Room was small, but was perfect for what we needed. Very clean, all the required facilities, and the staff were amazing. Breakfast was also delicious.

• Philip (6/5): - This was basic but did the job. I found the lack of attention toward customer experience disappointing. There was no ambience/ background music at breakfast making it all quite awkward and very quiet. No effort was made to mop up the table and floor from the leaking conservatory roof at breakfast, making one of the tables and chairs for breakfast unusable, which I found surprising. The service was slow (magnified by the poor ambience) and when it did arrive my beans arrived cold and needed returning for heating. My shower temperature could not be regulated, but was constantly very hot as opposed to cold and so could be used dipping in and out. Cleanliness was poor, however I was expecting something more rough and ready from the pictures and so wasn’t surprised. A fantastic location and good pub evening environment and atmosphere.

The staff were very friendly and I had a lovely pint in the bar. Coniston is well worth a visit and The Sun is definitely worth staying at.

• Lesley (10/5): Great staff, food and views - Lovely little hotel that serves great food and has the friendliest staff you will ever meet. Had a good sized, comfortable room with a lovely view. We’re very dog friendly, even cooking an extra breakfast sausage for her! Would highly recommend, we had a wonderful stay.

• Gwen (10/5): - Fabulous, cosy Hotel. Clean, comfortable and dog friendly. The staff here are so friendly, helpful and genuinely can't do enough for you. Had the best nights sleep-the bed was so very comfortable. The breakfast and the food in the bar is delicious, plentyful, well presented and a great choice of menu. Our only criticism is there are no outdoor bins to dispose of used doggy bags. We will definately be going back though.

• Dave (2/5): Worse hotel ever - Absolutely disgusting, the most dirty hotel I've ever stayed in, bedding was stained on arrival, kettle was black inside, smell was horrendous(food), the noise from the plumbing was like being on a shooting range, honestly the worst experience ever ruined our weekend as we went the next morning as couldn't face another night.

• Karl (8/5): Very Friendly Staff & Good Food. - Very welcoming staff, friendly, polite, helpful, couldn’t be nicer & the food was great! Bar, was well stocked, comfortable with the outside areas looking very welcoming, great for a summer stay. The room was nicely decorated, but a small double means a small double, the bed felt tiny. If you are booking in get a larger room.
• Hugh (10/5): - Stayed at the Sun solo for a couple of nights. Great location in terms of access to the mountains and close to shops/pubs. Very welcoming staff, clean and comfortable bedroom with great views. Breakfast was strong - plenty of options, full english was delicious. Pub within the hotel was great - roaring open fire to heat up after being out on the mountains, loads of local ales. Would definitely stay again, and would def recommend. Thanks for having me! • David (8/5): Very dog friendly hotel - We took our 13 year old dog with us and were unsure how he would cope with the stairs as we were on the second floor. As it turned out he was fine and I have to say, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, it was a pleasure to stay at the Sun and would definitely go back in the future. Everything was clean and tidy with a good level of accessories in the room.

• Janette (10/5): - This is the second occasion we have stayed at The Sun, we love it! It is aging and a little rough around the edges, but it’s character runs deep, it’s atmosphere is just lovely and homely. If you like your hotels with character and charm, this is the place for you, if you are after standard, or uniform, or sterile, this is not your place. Really convenient and delicious breakfast, will be staying again for sure!
• Abi (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay here and the staff were so friendly! I would definitely come back and recommend to friends. The rooms and hallways could do with being painted and I would have liked for the bedroom doors to have something in addition to the latch lock, perhaps a door chain.
• Jay (6/5): Great view but a bit of a climb - It was a comfortable place. On arrival it took a while to check in due staff busy serving pub customers. Our room (6) was right at top and it takes a bit to negotiate the stairs with luggage and poor knees!! But as the one and only staff pointed out that the view is excellent. Couldn’t fault the breakfast or the service. Hotel is not too keen you eating your own food outside in the garden!! Be warned!! Shower good but the toilet filling tank was faulty and I was woken up by the noise of continuous water flaw, I did find temporary solution and hotel said they know about it and are dealing with it. It is steep walk up from the little shopping ares so be aware!!

