- Samantha (10/5): Reiko was an amazing host. Great stay!! 10/10 - The property was in such a great location and was so clean and tidy and welcoming when we arrived. It was cosy and warm and everything was explained to us in detail. The beds are the most comfortable on our trip! Like sleeping in a warm cloud! 😂🫶

- edgard (10/5): Séjour exceptionel. A refaire absolument. - Hébergement très charmant, très bien situé, notamment par rapport aux différents centre d’intérêt de la ville.
Très propre et calme.
La propriétaire d’une extrême gentillesse et discrète. Tout était parfait.

- amiros (10/5): Real home in traditional Kyoto - We were four friends exploring Japan. I myself visited Kyoto more than ten times in the past and this time I looked for a place inside Gion. It is a typical authentic house of two stories. Very convenient, you have all you need. Location is superb. The check in is convenient and the contact person answers any question within minutes. We really felt at home. The small Japanese garden created a special atmosphere We did not see any point to improve. We all miss this place.
- Elisabeth (9/5): We loved our time in Gion and the experience of living in a traditional style home. - The house is a beautiful traditional Japanese townhouse very well located in Gion. I liked the bath especially. While the lounge suited the decor it was very uncomfortable.
- jodi (10/5): Wonderful it was sad to say goodbye - Beautiful traditional Japanese House. The beds were the best on our whole trip.
It was great to have a washing machine & dryer as well as 2 toilets.
Thank you Reiko Everything was great.

- Corrina (10/5): Beautiful and comfortable property - It was a wonderful location and the property was beautifully & thoughtfully maintained As a less than agile person, I was worried about sleeping so low to the floor but slept extremely well and just had to think about how to get up.

- Alli (10/5): We had a peaceful, magical time here! - This property was exceptionally clean, peaceful, and unique. It's located in an amazing area of Gion, and was walking distance to many amazing things, including Kiyomizu Dera temple.
- Nikki (10/5): It is a beautiful house, and the neighborhood is great. - Everything was perfect. Could not have asked for more.
- Randy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacob (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay here during our visit to Kyoto! We loved the traditional style and how easy it made our trip with a group of 6. The bedrooms can easily be configured to your group, and there's also plenty of space to spend time together in common areas. The hosts were very communicative and friendly. We did have to meet the hosts when checking in, which adds a layer of logistical detail to be aware of.
- Grindrod (10/5): Exceptional - The host went well above expectations. One of our group had really bad chafing. We asked where was the chemist, and she told us. Then, before we had settled in, she returned with cream for us.
The house was amazing and very clean
Would highly recommend
- Paul (9/5): Great property, outstanding location and excellent host - Host met us at the property
- Jacqui (9/5): Superb -
- Joe (9/5): Superb -
- Dixie (10/5): Fantastic host - Beautifully kept traditional home near major sites in Kyoto. The host was incredible! They mailed a shirt to us that we accidentally forgot. Definitely recommend.
- Julian (9/5): Superb - Beds were great
- Mashari (1/5): Bad -
- Nivi (10/5): Great traditional home in a great location! - The host was extremely helpful and accommodating, meeting us when we arrived and answering all questions promptly. The location was also great and walkable to many things. There was some street noise, but that can't be avoided in the area
- Helena (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful house, very convenient and central but in a non-touristy side street
Very peaceful but every detail aesthetic and thought through.
Extremely hospitable owner, very professional.
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kaiser (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (9/5): Great self contained accommodation in the heart of Gion - Clean, in a great area, and very comfortable ..there was a supermarket very close and cafes as well
- Audrey (7/5): Enriching but very tiring. We had very little sleep in the 3 nights we booked. - The location was perfect. The house has everything you may want just a few minutes walk away. Most amazing sightseeing, amenities, souvenir shopping, restaurants, high street shopping and nightlife. The blinds in the bedrooms offered no light block. We were awake every day by 5.30am
The rooms overlooking the street were noisy.
Paper thin walls and motorcycles racing down the road felt literally a few centimeters away from our heads. House advertised as sleeps 6. We were 5 adults and felt restricted.
- James (10/5): Couldn’t have found a better home and location in Kyoto - Beautiful home, great location
- Caroline (10/5): Incredible machiya in a brilliant location with a wonderful host - can’t recommend highly enough! - Incredible machiya in a brilliant location with a wonderful host - can’t recommend highly enough!
- Garner (10/5): Perfect Kyoto experience - A beautiful authentic tiny Japanese home perfectly located. Reiko was a wonderful and attentive host. Highly recommend

