Location was perfect, especially if you love the outdoors. Short walking distance to the meadow, river and the lake. The landscaping was immaculate and impressive. Lots of public indoor sitting areas in front of the fireplace, at the front porch and other places within or around the property. Definitely a place to return and highly recommend it. Small town charm.

- Lee (10/5): Back to the Bidwell House! - First off, this is an historic resort, and it is not air conditioned. Our room had a tower fan that ran continually and as soon as it cooled down at night, we got the windows open. Second, this is not a resort for small children, as there isn’t really much for them to do - no pool, no playground. However it is an excellent place for adults to use as a base of operations for exploring in the area. Great breakfast, a wonderful main lodge and patio, as well as a porch swing out front. As a historic building be prepared to see the age, in some creaky boards in the walkways, and a bit of a struggle to get the windows open or closed. But it’s all so worth it! We will certainly be back.

- nancy (10/5): - We stayed 2 night mid week in the suite- two bedrooms. It was a large space and we enjoyed the comfortable beds. The shared areas were delightful- tables and cushion chairs to relax in , as well as more ares inside the house. Breakfast is from 8:30-9:30, so you can sleep in and go down to a breakfast that is made for once you arrive. Delicious and the coffee was nice and bold!

- Fred (8/5): - Nice, comfortable B&B inn. We spent three nights at Bidwell House. My wife enjoyed our breakfasts more than I did. Our host, Eva, was informative and helpful with suggestions about what to do in the area (Lake Almenor & Mt. Lassen). Mt. Lassen was a great NP to visit - and we went to three different parts of the park on each of our three days based in Chester.

Breakfast is delicious and served by Eva. They also have The Red Onion restaurant on the Peninsula. Wonderful food also.
- rope124 (10/5): Visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park - We stayed at the Bidwell House for three nights while visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park. We stayed in the Robin's Roost room which was very clean, spacious with a comfortable bed. Eva was a wonderful hostess, making a delicious breakfast each morning and providing great insights into areas to see within and outside the Park. She also has an honor wine and beverage fridge in the porch and chocolate chip cookies and apples available in the main parlor. While Chester is a small town, there are several good restaurants and a wonderful bakery in town. We recommend staying at Bidwell House if you are visiting Lassen.

- Frances (6/5): Wish our stay had been better! - For what I paid, it certainly wasn't as nice as I thought it would be. It was $527 for two nights. Our room was very dark and not much lighting. I realize it is a very old historical building, but they need to update some maintenance and repair. The window sill in our room was broken. It looked like there was some type of dowel to hold the window up. I tried to do that and the heavy window sill came down hard on my thumb! I'm glad my daughter was nearby to lift the window off of my hand! I mentioned it to someone in the office. My nail bed is sore and still black and blue. The best thing about our stay was the view of the backyard. The breakfast was also delightful and the girls who served us were very conscientious and sweet.
- Larry W (10/5): - This is a traditional BnB in a homey setting on green and pleasant grounds. The building is an old hotel with a rear two story wing of rooms. Our room, the Rose Room , was airy and spacious. The breakfast was served either inside or outside on patio tables. It was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend Bidwell House.

- 169nancyw (4/5): Not worth the high price - I’m unclear how or when this property received a 3 star rating as it’s barely a 2. Thank goodness I always travel with disposable slippers as the old carpet was dirty. They hung mosquito netting above the bed that had dead bugs in it. I always check for bed bugs, thankfully none, but the chocolate brown velour blanket had visible accumulation of dust on it. The sheets were old. No soap dish. Furniture was not antique, but more garage sale and in poor condition. No coffee maker, so if you are an early riser and want to enjoy the sunrise on the front porch with a cup of coffee, you are out of luck until 8:30. The windows and doors are not sealed, so bring ear plugs, I did, but not much help against the loud traffic. This is such a darling property. Too bad it has not been maintained and updated. Until recently they haven’t had any competition. Now they do. I’ll take my business to the Timber House Lodge.

- Nicky (10/5): - If you are staying in Chester to visit Lassen Park, as we did, this is definitely the place to stay. It has so much character and the rooms are all individual. The grounds are perfect for enjoying an evening drink. The breakfast was amazing - especially as they were able to accommodate a vegan and a celiac sufferer in our party. Little touches included an honesty bar and free sherry in the lounge area. We didn’t stay as it was such lovely weather but there was plenty of room to hang out in the indoor sitting areas too. We were so happy to have stayed here rather than the Best Western down the road.

We enjoyed the quiet in the evening after our visit to the Lassen national park. I definitely recommend this place.

- Cathleen (10/5): - This charming bed and breakfast captured my heart. We stayed in the Bidewell suite. This house was built many decades ago. It has been charmingly updated. The attention to architectural detail and updated dated bathrooms were excellent choices by the owners. Additionally, the rooms were decorated with antique pieces to give the establishment a personal touch. The hotel staff were courteous and helpful making sure our every need was met. There was a communal pantry for ice or storage of foods we brought in. I highly recommend this B&B without reservation.

