Guest Reviews
- Karien (10/5): Brilliant stay as always ! Great location, beautiful rooms and lovely food with Super Staff ! - Step Town is my home away from home. All the staff are super friendly, efficient and helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. John, the manager, is the best and Emmanuel and Jean Paul are brilliant. You cannot go wrong staying there. I love Step Town, the property. The road to get there needs some work and has seriously been neglected. This is NOT under Step Town's control and they cannot be held responsible for the state of the road !
- KENNEDY (9/5): Excellent ! - The location , very accessible from the city centre . The very warm and welcoming staff especially Emmanuel . The quietness of the facility and the views from the balcony ! Also , the manager Mr John was awesome ! And the food , wow ! Lack of blended orange juice .
- Antonina (10/5): - Amazing staff, wonderful breakfast including omelettes and fresh fruit. This place is an oasis in the city!
- Stefan (7/5): -
- Christian (10/5): -
- James (9/5): - The greatest thing was the super friendly staff, who were super helpful in finding onward transport and giving advice about Kigali. The room was spacious and it was one of the most comfortable beds I’ve tried throughout my travels in east Africa. Overall highly recommended!
- Toyeen (10/5): -
- Benjamin (10/5): Tres bon séjour je reviendrais - Bien placé
Personnel agréable
- Augustine (7/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): A place I return to -
- Stefan (8/5): - The room and the view from thr balcony
- Bernadette (10/5): - Breakfast was great. Friendly, helpful staff and clean room. Nothing, everything was good.
- Jiri (10/5): -
- Pavel ČESAL (8/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): Great stay upon arrival at Kigali Airport - My friend and I stayed here upon arrival at Kigali airport.
We had a comfortable night’s stay, enjoying some food and beer from the onsite restaurant.
The outstanding factor was the assistance with transport from the airport and then to the very busy bus station in the morning. As 2 women travellers this could have been daunting, however Patrick made sure we got our tickets and the right bus and even connected us with a friend to help us upon arrival at Musanze.
Service we much appreciated on the first day of our travels. Nothing, it was very good value
- dromos (10/5): - Accueil chaleureux, calme, propreté Rien
- Helen (9/5): Friendly staff, comfortable room and great restaurant! - It was a spacious triple room and the staff were absolutely beautiful. The food was yummy and varied. The views were great and overall, I would highly recommend Step Town. It's difficult to say what is the central/main part of Kigali. This hotel is slightly outside of the touristy part, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, even though staff may say to call them always for taxis etc, once you are in town just use the taxis (there were 3 of us and so we didn't use the moto bikes) that you find as they can be a bit cheaper. Most taxis, though, will ask for US$10 to go places.
- Marie Jose (10/5): Excellent - Bien situé, très propre. Terrace avec vue sur la ville.
Personnel serviable et accueillant.. Rien
- casey (8/5): - Was close to town Tv had only 1 channel.
- Swarts (8/5): Good Price Quality. - The place is well located on a hill with a nice view. Negative is that it's, though short, on a dirt road.
The staff were all friendly and welcoming. The room is large, large bathroom as well as a large balcony to watch the sunset.
- Perry (10/5): I will always use this hotel. It's quaint, very clean, comfortable and located near everything. - The breakfast's were fine and the staff was excellent.
They went out of their way to accommodate you in any way they could. I will definitely return to this hotel and recommend it to friends. There was nothing not to like.
- Chris (7/5): - The room was extremely small - too small for two people really.
- Sam (10/5): Great stay - The staff was wonderfull! We stayed here with a big group of friends and they always tried to cater quickly to our needs. Furthermore, the rooms were spacious and clean.
- KAKESA (7/5): Agréable - Situé à proximité du centre-ville. Réceptionniste très amicale. Pas de circulation intense à proximité.
- Piotr (10/5): Hotel z regionalnym klimatem - Hotel z regionalnym klimatem. Położenie na zboczu. Sympatyczny personel. Pokój z wejściem z zewnątrz. Widok na panoramę miasta. Przed oknem zabytkowe drzewa. Dobrze skalkulowana cena. Przykładowe śniadanie: Bukiet warzyw, omlet z tostami i dzbanek afrykańskiej białej herbaty.
- Henrik (9/5): -
- Ahman (9/5): I’d still give it an overall 10/10 putting everything together. - Breakfast was good; they can have a little more on the menu though. Location was great as view was nice and it gave easy access to key areas of the city The kitchen working till late hours, let’s say 12 midnight instead of 10pm as it is.
