Guest Reviews
- Alison (2/5): - Definitely our worst ever stay at an hotel. The room (Hermia) was ok but the mattress was beyond a joke. It was a cheap spongy thing with springs digging in which made sleep impossible. I was awake most of the night trying to get comfortable. My partner was in agony as her hip was in pain.
Also a cheap breakfast in the fridge which we left. And the curtains were thin letting in all the light.
- Rosemary (10/5): - From start to end of stay, the staff were excellent, knowlegable, respectful and always happy to be of assistance. The food was delicious, large portions and the beer was very good. Wonderful town to easily walk about. High social consciousness w several charities highlighted. Room was exactly as described, clean, spacious and the bed/pillows super comfy. Highly recommend.
- Geoffrey (8/5): - Nice room, friendly host (?), good location. Bit disappointed that breakfast turned out to be served in a paper bag in the room midweek, as I'd read some good reviews of the cooked breakfast. No food available in the pub on the Thursday night I was there
- Giuseppe (8/5): - Check-in was quick and effortless - the lady who checked us in was very nice, efficient, and extremely helpful. Our room was spacious, with a double bed and a single bed, and a very basic continental breakfast was provided in the morning.
The room itself could use a little refurbishment - the carpet was a bit tired, some fittings could do with updating or replacing, and the bathroom would benefit from a fresh coat of paint. However, these were only minor niggles and didn’t affect our stay at all.
Despite heavy rain overnight, the windows provided excellent soundproofing, which made for a comfortable night’s sleep. The location was fantastic - very central, with plenty of cafés nearby. The tea room next door served a great bacon sandwich, too!
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend The Shakespeare Inn.
- Baxter (8/5): - Conveniently located in the centre close to shops and restaurants.
Clean cosy room. Excellent attention by the management.
Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
- Ian (10/5): - Excellent
- Ben (8/5): One night stay - Great location for stay visiting Brewery Arts centre however bar was closed at 9pm .
- Coral (8/5): - The pub was centrally located in town. Personnel were super nice and helpful. The housekeeping staff was a little forgetful-no towels in the room when I checked in and no phone to contact the bar to assist. I had to call using my international roaming to reach them. Breakfast was continental in the mini fridge. It was replenished each day but they forgot to replace the tea bags. However on the whole it was a lovely stay.
- Mark (8/5): - Stayed for 1 night as a stop over on route to Scotland. Room was a little 1 bed cottage at the rear of the actual pub. Was extremely clean, comfortable and warm. Only downside was we were expecting a cooked breakfast as stated on their website but was told it was a continental breakfast in the fridge in the room, no food available at the pub itself so ventured into the town to eat and then returned to the Shakespeare for a drink only to find it was all shut up at 8.30pm.
If you are visiting Kendal there are many bars and restaurants but check out the Brewery Arts Centre which was a lovely place to eat
- Timothy (2/5): Downhill - Stayed here 8 years ago and things have gone downhill badly. The excellent breakfast had been replaced by a paper bag in the fridge and items were missing from 1 bag. Only one double socket on far side of room and one of those sockets was in use for the fridge. No parking any more finished a visit that will not be repeated.
- Gary (8/5): - I always like staying here in the past, I was disappointed that I could no longer park my car at the property which I only found out about the day before my stay so I had to make alternate arrangements, this will effect my decision on staying here in the future.
On the day of my stay or should I say the morning afterwards there was no one around to offer me a breakfast even while I was walking around the pub looking for someone to serve me, it turned out the only person I could find was cleaning the vacated rooms, so I just got my back and handed my key to the lady cleaning and left.
Went to a local restaurant instead!
Please note the pub and rooms are spot on, never a complaint but just look at the car parking and the morning service arrangements
- Brian (4/5): - Good location.
- Andrew (10/5): - Food excellent , Manager and staff very friendly and helpful . Great base to explore the Lake District.
