Guest Reviews
- simon (8/5): - It had everything we needed and was right in the centre , everywhere in walking distance
- Luigi (9/5): -
- VALENTINA (7/5): - Period features Slightly small
- Favini (8/5): -
- Anna (1/5): No safety or security; - Dangerous and unsafe to stay here; strangers accessed my room as entry code is same as room code- this has happened before as per previous complaints in reviews and nothing done about it. No way to lock bedroom door from inside. Then later, rain came through ceiling. Engineer could not fix and more heavy rain forecast so put an extra towel over the bin I'd put there. He did bend a teaspoon to try to use as a door wedge but it was ineffective. So for £168 for one night, I didnt sleep for worrying that more strangers might enter the room. No reply from owner to email requesting refund; will wait till the end of the working week and follow through to small claims court if necessary. Breach of contract. Unable to send videos of leak and photos direct to booking.com via chat. Text of my chat complaint not visible; not sure if booking.com lost it. Other reviews say their complaints were also ignored.
- Scott (9/5): Excellent location and value for money compared to other places in Oxford - Location and appearance
- mary (9/5): -
- Jean (1/5): Ratage total.
- Thompson (10/5): Fantastic - Easy to find close to the night life but far enough away to not be disturbed. Everything you would need was there. Great place to stay would definitely stay again. Absolutely spotless. Nothing.
- James (10/5): - Full of character and ideally positiined on a quiet side street.
- Annette (10/5): -
- Nitin (8/5): wonderful stay -
- Colin (8/5): - Fabulous location right at the heart of Oxford, we could walk everywhere very easily. It might be good to change the code on the front door to be different from the bedroom door
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Fantastic central location
- Jane (8/5): - Beautiful beams, lovely bathroom. excellent location, great to have a kettle n sink. The blind on the window by the sink does not hold up so made that area a bit dark in the day.
- John (7/5): - Great location. This is more of a B&B without the breakfast - no hotel facilities - but that's clear enough when you book. It's clean and attractively arranged/furnished. No lift, if that's what you need. No internet. No phone signal either!
- John (8/5): Apart from minor irritations, my stay was fine - General vibe; nicely refurbished Irritating things: toilet roll holder not secured (tighten that screw!)
Blind broken
Right hand socket on rhs bed broken (couldn’t plug in plug)
Ceiling light in bathroom blown
- Kristin (10/5): Lovely. I enjoyed my stay immensely. - I love this property. This is the third year I've stayed there. The location is perfect: a quiet street but only a minute's walk from the Cornmarket and the Broad. The room itself is generously sized - a bedroom and bath along with a sitting room. There's also a sink and a small refrigerator. It's warm and comfortable. Everything is just what I expected. Since I've stayed here before, I knew what to expect, and the place met my hopes perfectly. I plan to stay here again next year.
- katherine (10/5): Excellent - will be back! - Quirky conversion/ decor - lots of character - central but very quiet location
- Rodriguez (6/5): Convenient Location, heating wasn't working - Great Location, nice character of the building. The room was very cold as the heating system was not working properly. We reported the issue, but nothing was done on the first day. On the second day, we were provided with a portable heater. Additionally, the mattress topper was too big for the bed and uncomfortable.
The should have extra blankets for winter season.
- Claire (9/5): First time visit so a fortunate find for a stay in a comfy, clean room in an excellent location - Excellent location
Lovely ambience
Clean
Comfy
- Se-Heon (10/5): -
- Daniel (6/5): Ok and great location - Great location on quiet street in central Oxford. Property has been nicely renovated. Trash was emptied whilst and bath mat replaced during my stay which was nice. Could do with better cleaning and upkeep. The blind was broken and permanently down. The sprung divan bed base had no mattress just a topper so was very hard (when I enquired I was told the divan base is a mattress which it's obviously not). Beams and bathroom skylight were very dusty. I wasn't happy with the lack of a lock on the inside of the room, especially as the door was just a key code.