- John (10/5): An accommodating host. If we are ever lucky enough to visit Gion again, we would happily stay here again. - Ideally located in Gion
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful house and the location is great! You're down the street from Maiko Ya if you want a performance, a 15 minutes walk from Minamiza Theater and just a bit further from Nishiki market. The house itself is beautiful, the futon beds are super comfortable. The host was also great and very accommodating. The only thing to be mindful of is that the dining room/kitchen downstairs is the only place without tatami floors. Hence you can't really take your heavy suitcase upstairs as it will damage the tatami. There is plenty of storage under the stairs to store them but if you're super set on having them in your room it might be difficult.
- Paul (10/5): Superb authentic house in quiet street in the middle of the historic Gion district in Kyoto. Thoroughly recommended - Historic old house that had been beautifully and authentically restored with just enough new technology to make the stay an absolute delight. Special call out to Rieko who made the stay hassle free
- Mauro (9/5): Superb - Terrace was pleasant. Great location. Only thing to improve would be blinds in the main bedroom. Room gets quite bright early in the morning.
- Irene (10/5): Exceptional - Delicious house in the middle of the old town. Comfortable and soft tatami. Absolutely amazing
- Ilona (10/5): Experience traditional accommodation in Kyoto with excellent Hosts. - Reiko our host was in contact with us and very accommodating to our pre & post stay requests. We were close to all attractions, food and transport. We would highly recommend staying here. Kyoto was a beautiful picturesque town.
Fallas family - Sydney Australia
- Tatje (10/5): Wonderful experience for family of four - The location, the comfortable space inside, the washer/dryer, the big bath tub, the heaters and kitchen. It’s a beautiful traditional Japanese home that we loved staying at I agree with another American review that it would be nice to have loveseat or small couch to relax on at the end of the day. We are not used to sitting on the floor, yet we really did enjoy getting out of comfort zone and enjoying the simple surroundings.
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional - The property is located in the very centre of Geon.
- Yames (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (9/5): Great place to stay in Kyoto - Nice change with traditional Japanese style accommodation. Very close to all the sites, restaurants and shops and had everything you need. The beds were surprisingly very comfortable and the accommodation had 3 bedrooms which was perfect with our 2 x adult children. The steps up to the bedrooms are very steep, was ok for us but just be aware of this.
- Tatiana (10/5): Beautiful house in a great location - The house was perfect in every way, well equipped, well located, beautiful, and the host was very helpful and accommodating. Will definitely recommend this property to friends and family.
- Roger (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tom (10/5): Very comfortable and relaxing stay - Amazing home in an amazing area! Leaving
- Tanya (9/5): Superb - Personal greeting from owner who was very lovely. No couch…😂 But understand it’s a traditional Japanese home just would have liked somewhere more comfortable to chill apart from bed.
- Lea (10/5): Best house in best Area - Just perfect ! The host was kind, helpful and the place is in the best area
- Jordan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eloise (9/5): We loved our stay at Gion Kyuraku! - Great location. Reiko, our host, was so friendly and helpful with answering our queries and providing recommendations. The house was a little tight for five of us, particularly given my husband is very tall so found the low ceiling on the stairs tricky. However, that is to be expected given its age.
- Bronwen (10/5): Great stay, central location and convenient amenities - Fantastic location and mixture of traditional Japanese with mod cons. Host extremely flexible, hospitable and professional. Allowed us to leave our bags early which was a big bonus. Nothing
- Xiu (9/5): Superb -
- Orit (10/5): Perfect home in Kyoto - Lovely Japanese home in a perfect location, walking distance to temples, town, grocery store, very clean, traditional and comfortable. Kitchen was great for cooking, and we enjoyed it so much we asked to stay another day! Owner was lovely and very accommodating. Highly recommend! No negatives
- Luisa (10/5): Exceptional - I never met the owner directly but my daughters did and she was adorable with them. The house is beautiful and we’ll equipped. I which we had a sofa in the leaving room but I know they keep it like that as a traditional house because of the tatami floors. But because of that we where not able to use it.
- Kevin (9/5): Loved this place. - Great location. Good AC. Small and tight but typical for Japan.
- Laura (10/5): Lovely authentic home in historic part of Kyoto. -
