- Z3733YOlynnc (10/5): Cosy,inviting hotel. - Stayed many times at this hotel but a first staying at New Year and booked again for this year.We had a package including breakfast,afternoon tea-one of the best Iāve ever had ,all home made,excellent.Buffet on New Yearās Day again couldnāt fault,either hot or cold food.One of the owners made us feel as if weād always known him and couldnāt have been more friendly.Room 15 was facing high street,lovely seating area,jacuzzi bath and shower.Highly recommend this hotel.
- kyliesG9051QM (10/5): Idyllic highland get away with everything - I had a wonderful stay at The George Hotel in Inveraray. The hotel is full of charm and character, but still incredibly comfortable. My room was cosy and spacious, with a deep bath and a fireplace, which made it the perfect place to relax. I also really appreciated how accommodating the team were ā I needed to add an extra night at short notice, and they went out of their way to rearrange things so I could stay in a room with a fireplace as Iād requested. The bar and restaurant downstairs had a great atmosphere, with excellent food and even some live music in the evening. The Sunday roast was amazing! I had the lamb. The location is ideal as well, right in the heart of town and easy to explore on foot. Iād happily stay here again and would definitely recommend it.
- Lakelandlove (8/5): Very good food, butā¦ā¦ā¦ - Arrived here on a Sunday for a late lunch. Food was really good. We both had the fish & chips and werenāt disappointed. My only gripe is the discretionary tip they add onto the bill (12.5%) I think. I know itās discretionary but who is going to ask for it to be taken off, that would just be embarrassing! I always tip for good service, but I would like to decide myself without being prompted, thank you!

I was instantly impressed by the surroundings the minute I walked in the door. We were greated by extremely friendly staff who made us feel really welcome. We made our way to the restaurant where we were met by Gavin who was more than happy to arrange our table for 2. Whilst waiting we got chatting to the barman who I think may be the owner. He went out of his way to chat to us about our day. The friendly and welcoming theme continued throughout our meal which was excellent. The service and hospitality was so genuine that we decided to book a room for the night. Breakfast at the George was as equally as good as the evening meal. All staff were attentive and made sure that you had everything you needed. The barman/owner from the night before came around all tables making sure everything was spot on Excellent experience and will most definitely be back. Thank you to all at The George. šš»
- Getaway30684319495 (10/5): Lovely traditional Scottish hotel - weāll be back - This is our third time at the George and weāve always loved the hotel. Itās a quirky old Scottish hotel, they have kept it maintained, whilst keeping the charm. The bar and restaurant area is fab and cosy, with live entertainment at weekends to add to it. Fantastic breakfast with tasty local produce. We had the chateaubriand on one night (delicious) and a selection of seafood the next. Staff were super friendly and welcoming. Seems to be doing well under new management.

If youāre looking for the best place to stay in Inveraray, this is it. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was outstanding. Sam, the owner, was amazing ā calm, warm, genuine and clearly passionate about both the hotel and making sure guests have a fantastic stay. The whole team were equally friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere throughout the hotel felt relaxed and authentic. We stayed in the Merchant Suite and it completely exceeded expectations. The room is absolutely stunning ā a huge, incredibly comfortable bed, beautiful exposed 17th-century stonework, a log burner, a double shower and even a jacuzzi for two. It somehow manages to feel historic, luxurious and incredibly cosy all at the same time. The food was just as impressive. We had the fresh fish and chips for dinner, served with curry sauce, tartare sauce and homemade mushy peas as standard. I donāt even normally like mushy peas, but these were so good I couldnāt stop eating them. Quite possibly the best fish and chips Iāve ever had. The homemade apple crumble that my wife had was absolutely delicious! Breakfast the next morning was equally fantastic ā high quality, freshly prepared and the perfect start to the day. The hotel itself is so impressive that I actually went outside just to film walking in and scanning around inside because I wanted to capture it. That probably says everything about how special the place is. Since coming home I genuinely havenāt stopped recommending The George Hotel to friends and family. If youāre visiting Inveraray and looking for a memorable hotel with incredible rooms, amazing food and truly welcoming hosts, this place is exceptional. We will absolutely be coming back. We would recommend The George Hotel in Inveraray to anyone looking for a special place to stay in the Highlands ā whether itās a romantic getaway, a relaxing break, or simply somewhere with fantastic food and genuinely welcoming hospitality.

