Guest Reviews
- Romaine (9/5): -
- Karen (8/5): Very comfortable boutique hotel - The room was excellent. The bed was king size and supremely comfortable. The shower was wonderful and the towels were a good size and soft. When I asked for a kettle (I don't get on with coffee makers) I was given one. Breakfast was good, as was dinner. My room was not serviced after the second day. Only poached eggs were offered at breakfast, not any other type of egg. The wines at dinner were very expensive
- Mary (7/5): - The staff, especially Amy, were exceptional. Good value for Oxford. Excellent breakfasts.
- Anthony (8/5): Very friendly staff - Just very difficult to find it from the station with all the road works and road closures.
- Lisa (9/5): Lovely place to stay and explore Oxford, definitely recommend staying here. - Clean and comfortable the room temperature was perfect and it was a large room and very quiet at night. Quirky old property which could be tricky if you have poor balance or aren’t good with stairs. Fabulous food, both evening meal and exceptional breakfast. Staff are lovely, couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. Easy walking distance from the station and into the city. Definitely recommend staying here. Could perhaps do with a freshen up on the stairs, but that’s being picky! No parking, but we were aware of that and came by train which was perfect for us.
So really there was nothing not to like!
- Johnny (10/5): An excellent place to stay for work travel - This premise provides a spacious, beautiful, clean and comfortable room for us! It is located within a 5-min walk from the train station, which is very close to most attractions in the city. The restaurant offers excellent steaks and a very good breakfast. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this place. Nothing I could think of.
- Renate (8/5): - zentrale lage und doch ruhig, sehr gutes steak restaurant
- Hélène (8/5): Un sejour agréable . Je recommande - Le restaurant était délicieux
- Philip (9/5): The room was comfortable and the evening meal was great - The staff and the steaks Nothing
- Jakub (10/5): - Skvělý pokoj, jak z filmu. Skvělá snídaně. A dobrá poloha. Většinou do 20 minut, ty bližší College i 15.
- Lucy (8/5): Ideally placed for flying overnight visit to Oxford. - Location was ideal for our needs. Parking at Park & Ride for 24hrs cost only £4.70 and property was an easy 15 minute walk away or you could get the bus. Short walk from railway station and 15 minute walk into centre. Room was spacious and had a good shower. Breakfast was ok though would prefer chopped fresh fruit available and fresh juice Coffee machine in room combined as kettle for making tea. Much prefer a separate kettle as water boils properly and is not contaminated with coffee smell.
- Joan (10/5): The hotel was fantastic as was the breakfast. And Amy was so friendly and went out of her way to show us to our room - The bed was so comfortable A little bit away with the bridge construction but not that far away.
- Adam (8/5): -
- Elizabeth Osthimer (10/5): -
- Anne (8/5): - The staff were brilliant. Very friendly and helpful. Our room was a bit noisy onto the street and the bed was a bit small.
It was expensive because Oxford was very busy so room rates had shot up due to a large conference nearby
- Kristin Jung (10/5): -
- Celia (10/5): -
- Peter (7/5): Overall, an enjoyable experience. - Comfortable stay, friendly staff and a very good location. A kettle in the room would have been an advantage as the coffee machine was a poor substitute ( as well as very confusing to operate). The TV could have been bigger and a second chair would have been useful.
- Charlotte (9/5): Wonderful and comfortable stay, great breakfast - Very comfortable
Good facilities
Amazing breakfast
Location - quiet st Shampoo provided could be improved!
- Sue (7/5): Quiet and convenient for railway station - Quiet location, close to station. Room was bright and spacious. Bathroom was modern. Staff were friendly and helpful. Coffee machine didn’t work (but we were quickly brought a kettle instead).
- Paul (8/5): -
- William (8/5): Staff luvly and helpful - Central position
Comfy clean bed Found the decor oppressive too dark
Hated the coffee machine a kettle would have been nice
Very disappointed with the menu at least one fish dish would have allowed us to eat in the restaurant
- Avril (8/5): - Breakfast was very good, we all had The Porterhouse Grill, our rooms were large, clean and comfortable and a great location to city centre.
- Georgia (9/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): - Close to railway and bus station. Easy walk to centre of town. Close to canal walks. Staff friendly, helpful, professional. Excellent breakfast provided.
- Kevin (10/5): If you’re looking for a hotel with character, a great location, and outstanding dining experience, this should be your O - The location to the heart of Oxford was excellent! The rooms were quaint and full of character! The steak dinner was outstanding. One of the best steaks we’ve ever had! We’ve traveled across the world many times and we’ve only had one other steak that rivaled it. There was no air conditioner, but they did have a nice Dyson fan.
