Guest Reviews
- Bernadette (1/5): - Nothing Everything
- garcia prados (1/5): DON’T STAY HERE - I didn't like it at all. The service was terrible, and the room was filthy. There were other people's hairs on the shower wall, the sheets were torn and stained, there were huge cobwebs on the walls, holes in the walls, and you could hear everything, even a homeless person sleeping in the hallway. We went down to complain, and they told us to change rooms. The one they gave us was even worse, with cigarette burns in the bedspread. They said they would talk to Booking.com, accept our complaint, and refund our money, but as soon as we left, they told Booking.com they weren't going to refund us anything. The solution they offered, besides changing rooms, was for us to leave the hotel at 11 p.m., on a street full of homeless people. Everything, it was an awefull experience, you can read all the details here: I didn't like it at all. The service was terrible, and the room was filthy. - Neil (5/5): I little more expensive than I remember, but got the job done. - It is walking distance to the convention center and a lot of places downtown. There are a couple of convenience stores near by too for pocking up staples. The Downtown Market a block away is a great spot that carries almost everything. A police station is just 3 blocks away.
Upgrading to a private bathroom wasn't to expensive. I stayed 8 noghts and it was only an extra $80 total for a private bathroom so an extra $10/night to not have to share a bathroom. The room was a bit dirty and the fire alarm was removed. While I had a wondow it was a view of the adjacent building with now way to the street, almost like the building next to it was built after and they squeezed it next to that building.
This was my second time staying here and the first time was better. They say there is breakfast, there isn't, the pictures are of only 1 nice room, most rooms look nothing like it. The first time was pretty quiet and easy to sleep, this time some of the other guests would blast music at like 2 in the morning making it hard to sleep. There are a lot of homeless people that stay around that area too so if you are gonna be out late, take ride share or walk in a group.
- Moises (1/5): - think I should get a full refund or I'm going to get a lawyer because the way I got treated at that hotel was horrible and I was harassed and then he was turning to threatening me to come into my room forcibly he tried to force himself into my room if you guys don't believe me just look at the cameras and I am going to get legal help for this this is bullshit and the cameras don't lie so so expect you guys to get back at me as soon as possiblel .

- Edward (1/5): horrible - We did not stay at this location and we are being charged by booking - booking.com should protect the consumer Homeless people in lobby and blocking door, gunshot holes in the wall, wet dog smell throughout hotel, clogged plumbing with standing dirty water other than tha it was awesome. .... get this hotel out of your inventory and give me my refund
- Arkydia (8/5): -
- Cyril (3/5): Never again! - if “crap” would have been an hotel, it could have been this one.
Don't trust the pictures ; trust the comments!
- Taylor (1/5): Horrific and it’s not even over yet. - Ummm… Wouldn’t know where to start.
- Marina (1/5): We did not stay the night. - Close to venue we were going to Everything was dirty. Our bed spread had holes and stains on it. Everything smelled like smoke and was dirty. Fridge was falling apart and the standing fan was dusty. Nothing was clean.

- collin (1/5): Ignoble - Rien Rien n’allait, les cracksheads venait dans l’hôtel , on a été réveillé par l’un d’eux qui frappait à la porte, endroit insalubre aucune sécurité Hotel à éviter au maximum
- Vardan (2/5): - Both hotel and expedia are terrible. I've been charged twice and hotel told me to contact expedia and expedia told me to contact hotel. After all expedia told me go and pay hotel directly and next morning I will get refunded from expedia. Next day expedia wrote me that it is non refundable and they kept my money. Avoid both expedia and this hotel as they both are terrible. 0 stars
- Bousaad (2/5): - Terrible
- sonny (4/5): - This place is in tenderloin and a lot of homeless hangs around right at front. While i survived, i realized i should have read the reviews. It’s a relatively inexpensive place. Next to Bart train so that’s why I got it. But the location and surrounding really sucks. The room smells and the bed has blood stains… get what you pay for… would not recommend.
- Ronald (2/5): Bay Hotel is a travesty and refuse to refund - I didn’t check in I was afraid I would get rob also there was homeless and vagrant drug users right in front of the hotel and in lobby I called hotels.com immediately the agent attempted to get my refund but the person at the Bay Hotel refused and also claimed there was no homeless or drug users in front of the property and said for the hotels.com agent to contact the manager at Bay Hotel the following morning I will load pics and video below and I’m also waiting for response from Hotels.com about this horrible situation
- Applejane (4/5): - The bed sheets had stain and the bathrooms are unclean. Not safe since the homeless are right outside
- Jessica (8/5): - Please please please give this place a chance! The family that owns this is absolutely amazing, and they do the best they can to keep the street outside clean and the guests comfortable. Knowing everything I know, I would stay here again, no doubt!
