Guest Reviews
- Melanie (10/5): Comfortable room and bed. Very relaxing! - It was a lovely overnight stay. The room was clean and fresh and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
There was plenty of tea and coffee available for the room with a top up station on the landing if more was required.
The only problem was finding it as there is no sign outside!
Thank you Jo and John for your hospitality 😊

- Marian (9/5): - The staff were lovely and helpful. The snug area and the room were inviting and comfortable.
- Keith (8/5): - Great location with multiple walking paths close by. Fantastic hosts and a very enjoyable stay. Many thanks
- derrick (10/5): -
- Roz (7/5): Lovely location and a nice comfortable room. - Beautiful house and a lovely room with a view and freestanding bath. Honesty bar was a nice touch. Great location. Comfortable bed. Good facilities in the room. Breakfast could be better. Continental is fine but it was £10 per person and extra for tea/coffee. Bagels were a bit stale and pasties weren’t fresh. It should be included in the cost of the room because the rate isn’t cheap.
- Michael (9/5): - Communication was great from the point of booking. John and Jo were very accommodating and helped out with everything that was needed. Very friendly, very clean and a great hotel. It was a shame there was only a continental breakfast, but plenty of it to satisfy our morning hunger 😁
- Kay (7/5): Not sure we will come bank again - Stayed before great location beautiful building with easy access to Whitby It wasn’t as good as last year. Tea coffee biscuits were not as good quality and not readily available to top up. Disappointed that the breakfast was only continental now
- Paul (8/5): Would stay again - Building was lovely with a great garden and honesty bar The room was a little too noisy from road traffic
- Lynda (9/5): Excellent location for walking into Whitby and the surrounding area. - The warm welcome and assistance to my room with my case. Room was up two flights of stairs.
Room was warm, airy, lots of space to relax and enjoy the views over the gardens and beyond.
A rocking chair placed in the window was an ideal location for reading and relaxation.
A settee separated the room making a very comfortable living area.
The bathroom was modern, bright, and exceptionally clean.
Tea & Coffee facilities had good choice with topping station on landing for extra supplies if required.
The breakfast was continental with plenty of choice of fresh fruits, yogurts, cereals, cold meats, cheeses. Choice of breads, bagels, crumpets.
Ample private parking.
Location was excellent for walking into Whitby along a well made patch by the railway line. (Takes around 40 minutes to the centre) Difficult to find following Sat Nav. Do not follow Google Maps when in the village as it takes you the wrong way.
No non slip shower mat available, shower tray extremely smooth, prone to slips.

- Carl (10/5): A lovely place - Beautiful building and great location. We stayed in a junior suite, Rm 10, and it was clean, warm, comfortable and great value for money.
A lovely pub 2mins walk away and close to Whitby aswell.
Will definitely look at this accfirst when we re-visit Whitby again

- Carol (10/5): -
- Babs (10/5): - My expectations have been totally blown away 😍
The hotel itself is so cozy and welcoming, exactly the "home away from home" vibe I was looking for.
Feeling relaxed and very lucky ❤️

- Lynn (10/5): A perfect stay in Whitby! - Our stay was only 2 nights. The staff were lovely and helpful and very welcoming. The room was immaculate, we stayed in the junior suite in Room 10. The Hall itself is steeped character and history and everything was tastefully decorated in keeping with the theme. There is a pub only a minute walk from the hall where we were able to have a lovely evening meal when we arrived, again with staff that were attentive and friendly. Whitby and the abbey is only a very short drive from the hall too so this was an added bonus. There is an honesty bar in the lovely snug, where customer help themselves to drinks and leave their name and what they used from the fridge, to be charged to their account at the end of the visit. There was absolutely nothing that I didn't like! Amazing place!
- Donna (10/5): -
- Brian (10/5): What a fantastic hotel - Jo & John are absolutely wonderful hosts, extremely accommodating, professional, extremely helpful and kind - simply a wonderful husband and wife team.
