- X2519GEdeborahd (10/5): Fabulous quirky hotel - We had a fabulous overnight stay at this quirky hotel that is full of history. You are greeted by a friendly host, Rob who is on hand to do all he can to assist. There are many interesting artefacts and framed pictures from the past. As well as the above, the rooms are beautiful and very tastefully decorated according to the period. The huge bed is very comfy, perfect for a good night's rest. Breakfast is excellent served in a lovely dining area. All of this and you are in a perfection location in the heart of Matlock Bath, close to pubs, restaurants and perfect fish and chips. Car park is free for guests. Cannot recommend highly enough! Excellent value!
- 311davinal (10/5): Highly recommended - Brilliant visit! Rob is a fantastic host and a great tour guide of the caves behind the hotel. The room was warm and cosy with a very comfy bed. Breakfast was delicious with fantastic quality bacon and sausages. I would highly recommend this hotel, it’s full of unique charm you won’t find elsewhere with an amazing history. Thank you Rob l!
- chriswT2896OS (10/5): Beautiful building and room 10/10 breakfast 10/10 host - Pre Christmas one night stay, while visiting Chatsworth, welcomed by super friendly host, period room with quality fixtures and fittings, very clean and solid for an old building, my wife described it as “The best room she’d ever stayed in” everything worked as it should, lovely and cosy with a great vibe, great bathroom quality shower, quality products with great towels and robes, perfect nights sleep, bed comfy and no noise, full cooked breakfast absolutely 10/10 host is genuinely passionate about where he sources his produce, evening meal at “The Fishpond” recommended by host, again 10/10, all in all can not fault this place, will be back soon
- Harp-Scarlet (10/5): Beautiful stay. - Brilliant stay, cannot wait to go back. The owner was so friendly. He has recently taken over so was telling us about the cave complex and tunnels they had just found. Very interesting. Lovely old room. Smelt lovely and clean. The breakfast was amazing! Very nice. I will be going back and recommending to all my family.
- CraigandJade (10/5): Incredible unique hotel - A really warm welcome on arrival with a fresh coffee made for us. The room was so comfortable and peaceful. The hotel is truly stunning and unique. An absolute time capsule. The bed was incredibly comfy with excellent quality pillows. Spotlessly clean. Extra tea, coffee etc on landing should you run out. Breakfast was first class, cooked to perfection and plentiful. First time we have stopped here and it will not be the last. The new owners have only been there for a few weeks, but everything was perfect. The restaurant will be opened up again in the coming months, and we wish them the best of luck. We had such a great stay, happy memories made.

Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing hosts- including a very warm welcome when we arrived super late at night due to car trouble! Fantastic breakfast and great room with the perfect view of Matlock Bath from two viewpoints! A lovely quirky hotel in the perfect location.
- josiep998 (10/5): Absolute gem of a hotel - We spent a lovely night at this hotel last night, and were really sad to leave. The welcome we received was very friendly and genuine. The owner made us a fresh coffee to take up to the room despite there also being plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits in the room already. There are a lot of stairs up to the rooms, but we didn't mind as on each landing, and in each little alcove there were dressers or shelves with interesting characterful ornaments and decorations. I could have spent an hour just enjoying taking in the decor. Some of the doors, stained glass windows, and lamps are beautiful. I real gem of a find, and it will definitely be our hotel of choice from now on when we stay in Matlock Bath. If you stay for bed and breakfast here, make sure you are hungry. The portions are very generous and delicious.
- travelhants (6/5): Lovely owners but wouldn’t return - Positives: Owners were wonderful and clearly care a lot. Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order - a real bonus of this place and deserving of praise. Room was clean and large with some very pretty furniture and touches. Nice views. Interesting history with a cave aspect. Lots of fascinating curios the owners have collected, almost museum like. Negatives: This is difficult as the owners were so nice, but there were a lot of issues. Shower was coming off the wall and large water leak marks. Toilet didn’t flush properly. Wardrobe too small to hang a shirt and close the door. Very uneven floor. Significant number of stairs which we don’t mind but no warning of this and if we’d brought relatives with even minor mobility issues it would have been unusable. Also slippery carpet on stairs, slipped even wearing trainers going slowly. Parking up very steep hill and can be incredibly tight. Matlock Bath is also an interesting place, like a seaside pier (about 7 fish and chip shops in a row and large arcade and little else), without the sea. We strongly considered moving hotels even though it would have meant paying twice. It could be much better place with some changes. We had friends who stayed here and also said wouldn’t return. We feel bad leaving this as the owners were so nice, but we’re surprised by the high reviews and feel it’s fair to let others know.