- H1212PPpaulh (6/5): 1st visit since new management - Been here many times before visiting and staying. 1st we were told that we could only sit n have a drink with dog as lunch crowd over and it's not usually allowed, that was new as we have usually been able to go anywhere with dog in hotel. ( small bar was full). A good menu but not the variety of times past. My partner ordered the scallops, Ā£18 for 2 scallops ...nothing else on plate , found it to be a bit expensive for what was served. The Sunday roasts were lovely , the venison didn't seem as good quality although tasty. The haggis bon bons looked like they came from Aldi , no side salad etc n sauce was like HP mixed with bbq sauce very bitter. The menu used to be more adventurous and change frequently but seems to be pub classics n burgers now..All in all an ok meal but then we asked for the bill..now there is a service charge added, for our table it worked out approx Ā£16 ...I have no issue in leaving a tip but the amount should be the tables choice. This wasn't listed on the menu when ordering so was a total shock when presented with the bill which I don't think is ideal. As much as I love The George this has soured my opinion of it. I hope this is only teething problems for the new owners .

Such a friendly and welcoming place. Food was great and service amazing. We ate and drank in the bar and were made so welcome! Owner took feedback on food like I have never experienced before - and the food was good! We will be back for sure and the best time stay in the hotel.

- GoPlaces816993 (10/5): Magnificent Merchants Suite - My wife and I visited during a storm which left some of the town without power. The George had its own generator and was an oasis of calm! We spent the afternoon in the double jacuzzi bath in our room, in front of a log fire drinking whisky. Food was terrific. Seafood was high quality and cooked excellently. Staff were all charming, helpful and professional. We plan on returning in better weather as the setting and outdoor areas are great.

- leyannec (10/5): Saturday night dinner. - Enjoyed a fabulous meal at the hotel last night. Great atmosphere, and the service was 10/10. Started with oysters then I had delicious venison loin. My partner had a whole sea bass which he said was one of the best fish dishes he ever had. Our friends had the mussels and sirloin steak which they both loved. Just enough room for a knickerbocker glory and Ice cream. Lovely! Lucy was our waitress and she was a star!

The small bar is so cozy, darts and roaring log fire, great beer. Only one problem- I have to leave on tuesday. Host Sam was so friendly and considerate, Jas front of house was brilliant. Temiah was attentive and knew the menu, oysters to die for. The whole vibe in the hotel is family friendly as its family run. Will be back!

The hotel had the most cosy, festive Christmas atmosphere and was incredibly welcoming from the moment my family and I arrived. The food was outstanding and the service was exceptional throughout. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and very comfortable, which made travelling with our 1 and 3 year old so much easier. A perfect place for a festive getaway. We will definitely be returning!!

- 207rosiea (2/5): Different ownership, different standards!! - Weād booked in August for dinner for three evenings at the end of December for four people, based on an excellent, previous dining experience, where the food was fresh, beautifully prepared and presented. However, when we presented for the first of our three dinner bookings, it was a completely different story. The oysters were the first disappointment. Tiny, like the size of mussels and full of broken shell. The haggis, ordered by two of our party, was something mixed with what may have been mashed potatoes, and overcome by a sauce which was particularly overpowered by the addition of a huge amount peppercorns that did absolutely nothing for the dish. I would hazard a guess that it was to detract from the tasteless excuse of the āhaggisā. Two other party members requested the steak and ale pie. The lumps of meat were dry, hard and barely edible. So, extra gravy was required and requested to attempt to soften the meat inside the pie. But that meant extra gravy was requested again to enhance the chips and vegetables. Because one of the party members still wanted a little more gravy, that was requested too. However, on this occasion he was served a jug of pure animal fat! I have heard since that the hotel has been taken over since we last visited, and the drop in standards is remarkably obvious!