- Alana (2/5): No heating in January! - The building and room itself were very quant, with historic features. There was also a nice selection of coffee, tea, etc and the hairdryer was powerful (not always a given!) Upon arrival, we noted that the radiators weren't working. Given the cold January weather, I flagged this with the hotel immediately, while using the small heater that was in the room. While the staff reassured me they would send someone to fix it (no one is there on site to speak to), the issue wasn't resolved for the 3 nights we were there. The heater was not sufficient (at all) for the room size which meant I (and my almost 80 year old mother) had to sleep with our winter jackets, hats and scarves on. I'm from Scotland so I'm used to the cold but the lack of heating made our stay so unpleasant and just miserable. It was not nice coming back to the freezing room after a cold day being out and about (and having to use damp towels in the morning).
As a paying customer, it is the basic facility you would expect from a hotel and is just entirely unacceptable. For these reasons, I would be weary of booking here and would not recommend.
- Ryan (2/5): Not worth the money - Location Blinds did not shut properly so woke up early. But the main problem is the heating we put it on in the afternoon when we arrived at the property by the time we got back in the evening it only reached 17°.
I never got any warmer and when we woke up this morning, it was 14°
as a result, my partner is now ill due to the cold, we have taken photographic evidence of the thermostat
- Andrew (10/5): - Location and style TV not working properly. Small problem
- Emma (10/5): Did the job from start to finish. Would stay again without hesitation - Everything was perfect, we stayed for a Xmas party in central Oxford rather than worrying about
Catching Trains home, we stayed in room 1 which was really nice, clean, the bed was comfortable and not hard as mentioned in a few other reviews, maybe there was a new mattress but we found it fine. The room looked to have been refurbished as the plastered walls had zero marks or look of wear and tear which made the place feel very clean and tidy, stayed on a cold night and we found the heating very adequate, there is central heating which you can control and also a heater in the bedroom cupboard which we didn’t need. Windows open for fresh air, fridge small but can store wine bottles or small food items. Access simple via lock box keys which are actual keys and not PIN number room access so all safe and secure. No staff on site but great communication prior to check in with clear instructions. Excellent for the price and would definitely stay again. Thanks for a good experience. Nothing at all, it was great for the price point
- Parry (1/5): Didn't feel safe, no mattress and terrible customer service - The location was fine and the toiletries were good. The room key code was the same as the door in the hall. Different door and middle door had no handle to be able to close securely from the outside on exit. Our room had a broken door handle and no way of locking it from the inside so we had to barricade our door using a chair as we were concerned over safety. We opted to leave the property after the first night and check into and hotel nearby due to our concerns as two females travelling alone.
When I contacted the owner via booking.com app they ignored me and have continued to ignore me as I have requested a refund and I have had no more information from booking.com customer service.
In the room itself the remote control was completely smashed and broken, so the TV wouldn't work. The PAT testing on the hair dryer was dated 2022 and there was no obvious fire evacuation plan.
The lights in the hall way wouldn't switch off at night so flooded our room with light as was the issue with the window which was not secure, and had a broken blind stuck partly open in the kitchen area.
Our bed was incredibly hard and uncomfortable, and one we checked the mattress we discovered there wasn't a mattress but in fact three thin mattress toppers on a solid bed base.
Considering the cost of this accommodation, it is outrageous that there wasn't even a bed and no way of securing the door from the inside of our room and questionable security from the street which left is feeling worried, uncomfortable and unable to sleep.
- sara (6/5): The location is perfect. The room is lovely just needs some maintenance - A lovely spacious studio style room with small, well stocked kitchen area and a table with two seats. The decor is well thought out. The bathroom is modern - the shower is lovely and warm with good water pressure. Comfy bed. Excellent, central location. There was no heating and a small plug in heater was left in the room which didn't do the job. It was very cold that night The blind in the kitchen area did not drop down fully so the light from outside was shining in all night. There was a lot of light coming under the door as well. There was a light bulb out in the bathroom so it was hard to see and the hairdryer was covered in dust. No back on th eTV remote so the batteries kept falling out.
- samantha (10/5): Excellent - Central. Clean. Nothing. However it wouldn’t be suitable for people with mobility issues. We loved it.
