Guest Reviews
- Henk (10/5): - Unique building (very old), very nice staff! Good bar.
- Charles (2/5): - Wensleydale pub and hotel in a great location in this picturesque village.
As a pub,the fifteenth century inn works well with a choice of good beers. As a hotel, it's a disaster with very shabby ,cold rooms poorly furnished and with many defects.
I can make allowances for the age of the property and the effects of the storm but the lack of basic maintenance and absence of customer focus is appalling. The heating system is capable but needs to be available 24 hours in rooms with no insulation and draughty windows. The attitude of the management team is defensive rather than accepting responsibility and correcting or fixing what is wrong/broken. Learn from my bad mistake and avoid this hotel.
- christine (6/5): - Breakfast was nice
- Wendy (10/5): Pet-friendly pub - A lovely old hotel with good food and cosy rooms. Very pet-friendly, although dogs aren't allowed in the breakfast room. I'd certainly love to stay here again.
- garry (10/5): We enjoyed our stay, lovely welcoming staff - The place is an old pub and whilst it is a little tired decor wise, this was clear from the pictures online. We had a request which wasn't passed on to the hotel, but the staff were so friendly and accommodating that it wasn't a problem. Location is lovely a quiet dales village with lovely views. Stayed one night and we both slept well. Some general maintenance of the premises wouldn't go amiss, and I would suggest a small information pack could be provided on the rooms for future guests.
- Barry John (4/5): - When we arrived the room had been double booked, Expedias fault, i would never ever book through them again, worst booking company i have come across and still trying to get my money back
- Andrea (6/5): - The hotel is old which means the toilets don’t flush properly, the shower has no power and the water is lukewarm. There is no soundproofing therefore you can hear the people in the next room as if they were in your room.
The food is good, however they do not have a children’s menu.
- John (10/5): Problematic beard growth - The staff were wonderfully friendly but especially the lovely cleaning lady who went all the way back to her home to get me a razor. I’d left mine behind and had to go to a wedding.
- Graham (8/5): - No showering facilities in the room I booked only a bath for which I was unaware of at the time. I sustained a broken back in 2011, so was unable to use the bath. Thankfully, on the 2nd last day we quickly used a shower in a vacant room with the landlord's permission. Staff are great along with the 1445 ambiance of the Inn.
- Chris (2/5): - Booked 6 rooms, only 5 available, temporary manager and her pet dogs staying in the other one. Disappointing stay with no food available after 7pm, in the evening, as we arrived at 7.15pm (I have made at least 10 attempts to to confirm the timings of the restaurant in the previous week, but no one answered the phone) . A shame because it is such a beautiful area. We were all very tired after a long day walking for charity and this was not appreciated. Clean with comfortable beds though.
- Liz (6/5): - This is a very old building, in a beautiful little village. We shared a quadruple room as we had a three year old with us. Two of the beds were really comfy but the third had springs sticking through, so we gave that one a miss. Breakfast, which we wern't expecting, was really good with a selection of toasts and cereals and then a choice of hot food, Lovely friendly staff. Only downside was the bedroom windows, which wouldn't open and the weather was really hot. We had a fan which helped.
- Neil (10/5): - fab
- Victoria (10/5): - Friendly and welcoming staff. 4 poster bed. Lovely breakfast.
- G (10/5): Highly recommend - Really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Freindly staff, a great pub with fine real ale, nice food and comfortable room.
- Mark (2/5): - Horrific experience! We arrived in a foreign country, excited to check in, only to be met with a disaster. They told us at check-in that our room was unavailable because a ceiling had fallen in (we had 2 rooms booked) All other rooms were already book. (What happened to our 2nd room?)
The front desk said there was nothing they could do - now we had to search for a new hotel with 3 children!
To top it off, at our new hotel, we met two other families who had been given the exact same excuse! Turns out, this place is just overbooking and kicking people to the curb at 7 PM. Avoid this hotel at all costs unless you enjoy being stranded.
- Henry (6/5): - Great central location; ideal for touring. The staff were friendly and overall good value for money. However the bedrooms were tired and needed an uplift. Our biggest criticism were that bedroom windows could not be opened (locked and painted shut). On what was the hottest days of the year so far there was little or no ventilation.
- Stephen (8/5): - Had a lovely stay at hotel, they were very friendly and helpful. Would stay again!
- Catherine (8/5): Our stay - Nice stay, room clean. Could do with a welcome pack with menu and times food is served. Ate at venue food good basic pub grub.
- Julie (10/5): Julie - It was really good. The couple running it were really nice and helpful. Room a bit basic but.nice comfy bed and lovely cotton sheets and towels. They have only been there 6 weeks so early days yet. I think they have plans and have taken on a big project. Good luck to them both.