• Dean (6/5): The Sun Inn - We stayed he a couple of years ago and it was a totally different experience, this time although the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very disappointing! The shower was very difficult to use and the toilet wouldn’t always flush properly but the most disappointing thing was the actual cleanliness of the room, it obviously hadn’t been cleaned properly for some time, cobwebs everywhere and the blinds were thick with dust!
• Mark (8/5): - Basic but characterful hotel, room very warm in winter with good views. A little old-fashioned but in many respects charmingly so. Excellent breakfast in the more modern conservatory extension. A lot of steps although that was a trade-off with the views from the room. Good at the price since much in Coniston is quite expensive. Shame the restaurant wasn't operational in the evening on this visit, but as the staff pointed out, it's only a short walk to Coniston's centre where there is plenty of choice. Reasonable amount of parking on site.

• Phil (10/5): - We were lucky to get a booking here at late notice. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, and really knowledgeable about the area for local walks, dining etc. There is a quiet little pub attached to the hotel serving great beers. Breakfast was excellent, currently they are not serving other meals due to staff shortages but there are plenty of other places to eat in a short walking distance. There may be other places which are more ‘fancy’ - and more expensive - but for us it was perfect. So many small businesses like these have struggled post-COVID, the Sun Hotel has done a great job and we would recommend it to anyone.

• Tim (2/5): Disaster and security issue - Where do we start? We checked in and then left about 4pm to go and surprise our friends camping by the lake. The keys are large and bulky so left them with reception. We came back at 10.45 but all was in darkness ( it's a pub as well) . We pushed the front door and it opened and went inside the pub but part of it was sectioned off via a couple doors that were all locjed. That was great as our keys were on the other side of the locked doors! We pressed the button in reception but no one came we then called the telephone number on the website and we could hear it ringing but no reply. So there we are in a hotel with nobody available and we had no keys to our room. This was now around 11.15pm we realised we could access the lounge area so we left down on the two settees and tried to get to sleep. That's how we spent the night in a hotel charging £100 for the privilege. The owner turned up at around 7.30am and we immediately asked for our room key and explained the situation. He asked how we got into the pub without the front door key - we explained the front door was open. This is dangerous as anyone could have got in and broken into any of the bedrooms and some where occupied, it also meant anything could have been stolen. The manager then suggested we should have gone to his house which was around 40m away- how did we know where he lived we had only been there for one night. No apology and certainly no goodwill. It's the first time we have slept on a sofa 50ft from our room!
• Andrew (10/5): Lovely stay, would come again. - Staff are fun, friendly and helpful. We were made to feel very welcome. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great. Location also great. Some corners and sofas in the public areas could do with a bit of a tidy, but it didn't effect our stay. Would happily stay again anytime.
• Tracey (6/5): Nice place to stay - Had a great stay, staff were very pleasant unfortunately the kitchen was closed and we weren’t notified before our stay so we were extremely disappointed with that but they still managed to sort the breakfast which was fantastic!! Just be careful when booking through hotels.com as they do not tell you anywhere on the site the size of the rooms! We unfortunately ended up in a small double which once our case was in didn’t really leave a lot of room for us and our dog! I would definitely stay again but maybe next time use a different booking site! And call first to make sure the kitchens were open!

• Susan (2/5): Not an ideal stay for a few days away - We arrived to find the restaurant is no longer open. Having come back from eating elsewhere there was inappropriate behaviour from people who had been drinking in the bar. The bar was then closed at 9.45pm. We decided to move out and stay elsewhere .
• Kerry (6/5): - We booked this hotel at short notice for one night and chose it over a pub due to having a 5 year old son. The property needs a lot of attention, the room had cracks in the ceiling and wallpaper was falling off, the windows all looked very rotten too. Such a shame as this hotel could be lovely. The kitchen was closed at 5.30pm on a Tuesday evening when we arrived too. There was also no information in the room for us like breakfast times etc. The one really positive element of this hotel is the staff. They made us feel welcome and looked after us at breakfast really well.

• Rita (10/5): Brilliant stay - Very happy with my stay at the sun , the staff were short like everywhere else but that didn’t stop them making you feel welcome, very clean rooms and hotel very clean in general, food was good and the bar had local proper beer , we found that drink was cheaper in the hotel than the pubs locally,, I will definitely be staying there again

The hotel bedroom needs total refurbishment and updating. The photographs on line are not true to reality . The staff were really friendly and the food the good.
• Sarah (8/5): Lovely hotel, friendly staff - We chose this hotel as it was close to where we were walking that day on the Coniston fells. Ideally located, free parking, good food. Was short on staff, following reopening after lockdown so service probably slower than usual due to that. The staff who we dealt with were very friendly. Room was clean. We did have a problem with the bathroom, the hot water pipe was noisy, made a high pitch sound on and off through the night. They need to sort that out in room 6. Otherwise all good.