- Francesca (8/5): -
- Ryan (9/5): Great location and very stylish and comfortable space. - Henrys was a great place to stay. Well located with a great restaurant next door. It was close to shopping centres and the theatre. Very comfortable and spacious accommodation. It was well priced in comparison to others around it. Doesn't have parking, but we parked 5 mins away at the shopping centre.
- Alina (10/5): -
- Mei Ling (9/5): Convenient Oxford Stay! - The room was sizable with a separate living and sleeping areas. It was also located very close to the centre of Oxford town. The furnishing was modern and everything functioned well - good heating, large TV, fridge, safe. Amenities were offered in a modernised bathroom - shampoo, soap, shower gel, lotion etc. I could not find the iron although an ironing board was provided. There was nobody on site upon check in and the contact did not respond to my question till late. There is no lift so lugging my 3 suitcases was a nightmare up the stairs.
- Sarah (8/5): The perfect location for visiting our daughter at university. We would definitely stay here again. - The location is excellent. The room is tastefully decorated. A bath mat would be useful as the bathroom floor was very wet after a shower. Also a few more towels as we only had one hand towel. A tea towel would also be good for drying the dishes in the kitchen area.
- Westcott (8/5): Perfect location - Location, location, location! Quirky apartment, which was perfect for a couple of nights. There were no towels in the room. Had to go looking and found a bag under the stairs in the entrance hallway that had clean towels in.
Beware of steep steps up to Room 3
- Val (9/5): Excellent location and a beautiful base to explore. Quiet street. - The quality of fit and the style of the apartment. The hinge on the cupboard under the sink is broken….. the door shuts but this lets the apartment down. You have a wine fridge not a fridge and so no place for ice cubes. Some slight mould around the base of the shower ….just needs a mould spray every couple of weeks. The coffee machine is Lavazza. ( These are not significant but you did ask)
- Elizabeth (9/5): - Great location, excellent communication, clean and has everything u need All was good
- Corinne (7/5): Perfectly pleasant but the same price as a hotel for less service. - A nice room which was plenty big enough for the 2 of us with some nice original features. The location is excellent. There were a couple of quite frustrating things. I rang the number when we arrived to see if we could leave our bags in the room, since it was before check in time, and no no one answered. I then messaged via booking.com and didn't receive a reply until the next day. (Concerningly they seemed to think we weren't arriving til the Saturday when we were clearly booked in for the Friday). We ended up just taking our bags with us but it was certainly frustrating.
There was a little bit of mould in the shower which was unfortunate as the bathroom was otherwise nice.
When you go upstairs at night there are no lights that come on automatically and no light switch I could see so you're trying to enter the code to your room in pitch blackness.
The mattress was not comfortable at all and felt very old.
- Kazuki (1/5): DO NOT BOOK HERE - They double booked my room on the day before the Oxford half marathon. Had to find another hotel with space and ended up having to stay several miles outside of the city centre. Staff on the phone were very unhelpful, and unapologetic. Absolute disgrace of a hotel.
- fadhel (9/5): Excellent location - The location is close to everything you need and far away from the noisy crowd
Room is spacious
The owner paid attention to all the details The sound from neighboring rooms and stairway is very clearly heard .
The stairs are an issue for someone with knee issues.
- Ray (4/5): - The building itself was unique and had lots of character. The room itself was good and had all you would need for a short stay. The location was incredibly convenient for visiting Oxford. However, there were multiple issues. There was mold in the shower and there was dust on the sheets. The shower drain only allowed you to shower for 3-4 minutes at a time because the drain was so slow and the shower basin would fill up. Check in information was given, but there was no checkout information and the company was unresponsive with all attempts to contact- I had to leave the keys in the room because I had no idea what else to do. Outside the location was noisy. Not sure I would recommend to anyone in the future.
- Paul (9/5): Nice central and modern room in a historic building - Great location, nice looking and spacious room with a nice bathroom.
Check-in was complicated by a delayed return of the previous guest but was nicely handled by staff. One of the curtains was broken.
- Stefanie (10/5): Great location - Such a lovely place in a fantastic location. Very comfortable bed and nice to have a coffee machine too.
- James (4/5): - This hotel is really just several rooms for rent without anyone onsite. Rooms do not have air conditioning, and amenities are sparse. The location is close to the heart of town but the alley pretty noisy with crowds at night and delivery trucks morning.
