Guest Reviews
- Steven (8/5): - Samet Ville was a wonderful surprise for us as first-time visitors. It is a rustic setting with a private beach and a wonderfully warm bay inlet. The sand is soft and clean, and the villas range from rustic to modern. The staff was terrific, and the food options were plentiful. This setting is far down the island at Ao Wai, requiring a taxi or motorbikes to move about the island.
Be advised—a similarly named property, Samed Villa, is located on Ao TubTim, a more active part of the island with ample food options, bars, and an equally wonderful waterfront.
- Søren (8/5): - If you would like to have a holiday in a quiet place with beautiful beach and fantastic blue water ,this is the place. The only thing there is wrong with this place is that it is a little bit far away from everything. It takes about 15 minutes on the back off open car to go to the” city.”. And you have to discuss with the taxi drivers about the price. that’s a little bit annoying. If you’re up for it,rent a scooter.
- J7981HNjang (4/5): Rude service - Didn’t stay there, we just had a few drinks at their bar. When I wanted to go to the toilet (I had had a drink there after all) I was asked to pay for the it, as the lady said only eating customers can use it for free.
Flabbergasted, I asked the lady to give me back the tip I had left her and paid for the toilet with that.
With such rude service, obviously I don’t recommend this place.

- scratchmasterf (2/5): Still so shocking - 2nd time now. The beach is ok. The rooms beyond basic. The breakfast is not fit for a dog. Cold disgusting 'hot dogs' and freezing disgusting 'fried eggs' are the highlight. The staff are still slow and rude. You cant just order a kra pao. Its one of those rip off places where they charge 1 person 300 baht for a plate of bland minced pork and then ask if you want a 20 or 200 baht rice. Its a joke.
- Randy4774 (10/5): SOOOOO RELAXING - Lovely relaxing place to stay. I've been going to this island almost every year since 2007. Stayed at many different places, and this is the first time I felt strongly enough to write a review. Enjoyed myself staying here so much that I rescheduled my flight twice so I could stay longer. This is where I'll stay again when I return to the island.
- 672shapurs (8/5): Getaway in an isolated beach - The beach is great with white sand and blue water. It's isolated and private. However, the only restaurant offers not much variety with quality. Only fish was fresh. During the Songran festival, it was very busy and had to wait long time for food. Going to the village takes about 20 minutes with Toktok. They have some new building but we stayed in a rustic cottage near the beach. It was small and service is not like a normal hotle.
- LesleyN396 (8/5): Beautiful beach location! - Given choice of two rooms, we chose the one out on the rocks overlooking the sea. Despite the final few metres being very uneven we were thrilled with this spot.
Room was lovely and clean with windows to front and side. Large comfortable bed. Large balcony with chairs, table and clothes airer.
Very few guests used the dining room - one night we were the only people eating there.
Daytime we ate at the beach tables, which was lovely. Delicious food nicely presented.
The pool was clean, a nice pool - but the area around not great since there was a big drop from the edges which would be dangerous for children. It really needs a barrier for safety for little children.
The beach would be better for the children. Very safe and the whole bay exclusive to this hotel.
Hotel is tucked away. We arrived by taxi luckily so the driver knew the location.
- Thomas (10/5): - ☺️☺️☺️
- jpacaba (8/5): Lovely beach for a good long weekend - Great, quiet beach with calm water! They also have a pool that’s kid-friendly.
Nothing fancy about the resort itself but its setup puts you right in front of the beautiful beach. Rooms are generally clean and while they can’t clean the room to protect their staff from COVID exposure, they provide towels and toiletries everyday.
Breakfast’s typical but they have a full array of Thai and Western food that you can order. They also have a convenience store given its location from the busier beaches.
- 129kevc (2/5): Shocking - Ive lived in Thailand for 17 years and been to many many beach resorts. This is the 1st time ive felt the need to moan. Its just shocking prices, service, food...that pic was part of a 450 baht 'meal' ... ham and cheese sandwich (ham and salad cream) + a krapao. The workers here are unbelievable. Is there a manager? Does anyone run this place? Stunning beach stunningly awful everything else.
