Guest Reviews
- Neil (9/5): Great place to stay for a visit to the IOM with friendly hosts. - Great location
- KARUN (9/5): -
- Murray (8/5): Pretty good place, very helpful owner - Location, cleanliness, helpful owner Hardly any water coming out of shower head
- Jameel (9/5): -
- Anton (7/5): Enjoyed, thanks - Excellent position, easy walk to town and promenade. Lovely breakfast, thanks Not spacious, but good value for money.
- Daniel Keedwell (8/5): A nice little place to stay if you are looking for a short break on the Isle of Man - The property was well kept and very adequate for what we required for our stay. We enjoyed the breakfasts each morning, and the hosts were able to accommodate our requirements when we asked for them. The location was good, and handy for catching the buses each day. We were also in good walking distance of any shops and eating places. No fruit provided for breakfast, which would've been nice. Partner struggled with getting up and down the stairs daily, but they were not steep, so this was not an issue for me, or anyone else with adequate mobility
- Kim (10/5): -
- Kieran (10/5): A good value for money place and a decent location - Great breakfast; the full English was brilliant. The staff was excellent too, especially offering us a takeaway breakfast when we were checking out early to get to the airport. Also gave us lots of good sightseeing tips. Nice location next to the city centre and the beach; there is a little hill getting there but it’s really not that bad.

- Lowe (9/5): enjoyable - when we arrived the owner was there to hand the keys to the rooms took us up and told us about breakfast arrangement and the time we would be eating and the food was good enjoyable stay recommended. would have liked to have had a flannel in the shower cubicle
- Edmundo (10/5): Great stay - Clean and near the town centre.
- Angela (10/5): Excellent guest house, superb breakfast. - Good location. Beautiful room and bathroom. Excellent breakfast. No complaints or issues.
- Linda (9/5): Friendly homely and clean - The breakfast was amazing. Peter very happy to make each breakfast to suit me each morning .
- stuart (9/5): Host was very helpful advise what to do and just nice place to stay - Location help with what to do
- James (6/5): Good value and a friendly welcome - Peter, the host, was friendly and welcoming. He had a lot of local information and was always willing to help. The cooked breakfast was good. It seemed that Peter was running the place singlehandedly! We would have liked some fruit and yoghurt with our breakfast. Our room was rather cramped. There was an ensuite, but the sink was in a corner of the bedroom with a distant and rather high unlit mirror that made shaving difficult. The toilet space in the small bathroom was very limited. My wife had backache after sleeping in the single bed. The room and its fittings were rather dated and needing some tlc.
- John (9/5): Practical choice in good location. Host very obliging. - Breakfast okay but a little limited in variety. Only had a small towel for first 2 days (remedied after).
- Mike (10/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): A very nice stay - The price, very convenient, very clean, excellent breakfast. Very friendly. Accommodation was excellent but the Hill was tough.
- Andrea (9/5): -
- Roy (8/5): - Breakfast lovely
- William (9/5): - Breakfast. Was good. Location was good for transport links. Peter was extremely helpful It was good value for money
- Matthew (10/5): -
- Meredith (8/5): - Location of guest house was excellent. Very central to main roads going around the Island and Port The shower tray needed a proper clean particularly underneath where the door slides. I appreciate that it is a difficult place to clean but a thin bottle brush should do the job.
- Tendai (10/5): - Clean room, very friendly service with essy check in at the guesthouse, full english breakfast everyday with cereal choices and juice available. Location is very central, walkable distance to the ferry station, bus stop and the city centre.
- Manuel (9/5): -
- Joseph (6/5): -
- MARK (10/5): - Peter, the owner, can't do enough for you...just wants to make sure you are happy and comfortable.
His knowledge of His island is immeasurable...obviously loves where he lives and instills a want on you to visit it all, we will be coming back to do just that 😉
- juan (10/5): very pleasant and relaxing - breakfast was excellent; location great for bike parking on street all day; good facilities nearby; view over the bay
- rick (10/5): -
- Wood (10/5): - Very clean and comfy room.