Came in for dinner and were welcomed by all staff, felt looked after and so at home. Staff couldnt do enough for us, checking in, recommending food and just being all round lovely people. The steak pie was unbelievable, didnt want it to end!! Ticked every box, customer care, ambience, great food, choice, lovely coffee and good patter. Looking at coming back to stay in one of the amazing hotel rooms in the future. Will not be the last time, we will be back as its now on the "must do regularly" list. If you havent already, go give them a visit. Wow x

- AJBarr (10/5): Excellent overnight stay - We got an Itison voucher for an overnight stay in a master room with Ā£20 each towards food. 2nd time coming here and weāre unsure as we heard it was under new management. From the point of booking to settling our bill, staff service was excellent, including bar and waiting staff. New manager is very hands on, mixing and chatting with the guests, and even serving some of the food. Very pleased to see that they have not lost any of its original character or charm. The rooms were very warm and cosy, decor in keeping with original style which we were glad to see. Everything feels charming, quaint and like a romantic novel version of Scotland. Bathroom was massive and the complimentary toiletries smelled lush. I spent so long in the roll top bath, I almost grew fins. The hospitality tray came with a selection of teas, coffees, hot chocolate, which was lovely, biscuits and pods for the espresso coffee machine. The food was always one the biggest attractions for us, and lived up to expectations. You could eat for your Ā£20 allowance if you chose some of the cheaper courses on the menu, but we chose to upgrade with some bar snacks before dinner and the house special of the day, venison loin. Pictures provided. Bar snacks of cheese straws with a blue murder dip which was amazing, scotch egg(cooked to perfection) with a home made brown sauce that was very earthy and peaty. Starters of Cullen skink, loaded with haddock and super creamy, prawn cocktail and a cheese board that was comfortably enough to share. The bar is very well stocked if you fancy a tipple by any of the big roaring fireplaces keeping the place cosy. Breakfast was full of all the usual cereals, fruits, pastries, breads etc, and you can opt for the traditional full fry up, (bonus for including haggis), but I plumped for a small granola pot which was lovely followed by smoked haddock and poached egg, while hubby opted for an avocado stack. All in all, a great wee break, and we will be returning soon

The welcome and the service from Adam was fantastic, all the staff were very attentive and the buffet was excellent, great selection of hot foods and the steak pie was the best weād ever tasted. The hotel is situated in the town and is a short walk to Inveraray Castle & grounds , Inveraray museum Jail and a handful of small tourist shops . Our large ,lovely room oozed charm with its open fire, a stand alone bathtub and loch views which made it the perfect place to relax . The restaurant did not disappoint offering up a good choice for everyone. Plenty of locally caught shell fish on the menu too much to my delight ! Sam ,Charlie, Jasmine and the team at The George are superb and we could not have been made to feel any more welcome. They were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable making our stay really comfortable. We will most definitely return .
- JeffB_11 (10/5): Fabulous Hogmanay!! - What a fabulous and ultra friendly this beautiful old historic hotel is! My family all had a wonderful time celebrating Hogmanay. Our rooms were stunning, the food of a high quality and so much, and the ambiance absolutely perfect (beautiful brick walls, at least three real fires on and the Christmas decorations so beautifully and no annoying flashing lights). But what really makes this hotel so special is how friendly the owner and his wonderful team are. If you are lucky enough to visit this absolutely stunning park of Scotland then you really must visit The George. Probably my favourite hotel in the whole of the UK.

We popped in to grab a sandwich as it was very wet & cold so we wanted somewhere warm & dry and we were so impressed. Gorgeous building with lots of original features & the open fires were a blessing. The food menu had so much choice & husband ended up with a full meal & pudding. I had the prawn sandwich & it was delicious and as well as a wide range of alcoholic drinks there were lovely hot teas! We could have quite easily settled in for the afternoon/ evening it was so welcoming. We are going to go back for an evening meal when we donāt have to drive so we can sample more of the delicious food & maybe a few drinks.

Every single staff member was beyond friendly and kind. They also were caring of food allergies and super professional. What a lovely bunch. They also gave my mum a birthday treat when they noticed her bag. 10/10 for everything. Also the double chocolate mousse blew my wig back.