- cisse (7/5): -
- Romy (8/5): - zeer helpvol personeel
- lee (10/5): The only place to stay in kigali - This is the place to stay in Kigali, the staff, rooms, and food are all amazing.
- Yvan (8/5): - Step Town Hotel is an excellent place to stay — clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home. Highly recommended for a pleasant stay. The only downsides for me were the location and the breakfast, which could be improved. Overall, still a pleasant experience.
- Scott (9/5): Easy stay - Great basic hotel. Comfortable room with a good shower, and a good breakfast and dinner with a great view. Would stay again. Staff was very accommodating in extending our stay at the last minute. Nothing
- Steven (9/5): Very friendly little hotel, good value, with excellent city views - Step Town is a great little hotel. Not ultra-modern, nor in a high-profile location, but it's very central for getting to all areas and sights of Kigali. The panoramic views across the city hills from its breakfast area and first-floor open balcony space are magnificent. I could have happily sat there for hours. My room was small and basic, but everything worked as it should (good wifi) and it was very quiet at night. Staff at the hotel were friendly and attentive throughout my six nights here. Overall, a happy good-value stay, and it's undoubtedly the first place I'll check if I have the pleasure of visiting Kigali in future. For the price paid, there's nothing more I could have reasonable wished for.
- Michelle (9/5): - People working there were very friendly. Breakfast was great and a lot. The rooms were also clean and spacious. The driver told us many interesting facts about the country and Kigali. The beds a bit hard and uneven. There were a few short water outages (~5min), but apart from that we had an absolutely great stay.
- Richard (8/5): Home from Home - The staff were great. Very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. They made us feel very welcome.
All the prices were excellent for the room, food and drink.
The room was large.
The food was great.
Nice views and convenient walking distance to the CBD and Genocide Memorial.
Plenty of communal space. A bit of maintenance is needed on a few facilities, in particular the shower head brackets and the sliding doors.
- Karina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katharine (10/5): A great base for exploring Kigali with wonderful staff - We stayed in a triple room which was huge and very clean with a great shower. The beds (two singles and a large double) all had mosquito nets, although we didn’t see a single mosquito while we were there! Big selection of tasty meals and drinks available from the restaurant and a nice view day and night, you can sit inside or outside and they were very understanding of food allergies. We felt completely safe at all times, including walking from the hotel to the centre and to the genocide memorial. Best of all were the staff, who were very friendly and helpful, including arranging transfers for us to and from the bus station (also providing assistance with purchasing bus tickets to Musanze), storing our luggage and teaching us some words in the local language. We would definitely stay here again. Taxi drivers may not know it, but in our case they just called reception and got directions (or you could have a screenshot of the location on your phone just in case).
- Kolawole (8/5): I would do it again happily - staff was friendly and helpful - loved their food and hospitality. great people especially Emmanuel no pool
- Vignesh (5/5): Passable -
- Awb (8/5): Very good -
- Usman (10/5): Exceptional - The staff excellent service and honesty I like the way they welcome me, i like their service and honesty, definitely I will definitely go there again, the rooms are clean, the food is very good, the laundry services excellent.
- Kofi (9/5): Great place with friendly staff who served with smiles. Cleaning was done twice & religiously. - Breakfast was always a delight. Served a good variety. Came in shortest time from ordering. Gave a variety local and worldwide in one serving - local fruits and porridges as well as worldwide eggs and meats. The photo of the jacuzzi in the suite, was not functional in reality.
- Thomas (9/5): Superb -
- Becher (9/5): Superb -
- Jérôme (7/5): Good -
- Wendy (7/5): OK, not great - The room was clean and comfortable, although the bathroom needed a repairman. We enjoyed the local TV channels. The food was great--we tried everything from pizza to shakes, and we loved it all. The hotel had great books to borrow from the front desk or the 2nd-floor lounge! The 2nd floor balcony has a great view. The staff was the best; they were friendly, funny, responsive, and helpful. Terrible maintenance in the bathroom! The shower door was off its track and didn't open/close properly; the shower drain was clogged and overflowed after about 30 seconds of use; the shower also leaked around the edge onto the bathroom floor; the sink faucet was loose and rattled; even the garbage can lid had broken hinges! To be fair to staff, we didn't stay long enough to report it, but these are obvious problems that maintenance/cleaning should have noticed when they cleaned between guests (or did they not clean at all?).