- carolegA9248OL (10/5): Matlock Bath illuminations - What a little gem this place is both ourselves and the other couple we went with said it was a lovely hotel steeped in history along with Neil the host being a perfect host, and going on the breakfast he is also a great cook as it was the best full English breakfast , hotel was clean perfect location and the honesty bar was a lovely touch thanks for a lovely stay and iam sure we will be back Thankyou again

- P8939UBzoeh (10/5): Overnight couples stay Matlock bath - Lovely hotel . Stayed twice now . This visit we stayed in callow , love the old fashioned room key. Beautiful and clean. Breakfast was fantastic, pre order the night before , plenty to choose from. Parking included. Right in the centre of Matlock bath, within short walking distance of local attractions including Heights of Abraham and Matlock bath boats.

- Elaine (10/5): Great hotel, location and staff - The hotel is in a lovely building, retaining original features with the café area displaying some original items such as the cash register from 1882. The room key is also a traditional type which I liked. The room had a lovely original fireplace and very comfy bed. The pillows were so comfy I checked the label so I could get some for home. The breakfast was great, all good quality ingredients and well cooked. The scrambled egg was especially delicious! The hotel has parking spaces available at the top of the hill next to the hotel. Note the hill is quite steep and may not be walkable for people who are less mobile, however there is also parking on the main street. The hotel is in the middle of the main street and easily walkable to the main attractions, shops, bars and restaurants.
- Mr (10/5): Marvelous Matlock - Great greeting on arrival. Room was clean and comfortable. Great power shower. Super nights sleep. Excellent hearty breakfast.good location central to all shops amusement arcades and public houses. Definitely would stay again
- Andy (8/5): Nice. No complaints - Nice place, pleasant people. Food was good, car park is about 100 yards up the road which is really steep! One space for each room though so can always get parked even if it is a bit tight. Room was big and comfortable. Only thing I would offer as a bit of constructive criticism is that the breakfast room needed some music. It was too quiet which makes for an awkward silence when there’s several tables.
- Nicki (8/5): Nice old fashioned hotel, but dont get there early - Room lovely. Bin in bathroom had something on the top of it so didnt use it as hadnt been cleaned. Lovely drinks assortment in room. Cafe was closed in hotel thought didnt know until after arrived and couldnt use back garden as per advertised online as they said overgrown. Had to wait outside until check in time passed with other disgruntled guests. Lovely breakfast though, but was (5 mins) early for allocated first time slot booked

- SCGoring (10/5): Perfect! - This is the most beautiful, quirky hotel in a perfect location for seeing the area as well as a being able to completely relax. We have just stayed in Mayfield room, beautifully decorated and so comfortable. Service was impeccable and the lady and gentleman that run it cannot do enough for you. Breakfast is lovely, an honesty bar in the evening and all little touches like extra water that make this place perfect for a lovely getaway. We will definitely be back!

- Samantha (10/5): - It was our 19th wedding anniversary and a last minute booking. I couldn’t fault the hosts despite their upset with renovations not complete before our arrival. This was no fault of their own. The room was perfect. Very clean and the attention to detail was greatly received . The period features that was so fitting to a period property was very well presented.