Excellent breakfast each day.
Very friendly and helpful staff.

- Alan (10/5): Great stay, convenient location. Thankyou. - I took a short notice 4 night stay during the 2025 Manx GP/Classic TT.
The excellent host Peter must be mentoned for his efficiency, friendliness and overall knowledge of the Isle of Man.
The property is 15 mins walk from the Douglas ferry terminal/bus terminal and 25 mins walk to the TT/Manx GP paddock/pits area with Bray Hil approx 20 mins walk. Also only 5 mins walk down to the beach/promenade so ideally suited for ferry foot passengers.
Thoroughly recommended.

- Chilla_89 (9/5): -
- Janet (8/5): Enjoyed.. felt welcome but would not stay again due to location - Full English was hot & well presented, felt welcome Location, was not advised on incline, discovered better way to get from town myself
- Heidi (10/5): Fantastic - we’re going back!!! - Spotless and really comfortable accommodation close to the centre of Douglas but still really quiet at night. Peter couldn’t have been more pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was amazing! Everything was great - nothing to dislike.
- robert (10/5): holiday - Wonderful owner who helps you with information about the island. great breakfast
- Jacqueline (10/5): - This is the second time we have stayed there. Peter, the host, was very accommodating even changing our room to the one that we stayed in before. The breakfast is very good and sets you up for the day. It’s a very short walk to the shops from the guest house.
- Liz (10/5): - Everything The walk up the hill
- Mr (9/5): Terrific value for money .I would highly recommend The Melrose - Good location very clean bedroom and bathroom. Lovely breakfast and friendly host Bit of a steep walk up to the property.
- Maura (10/5): Great place to stay in Douglas - Lovely fresh, clean room with bathroom, tea & coffee, everything needed for comfortable stay. Good generous breakfast. The host, Peter, was extremely welcoming and helpful, and lots of local knowledge to share. Convenient to ferry, shops, Manx museum and Promenade. Good transport links for exploring island. Stayed 6 nights, had a great holiday. Would go back.
- Malcolm (7/5): Friendly host and reasonable accommodation -
- Graham (8/5): Very good -
- Matthew (10/5): Great location and room - very comfortable, clean, and with good amenities. Would highly recommend! - Great location and room - very comfortable with sink and TV and clean shared bathroom.
Peter was very helpful and welcoming throughout my stay. Generous cooked breakfast, toast, and cereal options were provided.
- Cochrane (10/5): Superb B&B in Douglas with a magnificent Breakfast! - Lovely situation with buses at the top of the road, superb Breakfast, and everything was quite excellent. I will certainly stay at "Melrose" again!
- Jean (9/5): Superb - Friendly and comfortable and breakfast 👍 Didn't like the steep climbs to hotel from promenade
- Cheryl (8/5): Very good -
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): - Clean and comfortable. Full marks to the owner for sorting out the food allergy items that I had forgotten to mention in the original booking. We would stay here again if in the area.
- Dilys (8/5): Very good -
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jason (8/5): Great Location - Peter was very hospitable and friendly, breakfast was amazing. Would stay again!
- David (8/5): Nice and friendly - Very good lots to choose Nil
- Ferna (8/5): Very good - Host pleasant and friendly Room very small
Breakfast choices could have been better but adequate
- Robert (8/5): - Look, it’s a guesthouse not the Ritz! Room was small but perfectly functional and newly fitted out. Property itself slightly stuck in a time warp but really well managed and friendly. Excellent breakfast.
- Javier (8/5): Very good -
- Anthony (9/5): Superb - Breakfast excellent. Host, Peter, was a thoroughly nice bloke who obviously cares about looking after his guests. Sure the furniture doesn't match, some of the decor is a bit dated and so on. If you care about that sort of thing, this isn't the place for you (I'd prefer to call it unpretentious). If, on the other hand, you want to feel part of a happy little band of well-looked after guests, as I did, it's spot on. Especially good for single travellers and couples, in my view. Proximity to the Woodbourne hotel (best pub in Douglas by miles) is an added bonus.