The hotel is close to the central business district, but because of how the roads are laid out, it's a bit of a walk to downtown.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shari (9/5): A solid choice! - We only stayed for one night, but owner went above and beyond to make sure we knew what was needed to get over the border to Tanzania safely. Rooms were comfortable and quiet. Located near the bus station. Nothing. It was a good value spot and we would stay here again
- Carolyn (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent value for money. Staff were attentive without being over-bearing. Food was fabulous. Really enjoyed our time there and could easily have stayed longer if we didn't have other places to be.
- Katherine (8/5): Good value and location in Kigali - Room was comfortable with mosquito net and hot water. Hotel is well located about 30mins walk from the genocide museum and with a great view. Breakfast included fruits, toast and choice of omelette. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Hotel also contains restaurant and conference accommodation. I would stay again. Rooms are a little simple and outdated, but clean and comfortable. There are not many restaurants close to the hotel but you ca eat at their restaurant.
- Eva (8/5): A wonderful place to stay in Kigali! - I absolutely love this hotel. The people are amazing and as friendly as can be. The hotel was also so clean - very impressive! My only issue is that a few things need updating. Otherwise, a wonderful place! A few things need to be updated.
- Charles (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (7/5): An enjoyable environment with very pleasant staff. - All food was. Good. Generous helpings Probably the serving time and lack of anticipation of customers reqests.
- Ajay (7/5): Good - lovely staff and very clean premises. room was practical. great service. noisy at night sometimes with the bar across the road or guests drinking at the restaurant. complementary drinking water every day would have been nice for the price.
- Adeolu (8/5): Very good - The staff were very friendly and willing to go the extra mile to help. During my stay, they found me a guide with a car to take me around at very reasonable price compared to what the tourism company were charging. Nothing
- Tomas.martinkovic (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jorge (10/5): Fabulous!!! - I recently had the pleasure of staying at Step Town Hotel, and it exceeded my expectations. The warm and welcoming staff, coupled with the very clean rooms and breathtaking views, made my stay truly memorable.
Very important for me, in this price category, that it is clean, the shower works well (hot and cold), a nice bed, availability of good food and bevareges aswell as being located very central.
Here I found it all. On top I was treated like a family member. Just great!
I can't wait to return and experience your hospitality again.
- Erik (10/5): Exceptional - location staff and services
- Kate (9/5): Great affordable stay in Kigali - Very kind and helpful staff, lovely balconies with views across Kigali, good breakfast and comfy bed -quiet too. I enjoyed my stay. Kind staff waited up for me to check out at 12.30am and made me coffee to take in my thermos, and ensured I got in my cab to the bus station. It could do with some maintainence - new signage, new menus (these are dog eared and dirty) and a face lift for the reception area because it presents as quite run down and tatty - but this could be easily fixed quite inexpensively and greatly improve the atmosphere.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
(1/5): Bad - The hotel's view is beautiful The crew is bad, exploitative, just looking for money
- Ajay (10/5): Comfortable and cozy hotel with friendly staff - Staff are amazing! Food is great - clean and comfortable hotel - with great city views Could be priced lower given its a bit old (but well maintained)
- Ajay (10/5): Comfortable and cozy with great food and friendly staff - Comfortable & friendly staff Property is a Bit old
- Peterh (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice staff The dirt road into the hotel is in pretty poor condition, but that's not the hotel fault
- Obura (9/5): Satisfied - There should be variety to choose from. Include African/local food The eggs
- Hagos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tochukwu (7/5): A very lovely place to stay with really nice staff. - Amazing Environment and location.
Great, tasty and affordable meals.
Very neat rooms and environment. They don't have comfortable or luxury facilities in the rooms.
Just basic and classic.
However, everything is very neat and clean.
- Jonathan (9/5): Profited from the lovely terrace for a productive stay at a reasonable price - The hotel has a wonderful terrace that looks out over a valley: I typically worked there, and ate breakfast and (often) supper there too. The staff were very welcoming, and most accommodating (e.g. on the last day I checked out, and left my bags at the hotel; they offered to let me shower when I came to pick up the bags). The location suited my purposes. The chef makes very nice salads. Breakfast - I chose coffee, omelet, toast, and fruit - set me up for the working day. Although central, the hotel is on a dirt road that is poorly lit at night (but safe nonetheless). On foot, it is a 15-20 minute climb up to the center of Kigali. The room and bathroom were functional, but not particularly modern.