- holidayfun52 (2/5): I want to give you a good review but find it difficult because the resort owners are evil - Its all about the beach and sea though. Without the beach this resort monopolises there is little to reccomend. The staff are very friendly but treated badly by resort owners. The staff are working at least 16 hours a day and paid after working 3 months, with wage retained by resort owners. you can see how unhappy the staff are, they are not smiling, and they have been told to shear the tourists for every last satang.
One morning I asked to take milk to my room from breakfast so I could make tea in my room. The next day it was 60 baht for milk, 80 baht for a cup of hot water. They even took the milk away from the breakfast buffet.
So it is not just the beach visitors they squeeze for every last baht but also the guests. I was paying for a 4800 - 5200 baht a night superior garden view cottage. 2 small bottles of water.
Charged for use of on beach shower and toilet. Charged for extra water.
To show just how evil the resort owners are I provide you a photo of the vinegar station and they charge 100 baht to buy the vinegar in the shop
- Lucas (4/5): - fantastic beach ! That’s it ...
dirty, out of maintenance, rat in the out door living area . Sin bed if you want you pay extra .... food quality ... 7/11 style;)
One/two star hotel maximum . No cheep at all and no way no honey moon suite standard at all !!! Be aware .
Camping is the felling you have when you stay in this fantastic but less-manage resort .
Funny think ... at the reception ... sorry we have rat in shower .... smoke and I know ... this is the bill Thk ;)
Ops forget ... extra bed for my child ... a rat bites matters line on the floor with out the full set of linen . 20 US day . With smile ;)
So sad and non-hygienic !
- JohannaSoderberg (2/5): Worst restaurant - This was, by far, the worst restaurant i’ve ever visited. After 30min the first dish came, a dry and cold, hot sandwich. After 45 min the sodas came. And the rest of the food hadn’t come after 1h and 15 min 😫😫
The staff is so bad at english and feels very rude. Not serviceminded at all! Only 1 person from the staff can a little bit english. When u try to talk to the others, they just walk away....!
The beach is the absolut best on the island. It calm and peaceful and quiet. I will absolute come here again. But only for the beach!!!
- Zathsten (2/5): Bad resturante - Unfriendly staff that was only looking when you tried to get their attention. They had problems with the orders and missed the drinks. If you dont speak thai you dont get any service. We waited one hour för the food. Se paid 120 tbt for a cold ham and cheese sandwich with some few strips.
- 457lizetteb (10/5): Fantastic in the category - Friendly staff and good food in the restaurant.
Beach and the environment is amazing.
The only disadvantages was the breakfast, it was mediocre.
The staff are not good in English which can be understood as being unpleasant, but give them a chance, they are friendly and mean well.
- WayneHarding7 (2/5): Not worth it - What did i get for 1500 per night. Old tatty room, sea view was actually 60% hut in front and 40% sea. Room away from beach and pool. Rude staff refused to change our room unless we paid for upgrade..even though most rooms were empty. Restaurant very expensive by normal standards...100baht for a toddlers omelette!! Resort miles from anything so have no choice but to pay overinflated prices. Def won't be staying here again.
- 283francor (6/5): great beach - poor breakfast - I have been a number of times in Koh Samed, and I think this beach (Ao Wai) is the best on the island; beautiful and difficult to reach (and consequently not crowded at all). Safe for this Resort, there isn't anything else here; this can be good (if you are looking for peaceful and quiet environment) or bad (if you are looking for fun). The bungalows are very different in price, location and quality: we chose a bungalow right in front of the beach ad it was great. The restaurant is good either concerning food as well as location; Breakfast is served in another building far from the beach and is ..... "soviet style": poor food in a grey environment. All in all, this place is perfect if you are looking for a peaceful place far from the noise of the most popular beaches on the island.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - En-route transportation was horrible! We had to land from the speedboat on the beach and hauled the luggage to the front office. There is no restaurant around the hotel and you ended up eating at the terrible restaurant inside. The breakfasts served at the hotel is 1 star quality. Overall a very poor conditioned facility not worth the money!
- Joel88888 (8/5): Very relaxing - Just spent 7 nights here and it was lovely, traditional Thailand as I remember it from 15 years ago. The accommodation was very nice and staff friendly. Most definite recommendation and would certainly go back there.
