Mark is a wonderful host who is passionate about running his B&B, making guests feel totally at home, offering terrific suggestions on places to see, and making a lovely breakfast. The little town is under a 1/2 mile walk so it’s very convenient to walk to dinner if you want to keep it simple. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Shady Rest is a period B&B, which is full of character and has a friendly welcoming host. There comes a point where period and quality cross over, I felt that Shady Rest is reaching that point. I found the bed in my room very soft and uncomfortable, which affected my nights sleep and stay. So for character 10/10, but for comfort, 4/10.
- Dennis (10/5): Relaxing accommodation in Takaka - I enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Shady Rest. Mark, the owner is very welcoming and friendly. He is helpful in providing a good deal of activities that can be found around the Takaka and Golden Bay areas. He provided me with a map of the Golden Bay area, and describe the many points of interest/activities to explore. The 100+ year old home has been nicely restored, and has modern comforts. The are numerous types of artwork throughout the property, and a wonderful common area in the back which has a bbq, plenty of shade, and a gorgeous wood table for guests to enjoy. The property is located on the main street through Takaka, and the main business area with restaurants, shops, and a Fresh Choice market is an easy 8-15 min. walk. The bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet at night. There are several nice areas of the home to relax, including an elevated front porch/balcony for reading or taking in the fine Tasman weather. The breakfast was nicely presented, and filling. A great fruit salad, cereal, eggs cooked to order with toast, and tea, coffee, and orange juice were offered. This is all served around a beautiful large wooden table in the dining room of the home, or outside in the common area if you prefer. I would not hesitate recommending a stay at this wonderful B&B.

Room was nice and bathroom was clean, but there were a lot of dead flies on the carpets. It seemed to be run as a B&B in the main house and then a hostel or something in an outhouse in the back and they cleaned the main house (there was a rota hanging on the fridge for chores). The main reason I wasn’t that impressed was because I hung two dresses out on a hanger (one worn and one brand new) and the brand new one mysteriously went missing when we were out one day...
