not a little on the hard side.
The bathroom sink area is a little narrow/small, but there's a separate area for the toilet and a separate room for the shower and bath (which was great).
The location is good, it's near the top of a sloped hill; farther up the hill is a temple and bus stations to take you around the city, and down the hill are train stations, so it's easy to get to where you need. There are also convenience stores like Family Mart, 7-Eleven and Lawson's all nearby (a 5 minute walk), as well as ramen and udon shops, and some other small restaurants up and down the road.
- Jodie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Verity (9/5): Fabulous, good location and good value for money - Clean and tidy and Great bath! Quite noisy as near main road, but only bothered me as I am a light sleeper
- Yimin (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice combination of both traditional and modern machiya
- Serene (10/5): - Love the location and property. Would return.
- Jennifer (9/5): Great location, great property, I would stay there again. - Location was great, lots of space and the in-unit laundry machine was a huge bonus. The bathroom is very nice too, with the soaking tub being a very nice bonus feature. My only complaint about this property is the lighting. The unit doesn't get a lot of natural light which is okay. But the lights installed in the unit is not sufficient to light it up. I understand wanting to keep a certain ambiance, but being able to light up the common areas fully (with a dimming function) would be more ideal. The bathroom needs brighter lights too, especially over the sink for putting on makeup.
- Jesam (9/5): Superb - Modern facilities with the traditional experience of Japanese culture. Loved the washing machine and location!
- Janie (9/5): Plenty of room for 2 people. Great bathroom with a soaking tub - Great location near hotel with a great coffee bar The property was dark and needed more lighting
- Denville (10/5): Good experience but may not stay again as it is quite a distance from the tourist spot - Unique experience in a machiya No washer
- Katherine (8/5): Very good - Centrally located.
Very responsive team Saw cockroaches upon arrival
Lack of usb outlets
Lack of curtains
Loud Road
- Andrea (7/5): Good - staff, easy check in, lovely decoration, private and quiet, really good location toilet room a bit outdated
- Giulia (8/5): Very nice! - staff is very friendly and always available to help check in desk is 30 mins away from the house
- Hon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Monika (8/5): Very good - Very well situated. Close to some Kyoto landmarks and old Ghion area. Well connected with public transport.
Beautiful house with comfortable bedroom, little kitchen and a living room area. Japanese style. I was sleeping on tatami in the living room with the windows on the busy street. It was noisy with the car traffic at rush hours. For vulnerable ears it could be disturbing. My kids slept in the main bedroom and were fine.
- Sharon (10/5): Lovely vacation home in Kyoto - Lovely vacation house near the Gion neighborhood in Kyoto with easy access to nearby sites. Lovely and helpful staff. It was all good.
- Luz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phoebe (10/5): Wonderful customer service and great for family 2A, 2C - Absolutely wonderful stay! The machiya exceeded our expectations in every way. Impeccable service, fantastic amenities, and a truly enjoyable experience for the whole family. Highly recommend!
- Yoshie (10/5): amazing - So clean, Japanese style a bit far from check in place
- Cara (8/5): Very good -
- James (10/5): Beautiful, comfortable, very convenient accommodation in Higashiyama, close to temples and shops - A lovely "machiya", or traditional townhouse, in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. The accommodation was beautiful and, being down a little laneway, was pleasantly secluded and very quiet. Exceptionally convenient, it was close to restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, a supermarket and the Kiyomizu-Gojo train station. Kiyomizu-dera, the Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets, Yasaka pagoda and other popular sites were an easy 10-15 minute walk away. The machiya was extremely comfortable and our teenage children loved the upstairs "loft" sleeping area and the amazing bathroom. The underfloor heating was greatly appreciated in winter and the kitchenette and very effective washing machine/dryer combo were great and very convenient. The staff at Machiya Inns Kyoto were extremely helpful and pleasant and happily looked after our bags at their office near Kyoto station on our last day in the city. Highly recommended for its location, style, comfort and convenience.
- Katherine (9/5): A lovely authentic experience - A really beautiful little house in a great location. Very authentic feel and the amenities provided (such as the coffee and bath) exceeded expectations as well as the futons. A great place to spend new year and the host was also responsive in English. We arrived very late at night which made it hard for us to find the doorway (as the red cloths on the pictures were gone) and the instructions for the taxi driver in the email came up with a 404, so he became a bit frustrated trying to help us. Otherwise once we got in everything is perfect! Please consider putting something bright near the doorway so it’s easy to find at night 😊 (Entry is on the main street road, not the little alley it directs you to on maps.)
- Sng (9/5): Highly recommended - The location, the interior design and bathroom with a big bath. Place was a little smaller than expected.
