Guest Reviews
- Percy (8/5): - Close to amenities
- Suzanne (2/5): - I don’t recommend to stay as there are people living there permanently that are very noisy with know consideration.
- Ian (2/5): - The motel appears to be used for social housing. That is not compatible with casual travellers.
- Haryanto (8/5): Okay - It's okay for one night stay.
- Moana (10/5): - Loved that we were arrived early and could park our car up and walk over to the beach for a swim before checking in
- Tania (4/5): - Very run down and untidy
- Isaac (2/5): - Didn't tell me I'd have a room mate until I walked into my room & saw someone else's luggage.
- Sarah-Jane (6/5): - Absolutely fine for a nights sleep. This place perfect if you need a (not overly romantic) night to stop when driving through Auckland. You get what you’re paying for, and by Auckland standards it fit the cost :)
- Jean (8/5): - I liked the courtyard.
There wasn't enough warm bedding luckily we had our own otherwise we would have been cold. Also nowhere dry in the shower to put clean clothes. Otherwise very pleasant.
Didn't see any staff but didn't need them - key was left in an envelop for us.
- Abby (2/5): - I wouldn't recommend Pillows lodge to anyone. Unruly residence, unsafe environment, dirty, falsely advertised, said they provide linen & towels but didn't receive any. Lucky I had brought my own blanket for it was the only thing I had to sleep with. Kitchen was very dirty.
Management unfriendly & unhelpful. Will never go there again.
- hilary (2/5): - We prebooked for two days over Kings birthday and left after 15 mins... It became obvious it was accomodation for emergency housing. I don't have a problem with this but it shouldn't be listed as accomodation for tourists and others wanting a relaxing stay. We felt unsafe. Also the shower smelt. Surely the owner is getting enough money from Winz to not have to rent our further rooms? Avoid staying here.
- Alison (6/5): - The sheets were clean, place did what we needed so was ok for the price
- Tetsuya (8/5): - Kitchen is too dark. Needs some good pans, etc.
Room was OK. Good location good deal with the cheap price.
- Benji (2/5): - There was nobody at reception and my key was in a envelope taped to the reception door so anyone could have taken it. There were other people stayijg there that were smoking marijuana and one of them even had a dog. The bed was the noisiest bed on the planet, any slight movement durijg the night was loud enough to wake you up.
I would never stay here again and would not recomend it to anyone
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The worst place I've been
- allison (2/5): - grounds were totally unkemp, everything needed painting. tatty and grotty. I did not stay there and went to a family members place
- Vicky (8/5): - W
- Beryl (2/5): - Didnt like anything, very unsafe place to stay.
- Gabriela (2/5): - The staff was friendly but the place was absolutely run down. We arrived later than 5pm after we had contacted the manager who kindly had put out the key. We had a look around the premises and felt immediately unsafe with people hanging around the place as if it was emergency housing. And so we found out that it is. I believe that it is not okay to put tourists into an accommodation like this. This should not happen for both sides. We know the person who has build Pillows many years ago and it was a terrible experience to find Pillows like that! However we left in a haste as I got quite upset. It was very difficult to find another accommodation and we had to pay a lot of money in Orewa. When we came back to let the manager know, he already had charged us for the night. I can understand that there need to be cancellation fees, however for this place which should be not permitted to be advertised and offered as accommodation, it is even more upsetting for me to pay so much money for being misinformed. We talked to locals and everybody said that it has been emergency housing, that Police would be turning up there on a regular base. As much as I support emergency housing, one cannot not offer these premises as accommodation and charge money for it. The manager did his job, but I will try to retrieve my money, if necessary with legal action as it needs to stop to invite people to stay there and pay money. If we can get refunded, I am happy to not take any further action.
- Anne (2/5): - Very tired and rundown property, quite seedy - left and sought alternative accomodation for the night
- Steve (2/5): - Did not feel safe.
- Valerie (2/5): - The photo must have been taken 30 years ago and nothing has been done since. The bathroom basin was away from the wall and the taps turned around when trying to turn them on for water. No hot water at the basin, what water came was a dribble. The drapes were dirty and mouldy, the shower walls were peeling paint and rotten boards. The whole place was a mess. The only good thing was nice clean bed linen and towels. This should never be let out as first class accomodation. We didn't enter the kitchen or lounge as the down and outs were all there. They did say Hello though.
- Andrea (8/5): - The room was very clean. The shared bathroom facilities not so much on arrival but was cleaned everyday.
