Guest Reviews
- Stuart (10/5): Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break in the Lake District and we’ll definitely be returning.” - Had a fantastic stay at Wheelgate B&B in the Lake District. From the moment I arrived Stuart and Sandy made me fell incredibly welcome and nothing was to much trouble.
Breakfast each morning was excellent with plenty choice and high quality local ingredients. The location was perfect for exploring the lakes, nearby walks, and local pubs, while still being peaceful and and relaxing. Nothing.
- Julia (10/5): Fabulous weekend break in the lakes and met some lovely people - We were made to feel so welcome upon arrival. Our room was very spacious and spotless. Plenty of tea and coffee available in our room. Breakfast was freshly cooked and served with a smile and chat. Location was perfect for our trip to watch Bluebird on Coniston. There was nothing to fault about our stay it was perfect.
- patrick (8/5): Lovely couple of days - Lovely spot and clean Good location
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Great Location for Coniston, 2 mile walk along the Lakeshore. Wilson Arms 20min walk along a path, for evening meal drinks etc. Stuart and Sandy friendly and helpful.
- John (10/5): Really friendly and welcoming hosts who really made us feel at home:-) - Really nice and relaxed stay; we were made to feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble:-) Nothing

- Milena (9/5): Relaxing stay with easy access to walking trails and friendly hosts. - Property was easy to access and had a parking space for us. It’s a beautiful cottage with a lovely garden with a sweet scented wisteria growing right outside our windows. The hosts were welcoming and friendly, happy to help with advice or directions and introduced us to their stunning, gentle and clever dogs - unexpected and most welcomed highlight of our stay. We really enjoyed chatting to Sandy and Stuart and their breakfasts set us up well for our walks. The property was all we needed and more, we had no issues. It’s an old house, full of character and charm but perhaps not for guests looking for a luxurious stay. We loved it and slept well in the comfortable beds with good quality bedding.

- Gary (9/5): - Location was good, room was big and the facilities are excellent
- Dario (10/5): Wonderful hosts, Its been a while since I felt in such a familiar environment in an accomodation! Everyone there swemed - very comfortable and cosy room! Nothing to point out.
- Isobel (9/5): - Great location very comfortable and warm Very difficult to find needs a sign outside. No bin bags no scissors needs an airfryer. Duvet could be bigger.
- cameron (10/5): a breath of fresh air - welcoming and hospitable to what i needed to do which was walking. possibly advice about local resturaunts pubs walks etc.
- Daniel (10/5): - Hideaway was very convenient- close to surrounding hikes, felt cozy, nice rural location.
- Ken (6/5): -
- Emma (10/5): - Lovey location set back from the road easy to get to most places by car

