Guest Reviews
L’onsen molto piacevole e rilassante.
- Marta Maria (10/5): amazing place and amazing food! - the property is very well located, central yet in a very quiet place- it has plenty of charme, love the traditional ryokan style, yet very well maintained. you can see trees from the windows and it’s super peaceful. the staff is super kind and helpful and the food is outstanding! the chef cooks with only local and seasonal ingredients- everything delicious!
- Shannon (6/5): Disappointing, as I am now dealing with a sore throat, post nasel drip- and it is hindering the rest of my trip. Please - It was traditional. It had a very musty smell and I should have left immediately but I did not want to be rude and had already paid and it isn’t inexpensive. I woke up with a severe reaction to the mold and mildew and feel there should be a disclaimer- had I known I would not have booked.
- Rachel (10/5): -
- Karlijn (10/5): Hoogtepunt van onze reis in Japan - Waanzinnige locatie, super authentieke ervaring en heel vriendelijk personeel
- Sofia Yukari (8/5): -
- Ben (10/5): Interesting experiece with exceptional food - The Kaiseki evening meal was exceptional An extra pillow would be good although I am being really picky as I wasn't bothered enough to ask for one
- Scarlett (9/5): -
- Dan (10/5): Unparalleled - Nagataki does an exceptional job at making you feel like you've gone back in time to Edo era Japan. Their gardens and accommodations are timely, their onsen is exceptional and the food was remarkable. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The price is steep but comparable to similar products in the area for what you are trying to capture. Worth every yen.
- Alona (10/5): Simply magical! - Wow, what a magical place!
I stayed for one night before doing a portion of the nakasendo trail. Everything was absolutely perfect! They picked me up with a shuttle from Nakatsugawa station and dropped me off in Magome the following morning for the trail.
This is a traditional Japanese Ryokan experience and I can’t explain how wonderful everything was.
The service was superb, the Onsen was wonderful, and the food was absolutely delicious and there was so much of if!
I enjoyed every minute, highly highly recommend!
- Wolf (10/5): Most amazing stay in a ryokan that resembles heaven. Highlight of our trip. - This was the most amazing Ryokan you can imagine. Houses of 400 years old, in an amazing garden, with an onsen (shared) you can use - you cannot imagine in what kind of paradise this ryokan is located.
Highlight of our trip.
- Johanna (10/5): -
- Jacob (9/5): Great place for a quiet stay - Very peaceful and nice place to stay. Property is outside of Nakatsugawa, and transportation to and from the train station was provided. Dinner and breakfast were great! House was comfortable and the public bath was very nice. Very quiet place.
- Abigail (10/5): - I stayed at 5 accommodations along the Nakasendo trail and this one was far and away the best! The hospitality, food, location, serenity, all of it. I wish I had stayed longer.
- Anita (10/5): -
- Roya (10/5): Amazing memorable stay, highly recommended - Beautiful old traditional Ryokan, in a beautiful Japanese garden setting. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. The host and staff went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. Nothing
- Emily (10/5): This was a wonderful experience. - The property was amazing. There were beautiful trees and flowers on property. You can see the care in all of the landscaping. Nagataki is very authentic. It feels like old Japan as though you are stepping back in time. The staff are extremely attentive. The food was amazing. We got tucked in with clean, comfortable duvets and hot water bottles. I cannot recommend this place enough if you want a relaxing and peaceful escape. Not a thing.
- WanYu (10/5): - 1.
- Lesley (10/5): -
- Axel (10/5): - Authentic, clean, quiet, comfortable
- Joshua (10/5): Een absolute aanrader. - Geweldige ervaring in een prachtige traditionele setting, enorm behulpzaam personeel.
- Alvin (8/5): -
- Rachel (10/5): - It is beyond beautiful and peaceful and now a requirement for when I visit. I was lucky enough to find it last year and I made certain I came again this year. The staff are amazing and the best meals made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. They make you feel special and amazingly taken care of. Beautiful, peaceful, clean, and amazing kindness
- Ann (10/5): Unforgettable experience - We love how quiet the location is. The autumn leaves were also amazing to see. The chef and the staff were very nice and made us feel very comfortable. The food was exquisite and very memorable. They also made the place cost and warm as the temperature gets colder.
- Marco (10/5): Esperienza unica, ti lascia senza parole.
- Urszula (10/5): Amazing value and incredible service - Nagataki was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The hotel arranged a taxi service from the station, which was incredibly helpful and made our arrival completely stress-free.