- jamespattaya (6/5): Best beach in koh Samet. - I felt nervous and wanted to cancel our booking after I saw the bad reviews. But instead we pushed on, we don't have much time and options to change. We were not disappointed, Samet Ville Resort has one of the best beaches in the island! Although the room was not as luxurious as the other resorts we were in before it's still comfortable and value for money. For around 60.USD,you get a clean and comfortable air-conditioned room, free breakfast, nice swimming pool and one of the best and cleanest beach on the island! I'll grade it 6/10 overall. For a quick getaway I'll surely comeback.
- Cumbrian25 (6/5): Disappointed - Koh Samet Thailand
Having toured many of Thailand's off-shore islands but not Koh Samet, I thought it a good idea to do so, especially as it is accessible from Bangkok by road and ferry in about four hours door to door from a city hotel.
I this case my hotel was the Rembrandt on Sukhumvit Road, one I had stayed at before. A little about this hotel before my journey south. Under new management, it was good to witness the still highly motivated and loyal staff, the obvious satisfaction of guests and just how the few changes had done nothing to diminish its character and benefits of location. It still gets a 9 out of 10 from me.
Picked-up on time, luggage loaded, the driver set off and in under 3 hours I was standing on the pier at Rayong ready to board my chosen method of crossing the few miles to the island. On this subject, there are many choices...slow, easy going wooden boats...a high speed fibreglass catamaran... speedboats of differing sizes, privately hired craft and even your hotel/resorts own speedboats. Costs do vary widely from around 120 Baht to 1500 Baht and more.
After some internet searching, I had selected the Samed Villa Resort as my base for seven nights.
Best now to describe its features, its good and its not so good.
Located midway on the east coast of the island, it is bounded closely by other hotels and varying styles of accommodation.
With some 200 guests housed in individual bungalows (choices from sea or garden view or larger family units) space is at a premium indeed. The very small beach area was certainly crowded on each of the days I was there (mid February). Sun loungers are of the plastic variety and not very comfortable.
The adjacent hotel, with perhaps even more guests and row upon row of plastic loungers, does make the small sandy swimming area one where a person is likely to bump into another after a few strokes.
I had chosen a sea view bungalow, each of which have a balcony with two padded, easy chairs. It had everything one could expect...mini bar...safe...extremely comfortable bed...wide screen TV...high quality toiletries...marble floors...piping hot water from a high volume shower head and efficient air conditioning.
What it did NOT have was a reliable WiFi system, although the resort's advertising did feature this facility for free, it constantly failed. This problem was to be experienced throughout the entire hotel area – inside or out. For those like myself, who's stay was only partly leisure and who needed to be in constant contact worldwide, this was indeed a serious issue. At one point, I contemplated having to check-out and find other accommodation. However, the management, when made aware, did provide another 'senior staff only password', which did help although not cure. Other guests I spoke with, some of which were there on business matters, were equally frustrated.
Now the word 'Resort' does normally conjure up in one's mind, a place with many normally expected facilities. Samed Villa Resort, however lacks most of them. No swimming pool, no choice of restaurants, no sporting facilities other than kayak hire.
The one restaurant does manage to cater in a timely fashion, for guests both at breakfast and dinner, although the choice of where to sit and enjoy its offerings is a lottery. The breakfast buffet was perfectly acceptable, catering for tastes both eastern and western and with two chefs manning the egg station, waiting a minute or two for your choice to be cooked, was never a problem.
The dinner menu was extensive, guests seated outside on terraces and on the beach. The table staff worked very hard to maintain an acceptable level of service and could not be faulted either as to their skill levels or pleasant interaction with diners. All dishes I sampled throughout the week were as good as hoped for...no grumbles there!
One real downside however was the nightly barbecue....a very limited choice indeed, falling well below what could be expected of such a resort. Wine, of course, like everywhere in Thailand, was very expensive but I was pleased to note that local beer brands were always available at a reasonable price.
The grounds of the resort – although small in area - were well maintained, pathways safe and kept clean.