- Reinhard (6/5): - Gutes Frühstück Kein Parkplatz am Hotel
- christina (10/5): Beautiful place food amazing. Will definitely return - Amazing rooms spacious and clean. Beautiful furniture. Breakfast amazing 🤩
- GOYER (10/5): -
- Clavera (10/5): - Hotel original et bien placé. Personnel super sympa !
- Bryony and Andy (10/5): - Really lovely staff, clean and comfortable room. Some better pillows would be appreciated
- Sarah (10/5): -
- Diane (10/5): Exceeded expectations ! - Very clean and quiet. Great breakfast. Reasonably close to everything .
- Pitsiqui Carvalho (8/5): -
- Caleb (9/5): -
- Thanh (10/5): Great pub with rooms - Lovely room, nice shower (broken top shower but not a deal breaker) comfortable pillows, great location near train station, tasty breakfast, really friendly helpful team - thank you - we had a great time.
- Leah (10/5): It was lovely, lovely room sbd great service - The style snd food Maybe some areas need absolutely repairs
- Shoaib (9/5): A convenient and comfortable stay in a great location, with an excellent breakfast! - I stayed at the Porterhouse Grill and Rooms while travelling alone for a conference in Oxford, and the location honestly could not have been better. The moment you leave the train station it is literally just a couple of minutes away to the southeast, which was perfect for me since I had to catch early morning trains. Super convenient and very easy to find.
I had the top room on the upper floor, and it was really spacious with a very comfortable bed and great views. I really liked the feel of the place. It was simple, clean, and very comfortable, which is exactly what I needed for a short stay.
One of the highlights was definitely the breakfast. The options were superb. I went for the vegetarian breakfast and really enjoyed it. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. I remember struggling a bit with the coffee machine and one of the staff members kindly came over and showed me how to use it, which I appreciated. There were just a few small issues with the facilities. The room itself was spacious and comfortable, but the instructions for the coffee machine were not very clear, so it took me a bit of time to figure it out. Fortunately, a member of staff kindly helped me, though clearer instructions would definitely help future guests.
The TV was also quite small, which stood out because the room itself was so large. A bigger screen would make the space feel a bit more balanced.
There were also a couple of minor maintenance issues in the bathroom. The resistance strip on the door kept coming off, which made it feel like the bathroom might need a bit of upkeep.
At night, I occasionally heard what sounded like cleaning noises, either from above the room or possibly from outside near the window. It was a little unclear where the sound was coming from, and it made sleeping slightly difficult at times. It might simply have been a windy night, but it was noticeable.
Aside from these points, I still had a very pleasant stay.
- Ben (10/5): Brilliant spot lovely staff and well looked after great shower and comfy bed and lovely breakfast what more do you want - The staff were fantastic and haven’t had a steak for breaka beofre really lovely and accommodating and on a quite street Not much
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Johnson (10/5): -
- Giles (10/5): All over too soon. - I was made to feel very welcome as soon as I arrived and then for the following three days.
The ambience of the restaurant, the comfortable room and then to the best breakfast ever is to be commended. Nothing
- Sarah (9/5): -
- Chinwendu (10/5): Wonderful! - Wonderful location, great food and peaceful room. Nothing. I have to come back.
- Roslyn (10/5): Just what we needed, a comfortable warm room, great shower, fantastic breakfast, close to that stati - Our room was lovely. Fridge on the landing if we needed it. Shower lovely and hot. Bedding soft and comfortable. The breakfast was stunning - I had steak for breakfast!!! It was perfection. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful and made beautiful coffee. The stair carpet on the way to our room has seen better days and didn't inspire confidence...our room was lovely though so all was well. Not the Porterhouse's fault but it is surrounded by roadworks and it is a long way around to walk from the station obviously way beyond their control.
- Jessica (9/5): Would stay again- excellent food, staff and a lovely environment - It is well maintained and a lovely environment - staff were really good and the food is amazing Difficult to control room temp, but there are fans and radiators etc.