- Ian (2/5): Computer says no. - For unexpected reasons I had to cancel my booking. I gave three days notice but as I was on holiday in Ireland without my computer I had no internet access. I phoned The Shakespeare out of courtesy and was told that there was nothing they could do and I would have to contact Hotels.com direct. I tried to cancel on the website but could find no way of doing so. I see this as a failure of both The Shakespeare and Hotels.com. I am sure the stay would have been excellent. Perhaps between both parties you could agree to transfer the booking to another date. I was really looking forward to the excellent food and drink on offer.
- ISRAEL (6/5): Do you recall Monty Python - Monty Python had a skit called the cheese shop. Analogous to this are the issues I ran into: 1 no coffee for breakfast (the machine is broken) 2 no vegan sausage (the supplier was changed. 3 no one working morning or evening could actually provide tourist information regarding trekking (1 person suggested I google the question).
- Darren (6/5): - Nice rooms Compact beds hard not much sleep due to noise TV on all nite loud nxt door
- Emma (10/5): Family stay 3 nights - It was brilliant,Lovely clean room, quiet and in a great area. The service was excellent in the pub and the breakfast was fantastic 👍
- John (6/5): - Room needed updating, it wouldn’t take much to vastly improve the feel. The bathroom floor was uneven and rippled, shower water pressure was poor and stopped working one morning. Other parts of the bathroom were tatty, ie the toilet roll holder was hanging off. Breakfast was passable average. Room carpet felt like it could do with a shampoo or replace. The staff were all friendly. Not sure how it gets 9/10, we stay at lots of places and this is a 5 or 6 at best.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Central location - Right in the middle of Kendal. Rooms are at the rear so very little noise.
Room was satisfactory, bed was big but on one side you sink into the mattress.
Food in the pub was nice, plenty of it and freshly cooked.
No vehicle parking is available, so you have to find a parking space in a local car park which isn't cheap overnight.
WiFi wasn't quite there being patchy and kept dropping out. Suspect that it was amount of people trying to access it.
- Dorothy (10/5): Enjoyable Stay At The Shakespeare. - Food was freshly cooked and delicious. Bed was very comfortable. Staff were friendly and efficient. We had an enjoyable and relaxing stay - we even stayed an extra night.
- Simon (8/5): A great find - Great location and handy for restaurants and the local pub ( which these are part of)
Clean and comfortable- it’s functional and it’s not trying to be high end etc! Great team and very pleasant and friendly. Breakfast was adequate. I would stay again when I’m up in Kendal
- Man Hon (10/5): - Historical building with great food
- Rebecca (6/5): - I did know before coming over that there was no parking in site but it did turn out to be a pain having to get on the car park down the road and at £12 per day it just adds to your stay cost.
Breakfast was nice just a bit greasy for me and toast came to the table cold and hard.
There was no food on for our stay which was inconvenient as I was staying with a child and we had hoped to just eat where we stayed. There are plenty of other places around though.
Staff was really friendly, offered to do the room on second morning and checked if we needed anything. Unfortunately the room had a very strange musty smell the whole time and was mouldy in places, the toilet roll felt damp even with having the fan on in the bathroom. It just wasn't a pleasant smell to have to put up with the whole time and made me feel sick!
- Ann (6/5): Needs some TLC - It is in a brilliant location, and the people who work there are amazing, but unfortunately it needs a lot of work doing on it especially the outside courtyard which is full of weeds and cigarette butts. The paint work is very worn. There was also no food available in the bar as the chef was off, breakfast was lovely though.
- Vivek (10/5): Kendal Whistle Stop Tour - Great stay. Good breakfast. Great Pie mash and gravy. Pints good too. Great spot in Kendal. Conveniently located
- Mehwish (8/5): - We stayed here for the night. Just
- Karen (6/5): Okay stay - Good size room, bedding clean and smelt nice.
Room tatty and in need of upgrade.
Bathroom very poor including loose toilet seat, grouting and shower in need of attention. Bathroom floor peeling up in doorway causing a trip hazard. Window stay in bathroom fell off when we opened the window.
On the plus side staff were lovely. Cooked breakfast a bit over cooked but tasty and good quality. Continental breakfast poor, not much selection.