The moment we stepped onto the property, we felt like we had traveled back in time. The houses are beautifully preserved and full of character, with details that make you slow down and appreciate the craftsmanship. Walking through the grounds felt like being inside a living piece of history, yet everything was impeccably maintained and comfortable.
Dinner and breakfast were absolutely incredible. Each meal was prepared with so much care, and every dish felt thoughtful and balanced. It was one of those rare dining experiences where you’re reminded of how special traditional Japanese cuisine can be when done with genuine skill and passion.
What truly made our stay exceptional, though, was the service. Every staff member we interacted with was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. They made us feel welcomed in a way that felt heartfelt rather than formal, and their hospitality elevated the entire stay.
Staying at Nagataki was peaceful, memorable, and deeply charming — the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave. Thank you, Yoshida-san and the Team! I think a cozier lighting would make our evening better! The lamps are a bit too bright and have cold colour. A small lamp in the corner with warm lightbulb would make this an even better experience.
- Andrew (10/5): Fantastic ryokan experience! - Wonderful hospitality and beautiful grounds. Truly a fantastic experience all around. The staff were so kind and both breakfast and dinner were delicious!
- Bernadette (10/5): Ein tolles Erlebnis, sehr empfehlenswert!
- Harshvardhan (10/5): Amazing place, great hospitality, loved everything - Great hospitality, lovely place, staff is amazing. Food is just superb. Loved everything about this place
- Yin Peng (8/5): -
- Marlo (9/5): Unique and highly recommend. - The staff were so lovely. The experience was very unique. Gardens were beautifully maintained. Clean but traditional. Generous quantities of food and a very lovely dining experience. . All the services such as the bus pick up etc very appreciated. The beds are traditional as are pillows but not super comfortable.
- Carmen (9/5): Stunning place - Beautiful, historic, traditional accommodation surrounded by gardens, staying in individual houses with their own dining room and bathroom. Just stunningly authentic. There was a shuttle bus to Nakatsugawa station in the morning. Dinner and breakfast are included and served in you own traditional villa. An experience from start to finish. Beautiful food, plentiful and delicious. Stunning place! We loved it all !
- Elizabeth (10/5): EXCEPTIONAL IN EVERY WAY. - EXCEPTIONAL!!!
Staff were extremely helpful
Environment was amazing. Wonderful to stay in a traditional home. Bed very comfortable. Onsen lovely. Food OUTSTANDING. Thank you for a fabulous stay and also for picking me up from the station, assisting with transport to the start of my hike and with luggage transfer to my next accomodation. A very special place and team. I loved ALL of it!
- Tamara (10/5): Wonderful and highly recommended - We had an incredible time here.
Exceptional food, beautiful surroundings and everyone was incredibly welcoming and kind.
The onsen was also lovely.
- Josu (10/5): MAGICAL RYONKAN EXPERIENCE - Everything. Staying in a +200 yo Ryonkan was a magical experience for us. The atmosphere felt really authentic, and the dining experiences were truly exceptional thanks to cheff Mr. Yoshida.
- Soares (10/5): Uma experiência incrível, do início ao fim! - Tudo!
- Judit (10/5): L’experiència general ha sigut molt bona - L’experiència general
- Elke (6/5): -
Smuk have.
- Chrysanthi Ka (7/5): a taste of traditional japan - We felt truly welcomed by the owners, who were thoughtful, kind, and attentive. It is a must to stay in a traditional ryokan while visiting Japan. We travel as a family with a baby and they were kind to provide crib for us. The breakfast and dinner that they serve is definitely the closest you can get for local experience, spending a lot of effort to provide a versatile and high quality menu, different per day (breakfast and dinner). Might be nice to stay 3 nights. With just two nights, our schedule felt a bit rushed: Day 1: Check-in, unpacking a bit, dinner. Day 2: Breakfast, visit to Magome & Tsumago, dinner, packing. Day 3: Departure. An extra day would have allowed us to slow down and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere more fully. The price seemed to us a bit high. On top of that, you were being asked to have some drinks during dinner (dinner was included in the price) and we got charged in the end. While the extra charges were minimal (less than 3% of the total), at this price point—around 300 per night—it would have been nice if a drink or two during dinner were complimentary. Additionally, the place is an old traditional house 400 years old, according to the owners, in a quite decent state. However, some further refurbishment could have taken place, maintaining the aesthetic and the typology of the traditional japanese architecture.