- Ian (2/5): - This place isn't for the faint of heart. The sidewalk right in front of the hotel is full of homeless people, and a lot of them were actively doing drugs whenever I walked by. When I first approached, one of the people on the street actively started insulting me and calling me slurs, which was scary because the front door of this hotel is normally locked so I had to wait to be let in.
The room itself was dire. We had a single window facing an interior space, which I thought would be nice to avoid the street noise, but it actually made the room unbearably hot even though it was *cold* outside. Running the provided fan didn't help. It also had a really heavy smoke smell for a smoke free room that actually made my eyes burn a little.
The bathroom seemed clean enough. The bed's sheets had a bunch of threads popping out and were thin, but there weren't bed bugs. The man at the front desk was nice. I did, however, end up getting a different hotel over by the Marina. I've done cheap hotels, but this was too much for me.
- Verified traveler (2/5): This place was my last option for the night don’t. - Honestly, the place felt unsafe and poorly run from the start. The front desk clerk told me their machine was “broken” and tried to get me to go grab cash from an ATM for the deposit. When I came back, he suddenly had “no rooms left” and didn’t even remember my situation clearly. To top it off, the cash deposit had magically gone up by $20. Total scammy vibes, not trustworthy at all.
- Edwin (4/5): - Didn’t have ac or breakfast and dirty towels
- Miguel (2/5): - Very bad experience ended up leaving the property terrible condition and didn’t feel safe
- Durtsche (7/5): Great stay - Not that exciting Service
- Christine (6/5): Downtown San francisco - Many homeless, drug users right aroubd the door of Hotel.
Breakfast advertised but none available.
Walking distance from Bart.
Cheap for downtown San Francisco.
- Duane (1/5): - The property was dirty, my room wasn’t cleaned prior to arrival nor while I was there.
Homeless on the doorstep all hours of the day & smelled like pee. No heat, AC or fans in rooms.
Property clearly has been neglected & needs basic upgrades & appears the owner doesn’t care about the property or those staying there.
- Jeff (2/5): - The photos of the hotel are not accurate. The rooms do not look like that at all. Absolutely filthy conditions in the room and in the bathroom. Beware they charge you a $20 deposit when you get there. When I went to check out early in the morning, no one was in the lobby And I had to leave. So I did not get my $20 back. The sidewalk outside of the hotel is packed with homeless people with trash, The and urine everywhere. Dirty bedding, holes in the walls, terrible odors throughout the entire building. Do not stay at this property!
- Jahangiryan (1/5): Everything there was really bad. The streets were full of drug addicts, everything was dirty. People eat and throw trash - I didn’t like anything there. The street was dirty, inside was dirty, the room was completely filthy, and there was a smell like dead rats. And I didn’t like anything at all. There just aren’t even words for it in Kazakh. Everything was really bad. There was no service at all. They don’t speak English — or barely do — but you still can’t understand anything. Overall, everything was really bad.
- balbue (1/5): Thought the hotel room was gonna be clean. - Nothing everything was terrible There is a lot of homeless near the entrance and they don’t have parking

- Jose (3/5): Disappointed - Nothing Not worth it for the price
- T. (4/5): Disappointing - Liked · Very friendly and helpful staff. Although centrally located, the neighborhood is kinda rough...but a "San Francisco rough", meaning there's a lot of poverty and person tragedies milling about, but mostly harmless. Disliked · It appears this establishment isn't a traditional hotel, as there seem to be semi-permanent residents. My room on the third floor had no real view—unless you're fascinated by the neighbor's sink and mirror (I wasn’t). The walls were paper-thin, and I could hear EVERYTHING...no further details necessary.
The remote for the 32-inch TV didn’t work, and I was given just two towels: one face towel and a larger hand towel—but nothing that resembled a proper bath towel.
The bathroom sink was clogged and never fixed. There were about six holes in the walls—one stuffed with tissue—which was unsettling. The microwave was missing its turntable plate, leaving only the roller ring. The fridge reminded me of the ones you'd find in a lab.