- Martin (8/5): Ideal central city location for theatre and food. - Location was excellent and owner provided good info to access premises Blind and ceiling fan not working. Loads of cobwebs, high up.
- Suzanne (8/5): -
- Matthew (4/5): Disappointing overall, would be so much better if they improved some basics - Good:
Location.
Decor of flat was modern and classic with glass plus exposed bricks with wooden beams. Lots of character. Not good:
Check-in process was awful. I didn’t get sent check-in details due to their IT system failing (codes for outdoor key locks and internal door codes). This is even after calling them to tell this in the morning and afternoon of arrival. By the evening I still didn’t have the codes sent and only got everything I needed after my third call with them.
The sink in the bathroom was unusable because it was blocked.
The WiFi was less than 1MB/sec so was unusable.
The flat had spider webs and dust more than you’d expect.
The bed was pretty uncomfortable.
There were gone off food items left behind in the fridge by the previous guest which weren’t cleared away.
I didn’t think it was clear it isn’t a hotel and therefore doesn’t have a reception, luggage storage, or daily maids to replace sheets / clean the room. I was expecting this.
- Ruth (8/5): -
- Jamie (10/5): - Great location to get around town. Would stay here again. Ceiling fans didn’t work but other than that, it was a very nice stay
- Russell (10/5): - Henry's location off the main traffic streets but easily walkable to all points makes it the perfect location. The building is very secure. Just know our unit was up many steps and no lift, but we would definitely stay here again.
- Tina (10/5): We came to Oxford for our daughter’s graduation, though we have stayed at Henry’s before with a friend whilst visiting m - Excellent location and very clean Nothing. It was perfect
- Roland (4/5): Not sure what to say - Safe didn't work, there was no room turnover, fridge contained an empty beer bottle, and there was a cockroach in the bathroom (never seen a cockroach in the UK before). The room door didn't deadlock, or lock from the inside. Quaint and in a good location though.
- Fionnuala (7/5): Good - The bed was very comfortable and the room was well equipped in general. It was very clean and the shower was very good. The coffee maker didn't work and it leaked water everywhere. The high chairs were very uncomfortable; ordinary chairs would have been much better.
- Kokeb (10/5): Exceptional - Central location
- nancy (4/5): - The location had set a set air conditioner to 20-23 degrees Celsius and it would not go down at all nor cool, we had to sleep with all the windows open because of the heat. The reception is not in the building and nobody could come and help us at all when we discovered none of the ceiling fans worked. When I called the reception the reception person had me check under the bed for a switch that was non existent, then flip all of the switches multiple times to see if any worked for the fan. On top of it he told me nobody could come to fix it since he couldn’t leave the reception desk at his location. It was unbearably hot inside and no a/c and no overhead fans was a terrible combo. I would not go here again personally.
- Anne (8/5): Very good -
- Teresa (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (7/5): Good -
- Audrey (10/5): Exceptional - Location is convenient to get to all the places of interest. Quiet at night. Room is charming. Like the original walls and fireplace. Nothing really
- Nicola (8/5): Great stay - Great location for bars, shopping, theatre, easy self check in/out.
Clean and tidy room with character.
We stayed on a Saturday night so it was a little noisy still when we went to bed but I sleep with ear plugs so didn't bother me.
- Kathryn (9/5): Would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Oxford! - The location of Henry's cannot be beaten. It is on a quiet street but right in the middle of everything in Oxford. I was attending a summit at the university and it was the perfect place for my stay. It was like having a little apartment with everything I needed and extremely well located for a quick walk to everywhere I needed to go. When other people were taking ubers in from their hotel I could just run back to the room for a few minutes during breaks throughout the day. Also, breakfast and brunch at the Handle Bar next door was incredible. Go early before the lines start. I couldn't figure out how to close the little window in the shower which was not an issue for privacy, but the air was a bit bracing first thing in the morning while showering.
- Gaynor (9/5): Perfect location - Brilliant location for sightseeing, shopping vicinity to the train station and extremely clean. Apartment very comfortable, especially the king size bed. Large bathroom with powerful shower. As a solo traveller would've appreciated further door security; a safety chain would be great. A couple of mugs please as tea cups very small.
