Guest Reviews
- Deborah (8/5): - The hotel and staff were really good. The only disappointment for me was the quality of the bed/Mattress. I didn’t sleep well and my back was painful.
- Justen (8/5): - Overall was generally clean, though a couple stains on the carpet and bench. Not a bad location, but not amazing. Good food nearby. Was on the 6 floor and when they cleaned the rooms, the hallways smelled wet and like mildew with all the sheets piled in the hall. The blinds did nothing to keep out the light, so I needed to wear a sleep mask. I would stay again but I’d probably look at other options first.
- Joseph (10/5): - Hotel is in walking distance from the Kyoto Metro stations and the Nijo Castle. Japanese style breakfast is served each morning.
- Catherine (10/5): - This is a great little hotel near walkable sites. But a bit of a walk to a train station, about 15min. Clean and comfortable room but the bed was rock hard, possibly the hardest I’ve ever slept on. Also the breakfast was traditional Japanese every morning with no other options. And you could sometimes smell smoke from the smoking room at the back. I would stay again. Lovely staff.
- Alireza (2/5): - Far from Tokyo station takes 30 min bus or 30 min walk to station ready bad breakfast you cant chose what to eat
- Karthik Reddy (4/5): - Priced high for a room that wasn't worth the service or amenities or breakfast that was provided..
- David Kenneth (10/5): - Loved it
- Alba (8/5): - The room was small and the beds aren’t the most comfortable. Staff was nice and friendly. Location is the biggest highlight being very close to the castle and with tons of options for transportation.
- Geert (10/5): - Recommended, friendly staff, comfortable room.
- Mathilde (10/5): - I stayed in Hedistar hotel for two weeks and have nothing to complain about : the room is very clean, modern and we sleep well in it.
- Naim (10/5): - My stay was excellent – the staff were warm and attentive, the room was spotless and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere made me feel truly welcomed. I’d be happy to return.
- Michael (10/5): - Very good hotel. Smaller room but perfect for a single traveller
- Thi (10/5): - Great stay at the hedistar! Staff super helpful and the breakfast option was very delicious. Room was spacious (booked a 2 bed room). Towels and garbages cleaned every day but the room itself isn’t turned over every day. Would stay again!
- Sinan (10/5): - Alle top.
- Kuanping (10/5): - The lobby with all the manga to rent is perfect

- Udo (8/5): - Sauberes, ruhiges kleines Zimmer.
- Qing (10/5): - Very nice place with and super affordable
- Elisa (10/5): - Located beside a subway station and various bus routes. As well as a 15 minute walk from a commercial area and the JR station.
- Benjamin (10/5): - The place to be if you like comic books/manga/etc. Room was relatively small, but exactly the size I needed as a solo traveler.
- Vichith (8/5): - A isn't properly positioned. Air is cold while sleeping.
- Shr (10/5): - Nice place close to everything
- Nathan (10/5): - Very clean, helpful staff, the breakfast was lovely and unlimited hot drinks!
- Alen (10/5): - This place rules
- Althea Love (10/5): - Convenient for transport. Convenience store nearby. Clean and great accomodation.helpful staff
- Jesse (4/5): Great for solo travelers learning Japanese - Has a library that boasts an impressive collection of new and old manga. Guests can borrow up to 10 books at a time. Almost all the manga are in Japanese. If you do not know Japanese or not learning Japanese, I feel this is a completely missed opportunity.
Breakfast is a Japanese bento box with miso soup. The breakfast is very healthy containing a hodgepodge of rice and pickled vegetables. The breakfast is low on meat, usually it's a single meatball and a slice of cooked fish.
The hotel room is tiny, so people who are taller than 6 ft or have a lot of luggage might find it difficult to navigate. The beds here are EXTREMELY firm. I like sleeping on firm beds so it was not a problem for me. Also did not like the position of the air condition which blows directly towards the bed. I had to turn if off to avoid freezing while asleep.
To rooftop space is small and not very practical for reading. It gets very sunny up there and there is no shade.
Hotel has definitely seen some better days, noticed the ceiling of my room had cracks and there is a noticeable stink when the staff are cleaning the rooms.