It was a bit out of main centre and there was a road closed which made getting rides into town expensive
- dawn (6/5): over priced for the room facilities - the room was a good size and breakfast was good no mirror in the room so trying to dry my hair i couldn't see what i was doing, the shower top arm was spurting hot water out as it had come away, although breakfast was good the morning staff were very late to arrive so the cleaner was trying to organize orders and drinks hats off to her but staff should arrive on time not an hour late . We were also woken at 7am with the most horrendous construction noise which we do realise you have no control over but 7am on a Sunday morning was not what we expected
- Tamara (10/5): excellent accommodation highly recommend - excellent facilities to a very high standard, very friendly helpful staff nil
- Nichola (10/5): Loved it, will definitely be back and would highly recommend - Cosy room, an abundance of tea/coffee pods, biscuits, toiletries. It has lots of character such as a beautiful old fireplace in the room. The restaurant is lovely and breakfast was delicious. It was exceptionally clean too. I admit, I had my reservations about staying in a pub/restaurant,especially as a solo female traveller, but it's not that kind of vibe at all, it's lovely. The restaurant was quite busy in the evening but a nice crowd and a nice ambiance. The room was very quiet once I went upstairs. N/A
- Corinne (10/5): - This was absolutely exceptional. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous room. And warm, cosy, quiet. Downstairs the pub / restaurant is stunning for a late night drink (dinner must be sumptuous, I'll try next time!). And what an English breakfast in the morning! This place is a real diamond.Thank you!!! Nothing. I loved everything ❤
- Anastasia (10/5): -
- Andy (9/5): - Breakfast was excellent. Not much sound proofing between floors, can hear a lot of footsteps. I would bring ear plugs next time. But everything else was great, thanks!
- Caroline (10/5): -
- James (5/5): - Nicely decorated. Good lighting. Comfortable room. Coffee machine didn't work. Was told they'd bring a kettle. They didn't. Asked again, told they'd bring it up. Still didn't. Breakfast only begins at 8am so had to check out without food as had early train.
- Cynthia (10/5): Charming experience - This is sort of an upscale pub, with beautiful décor and rooms up a narrow set of stairs. Our room was in the charming attic, with those little square windows and nice blue marine walls. Breakfast is delicious, particularly the option from the grill. We also had dinner at the restaurant -- you should taste the cauliflower. Bathroom is simple and practical. It is just behind Oxford's train station. Nothing.
- Tina (9/5): -
- Sally (10/5): Comfy, central, great breakfast, friendly staff. - Staying at a pub/steakhouse, just down the stairs to the restaurant/bar. Comfy bed large room, lovely staff. Easy access to train station and town centre. All great - n/a
- Abbie (10/5): - Breakfast was great
- Jake (10/5): We had a lovely experience! - The location was great, within 12 minutes walking distance into the centre. The rooms were nice and spacious and quiet at night. Great amenities.
The Staff were polite and helpful.
Breakfast was delicious!
And even the parking at the nearest hotel was a 1 minute walk. Nothing
- Massimo (9/5): - Great boutique hotel… staff is excellent and location is perfect All good
- Aillie (6/5): Enjoyable but! - Hand for the railway station and central enough to walk around Oxford without having to use transport I did not realise the pub was really a restauranty so there was nowhere to lounge other than sitting on your bed in your room. We were there with other family members for a pre christmas catch up, even though were were buying drinks at the bar there wad no where to sit an chat until they had finish serving meals. Not there fault but if you are expecting to sit and have a drink after a busy day sight seeing you have go to your room.
- Ariel (9/5): To return - The staff
The internet and the cleanest
The great a la cart breakfast It’s close to the train station but it’s under construction
- Jan Mc (9/5): Excellent value for money: a stylish room, fantastic food and super-friendly staff. - The location is brilliant for train travellers - just 5 mins walk from the station. Our room was large and tastefully decorated, with a really comfortable bed and excellent shower. The restaurant is fantastic, with a range of cuts available for steaks and a delicious assortment of sides. We couldn't fault the food or the service, especially the great conversation and local recommendations from the very witty Nicola. The breakfast was equally impressive. I couldn't manage steak again but my husband wolfed his. All in all, fantastic value for money. The restaurant was very quiet so by the time we were onto our mains we were the only table in there, which was a shame as I'd brought my husband for his birthday and would've preferred more of an atmosphere. Nobody's fault, just the luck of the draw during an otherwise busy Christmas period.
- J (9/5): - A real gem of a place to stay within walking distance of the city centre. I chose Porterhouse as we needed somewhere to stay after a trip to the theatre. We had a cosy room with character which had good facilities. Attentive and friendly staff were on hand to help. The restaurant was excellent for our evening meal and we had the best cooked breakfast we've ever had - it included steak! I was even offered a lemon and honey tea as I'd lost my voice. Would thoroughly recommend Port house. Nothing
- Shiri (9/5): Nice stuff, good clean room and facilities, close to center and good steak house -
- Štěpán (10/5): - Friendly and welcoming staff, a cosy and spacious room, and a delicious breakfast. A nice touch was fresh fruit available for guests throughout the day.