- James (8/5): Pleasant weekend away. - Good location, parking and general comfort. Noisy boiler at 6am louder than an alarm clock is disruptive. Kitchen is cramped and lacking in some basic kitchenware Noisy boiler at 6am louder than an alarm clock is disruptive. Kitchen is cramped and lacking in some basic kitchenware.
- Judy (8/5): We loved the self-catering unit. Good value and private - n/a Reversing out off parking at the byre was tight. There was no room to turn around and exit forwards and our case was compact.
Weather was very stormy and the roads were flooded.
- David (10/5): - It was the ideal location for a stunning walk up Coniston Old Man in perfect weather in the Saturday. The Hideaway was a lovely and comfortable place to stay, with everything needed for a weekend away from it all.
- James (9/5): Fantastic little hideaway - The property was immaculate with well equipped kitchen, extremely comfortable bed and lounge furniture.
The owners had made a great effort to send clear directions on how to enter the property from the road which was very welcome. On arrival property was very cold as heating was set at 13C.
Managed to raise it by guesswork as no instructions as to how to set it. Thankfully all warm within 30 minutes or so.
- Ali (9/5): -
- Sheila (9/5): -
- Amie (8/5): - Lovely and welcoming. Great location.
- ilona rigo (10/5): Great, great, great! - Great location for ticking off some wainwrights, visiting coniston and lots of other adventures! I stayed in the cosy hideaway, up round the back - disappointed no sheep peered through the little window 😆 lovely cooked breakfast by Stewart - variations to suit each guest, cereals, yogurt etc, served by Sandy along with tea\coffee and chat. 8.30am guests find a seat, all friendly and a nice start to the day rain or shine! Lovely dogs and their cat, two who appear in the amazing book about her real life reading dog 'Google' by sandy ❤️ Parking spaces a bit tight when the guests don't use the white guides!
- Pavel (9/5): -
- Anne (10/5): - Everything
- Emma (10/5): - Very cozy N/a
- xx (10/5): Superb - Nice clean and tidy room, comfortable bed, products for shower and all the body lotion they have there is so rich and feels great on the body. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend to everyone.
- Philip (9/5): - Stuart and Sandy were very welcoming and informative
- Widdop (9/5): -
- lorraine (10/5): Absolute gem hidden in the lake district - We got the 4 poster bedroom, it was so nice comfortable, quiet, really clean with lots of little touches that made our stay more special There was nothing we didn't like
- Brunelle (10/5): - Tout. L’endroit est très beau, très confortable, le petit déjeuner délicieux et la gentillesse des propriétaires.
- Anne (9/5): -
- Johan (9/5): Nice b&b off the beaten track - Stuart & Sandy are very friendly hosts sprinkling humour around. The cottage has all amenities that you need to stay and cook for a longer period of time (you need to bring your own seasonings and cooking oil, but this was expected).
It is an English style breakfast, but Stuart offered a lot of variation ranging from full English to smoked salmon with eggs. We liked it a lot.
The location is less touristic than other parts of the Lake District but you can have some nice walks, e.g. a circular one to the lake. Sandy pointed us to a great 40 minute walk from the B&B to the Banishead Quarry which offers a spectacular view of the Old man of Coniston (from there you can also get on the main walking routes to the top): highly recommended.
In a short driving distance you will find nice walks: Tarn Hows (Tom Ghyll Waterfalls, Tarn Hows view point, side tracks), Elterwater (pretty and popular starting point) to Loughrigg Fell (very nice views) & Loughrigg Tarn, Elterwater to Cathedral Cave (spectacular), walk to Stock Ghyll force waterfall in Ambleside.
If you are into Beatrice Potter, you can visit Hill Top, enjoy the lake view at Claife Viewing Station and take the ferry to Windermere.
- Peter (10/5): - Warm welcoming staff, nice peaceful place with delicious breakfast served. Nothing comes into my mind.
- Lauren (9/5): Great location, great hosts, comfiest beds! - The property was in an excellent location, Stuart and sandy were great hosts and the bed was the comfiest we have slept in ever!
- Elaine (9/5): A fantastic stay in the beautiful Lake District in a gorgeous period cottage with attentive hosts. - Stuart gave us a really warm welcome on arrival which was wonderful as it had been an awful journey. Both he and Sandy were excellent hosts which added the enjoyment of our week. There was an excellent choice for breakfast although my husband thought the portions were a little on the small side.
Our room was clean and there was plenty of storage. The walk-in shower was good.
Beautiful location with Old Man Coniston, Lake Coniston and Coniston itself just minutes away.
Will certainly stay again. If we booked again we would not book the Buttermere room as it has a four poster bed.
There was sufficient parking if everyone parked within the lines. It was very tight on a couple of evenings when we returned.
- Anthony (9/5): We did enjoy our stay . Nothing bad enough to complain about to complain - I liked the traditional style, the hosts were good. Breakfast was great , Could do with a freshening up. Carpets cleaned or replacing etc
- Jess (6/5): -
- Sam (9/5): Great nice cozy homely place that is perfect for a short getaway. - The accommodation was nice and quiet and easy to find, just what we needed. The hosts were great and friendly, couldn't have asked for better if you are running away from the hustle and bustle of life. The room was clean and well presented. The breakfast served was very good with individual requirements (e.g vegetarian and soya) catered for. The location could be perfect if it was not right on the road but the traffic from the road could be be heard in the rooms which was great. This could not take away the overall experience we had.
- Jessie (10/5): A warm and welcoming stay that felt like home — especially thanks to the dogs! - The hosts, Stewart and Sandy, were absolutely lovely — so welcoming and thoughtful. The bathroom had been recently refurbished, breakfast was great, and meeting their four sweet dogs was the absolute highlight! Nothing at all — I genuinely had a wonderful stay.
- Linda (8/5): - The area was lovely as was the accommodation N/A
- CM (10/5): 4 brilliant nights at Wheelgate. - Host were wonderful, room great, food good. All in all a thoroughly relaxed stay. Watch out for the low beams if you're tall !!!!!!!!!
- Cheryl (10/5): Perfect stay for a short visit - Location and warm welcome. Beautiful cottage
- Yvonne (10/5): Highly recommend. Clean, comfortable, beautiful, great location - Beautiful setting, comfortable accommodation. Very clean. Lovely Breakfast. Accommodating hosts. Track to The Old Man of Coniston behind the Guest House. Nice and peaceful yet only 5 min drive into Coniston with all amenities. N/A

- Hayley (9/5): -
- Mohammed (9/5): - All I need to say is that I would certainly recommend Wheelgate to friends and family and if we were to visit the area again the Wheelgate is where we’d stay.
- Louise (9/5): - Stuart was extremely helpful and friendly, we received a warm welcome. The cottage was cosy and clean. Great location for hiking. We were happy to have a free parking spot during our stay but felt it was too small for 2 cars, we shared with a neighbour. Their car was a big estate car parked so close to ours. We had difficulty getting into our car and reversing out of the gate took about 20 manoeuvres. So worried we were going to hit their car and the wall.
- Duveen (10/5): -
- Guy (9/5): - The area was perfect
- Kelly-Ann (10/5): -
- Maggeltje (10/5): Lovely location, great place to stay. - Lovely location, great walks right from the doorstep. I stayed in the Hideout cottage which is beautiful and comfortable. Great breakfast. Everything was great