- Chrish466 (10/5): May bank holiday away. - Arrived early and was greeted with a smile by Sue and Neil who were very accommodating. We had a lunch as it runs a cafe during the day, which was spot on. Our Room was on the 2nd floor which included tea, coffee biscuits and bottled water, and robes. Comfy bed we had the caulk room. Breakfast in the morning was fresh and cooked lovely all fresh ingredient's which there is a good choice, you can choose what time you want breakfast as well between 8-9.30am. Both Sue and Neil we found were friendly and appreciated there customers, nothing was too much trouble they advised good eating places locally which you could walk too. All in all a fantastic weekend we are just home and tucking into the Bakewell tart my wife purchased from the Hotel 10/10 Thank you Sue and Neil for a lovely stay will certainly recommend. Ps let us know when your in Norfolk and you can call in for a cuppa xx. All the best Chris & Sarah.

- patwhitco (10/5): Absolute gem of a hotel and amazing hosts! - this place was such a gem. Starting with the hosts who will just do anything for you and are so warm and welcoming. The rooms were clean and tidy and so comfy! Little extras are left in the corridor, water, tea etc. which is so rare these days. Breakfast was among the best quality, superbly cooked every day and again, hosts so accommodating. Perfectly situated in the town for access and parking made it so easy to come and go. We will 100% be coming back!!

- Lindyann2013 (10/5): Great stay - We stayed here for a short break, the hotel is more of a boutique hotel, 7 rooms, we had Riber room on the top floor with a four poster bed. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, amazing breakfast, you choose from a menu the night before. The hotel is a grade ll listed building with lots of antique features, quite quirky but comfortable and welcoming.
- 918andyj (10/5): Great find - We stayed here for two nights with friends and found it to be an ideal location, and the hosts, Sue and Neil, were really friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast was super, really well presented and good quality food. The hotel is an old townhouse, so it is a little quirky, but the room we had was lovely and the bed was really comfortable, the shower cubicle was a little on the small side for me but other than that it was perfect.

- Valerie (10/5): - Loved the decor of the hotel, we stayed in Calke room. Hotel chosen as situated within easy walk to Heights of Abraham event we'd booked. The hotel's Restaurant wasnt fully operational but this is shown on their website. Some hot food was available though Fri & Sat evening and we had very tasty meals. But there are loads of other eateries nearby. Good choices for breakfast as well. All in all we had great weekend with lots to do in the area. We enjoyed the live music at Fish Pond pub short walk along the road also. Would strongly recommend.
- 886jayneh (10/5): Not the same as before but would go again - This was our 4th stay at Hodgkinson and wasn't aware it had changed hands. The hotel was still beautiful with its stunning rooms, immaculately clean, totally equipped and with an amazing fresh breakfast. We were late arriving and found the self check in for late arrivals uninviting & impersonal. Guests invoices with room keys just left in the entrance for you to see what each of you have paid. If you want to leave a receipt pop it in an envelope. Whilst there are afternoon teas, pizza & snacks available during the day we were disappointed to see that the evening dining has been stopped, as we was looking forward to booking dinner and a cosy evening in the relaxing dining area and moving onto the front room with comfy sofas & open fire, which have been replaced by wooden tables & chairs. The bar would be open on an evening but now shut forcing you to go out, which defeats the object of staying in a hotel. All that said, we would return as the place is still beautiful with loads of character and the new management & staff are all very helpful, nothing is too much trouble and it's clear to see they all go above & beyond with a smile.
- Lorraine Angela (10/5): - Travelled as a couple on weekend break for Matlock illuminations. Hotel has an excellent location, parking(although up a very steep if short incline). It’s an old building, so floors bit uneven but decorated in accordance with its period, so beautiful if that’s your thing as it was ours. If you want the sameness offered by a Hilton, then go to one, this hotel is unique, you can see it immortalised on photos we saw in the Heights of Abraham exhibition from the 1800/1900’s . We had a fabulous stay, staff were lovely, welcoming and their evening menu was delicious, as was breakfast. We will be coming back. Still so much to see in the Derbyshire area, so why not stay here.

- miceracs (10/5): Great Hotel and location. - Arrived at this hotel with no booking, as refused to stay at booked hotel (High Tor) not far away. Unfortunately, they only had vacancy for one night when we wanted 2 nights. but, never mind getting late and staff were excellent to accommodate us. Its a lovely victorian hotel, class II protected, with many victorian features. Liked it so much we we have already booked a 2 night stay again next year. Another bonus, they have private free parking on site.