The suite room 3 was spotless, very comfortable bed, great quality bedding. And the feee standing bath ! Just wow 👌 room temperature just right, not to cold or to hot.
The building itself is spellbinding 🩷 fantastic facilities.
We thoroughly enjoyed every moment there.
See you soon
Warmest Regards
Jemma & Brian x There's nothing not to like - perfect stay 🩷
- David (10/5): our party was 5 x couples and we all thought it was great - lovely period room
property was full of character
great continental breakfast
- ewan hodges (9/5): Excellent stay … recommended - Very nice and excellent value Nothing
- McEwan (9/5): Far above our expectations.Couldn't fault anything. - Location good. A choice of cooked breakfast would be good.
- Charlotte (8/5): Lovely night away in Whitby - Beautiful property
- Daniel (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): From start to finish an excellent experience, great room and facilities and in a great location. - Location and the room Nothing
- Robert (9/5): Lovely venue and helpful hosts - Lovely, quiet location, just a few minutes drive from Whitby. We booked a Junior Suite, which was spacious and featured a roll-top bath in the room. Great rainfall shower in the bathroom too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Unlimited top ups for room beverages was handy too. Free parking. Nothing not to like really. Bathroom was a little cold at first, but warned up, once towel rail was on.
- Samantha (10/5): -
- mike (10/5): - Pleasant welcome, very spacious clean room and comfortable bed. Nothing
- Gail (8/5): Whitby January 2026 - Love little find. Enjoyed our stay. A little too far out of Whitby. The breakfast wasn't worth £10+
- cracknell (10/5): - Great location and such a historically beautiful place. Nothing
- Simon (10/5): -
- Shaun (9/5): -
- Clare (10/5): -
- Jude (5/5): - The location and view were fab but the hotel was very tired and needs updating No hot breakfast
- Kev (9/5): -
- NEVILLE (10/5): -
- David (10/5): Great value for monies and recomend to others - So liked the quietness and the after 9pm until 8am rule of quietness ... Some guests not adhering to the quiet rule
- Mary (9/5): Very pleasant - Bed and room very comfortable. Excellent choice at breakfast Nothing, perhaps the stairs !
- Annmarie (7/5): Lovely proximity to explore Whitby Abbey and surrounding areas. - Beautiful building. Comfortable bed. Really lovely bathroom and shower. Friendly and knowledgeable reception. Room 2 is small, I don’t feel like it was a deluxe king. The bathroom was lovely, but it needs shelves for toiletries.
- Marie (8/5): -
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Alison (9/5): Excellent stay We have been before and would return - Full of character
Great location
Good breakfast
Friendly staff Got too warm in the night and couldn’t open a window.
- Andrew (10/5): Great place to stay, very comfortable and welcoming. - Easy check in with a very nice lady who showed us our room. All very good
- Neale (10/5): We would definitely stay again, the buidling was beautiful & full of history - Room & bed were clean, comfortable & provided everything we needed. Had to pay extra for breakfast but it was well worth the extra money. I would book directly in future as breakfast wasn't included with booking.com
- Robert (8/5): Restful stopover in a lovely area close to Whitby. - Very pleasant period house.
Close to amenities and nice riverside and cinder track walks. N/A
- Lorraine (9/5): Great for walking alongside the railway line into Whitby. Friendly pub nearby with great food. - Gorgeous building. Warm and comfortable. Friendly welcoming staff

- Beverley (8/5): - Great snug room ( with honesty bar ) to sit with friends staying. The continental breakfast was plentiful.
- Steve (9/5): Historical property in good location to visit the local area. - Lovely building with parking. Warm and comfortable bed. Clean with teas and coffees provided in the room. Noise from neighbouring bedrooms.
- Jennifer (8/5): -
- Heather (9/5): -
- Sarah (5/5): Unfortunately not a very good overnight stay. - Clean and tidy. The bed was too soft (maybe personal choice), the room appeared to have been one large room at some point and made into two, with a very thin paper wall separating the two rooms. We heard everything the people in the adjoining room said and heard every little noise. That, combine with the very soft bed, didn’t make for a good nights sleep.