- James (6/5): see above - Stylish design. Great location. Quiet. Entry details were lost in a very long email. Access codes etc should have been made much clearer prior to arrival rather than getting lost in the less important information in the email. The room was drafty and the left hand blind didn't work. I would also suggest that the area under the stairs should be de-cluttered.
- Andrew (10/5): Great location. Great room with character. - It is a really quaint and unique room. It has beams.which add character. Lovely small kitchen area, clean spacious bathroom and comfy bed.
The location is fantastic - close to shops, restaurants, bars and theatre. Nothing - it was great!!
- Breagha (7/5): A really lovely place to stay in Oxford - The shower floor became soaking wet and it was hard to dry. It me of the blinds was also broken, which was a bit tricky.
- Vidzy (9/5): Superb -
- David (6/5): Great location and OK accommodation. - Henry's location is excellent. And the accommodation is OK. It's a bit tired around the edges (mould in the shower, windows not cleaned for several years, etc.) But OK. We missed the little things, like not being able to store our bags anywhere safe.
- Jess (8/5): Very good -
- Stephanie (9/5): Really lovely place that we would happily return too. - The property was beautiful and amazingly located! Really lovely place that we would definitely return too! Great decor, lovely layout and really nicely thought out. Only minor things like one of the bedside plugs didn’t work and the shower drain needs to be cleared as the tray filled and flooded the floor in the bathroom within the first 5 minutes of your shower. My partner also was kept up until 1:30am with music from the place above the handle bar, but I’m not sure what you’d have been able to do about that.
- Bastien (5/5): Passable - Good location Too noisy, bad isolation. Didn't receive information before check-in to get my room.
- Margaret (8/5): Loved the central location and design, Would have liked coffee pods and herbal teas to be supplied. - The location was perfect, as we were involved in activities at a college five minutes' walk. We loved the bathroom too, and the teeny kitchen, though it did not meet the spec. suggested - e.g. fridge? No, it was a wine cooler! Nespresso coffee maker? No coffee - and it was a Lavazza. The design of the whole interior of this teeny building was cleverly thought through. Also, like others before us, we found the peace and quiet to be amazing for the centre of Oxford - although as St Michael's Street was blocked off due to roadworks, perhaps this was just valid for now. The bed was seriously hard. Actually, I wonder if the mattress had been replaced by a topper - and the fitted sheet was wrapped round the topper and not fitted at all, so the bottom of the bed was exposed. The super shower was spoilt by a kak-handed repair round the base using the wrong materials.
- Anna (10/5): Great stay we will come again! - Really convenient location and comfortable room
- Kristin (10/5): I can't wait to stay again. - I love this property. I stayed here last year too. The room is comfortable and thoughtfully prepared. Everything I needed was there: hairdryer, kettle, dishes, warm towels on a towel warmer, a comfortable bed. The location could not be better, right in the middle of Oxford City Centre. Although there are no staff members at the location, they are quickly available by email or phone and perfectly responsive. I felt safe and comfortable. Everything was wonderful.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - AirBnB like place, but they did not provide the entry codes ahead of time. When I called the front desk (of a different hotel) the gentleman who answered also didn't know the entry code, but he did call back 20 minutes later with the code. Also adjusting thermostat did nothing, it was cold no matter what I set it to.
- Ed (9/5): Superb -
- Sean (9/5): Super base for exploring central Oxford - Great location, very clean and nicely appointed Missing coffee pods
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and accommodation very clean and tidy great facilities would definitely stay again No complaints
- Vanessa (10/5): Exceptional - Location is fab! Lovely comfy quirky rooms.
- Stuart (7/5): beautiful but cold - the location was perfect and the design really lovely. I was delighted by almost everything the thermostat! I could not adjust it, Getting up to a temperature of 16 degrees, when it was very cold outside, was not pleasant. Instructions would have been appreciated!
- Veronica (8/5): - My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights. We got the third level room and it was nice and served its purpose. My only complaint with the room was that the bathroom absolutely reeked of mold. Other than that, the location was great, very walkable, and we enjoyed our stay (other than the terrible mold smell).