- Vanessa (8/5): - Interesting hotel, small room (not sure 2 people would have fitted comfortably), washing machine handy to use, close to subway
- Petrina (10/5): - Loved this hotel!! Amenities were great and wonderful staff . Close to all the bus routes
- STINA (10/5): - Very friendly staff and a very clean building. Comfortable room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for money - I stayed here a few nights in April 2025. I had a generally positive experience as the room was clean and orderly and everything functioned well. It was definitely value for money. Only caveat was it was particularly hot while I was staying there so had to keep the blinds down in my room during my stay and sometimes the wifi wouldn't work very well. The free breakfast was fine, but might need to let them know you are vegetarian beforehand as I only really had the miso soup at breakfast.
- Brian (8/5): - Clean and quiet, good for a couple night stay.
- Heather (8/5): - The price is reasonable for a really convenient location, near the Nijo castle and train station. Beds extremely hard, but the staff so friendly. Breakfast was traditional and good but the same every day so just be aware.
- Len (10/5): Friendly, helpful staff - Good location. Friendly, helpful staff. Japanese breakfast. Hundreds if not thousands of comics/manga—mostly Japanese but small English selection. Shopping street/shotengai and two conbini practically next door. No hesitation in staying again.
- Eric (8/5): - Got the corner window room which was a very lucky thing for me since it seems to be always sold out. While the room is quite small, as to be expected with a lot of hotels in Japan, it is in a very good location next to Nijo Castle and Sanjo Shotengai. Not sure why this hotel charged me more tourist tax than my other stays in Kansai but it wasn't too much. Was also a great location for local bike rental drop off but be noted that the bicycle parking is in back and has no camera. Would like to return here on future trips to Kyoto. Try Gomaya Crepe-Do at the nearby shotengai for made to order sesame crepes. Very delicious!
- JILIN (10/5): - This hotel is situated next to the famous Nijo Castle, with several bus stops and subway station just a quick stroll away. Additionally, the nearby ramen restaurant offers a deliciously chewy ramen that is definitely worth sampling.
- Aislinn (10/5): Lovely staff, clean and comfy rooms - Lovely clean hotel with very helpful staff who were a wonderful support when helping us ship our bags overnight between Kyoto and Tokyo. Hotel also very close to metro for ease of travel elsewhere in the city and beyond.
- Yazmin (6/5): - For our first time in Kyoto, we decided to stay at the Hedistar Hotel as a cheaper alternative for one of the legs of our Japan trip. Having an evening check-in, our luggage delivered through their transport service was present when we arrived. The hotel’s lobby includes bookshelves of Japanese manga which also included an English section free for guests to borrow during their stay. Although at a good price, the beds were not as comfortable and unfortunately, the rooms were a bit small for two people’s worth of luggage. I also wished there were more pillows, but I’m sure can be requested if necessary. The shower heads also are also angled out of place, so showering was difficult to manage in preventing water from spilling out of the tub. All hygiene amenities were offered for free in the lobby for guests to take for their convenience. Luckily, there was also a FamilyMart right next door where we were able to grab quick snacks to eat. Restaurants were also within walking distance.
When it was time to travel to our next hotel, we experienced difficulty with language barrier when trying to transport our luggage through their service. CASH ONLY for luggage service! Luckily, we were able to find an ATM in the FamilyMart next door. Despite difficulty, they still tried their best to communicate their policies through Google translate which was extremely helpful in figuring out how much to pay.
Overall, it was an okay stay for the price.
Og bestemt super service all around
- Linda (8/5): - Friendly reception and staff. Rooms are small, beds are a bit firm not to my liking. Overall, pleasant good stay.
- Michelle (6/5): - We had to wait a while for someone to be at the check in counter even after pushing the bell. We did arrive an hour before 3 pm and had to leave our luggage’s with them until 3 pm, however we didn’t get our room keys until about 3:15 pm even after already waiting in the lobby. We asked for change of sheets and full service in one of our rooms and they just changed the sheets direction, didn’t change them. The rooms had an off smell.
The location is nice, rooftop is nice. They have comics in the lobby, but over all it was just OK. They provide you one tiny pillow and the mattress was very hard and space was very tight. Not complaining about the space since we have traveled throughout Japan and know this is common.
My suggestion would be to book closer to Kyoto station since that is the hub of where everything is.
- David (10/5): - Excellent place and nice location
- Jason (10/5): - Second time to stay here, great location.