- Aanchal (10/5): Loved the experience of staying at the Hinaya Go Machiya. Well done up, comfortable, good location -
- Anonymous (9/5): Good place to stay for families! - It’s has everything, esp when travelling with family. Enough hangers for clothes after washing, and love the hanging rack! The amenities were well thought of and very clean. It is a bit of a distance from the main station and needed to do transfers from train to bus. Even though there’s a nearby train station, it’s not a Jr station, so the JR pass will be quite useless, and it doesn’t connect directly to the Kyoto station.
- Opethowa (8/5): Nice - The place is located around 20-25 min from main attractions in Gion. Near by is a good noodle place and small ceramic store which offer better prices than in more crowded places. The space in the flat is nice, floor heating was cool and of course the bathtub. Beds were comfy. On booking.com you have photos of two separate flats. It was a little disappointing that I notice that way after reservation. They offer me a choice of the bed sets but it appeared that at the end I didn’t have a choice. The carpet and table looks like used a lot. Air conditioning was really dirty and one of them at some point was a little noisy. Don’t make me wrong, our stay was ok, but with that price I expected that the owner will put more attention to details.
- Tharnkamol (10/5): Feel like ryokan in Kyoto - Great facilities in room, such as bedding, bathtub, kitchen. Use stair to bring my big luggages down to house entrance.
- Rachel (9/5): Beautiful Machiya in the heart of Kyoto for a truly authentic experience - The Machiya was absolutely beautiful and gave us what felt like a genuine cultural experience. The location was perfect, so easy to access everything we wanted to see. It was very clean and had such a calming vibe. The only thing I will say is that the pictures on the listing were a little bit misleading because some of them seem to be from another Machiya owned by the host. We thought we were going to have all of the rooms shown in the photos but only some of them are for this house. Also I had requested a futon setup and it was only set up for Western sleeping, but not a huge issue there.
- Sundes (10/5): One of the best decisions for our japan trip - Everything. It was comfortable and beautiful. It was right in the middle of the city but yet very quiet. There is a manual for the devices but it would be nice to have actual English translations on the machines (washing machines, bathtub, etc).
- Katrin (10/5): Best Hotel❤️ - Beautiful suite!! Had the best experience, wish we could’ve enjoyed it longer!
It looks even better than the pictures❤️ loved it more
Make sure to read the check in instructions. Concierge is at a different location than the suite.
- Phang (10/5): Perfect for honeymoon. Had a very good rest and super homey. - Very clean, well decorated. Good location and had a very good rest in the Machiya! Would love to come again! Nothing.
- Nuria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fletcher (10/5): This was one of my favorite places I've stayed in Japan. - Fantastic location. Fantastic air conditioning, which was a literal life-saver in the 38°C (100°F) heat during our stay. We were extremely comfortable and extremely happy in our place. I'm hoping that I may be back to Kyoto in 2-3 years, and I would be very interested in staying here again if it's available at that time. We had a problem with insects during our stay—and I was probably a bit too tolerant of it, since I'd lived in Japan previously and knew how bad insects can get during the summer. Eventually, it reached a point where I decided to contact the property owners about it. They responded quickly, and were able to address the issue immediately and more effectively than I expected. We had no further problems with insects after I made contact. I would have made contact much sooner if I'd realized the property owners could respond so well to this.
- Sirikanya (10/5): Exceptional - Room design.
- Pei (7/5): Good - Location Mosquitos …not well sealed so many mosquito bites while sleeping
- Sui (9/5): Superb -
- Princessm (10/5): Cosy Machiya - Nice Machiya with everything you need in the house. There is a small kitchen with fridge, induction plate, oven and cutlery. Love the spacious bathroom with good shower and a big tub. There are 2 western bed upstairs and 2 futon bed downstairs. Plus point to have a washer/dryer where we did our laundry. The TV remote didn't work too well. Not sure if it ran out of battery to turn on the TV. The container for green tea was empty and we did not have green tea for our 2 nights stay. The walkway to the Machiya is dark at night. Will be good if there was a little bit of light.
- Tusha (7/5): Good -
- Heather (10/5): 4 night stay in April - Loved it. Great to have the ability to cook for ourselves and a top notch supermarket is just 10 mins walk away. Great location for Gion district. There is a super Onsen style bath in the apartment which was a great source of relaxation after a site seeing day in Kyoto. We stayed as a grown up family of 3 and the apartment was perfect for us. Highly recommend Nothing significant. Would have been nice to have had the tea and coffee topped up when the cleaner came on day 2.
- Gary (10/5): Exceptional -