- Wayne (2/5): Tired and shabby - The staff were all very friendly and helpful
But the hotel was run down , shabby and unclean
A good clean on everything would not go amiss
The toilet seat was lose , no toilet rolls in the downstairs toilets, our bathroom/ toilet was dirty and not very well kitted out
The room was adequate but again it needed a good clean and everything was abit worn and shabby looking
The kettle worked but cups etc were dirty and stained
A good thing , the bed looked lumpy and uncomfortable but was surprisingly very comfortable
The breakfast table and cutlery was dirty
But surprisingly the food was quite good
Unfortunately we could not stay the days we had booked , after ONE night we decided to checkout , I would therefore ask for a refund as the amount we paid per night was an absolute disgrace , regarding the state of the hotel / pub
I think I would only recommend this for the food , but then just barely , it’s ok if you clean your cutlery beforehand
I think the owners of said establishment if they can , should try and update everything spending cash on and in the premises and then hire a good set of cleaners as it is a large hotel / pub
- Julian (6/5): - The property was obviously old and a little short of investment in decoration, room facilities and general cleanliness, but NOT so poor to inhibit a stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly in all areas with evening meals and breakfast, (except instant coffee!), very good.
The small town is in a beautiful setting showing off rural dales countryside.
- Boris (2/5): - On 3-5 /8/24 we have stayed for 2 nights at the Rose & Crown Hotel in Bainbridge, Yorkshire. We came after a long hard day and were very tied. First we given the room number 8 , but after we came in and took out all our stuff, it tended out that it was impossible to use the toilet because it was blocked with something. The staff asked us to leave the room and tried to fix the problem for a while, but in vain. So we were moved to the room number 4 , but some time after we have entered, it tended out that the toilet door was half broken (it was impossible to close it till the end and staff member tried to help us with this, but in vain) and that the water in the shower sink drained very very slowly, so we had to stay like in the sort of "lake" and wait for the water to drain. The personal of the hotel apologized a lot once again and we were given a glass of beer each and next day we were moved to the room number 14. Unfortunately in this room there was no internet, the water stream was very weak and there was no hot water. We think that
In theese circumstances it was absolutely unacceptable . We spoke with the manager Wendy about the refund money at least for the first night. She has said that in such a circumstances our request seems legitimate and that she is going to check it and will give us the answer by e-mail within several days. Unfortunately, despite several phone conversations with Wendy and other staff members, we haven't received any answer till today
- Denzil (10/5): - Very welcoming and made to fell at home will DEFINATLY staying there again
- Leigh (10/5): I would definitely stay here again. - I arrived late (after a long day cycling) but all the staff were super friendly. My bike was placed in a safe room overnight 👍
The chef agreed to stay later than usual to take my order, which was great and plentiful.
I was made to feel like a local !!
I ordered an omelette for breakfast which was great and made by the singing chef 😂
Very friendly place in an absolutely gorgeous location.
- mark (2/5): Very poor stay! - Poor run down hotel. Shower didn’t work. Toilet didn’t flush. Didn’t have bread for toast at breakfast as well as other breakfast items missing. Tiny tv in rooms. Poor menu lack of options for evening meal. Hotel Needs updating.
- Antonio (6/5): Tired place.. - Everything average.
Condition, cleaning, breakfast, power of the shower,
The "hotel"... Pub, is very tired!
It would have been ok if I had paid a cheap price.. But I paid £ 91
I
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The rooms were dirty with dog hair all over the carpet. The 4 poster bed moved if you leaned on the head board and seemed like it was going to collapse. The beer glasses smelled like they hadn’t been washed and when we said our room toilet didn’t work we were told to just use the ones in the pub. We were hiking so stayed anyway but will not be back.
- Martyn (4/5): Great location but in need of investment - Room was cold, shower likewise.
- Margaret (10/5): Overnight sleep in a four poster bed - We stayed at the Rose & Crown for an overnight stop, on our way back to Bristol from a weeks holiday in Scotland.
The hotel has been there since 1455, lots of history, we found it to be a very cosy and quaint. Real wood fires making the snug cosy and warm. Manager and staff were lovely and friendly nothing too much trouble.
Food was excellent as was the service.
Our room was comfortable the four poster bed was so comfortable I didn’t want to get out of it.
Breakfast was good great choice.
Will definitely book to stay here again.
- Antony (10/5): - A nice place to get away from the modern way of life
- Andrew (10/5): - We arrived just at closing time after a hectic drive up from Heathrow.
Rob and William could not have been more welcoming or accommodating. William cooks an awsome breakfast from local produce. The place itself is not perfect but the people more than make up for its little "quirks" bearing in mind it is a very old building.
Thank you Rob and William.