- Alexey (10/5): -
- Dawes (10/5): - Amazing, authentic experience with incredible food.
- Andrews (9/5): -
- Ruben (9/5): -
- Oskari (10/5): -
- Suzanne (10/5): Exceptional experience! - Beautiful! This is an enclosed property and feels very private. This is a true Ryokan experience! Chika taught us how to put on our kimono, which was included. We had our own private onsen, which was also really fun. Breakfast and dinner were included as well and the chef went above and beyond to accommodate our daughter’s gluten allergy - with no advance notice! The most incredible aspect, and what we will remember most, is the wonderful staff. Every single one of them was incredibly gracious, kind, attentive, responsive, helpful and accommodating. We left there understanding that Japan is a very special place and that the Japanese people are very special people. We will cherish these memories forever! Nothing
- Cynthia (10/5): Unique and authentic ryokan in a beautiful location. - Wonderful unique experience on a historical property. Delicious meals. Excellent service. Authentic and rustic ambience. Beautiful grounds. Comforting onsen. Altogether a memorable experience. Website for property could be better, difficult to find and get details on the property. We would not have found it without Abroad in Japan feature. Glad we did!
- Lawrence (10/5): - The staff were very sweet and reverent for the process and classic structures. The onsen was clean and delightful, and the sliding windows and wooded view was epic! Some travelers may find it too rustic, but we loved it.
- Jenna (10/5): Amazing, highly recommended! - We had an amazing experience here. The food was incredible, the staff really attentive and helpful, the rooms were beautiful and well equipped.
For a foreigner in Japan, it was really special to experience such an authentic Japanese Inn. Nothing.
- Ludovica (10/5): Masayama was an excellent and very accommodating host and chef! We had a wonderful time in a space that allows you to sl - Outstandingly beautiful setting bringing you back in time. The rooms were spacious and authentic. Very tasty food and excellent service Nothing
- Wies (9/5): -
- Munro (10/5): - The property is located a little away from the centre of Nakatsugawa but it’s the perfect location. Your small home is nestled amongst the Japanese maple trees and can hear the river rushing below. The house itself is over a 100 years old but with a new bathroom facility which is convenient and comfortable. The staff go above and beyond in terms of their service, and the food is exceptional. They provide a shuttle service which is very helpful and convenient as well. We would say this is one of our favourite places we stayed at in Japan and will most definitely return!
- Nanci (9/5): Really friendly people and a delightful dinner in a beautiful, traditional place. - The beds are a bit difficult for us.
- michal (9/5): -
- Lowe-Silivestru (9/5): A lovely experience. - We were hiking a part of the Old Nakasendo Trail and looking for a simple for a traditional ryokan experience and this was perfect. We had our own house over looking the mountains. Our house was over 200 years old. We were served a traditional dinner and breakfast, which was included fro the price and very reasonable. The onsen was small but lovely and was my favourite part. You can open the window and feel like you were outside. We drove there, which made it easy to get to and they had parking. There did not seem to be anything close by to really walk to.
- Agnes (10/5): Amazing ryokan stay! - It’s a lovely ryokan. The grounds were so beautifully kept. Dinner was an exquisite 8 course meal.
- Samantha (9/5): -
- Will (10/5): Best place I have ever stayed - Best place I have ever stayed Nothing - it was amazing
- Joanne (9/5): -
- Irenie (10/5): - Meals
- HUGO (10/5): -
- Paco (10/5): -
- Tal (10/5): - Amazing 200 hundrad years old property run by family.
Dinner and breakfast were the best we had so far in Japan. They also offered for me a vegeterian option which was great.
They offer free shuttle bus to the train station as well as to Nakasandu trail.
The room had beautiful garden view.
Onsen small and with beautiful view.
i highly recommend!
- Erin (10/5): This is a beautiful, traditional space that has been made very comfortable for guests. We loved it. - hosts were great, food was top notch, the grounds and house were historic but had all the modern conveniences we needed.

- Logan (10/5): Best accommodation ever - The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the accommodation was beautiful and peaceful. We felt very relaxed as soon as we got to the property. Best accommodation we've ever stayed in, I would recommend this place to anyone, we had a wonderful time.
- karen (10/5): Most amazing experience. Wonderful accomodation, amazing food and the most friendly and accomodating staff. An unforget - Very authentic, comfortable and beautiful surroundings Nothing
- Camilo (9/5): -
- Xiao Fei (9/5): -