- Paul (10/5): Great location fab hosts - Breakfast was top notch! Hosts were lovely! Will defo be back! Nothing!
- Adam (8/5): Beautiful location and B&B, comfortable rooms. Would definitely recommend. - Lovely room and beautiful, beautiful view. Owners were very accommodating. Room was comfortable and amenities brilliant - nice tea, coffee, cookies and water, TV with freeview, good WiFi. Breakfast was nice. Great location for exploring Coniston, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Windermere. Would definitely recommend. For awareness, be careful pulling in and out of car park, cars drive past unexpectedly quickly. Some of the seals in the bathroom could do with a refresh.
- Ali (10/5): -
- Justin (10/5): -
- Andrea (10/5): Great spot for walkers! - Location is great for walkers like myself, loads of beautiful local walking routes. I loved meeting their 4 gorgeous retrievers and talking to Sandy about all things dog! Breakfasts were delicious and always served so quickly! Highly recommend! Nothing!
- Georgina (9/5): Love couple, love clean room and space, love break away. - The property was clean and homey. Just they have 4 dogs which I didn’t mind but incase you are or have an allergy.
- Hamblin (9/5): -
- Howarth (10/5): - The location is brilliant nice and peaceful but near Coniston, Stewart and Sandy where the best , extremely helpful and made you feel very welcome we will definitely be back Nothing
- Ged (8/5): -

- Pavol (10/5): Great stay in lovely cottage - Solo Traveler on Motorcycle. I had single room. Very comfy and clean, plenty of storage, coffee/tea and mini fridge. Good working shower. Off-road parking. Fantastic family of dogs and cat.
Owners very friendly always happy to help. Nothing
- Jevgenij (8/5): - Nice place to stay.
- Jon Cellier (9/5): Lovely spot to stay near the Chill Swim in Coniston - Great location a few minutes drive from Coniston town and of course the lake.
Stuart is great host with a great sense of humour and he's very caring.
The fact the place is dog friendly, with an enclosed patch guests' dogs can use was just marvelous! It's all nice and lovely, everything - from shower to electricals - work perfectly although the place could do with a little refresh. Nothing that is detrimental to a relaxing stay.
- Glenn (9/5): -
- Christopher (9/5): Comfortable and friendly stay in a great location - We stayed in the little Byre which had plenty of space for our three day stay. Excellent breakfast cooked to your order. Helpful and friendly hosts. Parking on site. Good location for exploring the district.
- Victoria (9/5): -
- Michael (9/5): Great homely feel with friendly hosts. Fortunately to get a great deal. Will look for availability a - Solo traveller hiking the Langdales and Scafell. Location ideal.
Great host, with local knowledge and always available for advice.
Room was cottage feel, with plenty of storage and comfort with single bed and chair. Desk and small tv.
Remodernised bathroom gave it a luxurious feel especially after a long day in the mountains Nothing.
- Lynne (8/5): - The cottage was very attractive, & in a good location. Hosts were very pleasant, and breakfast was good. Whilst I love animals, in particular dogs, I do feel that the website should advise visitors before booking that the owners have 4 dogs & a cat, as some people are allergic. I was asked on arrival if I had a problem with dogs (which I haven't), but that was a little late in the day to be asking the question!
- Andrew (10/5): 10/10 - Beautiful accomodation cottages, gardens and main building surrounded by lovely countryside. Close to quaint village pubs etc.
A short drive to more major lakes. All excellent!
- Guy (9/5): -
- Stuart (10/5): One word SUPERB. - This has got to be the prettiest B&B I have stayed at in the Lake District. This was my third stay here 2019, 2021 and this years d I hope again next year. Nothing.
- Chris (10/5): -
- Carl (9/5): -
- Jon (10/5): Fabulous property away from the crowds - Fabulous property close to Coniston in the quieter part of the Lakes. I stayed in the Hideaway, a wonderful building tucked away at the back of the property, modernised to a high standard. Excellent breakfasts and easy access to all parts of the Lakes. I stayed for 6 nights, and the room could have done with servicing half way through my stay. Not an issue if you are there for only for a few nights as most of the other guests were.
- Tracy (10/5): - Lovely cosy b&b ideal location for hiking old man of coniston Nothing all good !
- Debra (8/5): -
- Deb (10/5): - Fabulous Cottage well equipped clean and cosy. Delicious breakfast...loved the dogs and Thomas the cat ...very friendly and welcoming hosts . Thanks Sandy and Stuart from the Convicts !!