Would have said all this when we handed the keys back at the end of our stay if we had the opportunity.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Shakespeare Hotel Kendal. - Notification from booking agency failed to specify one room should have been twin bedded. I got the impression it is family run but the owner was very accommodating in that very kindly he provided a spare room at no extra charge. Breakfast was included and was excellent. The hotel is old and quaint but very interesting. Parking is not available on site. The evening restaurant kitchen closes at 2000hrs and the bar closes 2100hrs but there are other restaurants and bars very nearby.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I arrived to find the property was having an IT issue so they couldn't check my booking on screen. That said the girl quickly gave me a key & showed me to the room, which wasn't in the main building but down the yard. The room was spacious & bright, and quiet too which is always good. The breakfast was fairly basic but pleasant enough. One problem with this venue is the lack of parking. There is parking at the Brewery Arts Centre but that's quite a walk if you have heavy bags, and you have to pay.
- Tony (6/5): - We arrived late morning on Monday hoping to get a meal at the Inn before checking in but, everywhere was locked up and no indication of when or whether they were going to open. We went back a couple of times, at 12:00 & 12:30, still no one there and no one answering the phone. We returned at 14:30 the door was then open and a member of staff told us that they were only open between 14:00 & 20:00 and that no food other than breakfast would be available on Monday & Tuesday; not the warm welcome we were promised on their website. The room was adequate although the shower tray didn’t drain quickly & was prone to overflow. Overall the property gave the impression of the owner being more interested in taking money out rather than investing in the business. Also we would recommend external signage and changes to the website to give information about opening times and food availability.
We will not be returning and will not recommend it to others.
- Ren (10/5): - My stay at the Shakespeare was short but will be remembered as a really good experience. I felt like a truly valued customer, everyone was so friendly and helpful.
The room was good and the bed was huge!! It was 2 lovely nights sleep, nice hot shower in the morning followed by a cooked breakfast. It really set me up for the day.
I would most certainly revisit and can recommend it for a good place to stay in Kendal.
- Joshua (10/5): - Great place to stay with friendly staff and nice rooms, the food was really nice and fairly cheap, located in the centre of town so can walk to most things
- Lynda (8/5): - We arrived after a long drive and found it a little tricky to find parking nearby. Receptionist was very pleasant and told us to go to the Brewery Arts car park but we missed the turn off for this and had to double round again. Please note this is a pay and display carpark
We chose to stay in a family room as it was bigger- beds were comfortable but bathroom flooring by door needs an upgrading.
Breakfast was between 8 and 9
Check out was at 10 am
- David (8/5): - There is no parking at this property and no chance of evening meal. The standard appears to have diminished.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Family room - In need of renovation. Old bathroom with damaged fittings and vinyl, worn carpet in bedroom. Not all beds have bedside shelf. Reading light too far away to turn off whilst lying in bed. In family room but only one chair.
- Vivienne (8/5): - It was a convenient stop over back to the South from the highlands. Very comfortable and clean and great breakfast.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Lovely little pub with very friendly staff. Accommodation was clean and breakfast was lovely.
- Andre (8/5): - Polite and accommodating staff.
- Gareth (8/5): Friendly staff and good location - A great location and looked after well by the staff. The room was spacious and comfortable and quiet at night so got a good nights sleep, located well for Kendal town centre and to use as a base for exploring the Lake District. Breakfast was tasty and filling too. Staff very friendly and welcoming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Gem - Modest, clean, quiet, and centrally located this was a gem for Mon and Tue night stay. The shower had great water pressure and very hot water, too. Highly recommend. Two notes: rooms are located near an outdoor seating area with about 10 tables. Imagine weekend crowd might be loud. We thought checkout was 11 but the cleaning service said it was 10. They were very patient as we did last minute shopping to be out by half past.
- Andrew (6/5): - The manager was great though leaving in a fortnight. Breakfast did not work for me as it is only between 8am and 9 am. Also no chef the night before so had to go elsewhere for dinner. Pub / Hotel needs and energy drive / boost otherwise it will close. Great city centre location rooms a bit dated and internet phone connection appalling.