- Nigel (8/5): - Good Food, Staff very good & friendly locals
Hotel rooms a bit tired
- jill (2/5): - Rooms needed some TLC was noisy couldn’t help but hear karaoke til 1 am didn’t sleep well will not be going back
- John (8/5): All good - Friendly People, accommodated all requests, very enjoyable.
- Mr J W (4/5): Run down and not very clean - Room in need of refurbishment and not very clean. Bathroom door coming apart and wouldn’t open fully. Breakfast service curt bordering on rude. Had to ask for dirty cup and spoon to be changed. Breakfast consisted of some boxes of cereal and choice of full English or an omelette. Dead bluebottles and dust on windowsill next to my seat off putting. Stayed in other much better and cheaper places found on Hotels.com so this was disappointing
- Melissa (10/5): - We had a great stay.
Friendly staff and a clean basic room.
Food was lovely and very generous portion size ! The bar had a limited stock of spirits available but there was enough to choose from.
We will go back.
- Steven (10/5): Lovely old inn with lots of character. - The Rose and Crown is a quaint old inn in the heart of the Dales, the staff were very friendly and we had a lovely meal in the atmospheric bar.
- Steven (8/5): - Quaint and friendly.
- Parvin (4/5): - THE LOCATION WAS EXCELLENT.
THE BEDS WERE COMFORTABLE
THE PROPERTY IS POORLY KEPT
THE DINING ROOM SATAFF IS SURLY
CLEANLINESS OF THE BATHROOM AND ROOMS IS VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT
THE WERE DEAD BUGS IN A QUILT.
THE PROPERTY IS POORLY KEPT AND IN NEED OF MAINTENANCE
- Anne-Marie (8/5): 2 night stay with family - The staff were extremely pleasant an helpful, the food was excellent and reasonably priced but unfortunately we stayed on two of the hottest days of the year, the electric fan didn't really cool the room much and the windows didn't open so the nights were uncomfortable with not much sleep. Would stay again if we were in the area.
- Linda (10/5): Dales B and B - Beautiful property in a dale village
- Hannah (10/5): - we liked the location and the food
we didn't like the number of motorbikes revving around
- Diana (8/5): Lovely group stay - Great large group stay. Staff could not do enough for us! Nice food great measures and fab crowd!
Car park superb.
Bathrooms could use a bit of updating but it's a very old building so that won't be easy!!
Recommended.
- Andrew (10/5): - Oldie worldie pub
The staff nothing was too much for them to do to make your stay enjoyable
The food, steak n kidney pie was delicious
Breakfast full English with thick cut bacon
Room 4 poster bed
Will definitely going back
- Peter (6/5): - In the restaurant the services were sticky. Breakfast cups and glasses and cutlery were dirty.
Chips were re-heated, not fresh.
Otherwise the food was good.
- Denis (4/5): - Sadly the state of the shower was a health hazard. There are numerous effective mould treating products on the market which clean grout without a great deal of effort.
Meals were certainly filling but the service disorganized.
- Peter (4/5): - Position and views were lovely. An old hotel in dire need of refurbishment.
- Katrina (10/5): - Lovely location, clean and comfortable accommodation and excellent food. The staff are very friendly and Robert, the manager/singing barman, is a charming host. Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Standard of cleaning very poor. No low-alcohol beer (I might as well have asked for poison) but staff were very conscious of security.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We booked 2 nights here to attend a wedding locally, after a confusion with our initial booking (won’t bore you with the details) we checked in, lovely friendly staff. Our room left a lot to be desired! It was filthy! I checked the bedding and to be fair it was clean, so we stayed the first night. We went down for breakfast the next morning, I looked through the window to the kitchen and didn’t like what I saw, my wife who had sat down said her cutlery was stuck to the table! We went elsewhere for breakfast. We sought somewhere else to stay for our second night, we agreed to pay for our first night (including the breakfast we didn’t eat) A lady visited us in our room and said she was disappointed and would look into our concerns and email us! We’ve heard nothing despite contacting them for an update! Such a shame because it’s a beautiful building in a stunning location, it just needs a lot of TLC (and bleach)
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very welcoming and friendly service, but let down by tired facilities and a less than adequate level of cleanliness
- m (8/5): Just go with it.. - Very friendly staff and a cosy room. Generally the hotel could do with some TLC but it's a building hundreds of years old so if the plumbing makes funny noises and the corridor floor is a bit wonky- go with it.
Cannot fault the food (massive portions) and beer.
Handy base for the 3 peaks, Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Falls.
If in the area I would stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly staff and lovely food
Rooms were shabby, poor shower and door broken
No shower gel or soap
However bedding etc were clean
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very welcoming and friendly hotel - Staff were very welcoming, friendly and attentive - couldn't do enough for us; service was excellent, food was excellent. Local clientele were open and friendly too.