Most concerning: the smoke detector was missing entirely, with exposed wires dangling from the ceiling, bringing the total hole count to seven.
- Rivera (1/5): Bad -
- doreen (2/5): - Nothing
- Geary (6/5): - GOOD: Its 1.5 blocks off market. Central located to theaters, chinatown, shopping, Convenience markets, Clean y owners are a comodatinge...
BAD: Lots of homeless, addicts y dealers (sketchy neighborhood). When I was checking out there was noone around to check me out
- Jackie (2/5): - I booked 3 hotels on this site. The first 2 hotels looked like a good deal until we were told we had to share a bathroom with other hotel residents and were located in the worst part of the city. Transients were piled up in front of the property and up and down the street. I was afraid to get out of the car since most of them were arguing with themselves while mucus spewed from their noses and mouth. The advertisement did not include sharing a bathroom. Horrible is an understatement.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Terrible stay - This hotel is in an area known as ‘the pit’ where homeless-ness and crime is high(we were warned by the customs officer not to walk the streets after 8pm, not to walk near crowds and advised take Ubers door to door). With nowhere else to stay we checked in, side- stepping homeless on our way in. The reception manager was very welcoming and friendly and tried to assure us there was nothing to worry about. The rooms were basic (as expected) but they were grubby and furniture & walls damaged. Before we had even got our bearing the manager bought us a change of bedding and offered to have our room cleaned, without prompting! We went out and a homeless person barged their way in on our return. That night we didn’t get any sleep due to the very loud people staying - TVs blaring, shouting and not pleasant language (it sounded like homeless had been allowed in to stay). A fight broke out in one room, furniture smashed and the police called (we heard the conversations through the walls). We genuinely feared for our safety. Next morning there was no sign of the reception manager, no breakfast or even drinks (no kettle in the rooms only a microwave and fridge). So we booked another hotel and checked out, with no refund and my message to hotels.com has been ignored.
I do not recommend this hotel - I was skeptical of some of the reviews but all the negative comments are true. I will not be booking this hotel again.
- Michael (2/5): - My wife and i had to share one towel to shower with. There was no fitted sheet to cover the mattress protective cover. Just a loose sheet and a rhin comforter There was a hole in the wall stuffed with a trash bag to cover it.
- Shiraz (2/5): - Staying here was a terrible mistake. The staff were extremely rude, and the entire property was old and filthy. Our bed sheets had holes in them, and the room had a strong, unpleasant odor. The bed was uncomfortable and made constant noise, making it nearly impossible to sleep through the night.
The walls are extremely thin — you can clearly hear people taking showers, climbing the stairs, and even loud noises from the street throughout the night. The lack of sound insulation made the stay even more unpleasant.
To make matters worse, it took us almost 30 minutes to check out in the morning because the front desk was closed. After a long wait, someone finally emerged from a back room, clearly just waking up and still yawning — and this was at 9 a.m.
- Clovis (1/5): it’s a scam - Nothing Everything
- Michelle (1/5): Do Not Stay Here - Nothing Dirty. Stained towels and bedding. Smelt like smoke. Noisy. LOUD music and neighbors all night long. No hot water. All smoke detectors were ripped off the ceilings. Shower door did not close. Paid for 3 nights, left after one. No refund.
- sundaresh (2/5): This should not be on Hotels.com - The hotel itself is not a great location which is ok and for the price that would be ok, but the hotel and the room itself were no where compared to what was shown in the pictures. The manager was very receptive but looks like not a lot. Is under their control as they may have instructions from the owner to rent out rooms to fill the hotel.
The room I got did not have air conditioning, the walls were broken and patched up, the floor was not clean and sticky with dust on the floor. The bathroom was not completely clean, the shower area did not have any railings or counters to keep any toiletries. The towels given were bad and had steins on them. I requested for exchange and even the exchanged ones were not good. The room had a fridge that was half functional, a microwave that was smelling bad and a TV that did not work. It would have been ok if they did not have these, as opposed to having them at such conditions. Also, what was the minimum excepted that the rooms are neat. The cleaning was not done on a daily basis and when asked I was told that you have to pay tips if you wanted that. They cleaned my room once for a period of stay of 5 days and even after cleaning it was bad. (See the photos attached).