- Richard (10/5): - Great location, very friendly and helpful staff, lovely breakfast.
- Brian (6/5): Superb Location - Superb breakfast served by extremely helpful staff. Bar and Breakfast area spotlessly clean.
Room was too small for the double bed - two singles pushed together which is not what I believed I had booked - continually stubbed my toes because there wasn't sufficient room to walk between the bed and the wall. Bed was extremely comfortable however.
Bathroom really was tiny and although clean, was not up to the standard of the public area of the Inn. Shower was hot and towels were spotless. But not enough room to swing a cat in the bathroom with the door intruding into toilet area.
That aside, given the location on the high street, with the Brewery Art Centre a couple of hundred metres away it would be extremely good value if these minor issues were addressed.
Would stay again however.
- Lesley (10/5): - Friendly staff, comfortable beds, cleanliness
- C (10/5): Great stay - Great hotel great staff great food! Great area!
- Paul (10/5): - Fabulous stay again! Looking forward to next one already!
Thanks!
- Anne (10/5): - Very convenient for town centre excellent hosts lovely breakfast
- Graham (8/5): - Surprised by how quiet this property was.
Clean and comfortable. Quite a small room.
Breakfast was nice.
- Stan (8/5): - Good central base for Kendal, our room was behind the pub off the main road on the ground floor. Car park for fee about 1 minute walk away from the property. Came with a cooked breakfast served by a lovely young lady.
- George (10/5): - great place, super friendly and perfect for town. brilliant value
- John (10/5): - Location was great right in the centre of kendal ..room was lovely and food was brilliant.
- GIOVANNI (10/5): - Place was lovely we only stayed one night but it was perfect for what we wanted. Just a few things that need to be fixed in the room we stayed in but nothing major. Great experience overall.
- Marcell (6/5): -
Safe and friendly area, easy to find location, I like that this place in linked to local history.
Room was very big enjoyed the hospitality in the bar area. Staff very friendly.
I did have one issue the room I stayed in,
The Lysander room was extremely cold at night and I did catch a chill which made me cut exploring time the next day.
However I did notice that was just above freezing temperature outside on the night I stayed
I would return to kendal but only in warmer months of the year. B and B total £71
- Mary (6/5): - Parking was very difficult and not onsite as advertised. Staff friendly and welcoming and complimentary breakfast was good. Rooms need updating and mattresses very uncomfortable and slightly worn. While my room was clean, my friends appeared not to have been vacuumed.
- Gareth (8/5): Ok stay - It was ok, however the shower wasnt great one min it would just trickle out then go boiling hot. There was alao no way of turning the heating off.
- Alan (4/5): - The cooked breakfast and vicinty to the shops and Brewery Arts Centre was great. We booked a Family Room as it was shown with a bath in the listings. There was no bath and the barman told us there hadn't been one since 2018. Also the room was cold when we entered, heating was off even though it was 1C outside. We received two free drinks in the bar but no mention of any refund. Disappointing.
- WILLIAM (10/5): Birthday present. - This accommodation was adequate for an overnight stay. We came to Kendal to see a group at a nearby venue. It was only a few minutes away, the parking charges were really good and everything was good.
Had a really good time and would definitely do it again.
- Steven (8/5): - Well located for Brewery Arts centre.
Basic but comfortable room.
Helpful & friendly staff.
Great breakfast.
- Obi (8/5): - Nice, friendly service. Comfortable clean room. Great breakfast in the morning. Love the history. Will definitely use again.
- John David (6/5): Good location but could do better - We booked The Shakespeare to attend an event at the nearby Brewery Arts Centre. No parking on site so you need to use nearby car parks. The rooms are in a courtyard behind the pub. Our room was clean enough, if a bit small and chilly (it was January). No particular issues with the service but they could have been more attentive. After the show, we decided to have a drink back at the Shakespeare but it had already closed at 22:10. If you stay at a pub you expect the bar to be open. Breakfast was freshly cooked but the choices were limited and instant coffee??