- de schutter (8/5): -
- Meike (8/5): -
- Patsy (9/5): Lovely homely stay ,friendly staff very helpful and a lovely relaxing breakfast - I love the location ,it’s cozy comfortable warm Nothing
- Norm (9/5): A warm and friendly place for exploring Oxford. - Clean comfortable room within 5 - 10 minutes walk from railway station. Staff were very friendly and accomodating to our requests and let us leave our bags even through we arrived well before check in. The restaurant serves excellent steaks so try to fit a lunch or evening meal in the restaurant with your stay. Breakfast is cooked to order and can keep you going for most of the day. Limited seating in the room, but if you are out exploring Oxford during the day, its not important.
- Stefania (8/5): -
- Alessandro (9/5): - La deco et le staff

- 2e (3/5): The steaks are great but I will never stay here again !!! - The steak was good I checked in and was brought to my room by one of the staff. Left my bags and came down to the restaurant to have something to eat and get some work done. It was not busy but the service was extremely slow and then my bill had to be corrected. It was much higher than it should have been. After paying I went to my room to find a couple had been checked into my room and my bags, coat, passport, etc. had all been removed. Went back downstairs and was just told there had been a mix up that I was given the wrong room and my stuff had been put in storage. There are only 7 or 8 rooms and the restaurant is not very big. Nobody consulted with me first or thought it might have been important to tell me while I was actually there all the time. I never left the restaurant which is also where they check every one in. This is just not acceptable !!!
- James (10/5): - Friendly and accommodating check in staff.
First class food and service on the restaurant
- Gabi (9/5): Kommen immer wieder.
- Aillie (8/5): Enjoyable and interesting stay - Very handy for the station and easy walk in to the center. Located in a residential street. It’s not that I didn’t like the property, but I did not realise that there was not a lounge to sit in. The pub is mainly a restaurant, then a bar. So if you are not eating but drinking you don’t get a table to sit at. There isn’t a place for residents, only bedrooms.
- Alison (7/5): Mixed bag but overall we liked it - Location close to station and not too far to walk into town. Smart decor, helpful staff, large room with comfortable facilities, ability to manage temperature of room (turn off radiators, open windows). Good breakfast, coffee. Milk available in fridge in landing and ample supply of coffee pods. Very close to noisy, vibrating construction work. Coffee machine didn't have instructions. Had to look up online how to dispense hot water. Sorry stair/landing carpets. Noise from room upstairs.
- MC SD (9/5): -
- Barney (8/5): Great location and friendly staff - Close proximity to the centre for all the shops, restaurants etc
The self serve milk for teas/coffees and water from the fridge No major issues
- François-xavier (8/5): Superbe endroit - Chambre joliment décorée, superbe petit déjeuner Chambre 04 située juste au dessus d'une bouche d'aération très bruyante
- Clarke (9/5): Great value for money. Would be fab location for sightseeing - Location, boutique-ness. Size of room No kettle or English teabags
- Iuliana (9/5): -
- Sébastien (10/5): -
- Holly (9/5): Little hidden gem for amazing food and a great room - Fantastic food, really friendly staff, lovely rooms, great location. The windows of our room directly faced some houses but with the blinds down it wasn’t a problem.
- Debbie (7/5): Convenient location. - Room was spacious, bed comfortable. Housekeeping was available daily.
Location was convenient.
Had breakfast each day and food was delicious and they were accommodating when we asked for something that wasn't strictly on the menu.
Large fridge on the communal landing with water, fresh milk and fruit available for guests was good.
Restaurant and room decor very nice. Arrival: Check-in was from 3pm.Got there at 245pm. Most places have a grace period and if arrive slightly before check-in time will allow you in. We were greeted with an intake of breath and "Ooh touch early for check-in." Then awkward silence. Made to wait until exactly 3pm. No offer of refreshment etc. Hardly a warm welcome.
We paid over £800 for 4 nights stay and couldn't be afforded 15 mins grace on arrival.
Another couple arrived after us at literally 3 mins to 3pm and were told the same thing. Made to wait 3 minutes.
Arrival welcome sets the tone and this wasn't the warmest.
Thankfully, things improved over the stay but this did leave a bad taste on arrival.
Cost: expensive for what it turned out to be. Expectations were higher. We had just had 4 nights in Cambridge at similar place which was just over half of the cost of this stay.