We had a glass of wine on the very well kept grounds and even played some outdoor games in the backyard. - Home (10/5): Great Experience at Bidwell House - We arrived at the Bidwell and folllowed the instructions to call reception. Eva, the Inn Keeper greeted us and explained the amenities at Bidwell House. The property is a historic building so it has lots of character. The room we booked has been updated and was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was served every morning in the dining area and was a different egg based item that were all very different from the previous day and all very good. The Innkeeper Eva was very friendly and her staff were all nice and accomodating. We will definitely stay there again when in the area.

- amyaZ8332YC (2/5): Bidwell House has lost a long-time loyal customer - I've stayed at Bidwell House a few times over the last 5 years and had a positive experience there in the past. However, they've officially lost a loyal customer (and a regular source of referrals) after the terrible customer service I received from the owner/manager this week. I booked a reservation (via Expedia) back in September because I wanted to take my family somewhere special to celebrate an early Thanksgiving. We've had a super tough year, so this trip was important to us, and I picked Bidwell House because we wanted to visit Lassen. However, we all ended up with Covid this week, and when I called Expedia on Monday and told them my situation, and they called and got the owner/manager of Bidwell House on the phone, she refused to give us a refund - even a partial one. Granted, I should have read the fine print with Expedia, but I missed it... so, I asked if we could at least change the reservation to another weekend. ANY weekend. Because obviously, we would be there in a heartbeat if we weren't sick. The owner/manager refused again, saying they were closing after next weekend and wouldn't be re-opening in 2023. So, now we are laid up with Covid, out of $500, and I'm shocked by how utterly ungracious and unhelpful this woman has been. They have lost a loyal customer for good at this point, and if the Bidwell House is indeed closing down in 2023, then perhaps it's for the best... until they re-open under new management.

- travelinfam25 (8/5): Great atmosphere and location, very friendly owners, great breakfast - I stayed here with my son for three nights in mid May, as a base for going to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It's a beautiful property, it reminded us of a Southern plantation. A plaque on it says it was built in 1901. It does show its age some, and much of the outside walkways could use some paint touch ups. The boards also creak a lot, so if someone is up before or after you walking around upstairs or past your door, you will likely hear it. It felt very homey, with lots of odds and ends and fun touches throughout the rooms and lobby, and the owners are super friendly- you can tell they really enjoy what they do. Breakfast each morning, from 8:30-9:30, was delicious. They accommodated my son's celiac disease by offering gluten free toast. I like super soft beds and the bed was a bit hard for me the first night, but I got used to it and had no issues the 2nd or 3rd night. There is no AC but there is a heating system. Our room was kinda dark and old-fashioned. It was big and the shower water was hot, but for almost 200 a night it could have been a bit fancier. But I suppose that's part of the Inn's charm, it's homey, not fancy. The Inn is located at the far end of the one main stretch of road going through Chester, and has a lot of things within easy walking distance, including a bike rental shop, restaurants, and a general store. If I came back to Chester I might do a cursory look for a cheaper option first (I heard some sort of logging convention- not kidding- was in town when we were there, so rooms were scare), but I would be perfectly happy staying at the Inn again too. It has great atmosphere and the owners are very friendly.

- chrissnelson (8/5): Beautiful Property - I traveled to Lassen Volcanic Park and stayed here for two nights. This is an historic bed & breakfast. Things are kept in that decor. There is a large area for gathering or playing games. Wine and Pepsi are available for a reasonable fee. There is a cookie jar that sometimes has cookies. There is nobody to check you in but there are envelopes with instructions and key. The innkeepers are available by phone if you need anything. I never saw Filip but Eva was around a bit and she is really nice and helpful. I was in the Hunter Glen room on the ground floor. There are maybe a total of 8 or 9 rooms with the first floor having a ramp. The room is decent size and I bet is handicap friendly. It is a bit noisy at times as the wood planks creak and there is noise from the upstairs. There is no A/C but there is a fan and you can close the curtains. Some rooms have a fireplace and DVD player, ours didn't. There is an outside fridge for guest use. Also, plenty of firewood. It was very hot (over 100) so we didn't really take advantage of the amenities (Bocce ball, ladder golf, badmitton), Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are always available and free. The breakfast was hot and wonderful. There is a dining room or a few tables to eat/visit outside on the patio. Wifi was iffy.

- 713clarks (10/5): So Happy We Stayed Here! - The Bidwell House is old and charming. The owners, Eva and Filip, have done a wonderful job in maintaining its original character. They are also very hospitable and seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. Our room was large and the bathroom included a jet tub. We arrived in the middle of intense heat, so were a bit dismayed that rooms are not air conditioned. No problem as nighttime temps were in the 50's -- perfect sleeping weather! Breakfasts were a delight -- just the right amount of food, creatively prepared. There is nothing fancy about The Bidwell House and that's what made it perfect.