- SHARON (8/5): - Very clean and tidy room. Quite basic but excellent for 1 night stay. Hospitable staff, very helpful.
- Michael (10/5): - Great location.
- FIONA (6/5): - Arrived at hotel at 7.15 to discover food no longer being served but were recommended an alternative by the host. Breakfast was ok - a pot of tea rather than a cup with a teabag would have been preferable and it was instant or tasted like instant coffee.
- Dean (8/5): A pleasant stay - Pleasant stay at the Shakespeare. A warm welcome by Lee and shown up to our room. Nice large room ( we opted for the family room ). Nice breakfast in the morning. Staff were very nice too!!
- Antony (10/5): Great Stay. - Clean, comfortable and quiet. Great breakfast....Thouroughly recomend.
- mark (8/5): - .
- Jude (10/5): Worth a stay. Great breakfast - Lovely quirky happy clean venue with great staff
- Peter (8/5): - Friendly welcome
- Peter (10/5): - Parking is close by in a public car park that costs one pound fifty from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am next day.
- Lesley (8/5): - I liked everything. Friendly pub comfy bed very quaint and clean
- John (10/5): - Lovely little place, top quality for the money and the breakfast is fantastic, definitely stay again
- P (10/5): Fantastic stay at the Shakespeare Inn - We visited Kendal to see comedian Jason Byrne.
We stayed for one night with bed and breakfast, in the Shakespeare Inn and would 100% recommend it to anyone needing a comfortable, friendly, peaceful place to stay with a great location for shopping , restaurants, pubs. We were warmly greeted by the landlord who made us feel welcome. Even though we arrived about an hour early he said that wasn't a problem as the room was ready. The room was extremely clean, warm and comfortable with all the usual amenities. We dropped the bags off into our room and fancied a bite to eat so went back for food. The food was very very nice. That done we had a walk around Kendal town center with it's mix if ships, restaurants and bars. Later that night we went back for an evening meal. Again the food was very tasty, well presented and very very nice.
The bed was very comfortable and apart from some noise from one of the other rooms as they got up in the morning, it was a comfortable peaceful night's sleep. The breakfast was a full cooked breakfast of local produce and again, very nice.
If we ever visit Kendal again,The Shakespeare Inn is absolutely where we'll stay.
- Paul (10/5): - Ideally located, very pleasant room, easy access, breakfast included in rate and very friendly staff.
- Linda (8/5): - Room was Ok. Breakfast was good and staff was friendly.
- Tina (4/5): - The staff were excellent and attentive with checking in and serving a delicious cooked breakfast the next morning. The room had clean bedding and towels however the carpet was filthy and in poor condition. The decor was in poor condition requiring upgrades to the bathroom and single bed. The single bed was very uncomfortable due a type of button sticking into your back from the mattress.
- Phil (10/5): - Great location, comfortable bed and great breakfast
- Jill (10/5): 2 nights stay - Top top service. Great breakfast too. Dead happy with this pub stay.
- Donald (10/5): Nice room in centre of Kendal - Very pleasant room in the centre of Kendal. Clean with all the amenities you need in a room for an overnight stay. Freshly cooked breakfast. Staff friendly and helpful. Great value
- john (10/5): - Lovely cosy little room with an excellent breakfast
- Paula (10/5): - Lovely pub and very nice cottage room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great value. Superb breakfast.
- Joanne (8/5): - Great location in centre of kendal whilst we attended brewery Arts barely a minute walk away. Room was clean and the breakfast was included in the price and was tasty. Though the gap to get past the end of the bed was small, the bed was super king size and comfortable. Despite being in centre of town we were tucked away from any noise from the street. Shower tray filled quickly during our showers so perhaps drain blockage and the tray felt very springy underfoot, perhaps time to replace. Although the ad said parking was complimentary there isn't any parking anymore and we had to pay elsewhere. Luckily we got one of the last spaces at brewery Arts, but to stay for the evening and next morning cost us £6.