- Brown (5/5): -
- Emma (10/5): -
- Pegasus01 (10/5): Fabulous Guest house - Lovely historic building and features in rooms. Very clean. Loved the very deep stand alone bath and very modern bathroom ensuite. Loved tv in lounge area off the bedroom as well as having a tv in bedroom. Very cosy. Continental breakfast was very nice and had a good choice. Could not fault it.
- Lee (9/5): A trip to Whitby - Beautiful building, beautiful room, excellent facilities, lovely staff, great location for trips to Whitby and Robin Hoods bay
Got to mention the excellent pub just down the road along with the local butchers
Had a great time
- Rose (10/5): Great two nights stay - The welcome from our hosts was amazing. It was a cold day and the log fire added to the homely relaxed and warm atmosphere. All was clean and the bed felt like sleeping on a cloud.
An amazing butchers is really close who served bacon rolls that were delicious and good value. Very close to lots of lovely countryside and interesting places. The museum at Staithes is well worth a visit and free. You can donate towards the upkeep if you wish.
I would happily return to Ruswarp Hall, we really enjoyed our stay, thank you. We enjoyed it all
- Jane (9/5): - Comfortable bed N/a
- Christine (10/5): Lovely rest - Lovely breakfast very peaceful Filling the kettle in the sink
- Lynne (10/5): Comfortable and quirky enough to be interesting. - Staff were lovely and did their best to accommodate us.
We were concerned because there was only a continental breakfast but were pleasantly surprised. There was lots of choice and more than enough. The weather, but I couldn't blame the property or staff for that. 😀
- Jackson (8/5): -
- Nick (10/5): - Lovely relaxing hotel with "atmosphere" Nothing really
- Ginette (9/5): Lovely hotel in a lovely village - Beautiful building very quiet location lovely rooms No sign outside drove past it twice had to ask someone where it was
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Noel (10/5): Thoroughly excellent, we loved it - thank you. - We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome and shown to our room on the top floor. The room was lovely and large, well appointed and had plenty of space to relax. The bathroom was clean, spacious with a large walk in shower. We absolutely loved it and it's on our return to list. The only comment we have is that maybe a shelf in the shower to put the shampoo and shower gel on? But that was literally it, and not much of a problem for 2 nights.
- louise (7/5): Ruswarp hall - The staff were very friendly and let us have plates and butter knife so we could eat our food in our room.
The room was nice though and very clean. I messaged asking for a room with a bath, but unknowingly to me, a room with a bath was an upgraded room for an extra £80.
The staff didn't message me back to confirm about this so when I enquired on my arrival (as previously at other properties with baths I have been given a room with a bath when I have asked) I was told it wasnt possible unless i paid extra,
I was left disappointed as I was looking forward to my bath after a long day walking.
If they had of told me this, prior to my arrival, I wouldn't have been so disappointed on arrival.
As the photograph showed a bath, I was really hoping to have a bath in our room.
- Paul (10/5): -
- Jennifer (9/5): Excellent stay and service - Extremely clean and lovely style Nothing
- rach (9/5): - Good location, loved our junior suite, we had a free standing bath which I loved, really liked the bedroom was separate from a living area with settee , chair tv and coffee facilities, nice bathroom with a really good shower too if we needed more coffee, teas or toilet rolls there were some on landing to help ourselves, liked the mini bar downstairs to help ourselves just had to write down our room number and what we had and pay when we were leaving, the woman behind desk was really nice and helpful ordered a taxi for us to go into the town as we had a table book for a meal
Parking on site too.. Nothing to dislike as we really enjoyed our stay would definitely stay there again..
- Ross (10/5): - Very clean and well kept. Car park is a little tight and needs a sign outside to tell you it's the place
- David (9/5): Gorgeous historical guest house - Really nice historical building , very clean with good facilities mixed with traditional historical architecture , really friendly helpful staff Nothing really
- Hunter (9/5): -
- Graeme (8/5): Very relaxing - Room was very large and comfortable Could have been better signposted from the outside drove past it without realising a couple of times
- Angela (10/5): - Everything, we couldn't find a fault.