- Monica (9/5): Superb - Convenient comfortable and next to a lovely cafe Kitchen tap was very wobbly, but otherwise all perfect
- Anthony (10/5): - This is a really handy room only place slap in middle of Oxford. Very clean, all facilities, excellent condition
- Dave (8/5): Great location for a Comfortable Stay - Location is amazing and self check in straightforward. The apartment was warm and had all that was needed for a two night stay. Generally clean and comfortable. Would stay again. Would benefit from better lighting on the lower stairwell.
The beams and ceiling fans were attractive but very dusty. Whoever switches the fan on first will be showered with dust. Would be worth addressing every couple of months.
Otherwise the apartment was very clean.
- Helen (9/5): Superb -
- Patrice (10/5): Cosy, quaint & charming stay in the heart of Oxford - Location, cleanliness, being left to ourselves, easy check-in and check out, decor, the traditional ceiling beams, kitchenette, powerful spacious shower, nice toiletries, comfy bed and bedding, the heat warmed up the room quickly Telly wasn’t great, would have preferred a smart tv to access Netflix 😇
- Stefka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (7/5): Perfect location - Property is right in the centre of Oxford, the perfect location. Short walk to most attractions and train station.
Property was clean and tidy apart from few cobwebs in the ceiling. On initial looks room was fantastic, but on closer inspection some things are getting a bit tired. Mattress needs replacing. It had a quite hard topper over a mattress which was hanging off the sides
Coffee machine on counter top but no pods to use with it. Only one milk pot for tea.
Second night the people upstairs were walking about at 5 in morning and could here every footstep and doors closing so didn't sleep well.
- Nigel (9/5): Great 3 day visit to Oxford . Would recommend the park and ride - Location to town centre ,walking distance to transport N/a
- Zsé (6/5): Pleasant - Gorgeous building, super location and the room was really cool. The kitchenette was well equipped and stocked! Cleaning wasn't to a high standard.
- Niki (8/5): Good location and enjoyed our stay - Great location and comfy bed. Very east check in. Great shower. Close to everything in the city centre.
Sink, fridge and kettle No check out instructions, cafe next door has a live band until 11 on a Friday night and they obviously set up right next to the wall so loud. Cups but no saucers (either have cup and saucer or mugs!)
Coffee machine without any coffee pods
- Kimberly (7/5): Great lovation! Close to the train station and Oxford city center. Needs to address a few housekeeping - Great location. Bed wasn’t very comfortable. Needed dusting and the blinds were not operational.
- Kalia (8/5): Very good -
- Caroline (8/5): Very good - Fab location. The design is really nice and it was comfortable and warm. Comfy bed and pillows. Ample space for two people. Very clean. Great shower.
The guys in the bike shop downstairs are really cool and friendly. Please provide a tea-towel or kitchen paper. Seems pointless to have a sink and washing up liquid with no means of drying. There were no pods for the coffee maker. Pods are bad for the environment anyway, so a cafetière and small amount of ground coffee would be better. :)
- Jeanne (4/5): Would not stay again. - My expectations were low largely because of the low cost. We chose the place based primarily on proximity to the New Theatre, and indeed it was very close. The fire alarm went off shortly after 11 the first night. Neighboring business staff commented that it happened “all the time.” Took the staff at Henry’s quite a while to shut it off. We spotted cockroaches in the kitchen. Bathroom lights didn’t work. Ceiling fan didn’t work. No apparent way to control temperature except for opening windows and putting on a floor fan in the kitchen/diner. Whenever upstairs tenants were in, we heard every sound they made. Furnishings weren’t clean and felt shabby. Overall ambience was slightly better than most backpacker hostels.
- Tarly (7/5): Great location, clean, generally quiet. - The location and the space were good. The location next to a bike shop also had a bar that played host to live bands on Friday and Saturday nights that reverberated the accommodation until 10:30pm. Also, there was no hand soap in the shower room
- Catherine (10/5): Excellent location, lovely comfy bed and gorgeous room. -
- Gary (8/5): Very good -