As to the island itself...difficult to find the right words. A mere few yards outside of the hotel the scenery changed dramatically. Roads and pathways broken and dangerous...litter everywhere, nook and cranny or on grass verges. The few 'taxis' (pick-up trucks) charged outrageous fees for even short distances and holding on as they bumped and clattered through the narrow, potholed roads was hard to do.
Left and right one saw rubbish piled high, unfinished building projects, plastic film clinging to trees. Pools of stagnant water, tumbling walls, waste items of every kind littering unkempt ground. The entire coastline of this area is overcrowded with hotels and accommodation of many type. Certainly, I found Koh Samet a real disappointment when compared to the likes of Koh Chang...and that's a pity because it could, if given the right attention, be a good 'getaway' from Bangkok for citizens and tourists alike.
It did sadden me when these negatives spun around my mind as I sat aboard the slow, wooden ferry boat, making its way back to the mainland. But, as has always been my wont, 'I tell it as it is'.
- 947AnnT (6/5): Beautiful beach, resort needs maintenance - We have always liked Ao Wai Beach, it's location is fantastic, the sea is very blue, and it's not crowded. Samet Ville Resort occupies this entire beach. The biggest problem with this resort is their staff and their lack of maintenance.
You have to be very careful with your choice of room, as some rooms are renovated and others are not. If you want a decent room, I would suggest the small apartment building directly behind the swimming pool.
Due to booking rather late, we had an Ao Wai room, very close to the beach, but that was all it had going for it. The bed was rock hard, as were the pillows. The room and bathroom were not clean. The shower curtain was full of mould. Spider webs everywhere and just an air of lack of maintenance. The bathroom tap was hardly functional, the towels were grey from age, the TV was from last century. No coffee/tea, kettle provided, the list goes on, but I won't bore the reader.
We booked directly on their website. For this privilege we paid much, much more than on other sites. We were told everything was fully booked except for the room we booked. On arriving at the resort, we found many rooms much nicer than ours were vacant the entire time we where there!
I think this resort is riding on the fact that they have such a beautiful beach that the guests will put up with a little inconvenience for the pleasure of relaxing on the beach.
The restaurant is awful, the food is really not up to standard. The staff however are the absolute worst. You wait a lifetime for your order, or it never arrives at all! The first evening we didn't eat, as the waitress forgot about our order! The second evening she insisted on us waiting while she served a very large group who had arrived and ordered after us! Breakfast which is included, is so poor that I'm not even going to go into it. To say that if you skip breakfast, you won't be missing anything, would be an understatement.
However, all complaints aside, the beach is beautiful and the pool is nice as well.
My advice would be to make very sure that you are getting the room that you have booked. Except for a small handful of rooms on the beach that have been renovated, the rest are dismal. Rather book into the newer section behind the pool, it is still very close to the beach. Don't book on the website, you will pay much more!
Some advice for those who want to party, this resort is not for you. The restaurant closes at 9pm, and the entire resort is dead quiet by that time.
Transport on the island is limited and expensive. If you wanting to chill at this resort and beach, it would be a good idea to rent a motorcycle so that you can get around the island and explore or try one of the many other restaurants on Koh Samet.
Having said all that, we will stay there again, but we have done our research and will make sure we occupy a decent room. It is a pity that the resort is not maintained to a higher standard and that the staff are completely disinterested in their guests. This could be a really wonderful resort, at the moment it is just average.
- poutchana (6/5): Nice beach but that's all - We keep going there because of the beach and the white sand. But apart from this, this resort is really average. The staffs are not the most experience in service, breakfast is too basic and the rooms are very different from one to another.
It is also difficult to move from this beach to other places. Good for a shirt stay, on the white sand beach.
- felixw422 (2/5): What an embarrassing, unpleasant experience - Fortunately we didn't stay there. Only came To the beach (which is very nice). We went to their restaurant and we greeted very ... Actually no, we weren't greeted at all. She just dropped the menu on our table without even looking at us. That was just the start. To keep it short, the wait was very long for no apparent reason other than they simply not giving a s**t. The food was just bearable and their shakes we so bad that we immediately refused. Again: fortunately we didn't stay there. My advise: stay somewhere else, and come to the beach with a motorbike, then leave again and don't spend any money here. I've rarely met such arrogance in Thailand before.