- Catherine (10/5): Charming historical house close to everything - Book this property! It is a beautifully renovated historical property in a quaint neighbourhood. It has all the lovely features associated with Kyoto - feature garden, tatami mats, rice paper sliding doors. But it also has little comforts that we missed in other accommodation places - good quality doonas and linen, chairs in the bedroom, small balcony to enjoy the afternoon, books. Make no mistake, it is small in scale but our family of five was still comfortable with a lot of luggage. We saw multiple Geishas, we chatted to neighbours and walked easily to all the local tourist areas. There is also a supermarket a very short walk away. The host is sooo lovely and provides great advice to help you plan your time in Kyoto and to make sure you have a great stay. Note that there is just a stove and small microwave, the grill cannot be used. The stairs are steep as they are in many Japanese apartments, and beware if you are tall, you are likely to hit your head more than once!
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olwyn (10/5): A perfect way to live like a local in Kyoto! - We truly enjoyed our time staying in this ryokan house. It was perfect in every detail and helped make our stay in Kyoto very comfortable. Having an in house washer was convenient. We love the quietness of the neighborhood and convenience to everything. It is located in the heart of the Higashiyama district. We would highly recommend this house for families or couples visiting in Kyoto who want to stay in a traditional Japanese setting. Having additional linens in the bathroom and a broom would be useful. j
- Heather (8/5): Very pleasant. - The garden was very attractive and it was good to be able to sit on the steps in the open air. I thought that extra towels could have been provided.
- Judith (10/5): History and beauty in the heart of Gion - This home was beautifully restored, maintaining older touches like the hand-hewn beams. Tatami floors, sliding washi screens added to the sense of history in Gion. The location is perfect - very quiet, but very close to the heart of Gion. We walked through Kennen-ji temple every day, a beautiful place that isn't crowded with tourists. Our host was very gracious and met us at the home to explain everything and give us the pass code. The house had everything we needed, and the garden and balcony were nice places to enjoy a quiet moment. We had absolutely no problems our entire stay. Highly recommend.
- Matthew (10/5): A wonderful machiya which will enhance your stay in Kyoto. - An immaculately presented machiya in a perfect location with all modern conveniences whilst maintaining a lovely atmosphere. Nothing
- Anwar (10/5): magical - excellent location, very friendly host, very organized and detailed support to our stay nothing
- Mark (10/5): Beautifully renovated traditional house in great location near Gion and walking distance to Kiyomisu -
- Louie (10/5): great stay, 10/10 - location, hospitality, perfect for couple of solo traveling. great culture and history behind the house. best sleep it’s not great for tall people, if you are above 5’10, you’ll bump your head a few times, especially going upstairs
- Yanina (10/5): amazing house, amazing host, amazing experience - This charming traditional Kyoto house was the perfect way to experience the real Kyoto lifestyle. Rieko was an amazing host, went the extra mile. house was comfortable and very clean. we truly enjoyed our stay.
- Kimchi (9/5): Our stay in Gion Kyuraku was excellent. The house is well located and well equipped. We loved the blankets(very comforta - The house is very well located, near of tourists spots and the old town.
Moreover, the blankets are so comfortable and we all like it. A bit humid inside but there is air conditioner, it is all fine.
- Edgy84 (7/5): Amazing stay with one caveat - The location is perfect. Kiyomizu-dera just a short walk up the hill, Gion round the corner. Hosts are lovely - very helpful and accommodating with requests that require Japanese speakers! Property is spotless with good air con/heating available. And washing facilities if needed. They even kindly gave me a birthday present! There is a caveat and whilst it is very obvious I feel it needs reinforcing. If you are somebody who needs home comforts, or flops after a day of sightseeing this is not a comfortable option. It is an amazing space and very well presented but it is sparse and functional! Stairs are very steep as well - just to consider for those with limited mobility. There's also nowhere to hang clothes.
- Phacharaphorn (10/5): Lovely stay in Kyoto - Rieko was extremely welcoming and the house was just lovely and conveniently located in town. We were in Kyoto for a friend's wedding and had to introduce a friend to the city during her first trip to Japan so getting to all the major temples easily made the trip easier. The house is traditional, but perfectly equipped with all modern facilities. It really made me feel like coming home to Japan :) We will definitely book this place again when we are back in Kyoto. The house is located on a small road without car access so instructing taxis to stop at the right place was a bit tricky and some getting used to. Otherwise, perfect for a 3+ days trip or longer stay.
- Kaiser (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing looking booking. Incredibly well priced for what you get, and your location. It was an incredible stay. Host was incredibly kind and accommodating.
- Jean (8/5): Very good - too small for six adults
- Kitty (10/5): Exceptional -
- Isabelle (10/5): home away from home - home away from home nothing
- Emmanuel (10/5): Gion Kyuraku is a beautifully restored machyia with all the modern comforts needed. The location is excellent, and it wa -