- poolehornet (10/5): Absolutely love this hotel - I have to say that having stayed in hundreds of hotels with my wife all over the world this hotel must be the most quirky and unique place we have ever stayed in. It's like going back to Victorian times as the hotel has managed with great effect maintained the place as how it used to be with a modern twist. Our room Eyam on an upper floor facing the high street is great. Although lots of stairs, no lift. It's like stepping back in time with all original features. It's like staying in a museum from a bye gone age. There is secondary double glazing but the room is still a bit noisy from road traffic, so ask for an upper room. We loved ours. Plenty of tea and coffee, comfortable bed,comfy pillows Clean and tidy room and bathroom with a great shower even though the cubicle is a bit small. Fantastic pre ordered breakfast too. Small carpark up a steep hill so bear that in mind. Drop cases off first. Spaces for 7 cars. Would we recommend this hotel Definitely 👍🏻😊💥
- penelope (10/5): - The hotel is full of character. The room “Calke” was small but absolutely perfect for us. Being at the back of the property it was very quiet even on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Breakfast was excellent, with loads of choices. Amelia, the receptionist/manager was delightful, helpful and cheerful in every way. In fact all the staff were wonderful. We’d absolutely return.
- 671jaynef (10/5): Brilliant Hotel Centre of Matlock Bath - Returned today from this fab hotel...quirky rooms with great facilties....very clean and well kept..hot shower...comfy bed and pillows... Breakfast area and reception very nice ...great choice of breakfast and beautifully cooked...Centre of Matlock Bath, ideal...I could go on forever about this hotel. Try it ...we will most definetly be back ..Thank you to all the lovely staff

Was a warm day so we had cold drinks and was quick service and no rush to leave, very relaxing. A must try place. Seating outside and dog friendly in and out, and they even get a biscuit

- AnnMaryA1 (10/5): A great few days - This is a small unique hotel. It's a Victorian townhouse, furnished in appropriate style. It's like a homely museum. It's on the main road, but has amazing double glazing so the rooms are quiet for a comfortable night's sleep. The staff are lovely, the breakfasts great, if you would like to try a hotel that is different, do try Hodgkinson's Hotel.
- Ann (8/5): - Loved the old building, our room, the friendly helpfulness of the staff..Also, the convenience of the location. A little disappointed that TV in room didn't work despite our re-tuning. It seemed to be an aerial problem. Additionally one of bedside lights wouldn't come on. These are not complaints just observations so that they can be put right for next room occupant. We did report them at the end of our stay.

- Verified traveler (10/5): Always friendly and comfortable - Whenever I say at Hodgkinson's it is very welcoming - the hosts are very friendly and the breakfasts are all you could wish for - with lots of choice. There are great views of the life along the Matlock Bath road but the rooms are double glazed so not noisy. Tea/coffee in the rooms along with water and a very decent price. - Always clean.

Ideally situated in Matlock Bath this charming property not only has superb accommodation but also the most amazing staff. Breakfast is freshly prepared to order and served by happy, smiling people. Highly recommended - and for a special occasion this is just the place to be. Loved it.

The high street can get busy but the rooms are nice and quiet, no problems with getting a good night's rest. Parking is up the hill, one per room. The staff is absolutely fantastic. Really nice people, making sure you've got everything you need. Food was OK. We really liked the vibe of this hotel, not your standard decor, but absolutely amazing! We will be back. Highly recommend the Eyam room.
- andrewcI4553CT (10/5): Quality Service and Refreshments - We had a stop off in the Cave Cafe which is part of the Hotel and what a fantastic experience it was. From the warm friendly greeting when we arrived to the thank you and goodbye when we left, everything was faultless. There were 6 of us all having “tea and cake”. One needed to be gluten free and another dairy free and they were both catered for with ease. It’s a while since I’ve been to a café that had linen tablecloths and proper cup and saucers which all added to the experience (I’m a bit old fashioned). There were no complaints about the cakes, teas and coffees and nothing but compliments about the service. We would love to come back and experience the hotel, as well as spend a bit more time exploring the area. This experience was a ray of sunshine on what was otherwise a damp and miserable Sunday.