- James (10/5): - A nice place to stay, very handy for shops, caffe's restaurants, bus stop right outside of propery, hearty breakfast, and good Sunday roast, lovely friendly staff, very happy with our stay.
- Donald (10/5): Great for motorcyclists - Traveling thru UK on motorcycle and always look g for a place with walkability and good parking for my motorcycle. This fit the bill. Ate dinner at the pub and meal was very good.
- Linden (8/5): - The rooms are clean but small. Hard to get around the bed to the closet. It came with full English Breakfast which was a great value. Friendly staff, comfortable bed. No parking, though, so we had to hike to a car park every day as we took trips away from the city center, like Kendall Castle ruins.
- Chris (10/5): - Easy check in , clean good room , right in town
- David (8/5): - Nice place to stay handy for town centre. No parking
- Danna (10/5): - A great wee find. Centrally located and perfect for gigs at Brewery Arts (a 3 minute walk away). The rooms are at the back, so there is no noise disturbance at all. Staff were lovely and helpful but not overbearing. Rooms are spacious, and the bed was large and comfy. And breakfast was included; a lovely, freshly cooked breakfast, not a soggy breakfast which has been on a hot plate for 3 hours. I think this may become a regular spot for weekend gigs in Kendal. Thanks to everyone at The Shakespeare Inn.
- Susan (10/5): - Loved my stay, short and sweet as a stop off back from the Highlands, wonderful staff and oh what a yummy menu both for dinner and breakfast, thank you!
- Wendy (8/5): - Would stay again but they dont have their own carpark.
- Linden (10/5): - This is a cute place with friendly staff. It was easy to find. It’s well-located. The full or continental breakfast is included, which saves us time, money, and hassle.
- Joseph (8/5): - A large cozy room with nice breakfast and good service. Definitely will book Shakespeare Inn again when we visit Kendal in the future.
- Andrew (8/5): - Nice pub full of character, room a bit tired but clean and good size family room. Location perfect for us, right in the centre of kendal, staff friendly, great breakfast too! We would definitely come back to the Shakespeare.
- Christine (10/5): - Couldn't fault anything
- Neil (10/5): - Perfect in every way. The team at The Shakespeare are the best. The archway you need to drive through to the car park is tight, but the team were fab at navigating you in. All part of the charm.
- Helen (6/5): - Location was good, the car park was extremely difficult to navigate.
- CAROLE (8/5): Shakespeare Inn, Kendal - No complaints about the one night stay. Room was very clean with new fittings and the breakfast was good. Tight through the gateway to the courtyard parking but it was manageable enough in a Hyundai I20. Very peaceful at night due to the rooms in the courtyard being away from the main road. Would definitely stay here again if the Kendal area.
- Tazmin (10/5): - I had a lovely stay here, although rushed due to travelling !
The staff on check in was absolutely lovely, and provided me an ice bucket so i could safely store breast milk.
The accommodation was clean and quite large, i had a very comfortable stay there. I appreciated the outdoor access rather than staying IN the pub (if that makes sense!) . I came back around midnight, and the adjacent venue was not loud or rowdy, and i had a wonderful sleep.
Unfortunately i can’t comment on breakfast, as i had to leave before enjoying any! But i know there was a separate breakfast room to the pub.
thank you for a lovely stay!
- Laura (6/5): - I'm afraid our stay at The Shakespeare Inn wasn't very good. The room itself was fine, but the bathroom had some odd brownish substance on the threshold between the room and the bathroom that got trailed into each room if it was stepped in. It took until our second day to realize where that was coming from. The bathroom itself wasn't very clean and one of the towels had an odd substance on it.
The alley outside the rooms could be noisy and people out there would smoke, so we didn't want to open our windows, which didn't give the room a chance to air out.
The staff were friendly and helpful. We requested a clean towel which they gladly gave us, but didn't mention the brown goo until check out.
- joseph (2/5): - I booked this hotel for a birthday present for my father in law and his wife. But they found that the bed was very damp and checked out 2 hours after checking in. So never stayed the night. And as they are old school never complained or told the management about the problem.
- Eileen (10/5): - Lovely welcome