The worst part was people smoking weed from other rooms and people were so noisy in other rooms and my room start reeking of the weed smell on the last day. The manager and I went and asked people not to smoke and I was asked to keep my room open to let the smell go away 😳
- kollin (2/5): Never again - The room was absolutely disgusting and I really want a refund. The guy at the front desk literally told me that “the room isn’t disgusting, but you should lower your standards” there were stains all over the bed. And the floor was sticky, and most of the furniture was broken. Ended up just driving home because you couldn’t sleep there. Also check in was at 3 but was told we couldn’t go to the room until it was cleaned at 6pm
- Pooja (2/5): - The place was terrible. There was not a dustbin in the restroom. None of the amenities were working. No air condition, the breakfast they served was expired.
- Brooke (2/5): - It was so bad I didn’t stay the night - not at all as pictured, in a very unsafe area, smelled so so bad
- Ashneel (2/5): - ????
- Sriram (5/5): Passable -
- Terri (2/5): - The reviews are accurate. Seems to be family run. Male at the facility is incredibly rude. Walls are
So thin. The area surrounding the hotel is not
Great.
- Makayla (2/5): - this was horrible the bed had bugs and hair in it and it was a shared bathroom. also in such a sketch area and no parking
- Rivera (10/5): Exceptional -
- Celine (2/5): - In addition to being in a neighborhood that reflects deep American poverty, the word that would best define it is dirty. Everything is dirty, the room, the bathroom, the entrance staircase... When I arrived and was shown to my room, the smell of cigarettes and the smell of people who had previously occupied the room filled the room as soon as the door was opened. After seeing a second room, smelling of weed this time, I was offered a third without the smell of cigarettes or weed, but dirty... The manager had taken the time to take the toilet spray to perfume the room when I was waiting at the hotel entrance. The sheets, towels, table and sink were dirty (traces of mascara, pantyhose, etc.). As for the floor, it deserves a paragraph of its own (sticky enough to hold your best posters for the next decade). I was initially refused breakfast, even though it was included in the price, because “there are fewer people than last week”. I insisted and got a reheated coffee, probably from the week before. On the day of departure, I asked for my bag to be kept for the day, and was asked to pay $20. It was too much! I refused and expressed my dissatisfaction with the stay. He agreed to keep my bag free of charge on condition that I didn't write any negative comments, “that's up to you”, I was told.
As a result, this hotel fits in perfectly with its surroundings and the people who live there. Tourists, it is to be avoided absolutely, as is the neighborhood.
- Jenner (6/5): - its so loud i cant sleep properly
- Shawn (2/5): - I was harassed by a peeping Tom and there were dust mites and or bugs that irritated my skin.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Easily the Worst Hotel I've Ever Stayed at - Rough neighborhood. Screaming people outside and in the hallway made sleeping extremely difficult. I had multiple people try to come into my room in the middle of the night. Eventually, someone started banging on my door while jimmying the handle. I had to jam the chair infront of the doorhandle for an extra layer of security. Sheets were dirty, overall a layer of stickiness on everything in the room...it just felt grimy. I only stayed one night of my two night reservation because of how unsafe I felt. Owner refused to refund the 2nd night because I didnt tell him about the issue until after the fact, but it felt too unsafe to leave my room at the time it was happening.
- Luis (2/5): - This place its the worst place I’ve ever been.
This place nasty dirty noisy smells bad.
When I reserve it on the pictures were such lie
around the area tons of homeless people.
I don’t understand why they have to lie to people
to stay in this place. 😡
- Dane (2/5): Sad state of affairs - Someone from the hotel called me because they were closing at midnight and I had not checked in yet. They said they cancelled my reservation and hung up on me! I had to go find another hotel at 2am and pay a lot more. AND they didn't refund my money.
- Jose (2/5): - So dirty. There was a blanket with poop and pee on it in the shared bathrooms and it wasn’t cleaned the entire time we were there. They didn’t have extra towels and the towels they did give us were stained.
- Neil (2/5): - Limited response to get access. Very noisy and on the edge of homelessness
- Anthony (6/5): - Lots of challenges in the surrounding area Staff tries to keep up but its a battle Ive stayed here two times before could use a freshen up !!!!
- Raechel (1/5): All bad. Way jank. Buyer beware. - Nothing. They harassed me for a deposit after I already booked and tried to have me sign a contract to not hold them liable if I get my things robbed. Then tried to pimp me out for the pretend deposit that I never paid. 😂
- Felix (2/5): - Everything is dirty.