- Michael (10/5): Really kind people who went above and beyond to help us! - The service here was really wonderful! Even shortly after booking our stay many months in advance, John Yves offered to help me and my friend with a logistical challenge we were trying to solve for a portion of our trip. The extra effort he put into that request was super appreciated! When we arrived in Kigali, our driver (I believe his name was Frank?) was very patient as we experienced a slight delay during security processes on the way out. He also took the time to point out some of the points of interest during our drive to the hotel. Everyone was very accommodating during our stay. The front desk team volunteered to store our bags for us while we left for a day trip in-between nights at this hotel, and they also helped me to secure Rwandan franc currency denominations for a collection. Thank you so much for all your kindness and service! Can't think of anything!
- Lauren (6/5): Basic room but great location for genocide museum and not far from airport. Food is good. - Location was perfect for walking to the Genocide Museum. Motos to the airport took around 20mins and cost 2000RWF per bike. Staff were friendly and helpful, wifi strong. Views from restaurant over Kigali were nice. Food was very good and available until 10pm. Shower was broken but we washed under the tap which had hot water. Room was quite dark.
- David (9/5): Great! - Wonderful staff, good breakfast and beautiful view
- Eugen (8/5): It is okay - The room was nice and comfortable, very friendly staff, there is a laundry service, nice breakfast. The street to the hotel is a disaster, we didnt have electricity in the room for a long time while rest of the hotel had.
- Johan (8/5): Very good - Very friendly staff. Excellent breakfast and dinner. Infrastructure (electricity and water)
- Johan (8/5): Very good - Very friendly staff Infrastructure like water and electricity needs attention, to say the least.
- Iris (9/5): Wonderful staff; comfortable rooms; delicious food - I had a very comfortable 2-night stay at Step Town. The hotel is not far from Kigali city center, & the area where the hotel is located is quiet, safe, & has nice views over Kigali. The staff was warm and very welcoming. The room I stayed in was clean & comfortable, and the place had a relaxing vibe. This was perfect as I was very tired & sore coming from my strenuous gorilla trek in Uganda just the day before, then crossed the border from Uganda to Rwanda the next day. This hotel was exactly what I needed for my much-needed rest. The onsite restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, & dinner. The breakfast that was included with my room was plenty & delicious, with eggs, toast, fresh fruits, fresh coffee, & juice. They have a good menu selection so I ended up having lunch & dinner here on my first day. The food & service were excellent. Wifi on the property, including the room, was also excellent. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Kigali for a couple of nights or more.
- Pooja (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Great value and location. - The price, staff and location were fantastic. The rooms were a little on the small side
- Andrew (10/5): Really the best place. - A great place to stay.

- Nebeyou (9/5): Superb - It is a clean and quiet place. The food is great. None
- Natalia (10/5): I stayed a day in Kigali and this was a very nice place of the city. - It is a cute place with a nice city view. The staff are so very nice! The breakfast was very good. I love the Spanish omelette and African coffee! The room didn’t have AC.
- Chelsea (9/5): Step town took care of us and our large group very well! - Uniquely full list of amenities! Mosquito nets, screens on windows, fans, fridges, restaurant on site, and an amazing manager and staff who helped us with our large group in every way! It was just too warm in the rooms at night, even with the fan
- Sina-kim (8/5): Shoutout to the friendly staff at Step Town; good location, clean and comfy - Clean and comfortable motel in central location near the city centre. Outstandingly friendly and helpful staff!
- Aaronwrubin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Esayas (7/5): Enjoyed my stay there. Special thanks to John and Emanuel. - Good location and very friendly staff. Fair price as well. Very small room.
- Steve (8/5): Restful. Pleasant. - Very nice staff. Good cook/chef on site. Meals tasty and reasonable by US standards. Staff helpful in visiting Genocide Museum and other spots of interest. Hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk to most things- a bit isolated. However, the friendly staff and good kitchen is noteworthy. Also, motorcycle taxis are inexpensive by US comparison.
- Bernardkruger (10/5): Exceeded al expectations in spite of a challenging location. - While the hotel is admittedly located in a less desirable part of Kigali (unpaved, dusty streets; long uphill walk to downtown), the proprietors clearly went out of their way to make up for these evironmental challenges by providing an exceptional hotel in a building of graceful, classic design, with good security, and at very affordable rates. The staff was helpful and caring. The room was comfortable, with a nice clean bathroom and plentiful hot water, The restaurant offered good meals which could be enjoyed either indoors or on the large exterior balcony with sweeping views of the valleys below. All things onsidered, I had a very enjoyable stay. I spent two nights and found nothing whatsoever to complain about.
- Abdifatah (8/5): Very good -