The suites are absolutely incredible - I donāt know anywhere else that has log fires in the rooms or provides candles for a candlelit bath! Such an amazing experience to treat yourself to. We had dinner in the restaurant which was fantastic as usual and the puddings especially were unreal - definitely recommend the chocolate mousse! The staff throughout are so utterly lovely and welcoming. The new owners have done an amazing job bringing The George back to its best and we canāt wait to come back! - NicholasW1234567 (10/5): Perfect Scottish Retreat - We have been coming to The George every few years for 19 years and I am prompted to review (or re-review) because the hotel is under new ownership for the first time. Reception were welcoming and very helpful. The rooms while relatively unchanged and are still full of charm and luxury (deluxe master with jacuzzi bath and 4 poster bed). The bar with its open fire and fairy light ceiling is magical. The food was excellent with fresh langoustines and giant scallops, delicious loch fyne smoked salmon and braden rost. The chef accommodating to make our special off menu meal. The new owners friendly and havenāt tried to change what doesnāt need changing. I can live with the new automatic service charge because it was good service. An amazing stay again, canāt wait to return next year.

We loved the vibe and history of the George along with the food ,excellent service and it being truely dog friendly. All of this is still there ā¦ā¦. But even dare I say it better !!! The meal we had from the specials board was fantastic , local scallops & mussels to start ,Venison main with a cherry and chilli sauce to die for, followed by a fantastic carrot cake cheesecake which was a bit special ! All cooked too perfection. The subtle but effective changes implemented already have made a difference without losing the soul of the hotel which we have both come to love over the years. We had the pleasure of meeting Sam one of the new owners who introduced himself to us as he was working with the team on the evening a really nice bloke and you can see that he cares and that the Hotel is in safe hands and will continue to be one of our favourites

We stayed in The Merchant's Suite which was gorgeous - the wood burning stove, the unbelievable bath - it really is the perfect room for a Winter Stay. We ate in the restaurant and had very good langoustines and scallops. The staff were very welcoming and warm. We really couldn't fault anything.

Weād had such a bad experience that we swore weād never set foot in the place again. Then someone mentioned it had changed hands, so we took a chanceā¦ and thank god we did. Itās like a completely different place. The food is back to being properly good, the staff are warm, switched-on and actually seem to care, and the whole place just has that old magic again. We ended up in twice in two days because the food was that good. Saturday lunch was heaving but everything was spot on ā the soup, the ciabattas, the burgers ā all absolutely banging. Then we went back on Sunday for the roast and the beef was unreal. Honestly, if you havenāt been since the changeover, youāre missing out. Roaring fire, brilliant staff and management, and food thatās genuinely worth going out of your way for.

We had a great welcome on arrival and were taken into the bar area, which was very busy, so we are glad we booked. We had a lovely table and we weren't hurried at all to order, we were given time to order drinks and have a quick chat with friends before ordering. I ordered the smoked haddock with mash and a cheese sauce, with the seasonal veg, my husband ordered the steak pie and our friends had the fish and a burger. The smoked haddock dish was absolutely superb, I could have eaten it twice over and the veg very fresh. My husband and our friends were not disappointed with their meals either. We all ordered puddings which were, again, very good. We had a lovely couple of hours, the service throughout was exceptional and we will definitely visit again. On a sunny day like today, I can't think of another place I would rather have been. Thank you

The town itself, transforms itself to a simplar time. The George and its cosy rooms, warm wood fires and cosy interiors always makes me feel relaxed away from home. It also offers a man in his latest thirties/ early forties a chance to enjoy a dance with good quality drinks and timeless tracks.. A good walk in stunning scenery can shake off those cobwebs from the previous night. Alex was amazing and super welcoming.