- jackiemS1375DD (10/5): Lovely cafe Tearoom - We visited on a Sunday with friends. We had a lovely warm welcome from Neil as we were searching for a place to have coffee and a cake. Nothing was too much trouble. The cave cafe had a delicious selection of cakes, they even had a vegan flap jack for me as I am dairy intolerant. The scones jam and clotted cream were delicious as was the lemon cake. Highly recommend all round. We had a very relaxed catch up in this authentic nostalgic tearoom. A perfect end to our weekend away in Matlock Bath.

- Terry (10/5): - Very nice hotel and welcoming staff would definitely stay here again. surrounding area is good for walkers. Lots of fish bars and cafes but no convenience store spar co-op etc however matlock is 2 minutes away by train. Not a cheap area to eat out but where is nowadays.

The interior decor is so museum like but at the same time homely. The heating came home at the right times so we never felt cold. The different types of breakfasts we had both mornings were faultless and served by attentive and friendly staff. The hotel itself is situated ideally for the shops cafes and not forgetting the Arcades. I recomend this place to anybody who wants a quiet break. We are already planning our return in a few months time. Thankyou to all the staff of The Hodgkinsons hotel.

- HotelReviewer1877 (2/5): Pay us for a key, thats all you get - Staff book you in at 3pm ask for your breakfast list and take your money - advanced payment. No bar No restaurant. room was on third floor no offer of help to get bags there. On entering the room all looked good BUT 1 sheet of toilet roll led to a phone call, which has to be made by your mobile as there are no working phones in the room. Leaving a message on the answering machine! Had a bath to see there was 1 robe provided for 2 people!! We had a massive key to take out that night and the next morning at breakfast after stating on the form what we wanted was served with 3 slices of toasts. We had asked for 3 for me and 2 for my wife. When we got the attention of staff warm bread was brought to us after we had finished breakfast! No point in the form. Staff leave at 6pm and come back in to make breakfast its as friendly as a morgue will not be returning. £150 for the night!!
- GemZ77 (10/5): Quirky and Authentic - Stayed one night at the beginning of April. The hotel is really well situated in the centre of Matlock Bath, and the free parking is a real bonus. Communication with the hotel on the morning of our arrival was good - they sent over the code to the front door so that we could use the facilities after our journey. A couple of hours later our room key was ready for us and left at the bar. We had booked the smallest room and this was ample for our needs. It was immaculate and extremely comfortable - had a great night's sleep! The room had everything we needed - hairdryer, tv, local information etc, and a handy plug in radiator as it was a little chilly! The whole hotel is full of character, there are display cabinets full of interesting objects and authentic memorabilia on the walls; it is almost a museum in its own right! Our stay included breakfast, which was ordered from a tick sheet in the room and then cooked to order. The cooked breakfast was excellent, fresh and piping hot. We visited all the attractions in Matlock Bath and it was great to see the hotel on old black and white photos in the various exhibitions we went to. Our stay enhanced our understanding of the history of the area. Highly recommended!

The breakfast is plentiful and cooked fresh to order. The staff are friendly. Unfortunately the bar and restaurant were closed but it did not spoil our stay.

- Verified traveler (10/5): Enjoyable stay. - Stayed for 2 nights. Small hotel with good friendly service. Staff happy to help with queries. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. I've found other hotels have removed or reduced daily housekeeping, but that's not the case here, high standards of cleanliness are maintained in the hotel and room. The hotel has a cosy feel with lots of character throughout the hotel, adding to the the overall experience.

The guest lounge felt like being at home and the bar was really reasonable. Breakfast made to your order and all fresh and delicious. Room was very clean and comfortable with great facilities The owners and small team of staff were all really friendly and helpful. Great location for the illuminations (just the other side of the river) and no better place to watch the end of evening fireworks - sofa in the guest lounge with a drink and the fireworks directly opposite. Short walk to the heights of Abraham . Matlock Bath is a lovely place to visit and Hodgkinson’s is the place to stay