The hotel decor is tired, but then, that is part of its charm.
Would gladly stay here again.
- alan (6/5): Charming but dark with cold showers - Having read the reviews we were not expecting 5* luxury, its a bit rough and ready but it has a lot of charm. However the cold (low flow) shower is a basic you need to get right. Only one other couple at the hotel so its not pressure of numbers using at the same time. Dog wanted to go outside at 10:30pm told to return upstairs and come down via fire escape because downstairs"alarmed". Dog found negotiating steel steps difficult. Very dark down steps and also in yard at the botttom. Not very safe or satisfactory. However our dog was made to feel very welcome.
- Stephen (8/5): - Very friendly hosts and the pies were great
- S (10/5): - Real welcoming place and the staff looked after us brilliantly. We will be back.
- PATRICK (8/5): - lovely stay at the rose and crown the staff were very helpful nothing was too much trouble the food was good . enjoyed a drink in the bar especially with the open fire we chose this hotel so we could enjoy the walking in the area
- y s (8/5): Nice stay - Welcome pets to stay in. Friendly staff. Good food. Worth money
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overnight stay - Bedroom comfortable with view over village green. Meals good. Staff very pleasant. On the downside, Shower did not work very well. No bath mat in en suite. No hairdryer as advertised. No wifi in bedroom. Only available in two small bars downstairs. Advertising does not make this clear. Appears rather run down following my previous visit a few years ago. Rather disappointed. I appreciate that the landlord is very ill but my criticisms are about very basic things. I would hesitate to stay again unless these things are addressed.
- Paul (4/5): - Very tied property
No shower or WiFi
Needs big modernisation
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The building itself is beautiful and could be outstanding. It needs money spending on it. It is so run down, windows do not open due to them being painted over. Doors on the bathroom only hanging on by the mechanism at the top, could not close it at all. The plumbing is something again. I could go on and on.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The room was too small for two, quite stuffy with no ventilation or AC and windows painted closed, no shower and a very small bathtub, no shampoo or wash clothes, only one reading lamp, no electrical outlet for tea kettle, and the beds were very squeaky. Dinner was passable, if old school pub fare.
- raymond (8/5): Nice hotel - A very nice hotel overall
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Expedite has this hotel listed as Leyburn when in fact it is 13 miles away. The hotel stairs were covered in pet hair as was my tray holding the tea and coffee items luckily the bed was clean and fresh. The room was very dated and wi-fi didn't work upstairs. On a positive note the staff were nice. I didn't think it was value for money ! Oh dear X
- Justin (6/5): Below expectations - It’s difficult to be too critical because of the price point for a room and we did arrive with minimal expectations. However, regardless of the price there are basics that must be in place. The room was to be expected, a little dated, but there is no excuse for cobwebs hanging from the ceiling or the fact that they had to provide an electric heater because the room was so cold. The towels were threadbare with holes in them and the shower took 15 minutes (and 2 phone calls to reception) to get warm.
On a positive, the staff were very pleasant and very helpful, the food was excellent and the location is great.
- Verified traveler (4/5): OK overnight hotel in lovely location. - Staff were helpful and pleasant, however the hotel was tired and in need of updating and TLC. Room was dusty and small although beds were very comfy. Food was good with generous portion's.
- Alexandra (6/5): Not so good at the Rose and Crown - Very old hotel with a lot of character in the bar. The village it is situated in is lovely, with a walk over the road to the bridge to see lots of waterfalls in the river and a hydroelectric screw taking the water from the river. The first room we were given was No 10. The lights did not work in the bathroom and the walls looked damp. We spoke to the reception and they moved us into room 8 straight away. Room 8 was a bit of an improvement. In both rooms the base of the bed is too big for the mattress and they were covered in a valance that was covered in marks. The sheet and duvet were clean, but it looked as if they were pressed in a machine which put creases all over them. There were no toiletries except soap. The toilet was a mechanical toilet that was very noisy when flushed. To get a shower you have to run the shower for at least 5 minutes (it was probably longer than that) to get hot water. When we enquired about hot water at reception we were told because it is an old building it takes a long time for the water to reach all the rooms. Most of the staff were nice enough. The hotel could be lovely but it needs serious money spending on it. The rooms needs re plumbing , new electrics ( the switch where the kettle was was hanging off the wall). The wallpaper needs to be removed and walls painted as the wallpaper is creased everywhere. The beds and bedding need to be improved. The cleaner also needs to clean cobwebs from corners and clean the radiators.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Bainbridge stay. - The bedrooms were fairly primitive and very small, but the staff were very friendly, the food good and the bed comfortable.