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to the Library Suite, where the design is very original and quite quirky. There is a massive jacuzzi bath and a double shower. The bedroom is as the name with lots of interesting books and a big leather sofa. I always think what makes a place extra special is the staff, and you could not get any better Scottish Hospitality. They are always very helpful and happy to have a wee chat with you, give advice on local places of interest. The labyrinth of rooms all serve food, and if you want there is a cosy fire to sit by. Dinner was very tasty, I tried their delicious fish and chips. They also have their āspecialsā which changes every day. Thank you to The George and we will be back.
- O3968WUsg (8/5): Super comfortable historical charm - On our way further north, we broke our journey here and stayed one night on their Sunday Snug tariff. As advised, we booked a table for dinner at the same time & later, we were very glad we had. Storm Amy arrived in town before us & The George was the only hotel in town with its own generator so the staff were very busy dealing with transfers but nevertheless we were given a very warm welcome & told we had been upgraded to a beautiful room on the first floor at the front of the hotel. This room was beautiful and very comfortably furnished and with Ć large en-suite including a jacuzzi bath & walk in shower. The restaurant and bar area was very busy when we went down for dinner but having booked our table in advance we had nothing to do but enjoy the ambiance of a busy, international restaurant. Service was excellent & friendly and the food delicious. As our room was at the front of the hotel & therefore over part of the restaurant/bar, I was slightly worried about noise but I neednāt have worried- our room was quiet, peaceful and warm and I had a fabulous nightās sleep in the amazingly comfy bed. It was a real effort to force myself out of it the next morning! The only two niggles Iād mention about the room are that the water pressure/temperature of the shower was a bit poor & that I would have appreciated a dedicated vanity area/dressing table in the bedroom. However my only real problem with our stay at The George is that it was only for one night, I would happily have stayed longer. This is a hotel with great staff in an old building, with creaky wooden floorboards, a beautiful staircase and much character; if modern luxe is your thing, it might not be for you but for me it definitely calls for a longer return visit.
- OrsayHouseIslay (6/5): The new owners have got a big task ahead - Having stayed here before, albeit in a de-luxe room, we booked a two night weekend break in a standard room. We booked the room before the hotel went into administration and stayed after the new owners had taken over. On checking in we had the usual warm welcome but were surprised when we entered the room, lights were hanging out of the ceiling, net curtains were very dirty, radiator was stained, PAT testing had expired ( there was even a round 3pin plug in use) one of. the double sockets was faulty (missing neutral)the toiletries had been in the bottles so long they had separated ( fixed to the wall so we couldnāt shake them) fittings were loose and the toilet brush was disgusting. But on a positive note the evening meals and service were very good. However breakfast was a letdown! I spoke with the owner and although I appreciate they canāt fix everything straight away there needs to be a a urgent program of remedial work to bring this great hotel back to the standard expected.

- Blandorum (4/5): Disappointed - We heard The George had changed hands and as we were staying locally with friends having popped from Helensburgh we popped in on a Saturday to reserve a table for Sunday for my birthday Gavin was most helpful On Sunday we arrived and had a great table by the fireplace Our waitress Megan was most helpful and explained the menu in detail to my partner who is coeliac and requires gluten free. Megan herself is gluten free and was thus aware of the dangers of non gluten free food. I had Cullen skink as my starter and fed back to Chef via Megan I thought it was one of the best I had ever had Our roast lunches arrived, (served by another waitress) and looked dry n unappetising We were about to start when Megan dashed over and took away my partnerās lunch as the pigs in blankets were not gluten free. Not her fault as she had told the kitchen of the allergy Phew ! I then ate my dull roast alone which was too dry and in the main tasteless My partnerās meal arrived as I was almost finished Not a great way to have a birthday lunch frankly She also found her main dry and dispiriting We didnāt to stay for dessert Gavin n Megan were great Atmosphere great Soup great Main course less than average and sadly disappointing We left the full service charge

Was lovely to see same staff Jules and Gavin are just amazing looked after us from the minute we arrived, such a lovely pair. Every member of staff we came in contact with was polite and friendly. We had chicken pate followed by roast beef. It was the best roast beef we had in a long time. Perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. All the produce is local. We would highly recommend eating here. We will definitely be back when we are next in Scotland. Thank you to all the staff. Wish I had taken a picture of the starter and the roast before I started eating it lol... presentation was perfect x
- sjwbigcats (6/5): Charming, historical hotel - We weren't thrilled with our room. Kind of an antique, shabby chic decor, not very attractive. Gave a dark basement feel to it. A bit sparse re: attention to detail for guests. The bathroom was very large with nice lighting (large window). The shower didn't have a door, which allowed a bit of the water out. The water temp (especially for the bath) was just not hot enough. The hotel doesn't have an elevator, but has a lot of stairs! No staff that helped us with our luggage. The pub is very cozy, lovely ambiance. Food (fish & chips) was average.