- Ward (10/5): - Lovely place. Friendly staff. Very spacious and clean room and decorated to a high standard. Nice to not be tied to meal times like a hotel even though you have to go out for food but they do offer a continental breakfast
- Jane (9/5): -
- Nicola (10/5): -
- Leeza (10/5): -
- Tracey (2/5): - We had to leave before the breakfast was served We didn’t like that there wasn’t any staff on the premises overnight
- Dennis (8/5): Good priced B&B in a lovely village setting with walking distance to places to eat. - Never had breakfast as leaving early.
Good car park in front of property with walled entrance off main road.
Excellent location in village close to walking distance of places to eat and both the river and station.
Some may say place is a bit dated but that adds to the patina of the place along with its grand stairway and large windows in the room.
Host greeted us on arrival and even carried my wife's case upstairs. Room was bright and nicely laid out, no clutter. The bed was extra comfy which gave a great night's sleep and the en suite was very clean with a good powerful shower.
Compliment tray was very generous, plenty tea, coffee etc but amazingly hot chocolate sachets which made my wife's day. Bonus also having mugs not little cups. There were more supplies of sachets etc in a sideboard on the main landing, a bonus if you used up the rooms supply.
Host explained everything handed over key (which locked room and front door) then left us to it. TV in room needs to be more central so as to view better from the nice sofa.
Little bit of sound through walls.
Photos used on advertising make the Hall look bigger, l went driving past it at first.
- Kelly (9/5): -
- Silvana (10/5): A fabulous and delightful unexpected treasure - Location was perfect. Hotel was an unexpected treasure and pleasure to be in Very minor thing but I didn't see any signage that the building was the hotel. It didn't stop us from finding the place straight away...thanks to sat nav
- Julie (10/5): Very welcoming and comfortable. - Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely surroundings and gardens. N/A
- William (8/5): - Experiencing a building with over 400 years of history, only trouble is they do tend to show their age in little areas!! Nothing to dislike, felt it would have much more appeal on a warm summers evening being able to enjoy sitting in the beautiful rear garden!
- Edwina (8/5): -
- Ren (9/5): Great to stay for a weekend in Whitby - Lovely property with a very comfortable room. Easy to walk into Whitby as the path is right next to the building and links with The Cinder Track. The only things that would make the room more user-friendly is for the shower to have a shelf, the bathroom to have a shelf near the sink and for the bathroom to have a toilet brush.
- David (9/5): -
- Trevor (6/5): Friendly and pleasant stay the photos make the hall grand and bigger then it is also the continental breakfast was over - Friendly and clean and not far from Whitby The photos made it look more grand then it was
- Yue (10/5): Great value for money - Perfect value for money!
Spacious and quirky room, beautiful view, warm radiator, good location to walk to Whitby. Nothing
- Mike (10/5): -
- carl (10/5): - Large spacious room. Quiet and peaceful night.
Hot shower with good strong pressure.
- Valerie (5/5): Disappointing stay more a bed and breakfast ( only continental) not a hotel - Staff were friendly Very noisy room not double glazed so road noise til late and started 3am.
Toilet was dirty
Found the bed uncomfortable
- Gerard (9/5): -
- Pinkney (10/5): Relaxing and met all my needs - Room, size and set up. Bathroom size.comfy be Breakfast included in price
- kenneth (10/5): A fantastic building with great staff. Exceptional breakfast and overall good value for money. - A fantastic building ..... like visiting an historic Country House! Staff were exceptional and made our stay really special.
Breakfast was buffet, very good with wide choice of options, Exceptional value for money. Nothing ..... all good!
- bryan (10/5): - Location of the hotel was central to Ruswarp, we were very well looked after, room was spotless as was all the hotel. We never had breakfast as we had to leave early in the morning. Highly recommended! Nothing to dislike!