- Vincent (9/5): Superb -
- Mead (6/5): Pleasant - The breakfast was very good Peter was so helpful and friendly if you needed to know anything he was on hand The location was a climb and a half up the hill from the centre and then the stairs in the guest house to the top floor so you need a room near the bottom otherwise it was fine
- Claire (8/5): - Cheap & cheerful b&b close to the shops.
- Starr (8/5): Good location and quiet - Breakfast very good as was location All rooms with wc
- Jelle (9/5): Superb - Peter is a lovely, kind and relaxed host, always in for a nice little chat. Excellent breakfast, and good beds.
- Anonymous (7/5): Good - The room was comfortable and clean. The beds were very comfy. Tea and coffee facilities that were replenished daily. The complimentary breakfast was delicious. Ad well as cereal and toast, we enjoyed a full English breakfast which really set us up for a day exploring. I enjoyed the view of the sea from the bay window while eating my breakfast. The hotel was in a good location, close to main bus routes and town and sea front. The bathroom was only small but was very clean. We were at the top of the house (55 steps) to the bedroom, which I didn't remember seeing on the hotel page. It was fine for us but wouldn't be suitable if you had mobility problems as it was quite a trek.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - The host couldn't have done more for us. The Melrose is convenient for the shops although there was a short uphill walk to get back. The room although compact was clean, the bedding was lovely and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was good, cereal, orange juice, Tea or coffee and a full english and there was also the offer of Manx kippers if you wanted them.. There are a lot of stairs up to the rooms but that is typical of the B&Bs in Douglas. If I have one slight criticism it's that we could have done with a couple of bedside tables to put things like phones, glasses and other things on as we could only leave these things on the shelf by the kettle. We would definitely stay here again.
- Oliver (10/5): Excellent place to stay - Great location to access Douglas and very close to the Manx Museum. Breakfast was lovely every morning Can’t say there was any fault to our stay
- Yuhang (9/5): Good value for money, recommended - The staff were super friendly and helpful and the breakfast was superb The bathroom drain was clogged
- Declan (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - My room was small however it was comfortable Sharing a bathroom
- Arve (8/5): Suitable place for my visit. - The breakfast was good and gave energy for the whole day. Was missing some printed info about the time for breakfast.
- Steffen (7/5): Good -
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (9/5): Superb - The guest house was very clean and very accessible. The staff was very helpful and friendly and made sure he catered to everyone’s need. Pleasure to deal with and would highly recommend great value for money would stay again
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location. Fabulous hot full breakfast. Owner very friendly and informative to help with transport planning. Breakfast only between 8 till 9 am daily.
- Pauline (8/5): We needed a break to chill and that’s exactly what we got - Great location. Good breakfast. Owner very helpful and welcoming. All good.
I would have loved to be able to sit in a deckchair in the sun. Yes !! we had some 😄
- Jayne (6/5): Pleasant -
- Richard (8/5): Great host, great value, - Clean, friendly and great value.
Nice full breakfast Everything was fine
- Clive (8/5): Very good - Food was good beds nice clean lining Stairs to many to climb
Very steep
- Charlotte (8/5): Very good -
- Greg (9/5): Superb - Friendly host, good size room, shower was fine, good breakfast every morning - really good they were accommodating to give me a vegan breakfast. Good that we got a parking permit and there were no issues with this. Breakfast served at a good reasonable time, 8am. Access into the building was easy I had to provide my own oat milk as I'm vegan. The host provided almond milk though did not check this with me beforehand.
I was a little concerned the door in was always open meaning that anyone could have just wandered in.