- jodil302 (10/5): Truly dog friendly place to eat! - We popped into the George hotel whilst visiting Inveraray for the day. We had a rather large greyhound with us and we were all a bit wet. Straight away all the staff were so nice and welcoming, leading us to the perfect table with room for our dog, right by a roaring fire too so he'd dry off! He loved all the fuss and attention he got throughout,including treats, a sausage and fresh water. They really couldn't do enough to make us all feel welcome. The food was very nice too. With lots of it!

- Inspire41310561949 (10/5): Charming hotel that takes you back in time - Touring through Scotland, I stayed at the George Hotel for only one night, but it was enough of a memorable experience that I am leaving this review. Being an American, I was immediately taken back in time the minute I stepped through the doors. I felt like I was back in 1776 in a pub that our founding fathers would have met in. I was traveling with family, so it was fun to tour everybody's rooms, because they are all so unique. While there, we met the new owner who was just delightful to chat with. We could tell he is putting his heart and soul into making this a place that travelers want to stay in. The staff was also so fun to chat with and so helpful with information. We ate lunch and breakfast the following day and both meals were absolutely delicious. I had the meat pie and it was so much better than the pie my brother had ordered a few days earlier in a different city. I would totally recommend this hotel.

We were staying around 40 minutes away in an Air b&b which was dreadful so it was really nice to find this little gem in a beautiful place. The food was delicious & I really loved the feel and vibe of the place. Dark, but really cosy with the fire roaring. The staff were 10/10. They gave Louis sausages & even brought our pudding out with a candle & a beautiful rendition of Happy Birthday! Sadly we did not get their names - but thank you! We loved this place & have already started looking to book a room for a little winter getaway! We will hopefully be back very soon.

The room was lovely with a view of the loch and the staff were all very friendly. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was fabulous with fresh, local produce cooked simply and well. Was served by a lovely Gentleman named Raphael, catered very well to our needs and was a polite young boy. Food was delicious, no fault whatsoever. Beautiful interior aswell. 10/10. Thank you.
- David (8/5): - This property is 160 years old so you have to expect that not everything will be great. There is a small parking lot which was full. Your parking choices are on the street or at a historic jail which is in back of the hotel. There is no elevator. Our room was spacious with a king bed and a sofa and chair. The bathroom was very large with a jacuzzi tub and shower. It is located in a very small village which closes down around 5 so there was little noise at night. Breakfast was included and it was wonderful. Inveraray Castle is 5 minutes away and a must see if you like to tour castles.

The recepionists were extremely kind at the accueil.

- Kenneth (8/5): The George 11 & 12 July 2025. - The Hotel was probably one of the oldest we have ever stayed at. Considering this we found everything to work adequately. The hot and cold taps in the en-suite were not per the usual, the hot tap being on the lhs? The shower head had little flow and took a little bit of twiddling to get to an adequate temperature. The food was quite expensive and did not live up to the cost.

We had dinner last night - one seafood platter, one main course langoustine - delicious. One sticky toffee pudding - loved by my daughter. One cheesecake enjoyed by me. However, I was astonished that I was refused pouring cream with my cheesecake. I was told there was none. I can't believe The George had no cream in the establishment! Very disappointing shrug of the shoulders by the waiter, and when I mentioned it to bar staff when paying, I was given some story about different quantities from milk suppliers. Whatever the reason, get the basics in; use the local Co-op if needed! Paying over Ā£100 for dinner for 2 people - a small jug of cream should not be too much to expect. I decided against coffee, because an after dinner coffee is nothing without cream š There is a very different feel to The George, and the passion has gone from the team. Sad times.

Staff did their best other than at breakfast when the service was very poor and unwelcoming. Rooms need maintenance - broken shower fittings, bulbs missing or not working, generally very tired. Has huge potential so lets hope a Buyer comes along soon