- Krolle (2/5): - Room was ok except broken latches on windows and chair was broken too. Bathroom was in poor sad state. Had someone yelling screaming and swearing next door which kept us up alll noght so left after 1 night to stay elsewhere. Wouldn't go back.
- Jackie (4/5): - Bed was clean and tidy.
Bathroom was a disgrace -
toilet seat did not fit
tap over basin had been pulled out of fitting, no plug
shower control too high (I'm 5'6")
shower surround broken all around shower
Looks like room had been flooded
- Michael (4/5): - Great location Folthy run down ammenities
- David (2/5): - Don’t bring your kids to this place!
Dog poo on the courtyard grass, drunk residence, foul language no covid protocols observed.
We left two hours after arriving.
Disgusting!
- Paul (10/5): - Close to town
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great crew of guests, very welcoming
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Walking distance to shopping & eateries & beach front.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Some of the types staying there
- Margaret (4/5): One nights stay was enough so dissappointing . - I was dissapointed as I have been there before & so much has changed.
Tv had plug hanging down with holes in the wall from them moving plug points never been fixed. The taps in the bathroom on hand basin were so loose so had to hold them with both hands.Curtains
didnt match in the room.
Shower ceiling needs a clean as mould on it.
Generally so disappointed.I certainly wouldnt go back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Perfect stopover if a bed for the night is all you need.
- E.C. (6/5): - Person at reception was very helpful. Booking on Wotif I selected "Deluxe" room which in amenities listed "Bathroom". On arrival found this room had no bathroom so had to pay additional fee for ensuite bathroom. Overall clean but dark cobwebs on ceiling and stained net curtains. No water glass in room. Very handy shops and beach.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The lawns at the back could be a lot tidier around the edges and although the bathroom is outdated the facility was clean and the shower pressure was very good.I would stay again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There was no soap in the bathroom. Everything else was ok for the cost of the room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It needs doing up, an old property. Too expensive for what it is
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Outside & property a bit run down. Not really a "motel' definitely more a backpackers.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very basic, very clean, amenities could be improved.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - My husband and I spent our Wedding night here 4 years ago. At that point it would have been rated 2.5.
This stay for our 4 year anniversary and valentines day it was well below par. The service was terrible. There was always someone yelling. The police turned up with a forensic investigator the first night due to who knows what!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - One of the bunk beds was covered in ants so my children could not sleep on it. The walls a very thin and you can hear the conversations through the walls.
Seemed clean enough. Only used to sleep for the night didn't use kitchen or showers etc as just want to leave.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - It was a DUMP of note...would not hv stayed there for free... linen was prob only clean thing there...carpets were filthy. 1 bedlamp. No aircon. Asked if we cud pse use freezer in communal kitchen and was told NO. People next door to us partied till 6.00am. Sumone tried opening our door middle of the night. Was told WINZ uses this place for homeless.. was a pitiful dump with very unhelpful management
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Outside of property and tidyness wasn't very good, generally it looked run down.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I should have read the previous reviews. Shower was horrendously dirty full of mould on ceiling. This is a backpackers and worth half of what we paid.
- Jacqueline (2/5): Horrendous service - Selected pay on arrival. But on arrival he had already accessed my account and taken payment without my permission. Without notifying me and he didn't see that as a breach of conditions or fraud or theft or any issue as there is a cancelation policy. I hadn't cancelled. I was there. New from reviews is wasn't great but this experience made it worse. The court yard was smelly. The room was dark with cobwebs. Only good thing I have to say is that the bed was comfortable
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The place was a disgrace when we arrived to retire there was a prostitute plying her wares, The room was very basic and not as advertised, we had to park on the main road as there was no available parking spaces. No extra pillows only 2 very thin ones, all just very disappointing really.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Disappointed at lack of facilities. Only 2 lots of milk supplied. Would have preferred a motel type of accommodation.
- Steve (2/5): - Whilst we knew it wouldn't be a 5 star experience we didn't expect what we got. Icebox in fridge was so frozen over that nothing could be put in it, rubber seals on fridge door were disgusting. Room stunk of cigarettes, ash on window sill. Walls in toilet were filthy with god knows what. Rusty rubbish bin beside toilet looked like it was covered in excrement. No cleaning appears to happen behind doors. Sadly we spoke to two different families who are being put up there by MSD whilst they await accommodation.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Let's just say you get what you paid for..........
- Philip (2/5): - Catering to down-on-their-luck long-term residents, one of whom tried to climb through the window at 3am!