Nothing the host could do but I woke up a number of times from the noise of the seagulls
- Hilda (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (2/5): never again - nothing much about the guest house, i cant believe the reviews or photos of the place there was no heating, and on one of the worst Junes I've known, the house was freezing. As the owner didn't live on site the door was left open. The TV lounge was locked and was being used as a storeroom. so it was impossible for my party of 4 to sit together as the bedrooms had 1 chair only and that was squeezed in. The onsuite was so small I couldn't bend to wash my feet in the shower and had to go sideways past the sink to use the lavatory. As we walked in past the tables and chairs at the front of the house, we should have known then with all the miss-matched furniture something was amiss, the owner is trying to run a business while doing renovations I believe, finally on the last day of our stay he supplied fan heaters for the rooms. as for the area, a local told me it was the worst in Douglas and she thought all the guest houses had shut down there
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Cathal (8/5): Was what we wanted a nice place and friendly owner - In a great location owner was nice and friendly. N/a
- Barbara (6/5): We only used the accom for breakfast and sleeping so its did its job - Its location and price Shower room extremely small
- David (9/5): What we expected, good location for town and the grandstand. - Great breakfast, between 8&9 had to get up early but we didn't miss one.I
- Mark (9/5): Great breakfast, helpful host, central location - Great breakfast and coffee. Compact room but it had everything we needed, incl comfortable bed and good WiFi. Handy for Manx Museum, ferry and bus termini, and sea front. Host very helpful. The view from our room was limited, but we had booked late and were out every day exploring the island - so the view didn't matter to us. Also the shower more than met our expectations.
- Gd (10/5): A little gem. - A little gem of a b&b where we were welcomed in. Couldn't do enough for us and even went out and got Manx smoked kippers for our breakfast one morning after a conversation about us having had them over 40 years ago! Nothing.
- Morris (6/5): Great value for money. Would defo stay again!! - Friendly and polite staff, breakfast good, room met our needs adequately. If you want to feel like you are back in the better times of the 80's this one ticks all the boxes! 52 steps up to our room but it did me good!!
- Justin (7/5): Cheap stay during the ManxGP - Stayed during the ManxGP, and the room was clean. Good shower and breakfast, tea and coffee in the room just what you would expect from a B and B. It's away from the front a little but close enough to everything you need, bus stop 4 minutes away and prob a 10-minute walk to the front. Local shops and takeaway close. Cheap compared to others and a little bit more basic, which suits me perfectly. In comparison, it would have cost the same for the two of us to stay in the local hostel. The mattress was a little tired, still a good night's sleep.
- Jake (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice friendly host
- Jill (7/5): It was a family emergency and the owner was very helpful with bus times etc - It was clean, bed was very comfortable The shower
- Kenneth (8/5): Definitely stop here again - The Melrose is similar to other Manx B&B I have used, The property while looking tired and dated is adequate for my type of stay.
The Host Peter makes the difference here, very amiable, very helpful, interested in talking to you, serves a cracking full English breakfast, piping hot with great quality ingredients, great coffee too. The room was refreshed every day with tea and coffee etc, plenty too, TV is BBC only tho, bed was really comfy, would I stay again, too right I would, if it works out next year I will book again.
- Andrew (8/5): Pleasant stay in a lovely B&B. Excellent value - The Melrose Guest House is a b&B in Fouglas. It's in a good location within 10 minutes walk from the Promenade and Town Centre
Overall the place looks a little tired and dated both inside and out and would benefit from some updating
My single room was small but cosy and included a TV, tea making facilities and a wash basin in the room. The toilet and bathroom were shared.
Service was good with the hosts Peter and Xin being very friendly, welcoming and helpful. A delicious full cooked breakfast was served each day and they were happy to make changes to suit individual tastes.
My stay was excellent value for money at under £150 for three nights. I would consider staying again but would probably book a larger room if I did.
- Lynne (9/5): Superb - Wonderful host and perfect location . Just needed a redecoration
- Pragnell (5/5): The lack of a door to the washing/toilet facilities spoilt our stay. - The breakfast was satisfactory but it would have been nice not to have had Radio 2 blasting out in the background from the kitchen. My wife and I were appalled that in our room the washing facilities and toilet was only separated from the bedroom by a curtain. I would have expected a door. This was NOt good enough. I imagine other guest might be unhappy about this.