- Duy (10/5): - Love the area and the services provided by the staff!
- Ash Ashraf (10/5): - Lovely hotel with a whole manga library on the lobby that you can borrow and take to your room! Japanese style breakfast which is delicious. Friendly staff and nice clean rooms.
Highly recommend for solo travellers.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I really appreciate the detailed part of how they manage their rooms. From my personal perspective, I think the hallway carpet might have a bit of an unpleasant smell because it’s probably old or hasn’t been cleaned thoroughly. On the other hand, my room is spotless, especially in terms of cleanliness.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location was good and convenient, easy access to eateries, convenient stores and bus-stops. Service staff were helpful too. The only thing i was upset about was the dustiness in the room. I have very sensitive nose. Once i entered the room, i started sneezing and having stuffy nose. Kept feeling there were plenty of fibres and dust floating around. Made my face itchy too.
- Angela (6/5): - Very small rooms but nice hotel
- Jimmy (4/5): - I booked a non-smoking room, but the room smelled like an ashtray. I don't know if it was due to the AC or the guest before me smoked there. Either way, I felt sick waking up in that room. I won't go there again.
- Tyler (8/5): - Mattress in all rooms seem to be very firm. Almost like sleeping on the floor. Staff though were friendly and tried to resolve any issues/questions.
- Huafang (6/5): - More info about Kyoto attractions
- Michiko (6/5): -
- Alexandra (10/5): - Custumer services excellent and clean hotel
- Jacob (10/5): - Great hotel in a very convenient location in Kyoto. Japanese-style breakfast was very nice!
- Jairo (10/5): - Loved the location in Kyoto, super friendly staff and very close to train station walking and many restaurants!
- Sharanika (10/5): - This is a perfect hotel for anyone traveling solo. The staff is kind and courteous and can speak English as well as mandarin/Cantonese. There’s an option to purchase breakfast bento which I highly recommend trying. They were able to accommodate my dietary restrictions as well. Laundry cost roughly 400 yen and no need to buy any detergent. All 3 convenience stores (Lawson, 7/11, and Family Mart) are nearby.
- Clarice (10/5): - It was a cute and quiet hotel in walkable distance to shopping and food
- Ammar (10/5): - Spacious, clean and cozy rooms! Hotel also makes you feel safe, close to Nijo-Jo Castle which is a must-to-visit I think. Also there is a bus stop 1 min walk distance from front door. I recommend here. 10-15 mins bus trip to Kyoto Station.
- David (10/5): - I loved that I was able to get some manga to read during my down time at the hotel. The staff were great and the bento breakfast was delicious
- Sheldon (8/5): - Close to metro, staff were accommodating, I was comfortable and it was everything I needed. Very clean, I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast. The bed mattress is hard but I was still able to sleep. The room is also small.
- David (10/5): - Very friendly staff, walkable to Nijo-jo castle and the imperial Palace. Right next to the city bus stop, and easy to get to from Kyoto station.
We didn't stay long enough to use it, but the lending library of manga seemed a nice option, especially on rainy days.
- Emmanuel (8/5): - This us a great property and the location is excellent with easy access to trains and buses. The only thing i would like point out is that the mattresses are extremely hard. The rest was great.
- Alisha (10/5): - Was a very nice hotel with great staff and amenities. The only downside was it was a bit far from kyotos main attractions and the subway but hotel was amazing.
- Deanna (8/5): Conveniently located Kyoto Hotel - Convenient hotel, not too far from the station and walkable to sites with bus and subway lines close by. Very small rooms, not the most comfortable for long trips with large suitcases.
Staff are very friendly. Breakfast is Japanese breakfast which is great to experience but again, for longes stays, may get redundant.
- Amanda (10/5): - Nice, clean, and modern hotel. They have lots of manga to read in the lobby that you.can sign out and take up to your room to read or even up to the little rooftop terrace they have if you want. Room was small and space efficient which suited me just fine because I wasn't going to Japan to live in a hotel. A complaint I have would be the mattress and pillow were super hard and uncomfortable, but after walking around all day that didn't stop me from passing out. Also that street sounds were pretty loud, but again, I had no problem falling asleep. All in all a decent little hotel and I would still stay again if I was back in the area.