- Megan (5/5): Passable - The man at the desk was so helpful. He helped with directions when we were not sure where to park and gave us all info on parking and places to get good food and drinks. The area was real bad. It was full of homeless people and the parking was horrible. Not a good area to walk around in.
- Bronwyn (5/5): An uncomfortable stay - The staff were super friendly and accommodating. One staff member was kind enough bough to wait up for me until late at night due to flight issues. The room had all I needed. Unfortunately I had a terrible night 2 where due to central heating my room was way too hot, I tried to open the window and ended up having to listen to a couple having sex which was so loud it may as well been in my room so I had to close up the window again and blast the fan and then had the people upstairs stomp around until 2 am so loud not even my earphones helped. There was nothing I could do about anything that was making me uncomfortable. For the money I paid, I just don’t feel the stay matched the value.
- Isis (4/5): - Hotel property has not been properly taken care of. Old furniture, stained towels, old sheets. Like all SF the outside was surrounded by homeless people. Staff was nice and friendly.
- Monica (8/5): - For the area, the room was nice and clean but outside the property is the Tenderloin district.
- Zack (6/5): excellent for what you pay and really close to the subway and station and cable cars - towels had stains on them, room just needed a proper clean, especially the floor, very nice staff, however, notice says to ring bell 24 hours for attention, rang bell at 7am until 7.50 and no one came, only came when the breakfast bar opebed at 8am The heat in the room, we were gien a stand up fan, bur again it had so much dust attached to it = its a really nice place just needs more attention
- Vernon (8/5): Very good - Hotel was in a central location, close to transport facilities. Tidy room. Helpful staff Theres a few homeless people about. But that isn't the hotels fault
- Jeth (1/5): Bad -
- Jemma (2/5): - The lady on reception was lovely, unfortunately it’s the only good thing I can say about the place.
The location is terrible, so many homeless people in large groups outside made it feel very unsafe and I can’t even describe the smell. I had to get taxis straight from the door to where I needed to go, luckily it was only for one night.
I suspect the homeless are using this hotel as it’s so cheap. They are either partying or arguing in the corridor until at least 4am. It feels very unsafe, I didn’t sleep. The room itself came with dirty bedding, bath sheets and a horrible smell.
HONESTLY PLEASE pay the extra and go somewhere clean, safe and comfortable. I waited until it went quiet in the corridor and left as soon as I could in the early hours.
- Shavak (1/5): Bad -
- Cesar (5/5): Passable -
- Dukes (5/5): Passable -
- Angelina (2/5): - This property was surrounded around an area where it felt extremely unsafe. Most of the photos online are either ai generated or pulled from somewhere else because they are false advertisement.
- Susan (5/5): Not horrible - The manager seemed to look out for us, was helpful and nice Was charged an extra 125.00 when I checked in and was asked for a 20.00 deposit which I didn't get back, seemed shady! The area was scary with all the homeless and some of the guests.
- Angelita (9/5): Too bad the continental break starts too late for most business visitors 8am. People normally leave hotels arou 7-7:30am - The picture if the lobby is very accurate. They offered juice, free Wi-Fi, danishes and you can choose a room with private restrooms. San Francisco has changed a lot and the neighborhood is located at the core center of lots of crack heads and alcoholics peasants at all hours of the day. My room had. No view. Shower area could be cleaner and, since my room had no air conditioner, the fan should at least have been cleaned before my arrival date or during my stay, which it didn’t happen.
- Luis (9/5): Decent for the price and zone. - Close proximity to Market Street The homeless people outside the building
- Rocio (8/5): - The staff was friendly and helpful. He gave us great us suggestions of places near by to visit and eat. The continental breakfast was good it included several drink choices( coffee, milk, orange, cranberry and lemonade juice) and cereal or toast. They also provided a once use toothbrush and toothpaste. There's are homeless around that area and can be noisy.
- Cuzziol (6/5): Pleasant - Location Noisy, and no service room for cleaning
- Htvf (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angelita (9/5): I would stay here again in future business trips. - Great front desk customer service. Proximity to work location.
- Angelita (6/5): Fridge wouldn’t close well. Dusty fan. Bathroom not cleaned enough. No air conditioning in the room. No enough bedding i - The proximity to where I needed to be. Having to activate my room
Key everyday, making me go up and down the stairs multiple times.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Area around hotel is sketchy, but hotel itself and staff make up for it. Definitely will be making it my go to spot when visiting SF
- Brandi (10/5): Exceptional -
